Scientific Study from the year 2008 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: B, , 69 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Health, environment and poverty are closely interrelated and inseparable, particularly in developing countries. WHO estimates that environmental factors are the root cause of 25% of the total burden of disease worldwide and account for about 35% in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Effective environmental management is the key to avoiding a quarter of all preventable illnesses which are directly caused by environmental factors. In the Bibiani-Bekwai and Sefwi Wiawso Districts of the Western Region of Ghana, the environment has been altered by complex human induced factors, which have negatively impacted on the health of the population. This paper seeks to establish the major causes of environmental and human health degradation and whether there is a direct link between environmental degradation and human health in Bibiani-Bekwai and the Sefwi Wiawso Districts in the Western Region of Ghana. Four complementary approaches were used during the investigation: extensive literature review, consultations with key informants, the administration of questionnaires, and stakeholder consultations. The data was analyzed using SPSS to establish the linkages between environmental deterioration and human health in the two districts. The results clearly suggest that environmental degradation seriously affects human health in the two districts. 80% of the ...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Accounting and Taxes, grade: 1st, Nottingham Trent University, course: Accounting and Finance, language: English, abstract: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is probably one of the most current and evolving issues within the business world today. There is extensive research in to the financial impacts that CSR has upon a business, yet the outcome remains inconclusive due to contradicting findings. This Independent Learning Project presents many of these contentious financial impacts through a literature review. The primary research then focuses on attempts to contribute to current research by questioning employees at a company with a high level of environmental CSR, to discover if it is a determining factor in terms of their recruitment. An online questionnaire has been used to gain information from 66 respondents regarding their opinions and experiences upon environmental aspects when seeking a new job. The research concludes that employees deem environmental aspects of a business to be relevant when applying for a role, yet the majority do not actively seek to find information regarding it, thus overstating its importance through their opinions. Furthermore, the research indicates that utilitarian aspects are rated of higher importance. This may be a result of difficult financial times.

Christina Scharpenberg Okobilanzielle Bewertung von Produkten eines verpackungsfreien Supermarktes

Environmental activists often claim that people produce too much waste. The over-use of plastics is particularly criticized. One major argument in favor of reduction is the enormous quantity of plastic waste that ends up in the world's oceans, including small particles that endanger marine life. Here, product packaging is one of the worst offenders. With their packaging-free supermarket model "Original Unverpackt" (OU), Milena Glimbovski and Sara Wolf show how to reduce packaging waste in the food industry. It is widely believed that less waste will reduce environmental impacts and, indeed, if the amount of packaging material is the only difference within the supply chain, then this thesis is true. In reality, however, implementing packaging-free supermarkets leads to further changes in the supply chain. In this study, we analyze the supply chains of six representative OU products to determine the environmental impacts of their components. Using a cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment (LCA), we compare the OU products to their conventionally packaged counterparts and show that the whole supply chain plays an important role. Although five of the six OU products did indeed perform well, there is still much room for further optimization of OUs packaging strategy. In particular, customer behavior, such as returning (or not returning) glass containers and cleaning (or not cleaning) refillable boxes, significantly impacts the LCA. The choice of packaging material and me...

Biomass is a renewable resource, whose utilization has received great attention due to environmental considerations and the increasing demands of energy worldwide. Since the energy crises of the 1970s, many countries have become interested in biomass as a fuel source to expand the development of domestic and renewable energy sources, reduce the environmental impacts of energy production provide rural prosperity for its poor farmers and bolster a flat agricultural sector. Biomass energy (bioenergy) can be an important alternative in the future and a more sustainable energy. In fact, for large portions of the rural populations of developing countries, and for the poorest sections of urban populations, biomass is often the only available and affordable source of energy for satisfying basic needs as cooking and heating. The focus of this book is to present a historical overview, country perspectives, the use of biomass to produce biofuels, the current and upcoming sources of biofuels, technologies and processes for biofuel production, the various types of biofuels and, specifically, the ways and means to make biofuel production sustainable, economically feasible, minimize environmental damage and to deliver on its many promises. The Energy and Environment book series from Scrivener Publishing and series editor, James G. Speight, aims to cover the environmental impacts and social concerns of energy production in its various forms. This first volume in the Energy and the Environment series offers a comprehensive coverage of one of the fastest-growing and most important sources of energy, biofuels. Future volumes will cover oil and gas, wind and solar energy, and their environmental aspects.

Uemura Tetsuji Population decline, Infrastructure and Sustainability

This book presents a new comprehensive study on the impacts of population decline on infrastructure in Japan, taking into account all types of infrastructure and using a quantitative approach. Data collection methods include interviews and two large scale questionnaire surveys, the first conducted with municipalities and the second, a stated preference survey, conducted with members of the public. The goal of sustainable development is relevant even in a depopulated society, and hence a sustainable development framework is applied to the analysis where social, economic, environmental and engineering impacts are investigated. The main findings indicate that some infrastructure impacts observed and reported in depopulated areas do not seem to be related to any population decline; moreover, the preferences of citizens for infrastructure development is very similar between depopulated areas and non-depopulated areas. This book also provides many cases to cope with the impacts of population decline on infrastructure in Japan. Some of policy implications in each four-aspect of sustainable infrastructure development and management could be extracted from those cases.

Although Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) represents only a small number of investors, nevertheless it is on the rise, which means that the environmental performance of oil and gas companies has certain implications for those companies' funding. The aim of this paper is to explore environmental performance in the oil and gas industry and the relationships between environmental performance and SRI in the company BP. A mixed research design is employed in this study in which two types of qualitative exploratory analysis are used: an illustrative case study with BP and semi-structured interviews conducted with 14 individuals including environmental managers, investor relations managers and investment managers. In addition, the researcher will use a qualitative comparison analysis in looking at publications produced by BP on the topic of environmental performance. In this study, the researcher found there to be minimal correlation between environmental performance and ist effects on investors' SRI decisions. This paper has implications for further enhancing the definition of environmental performance and increasing company value for SRI investors, although it is limited by the size of the sample and other uncontrollable variables. This paper increases the understanding of current definitions of environmental performance in the oil and gas industry and enhances values for SRI investors when investing in oil and gas companies. Although substantial critique has been expressed over the last decades, environmental valuation and costbenefit analysis are considered sensible tools in the context of decision making over project funding. This is especially the case because of tremendous development of these techniques over the last decades. This study shows that the World Bank, as one of the leading institutions in the world, treats this topic from two different perspectives. First, there is the theoretical side. Here the World Bank sets out ideal procedures, under their rules and guidelines, and publishes papers and reports with respect to further development of underly...

The Green Multiplier: A Study of Environmental Protection and the Supply Chain

Supply chain management, a generally overlooked area of management, is steadily evolving into a corporate function of ever-growing economic importance. Yet is this increasing importance reflected in environmental protection? This book offers a novel theoretical model on how supply chain management could become an environmental change agent and assesses the empirical evidence for supply chain involvement in corporate greening. Ranging from the personal level through the organizational to the level of the political economy, suggestions are made how the supply chain function can make fuller use of the environmental potential.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: Merit, University of Birmingham, course: International Development, language: English, abstract: Climate change is a global concern with its impending threats to economies, human development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Climate change impacts are currently being observed and studies show that poor countries are the most vulnerable. Using Bangladesh as a case study, this research examines the impacts of climate change to poor, rural communities and further explores the measures that are carried out to combat its existing and future threats. This research also aims to look into the existing socio-economic vulnerabilities of Bangladesh in order to establish the linkage between climate change and development. Findings of this study show that poor communities are impacted by climate change through the loss of lives, assets and livelihoods. Adaptation to climate change is therefore necessary and should be integrated in development planning and objectives, to ensure that the most vulnerable groups are represented. Overall this research has observed that Bangladesh is still lacking this capacity, despite the spontaneous adaptation being practised by local communities. This study has further observed that the most common response in addressing climate change impacts to vulnerable communities in Bangladesh is community-based adaptation, whi...

This study examined community characteristics to provide insight why people commit themselves to community organisations focusing on environmental protection. Employees and volunteers of natural conservation organisations in Germany completed a survey containing instruments measuring organisational Sense of Community (COSOC), Pychological Empowerment (PE) and Community Participation (CP). Results indicated that COSOC predicted participatory behaviour of the organisation members, mediated by PE and that these community strengths are interrelated. The examination of potential effects of demographics found age, education, type of employment and working hours per week influencing COSOC. Regression analysis indicated gender, size of the place of residence and working hours per week effecting CP. Methodological limitations and further implications are discussed.

Handbook of Environmental Economics: Volume 3: Economywide and International Environmental Issues

Many of the frontiers of environmental economics research are at the interface of large-scale and long-term environmental change with national and global economic systems. This is also where some of the most of challenging environmental policy issues occur. Volume 3 of the Handbook of Environmental Economics provides a synthesis of the latest theory on economywide and international environmental issues and a critical review of models for analyzing those issues. It begins with chapters on the fundamental relationships that connect environmental resources to economic growth and long-run social welfare. The following chapters consider how environmental policy differs in a general-equiIibrium setting from a partial-equilibrium setting and in a distorted economy from a perfect economy. The volume closes with chapters on environmental issues that cross or transcend national borders, such as trade and the environment, biodiversity conservation, acid rain, ozone depletion, and global climate change. The volume provides a useful reference for not only natural resource and environmental economists but also international economists, development economists, and macroeconomists. Buildings might cause environmental impacts through their life cycles. It is considered that tall buildings have much more environmental impacts than to low-rise buildings. In order to decrease these impacts carrier system design and sustainable design concepts come into prominence for tall buildings. Carrier system materials and carrier system types as part of carrier system design, and ecological, economical and social-cultural sustainable design criteria as part of sustainable design should be handled as a whole for the design of tall buildings. In this book, the application of sustainable design criteria on 10 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certificated tall buildings was examined. Afterwards, the application success of ecological, economical and social-cultural sustainable design criteria for the examined tall buildings was evaluated in the context of the suggested evaluation method. The evaluation and the relations built in this book should be adopted as sustainable design approach by all actors that take role in building sector.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2000 in the subject Mathematics - Applied Mathematics, grade: 1,0 (A), University of Osnabrück (Institute for Environmental System Research), 110 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Almost all human lives and all locations on earth are affected by the presence of chemical substances. However, besides its benefits, a substance usually also has a negative effect on the environment and human health. If a substance escapes into the environment, it must not exceed the concentration that leads to adverse effects. A concentration at a target is called exposure (TRAPP AND MATTHIES 1998). Hence, the environmental hazard can be the product of (environmental) exposure and (eco-)toxicological response. If the probability for the occurrence of damage is included, the term risk is used (risk: damage multiplied by the probability of occurrence). It is a common procedure to use the quotient of the Predicted Environmental Concentration (PEC) and the Predicted No-Effect Concentration (PNEC) as a measure for the risk of a substance. Basic principles on the risk assessment of substances are given by LEEUWEN AND VAN HERMENS (1995). Obviously, there are two different aspects defining risk: the toxicological properties of a substance and the predicted environmental concentrations. This work focuses on the latter aspect. Numerous works have already dealt with the methods to estimate environmental concentrations of substances. In 1979...

White Gwendolen White Sustainability Reporting

Environmental and sustainability reporting involves nonfinancial and financial indicators of an organization's impact on environmental, economic, and social dimensions of their operations. As stakeholders (e.g., investors, consumers, governments, donors, employees) of organizations demand more transparency from profit and not-for-profit entities, environmental and sustainability reporting is a means to address this demand. Public interest in the environmental and social impacts of corporations began in the 1960s and 1970s. Protests against the Vietnam War, concern for the environment, and opposition to South African apartheid were some reasons that investors reacted to more than companies' reported profits. A number of investors actively avoided manufacturers of weapons and "sin" products (tobacco, alcohol, and gambling). This book is intended for MBA students, executives, and managers who can discover the internal and external benefits of environmental and sustainability reporting, the basics of reporting, and the reaction of the investment community. The reader will benefit from this introduction to environmental and sustainability reporting to better assess its value for his or her own organization.

Mark Matsa Pollutants Spread Around Gweru Dump Site

When waste is deposited at dumpsites it is usually forgotten yet it continues to interact with environmental factors to become even more dangerous to both people and the environment through soil, water and air pollution. This may cause ecological damage resulting in the ecosystem failing to sustain both animal and plant life. People may also contract diseases from polluted environmental media through contaminated food, air or water. In this study the aim was to evaluate the role of environmental factors in the distribution of pollutants around Gweru dumpsite. The study compared the concentration levels of lead (Pb), cadmium (cd) and sulphides (SO2) around the dumpsite with the natural concentration levels of the same chemicals in the surrounding areas. It also determined whether there is a significant (p>0.05) relationship between the concentration levels of pb, cd and sulphides and environmental factors specifically slope, soil bulk density, flow direction, soil infiltration rate and distance around the dumpsite. Results of the study established that there is a significant (p>0.05) difference between the concentration levels of each of the chemicals within and around the dumpsite.

Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich VWL - Umweltökonomie, Universität Duisburg-Essen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: To communicate their efforts in increasing the eco-efficiency of flying, airlines have started publishing more and more environmental reports in the recent past. Although there is now more transparency within the market than decades before the remaining question of this development is: What goals do the companies want to fulfil with their publications and how credible is environmental reporting in a sector that has often been heavily criticized for the effects of its business on the environment? The aim of the study to which this abstract refers to was to develop a model which allows evaluating environmental reports of airlines and come to a conclusion about their credibility. By using a benchmarking approach including a quantitative and qualitative analysis it was possible to get an overview how airlines deal with the problem of credibility in practice. To come to a conclusion in this point, in a first step a total of 24 environmental reports of globally operating airlines were assessed with the help of a credit point system. By measuring the quality of the reports with five main criteria (general company information/vision strategy and management/ecological aspects/credibility/formality) a first ranking could be build which showed that there are big differences in the existing reports concerning quality, transparency and credibility. Ajide Kazeem Energy consumption, environmental contaminants, and economic growth: The G8 experience

Environmental pollution has increasingly become an issue of global concern because of climate change and consciousness for environmental sustainability. To this end, this paper investigates the relationship between energy consumption, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and economic growth of the G8 countries over the period of 56 years spanning 1960 through 2015 using both the Fully Modified and Dynamic OLS estimation techniques. The empirical investigation establishes the critical roles played by energy consumption and CO2 emissions on economic growth but in substantially opposite directions. While that of the former positively enhances economic growth, on the one hand, the latter negatively deters it. In addition, a long-run relationship is equally established but with the varied direction of causality. Finally, the study offers significant policy implications directed at using energy resource efficiently as well as curtailing environmental contaminants.

Hydrogeology: Principles and Practice provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of hydrogeology to enable the reader to appreciate the significance of groundwater in meeting current and future water resource challenges. This new edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect advances in the field since 2004. The book presents a systematic approach to understanding groundwater. Earlier chapters explain the fundamental physical and chemical principles of hydrogeology, and later chapters feature groundwater investigation techniques in the context of catchment processes, as well as chapters on groundwater quality and contaminant hydrogeology. Unique features of the book are chapters on the applications of environmental isotopes and noble gases in the interpretation of aquifer evolution, and on regional characteristics such as topography, compaction and variable fluid density in the explanation of geological processes affecting past, present and future groundwater flow regimes. The last chapter discusses groundwater resources and environmental management, and examines the role of groundwater in integrated river basin management, including an assessment of possible adaptation responses to the impacts of climate change. Throughout the text, boxes and a set of colour plates drawn from the authors’ teaching and research experience are used to explain special topics and to illustrate international case studies ranging from transboundary aquifers and submarine groundwater discharge to the over-pressuring of groundwater in sedimentary basins. The appendices provide conversion tables and useful reference material, and include review questions and exercises, with answers, to help develop the reader’s knowledge and problem-solving skills in hydrogeology. This accessible textbook is essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students primarily in earth sciences, environmental sciences and physical geography with an interest in hydrogeology or groundwater science. The book will also find use among practitioners in hydrogeology, soil science, civil engineering and planning who are involved in environmental and resource protection issues requiring an understanding of groundwater. Suinyuy Derrick Ngoran Socio-Environmental Impacts of Sprawl on the Coastline of Douala. Options for Integrated Coastal Management

This book addresses the socioeconomic and environmental implications of urban sprawl on the coastline of Douala-Cameroon by making use of qualitative and quantitative research methodology. The findings of the work portray that sprawl in Cameroon is orchestrated by inadequate policy implementation, archaic master plan, inadequate information dissemination to the public, inequality in the distribution of resources among the different regions of the State and above all, the gaps elucidated by the traditional form of management. The work upholds that livelihood strategies and environmental protection are intricately linked, and therefore, there is a need for ICM as the management approach blends the two adequately. Based on the experience drawn from Xiamen ICM, the study concludes that Douala needs an autonomous coastal interagency to address the gaps punctuated by sectoral management, and thus, enhance the sustainable management of its coastal milieu.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Psychology - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Lund University (Department of Psychology), language: English, abstract: Climate change has become one of the greatest concerns of the 21st century as its ramifications pose a major risk to all life on earth. However, not all individuals are aware of this risk and behavioral engagement to counteract the issue is often still lacking. This research examined the relationship between climate change risk perception and pro-environmental behavior. The aim of this cross-sectional study was twofold. First, studying specific pro-environmental behavior and second, using a methodological approach that addresses the measurement inconsistencies in the literature on how to define and operationalize climate change risk perception. The sample consisted of 141 young educated adults (M = 25.67, SD = 2.93) who responded to an online questionnaire. Results showed that climate change risk perception significantly predicted pro-environmental behavior. Comparing personal worry and general concern as two distinct indicators of climate change risk perception indicated that personal worry was stronger correlated to pro-environmental behavior. This book describes different theoretical models developed to identify the near and mid infrared (IR) spectra of diatomic molecules isolated in the gas phase or subjected to environmental constraints, useful for the study of environmental sciences, planetology and astrophysics. The applications presented show how molecular interactions modify the near and mid IR spectra of isolated diatomics under the effect of pressure, a nano-cage (substitution site, Clathrate, Fullerene, Zeolite) or surfaces, to identify the characteristics of the perturbing environment.

A wide-ranging, interdisciplinary exploration of key topics that interrelate pest management, public health and the environment This book takes a unique, multidimensional approach to addressing the complex issues surrounding pest management activities and their impacts on the environment and human health, and environmental effects on plant protection practices. It features contributions by a distinguished group of authors from ten countries, representing an array of disciplines. They include plant protection scientists and officers, economists, agronomists, ecologists, environmental and public health scientists and government policymakers. Over the course of eighteen chapters, those experts share their insights into and analyses of an array of issues of vital concern to everyone with a professional interest in this important subject. The adverse effects of pest control have become a subject of great concern worldwide, and researchers and enlightened policymakers have at last begun to appreciate the impact of environmental factors on our ability to manage pest populations. Moreover, while issues such as pesticide toxicity have dominated the global conversation about pest management, economic and societal considerations have been largely neglected. Environmental Pest Management: Challenges for Agronomists, Ecologists, Economists and Policymakers is the first work to provide in-depth coverage of all of these pressing issues between the covers of one book. Offers a unique multi-dimensional perspective on the complex issues surrounding pest management activities and their effect on the environment and human health Addresses growing concerns about specific pest management strategies, including the use of transgenic crops and biological controls Analyses the influence of global processes, such as climate change, biological invasions and shifts in consumer demand, and ecosystem services and disservices on pest suppression efforts Explores public health concerns regarding biodiversity, pesticide use and food safety Identifies key economic drivers of pest suppression research, strategies and technologies Proposes new regulatory approaches to create sustainable and viable crop protection systems in the framework of agro-environmental schemes Offering a timely and comprehensively-unique treatment of pest management and its environmental impacts in a single, inter-disciplinary volume, this book is a valuable resource for scientists in an array of disciplines, as well as government officials and policymakers.
