One of the working area of real-time scheduling is distributed scheduling. Task scheduling in distributed systems is dealt with two levels: on the level of each processor (local scheduling), and on the level of the allocation of tasks to processors (global scheduling).In this thesis, a distributed real-time system with fault tolerance has been designed and called Fault Tolerance Distributed Real Time System FTDRTS. The system consists of heterogeneous processors act as servers and clients connected together via LAN communication network. This system has two types of scheduling schemes: (1) global model scheduling, (2) independent model scheduling for scheduling tasks in real time distributed manner. The time utility function TUF has been developed and called the DTUF (Developed TUF) function. This function gives another dimension and used to priorities' tasks, based on whether they are Urgent or Important, or both, or neither.A fault tolerance protocol called DRT-FTIP (Distributed Real Time - Fault Tolerance Integrity Protocol) has been developed. A Simultaneous Task Allocation and Motion Coordination approach is developed to solve the problem in a concurrent manner. Furthermore, a novel algorithm: Simultaneous Path and Motion Planning is proposed for collision free motion coordination based on Dijkstra and A * algorithms. The appropriateness of heuristic and evolutionary algorithms to solve the problem is investigated. A distributed computational architecture is also developed to improve the efficiency of implementation of the approach. The proposed approach is tested with static and dynamic environments, and validated by using data from an automated container terminal with fleet of autonomous straddle carriers.

With the growth in multimedia technology, demand for high speed real time image compression system has also increased. JPEG 2000 still image compression standard is developed to cater such application requirements. It offers numerous advantages over traditional JPEG standard. The key algorithms adopted in this standard are discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT). Both the algorithms are computation intensive and when implemented on general purpose processor, they are unsuitable for real time applications. Therefore, to meet the timing constraints imposed by the real time systems dedicated VLSI implementation of these algorithms is imperative. EBCOT is a two-tier coder. Tier-1 is a context based adaptive arithmetic coder and Tier-2 performs layered bit stream formation. Tier-1 is further partitioned into block coder and MQ coder. To a novice, it is difficult to grasp the operating principle of the block coder and hence it is difficult to realize high speed JPEG 2000 architecture. The author has made an attempt to demystify these concepts and presented a simplified VLSI architecture of the block coder in this book.

A fantastic collection of Soviet Asian architecture, many photographed here for the first time Soviet Asia explores the Soviet modernist architecture of Central Asia. Italian photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego crossed the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR. The resulting images showcase the majestic, largely unknown, modernist buildings of the region. Museums, housing complexes, universities, circuses, ritual palaces - all were constructed using a composite aesthetic. Influenced by Persian and Islamic architecture, pattern and mosaic motifs articulated a connection with Central Asia. Grey concrete slabs were juxtaposed with colourful tiling and rectilinear shapes broken by ornate curved forms: the brutal designs normally associated with Soviet-era architecture were reconstructed with Eastern characteristics. Many of the buildings shown in Soviet Asia are recorded here for the first time, making this book an important document, as despite the recent revival of interest in Brutalist and Modernist architecture, a number of them remain under threat of demolition. The publication includes two contextual essays, one by Alessandro De Magistris (architect and History of Architecture professor, University of Milan, contributor to the book Vertical Moscow) and the other by Marco Buttino (Modern and Urban History professor, University of Turin, specializing in the history of social change in the USSR).
