A volume in International Research on School LeadershipSeries Editors Alan R. Shoho and Bruce G. Barnett, University of Texas at San AntonioOur fifth book in the International Research on School Leadership series focuses on the use of data in schoolsand districts as useful information for leadership and decision making. Schools are awash in data andinformation, from test scores, to grades, to discipline reports, and attendance as just a short list of studentinformation sources, while additional streams of data feed into schools and districts from teachers andparents as well as local, regional and national policy levels. To deal with the data, schools have implementeda variety of data practices, from data rooms, to data days, data walks, and data protocols. However, despite the flood of data, successful school leadersare leveraging an analysis of their school's data as a means to bring about continuous improvement in an effort to improve instruction for all students.Nevertheless, some drown, some swim, while others find success. Our goal in this book volume is to bring together a set of chapters by authors whoexamine successful data use as it relates to leadership and school improvement. In particular, the chapters in this volume consider important issues inthis domain, including:• How educational leaders use data to inform their practice.• What types of data and data analysis are most useful to successful school leaders.• To what extent are data driven and data informed p...

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2014 in the subject Nautical Science, , course: -, language: English, abstract: Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a data exchange system which was introduced to improve shipping safety and the possibility of exchanging data, at a country and international level, about ships heading to or from ports, as well as exchanging data relating to passengers and dangerous or environment-polluting cargo carried by ships. The main purpose of introducing AIS was to offer a wider spectrum of available, continuous and reliable navigational data. Apart from being useful for traffic control in a marine area, AIS data can be a very important source of information used in collision avoidance process. However, some reservations are voiced with regard to the unconditional reliance on the data transferred through this channel. The information integrity problem had been raised already at the stage of system implementation and some fragmentary outcomes were published in the past. However, it can be assumed that the results from the system introduction period may not represent reality. Thus, it seems reasonable to base the assessment on theoretical analysis, through the development of multi-criteria model describing the AIS information integrity. The research was performed on data recorded in the period between 04.04.2006 r. and 08.01.2012 r. (selected 55 weeks- 385 days) in the laboratory of Institute of Navigation and Hydrography. There has been an extensive demand in the use of databases for decision support in these days. This was mainly due to the fact that information, one of the most precious assets of an organization, can assist in decision making and this way considerably improves the value of an organization. This phenomenon is a result of the increased availability of new technologies to support capable storage and retrieval of large volumes of data, namely data warehousing. One of the most important requirements of a data warehouse server is the query performance. The principal aspect from the user perspective is how quickly the server processes a given query: “the data warehouse must be fast”. The main focus of our research is finding adequate solutions to improve query response time of typical data ware house queries and improve scalability using an environment that takes advantage of characteristics specific to the data ware house context. Our propose model provides very good performance and scalability even on huge data warehouses.

On the other hand, despite their success in the marketplace, ERP systems are exposed to a range of risks which endanger the quality of the data they process. In this research, the author assesses ERP design and implementation principles in light of data quality concerns, presents evidence from the field of daily ERP practice, and provides guidelines on how organizations can best handle data quality by integrating data quality considerations into existing ERP system implementation and business management models. The usage of general purpose data quality "add-ons" such as address edit controls is discussed in the context of ERP systems, and the role of dedicated master data management extensions - handling data exchange between business partners - is reviewed.Successful data quality management in an ERP context requires awareness, robust process design, and preventive measures. As the author shows, proven concepts described in the data management and (data) quality literature can be - and need to be - applied to the context of ERP systems, in order to fully exploit their potential.

Guides readers through the quantitative data analysis process including contextualizing data within a research situation, connecting data to the appropriate statistical tests, and drawing valid conclusions Introduction to Quantitative Data Analysis in the Behavioral and Social Sciences presents a clear and accessible introduction to the basics of quantitative data analysis and focuses on how to use statistical tests as a key tool for analyzing research data. The book presents the entire data analysis process as a cyclical, multiphase process and addresses the processes of exploratory analysis, decision-making for performing parametric or nonparametric analysis, and practical significance determination. In addition, the author details how data analysis is used to reveal the underlying patterns and relationships between the variables and connects those trends to the data’s contextual situation. Filling the gap in quantitative data analysis literature, this book teaches the methods and thought processes behind data analysis, rather than how to perform the study itself or how to perform individual statistical tests. With a clear and conversational style, readers are provided with a better understanding of the overall structure and methodology behind performing a data analysis as well as the needed techniques to make informed, meaningful decisions during data analysis. The book features numerous data analysis examples in order to emphasize the decision and thought processes that are best followed, and self-contained sections throughout separate the statistical data analysis from the detailed discussion of the concepts allowing readers to reference a specific section of the book for immediate solutions to problems and/or applications. Introduction to Quantitative Data Analysis in the Behavioral and Social Sciences also features coverage of the following: • The overall methodology and research mind-set for how to approach quantitative data analysis and how to use statistics tests as part of research data analysis • A comprehensive understanding of the data, its connection to a research situation, and the most appropriate statistical tests for the data • Numerous data analysis problems and worked-out examples to illustrate the decision and thought processes that reveal underlying patterns and trends • Detailed examples of the main concepts to aid readers in gaining the needed skills to perform a full analysis of research problems • A conversational tone to effectively introduce readers to the basics of how to perform data analysis as well as make meaningful decisions during data analysis Introduction to Quantitative Data Analysis in the Behavioral and Social Sciences is an ideal textbook for upper-undergraduate and graduate-level research method courses in the behavioral and social sciences, statistics, and engineering. This book is also an appropriate reference for practitioners who require a review of quantitative research methods. Michael J. Albers, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of English at East Carolina University. His research interests include information design with a focus on answering real-world questions, the presentation of complex information, and human–information interaction. Provides an important framework for data analysts in assessing the quality of data and its potential to provide meaningful insights through analysis Analytics and statistical analysis have become pervasive topics, mainly due to the growing availability of data and analytic tools. Technology, however, fails to deliver insights with added value if the quality of the information it generates is not assured. Information Quality (InfoQ) is a tool developed by the authors to assess the potential of a dataset to achieve a goal of interest, using data analysis. Whether the information quality of a dataset is sufficient is of practical importance at many stages of the data analytics journey, from the pre-data collection stage to the post-data collection and post-analysis stages. It is also critical to various stakeholders: data collection agencies, analysts, data scientists, and management. This book: Explains how to integrate the notions of goal, data, analysis and utility that are the main building blocks of data analysis within any domain. Presents a framework for integrating domain knowledge with data analysis. Provides a combination of both methodological and practical aspects of data analysis. Discusses issues surrounding the implementation and integration of InfoQ in both academic programmes and business / industrial projects. Showcases numerous case studies in a variety of application areas such as education, healthcare, official statistics, risk management and marketing surveys. Presents a review of software tools from the InfoQ perspective along with example datasets on an accompanying website. This book will be beneficial for researchers in academia and in industry, analysts, consultants, and agencies that collect and analyse data as well as undergraduate and postgraduate courses involving data analysis.

There are multiple possibilities of using data mining techniques, even in technical and scientific areas of applications. In regard of manyfold fields of application, there are no less than the number of techniques and methods for Data Mining in existence. Another field to apply Data Mining technique is the domain of simulation. Simulation is the computer-based approach of executing and experimenting of and with models. One aim of this thesis is to analyze data mining tools to see how capable they are solving data mining duties with respect to data calculated by simulation. Different data mining tools are analyzed, commercial tools like SPSS and SPSS Clementine as well as established and freely available tools like WEKA and the R-Project. These tools are analyzed in matters of their data mining functionalities, options to access different data sources, and their complexity of different data mining algorithms. Beyond the analysis of data mining tools with respect to functionality and simulation, envi-ronments for modeling a...
