Robert S. Rait With the Eagle Takers. the Peninsular War Experiences of Hugh Gough with the 87th (The Prince of Wales.s Own Irish) Regiment of Foot

An outstanding soldier and his regiment in the Peninsular WarThose who know anything of Hugh Gough will probably know of him as the general who defeated the Sikhs of the Punjab and finally secured the Indian sub-continent for the British Empire. In common with many senior officers of the Victorian age, Gough learned his craft as a young soldier in the British Army at war with the Napoleon's French forces in Spain. There he proved himself to be an outstanding and highly regarded regimental officer. His regiment, the 87th, was comprised of hard fighting Irishmen and eventually became The Royal Irish Fusiliers. For those interested in the Peninsular War this book will be especially noteworthy because much of its content concerns the comparatively little reported campaign in Andalusia. Not only did Gough and the 87th fight at Barrosa, but there they took the Imperial Eagle of the French 8th Ligne regiment-the first Imperial Eagle to be taken in battle in Spain by the British Army. This volume, extracted from a biography of Gough's entire career, also provides vital insights into the siege of Tarifa. Notably, it was also the 87th who captured Marshal Jourdan's baton at Vitoria-yet another singular distinction of the Peninsular War. This Leonaur original includes extensive use of Gough's own words, written while campaigning in Spain, together with maps and illustrations not present in the original. Gough's personal experiences are complemented here by a short hi...

George Crowe, Fred T. Jane H. M. S Terrible and Her Naval Brigades. A Cruiser . Her Campaigns During the Boer War and Boxer Rebellion-The Commission of H. M. S. Terrible 1898-

The Naval Brigade of the cruiser H. M. S. Terrible in the Victorian ageThe battles of the Nile and Trafalgar in the opening years of the 19th century demonstrated that the Royal Navy was an unbeatable international force. The lessons of that period were so well understood by the world that the British navy did not fight another major battle on the high seas until Jutland during the First World War. Britain ruled the waves for a century as the nation's imperial and colonial aspirations were fulfilled and the Royal Navy became a de facto international police force. The larger wars of the century were fought on land and demanded little of British naval resources. Naval guns and their expert gunners, however, were a valuable asset that could be deployed to significant effect almost anywhere the British Army was engaged. Naval Brigades were created and went on to see action in the Crimea, the Indian Mutiny, the Zulu War, the Boer War and towards the close of the 19th century as part of the force dispatched to China to suppress the Boxer uprising and relieve the beleaguered legations in Peking. This unique Leonaur two-in-one volume contains exciting narratives of the brigade of H. M. S. Terrible, a cruiser of the 'Powerful' class, during the Second Boer War, where it played a significant role in the relief of Ladysmith, and in China during the Boxer Rebellion. Also included is an interesting description of the initiatives which led to the building of the 'Powerful&#...

John Dos Passos Three Soldiers

Wikepedia: Three Soldiers is a 1921 novel by the American writer and critic John Dos Passos. It is one of the key American war novels of the First World War, and remains a classic of the realist war novel genre. The disillusionment John Dos Passos felt for the Great War forms the core of THREE SOLDIERS, which stands as a denunciation of the military and its exploitation of young men. The novel chronicles the wartime experiences of a trio of American privates from different backgrounds: Andrews, a gifted musician and Harvard graduate from New York; Fuselli, a store clerk who hopes to impress a girl back home in San Francisco; and Chrisfield, an easygoing farm boy from Indiana. Recognized as a masterpiece when first published more than seventy-five years ago, THREE SOLDIERS still stands as a testament to the dehumanizing effects of war.

C. A. Rose, Hugh Dalton With the Guns. Two First Hand Accounts of British Gunners at War in Europe During World War 1- Three Years in France with the Guns an

Two books in one volume-two first hand accounts by British subalterns in contrasting theatres of the Great WarThe first of the books in this double volume tells of the activities of a battery of the Royal Field Artillery-one of the many horse drawn units of guns and gunners who fought an arduous, heroic, dangerous and often tragic war on the Western Front during World War 1, often trading shell for shell with the German Artillery. The words of the author, a young artillery officer, draw the reader into the heart of the intimate group that constituted the gun battery. The story of him, his brother officers and their men embraces the battles of Loos, the Ypres Salient, Messines, Third Ypres, Cambrai, Arras and finally the breakthrough of the allied armies at the Hindenburg Line which heralded the end of the war in 1918.In the second book we learn about the largely unreported contribution the British made towards the Italian war effort. As a member of one of ten batteries of artillery sent to Italy in 1917, the author served in the campaign in the Alps including the actions at Isonzo, Piave and the retreat from Caporetto. Present on the Italian front until the rout of the Austrians in the Veneto and final victory, he provides rare information about the British at war on this 'sideshow' front, valuable details about guns and battery life and an insight into the personalities and activities of his Italian alliesWith the Guns brings the campaigns of the field gunners back t...

D. W. Carter Unholy Rebellion. The Civil War Diary of Charles Adam Wetherbee

"I left three years ago to do my part in putting down this unholy rebellion." By 1861, Charles Adam Wetherbee had officially traded his comfortable life as a college student for one that included drafty Sibley tents, long marches in weather and wilderness of all kinds, and bloodshed. A Union infantryman with the Thirty-Fourth Illinois Volunteer Regiment, he survived the battles of Shiloh, Stones River, Liberty Gap, Atlanta, and others. One hundred years later, long after Wetherbee had died, a tattered and faded diary was found at a home in Lawrence, Kansas. The homeowner opened its pages and was astonished to discover that Wetherbee had penned every detail of his daily life during the Civil War. Wetherbee's diary presents a realistic view of what a soldier's life entailed, as the reader is thrust into the firsthand drama of the Civil War as it was endured by enlisted participants. Get a true sense of what the Civil War was like from someone who was there to witness an Unholy Rebellion.

Recovered from his wounds, the Deaf Man is bent on revenge and determined to rub the collective face of the 87th in the dust of his brilliance in McBain's latest zany romp. After striking first at the woman who betrayed him, the Deaf Man turns to taunting the 87th with cryptic hand-delivered messages (quotes from Shakespeare or anagrams) that are interpreted or misinterpreted with hilarious results. The saga of Fat Ollie's book, which began in Fat Ollie's Book (2003) and continued in The Frumious Bandersnatch (2004), resumes and promises to have a long life of its own. There are a lot of soap opera flourishes to the personal relationships of the 87th crew, and McBain milks them for humor and pathos. Steve Carella faces paying for the double wedding of his mother and his sister. Bert Kling knows his beautiful surgeon girlfriend is cheating on him. Cotton Hawes and his glamorous TV news girlfriend, Honey Blair, are under attack, but which one is the real target? It's vintage McBain, complete with pitch-perfect dialogue, subplots that thrust various precinct cops into the spotlight, a pace that encourages the reader to forget about dinner or a good night's rest, and a plot that teases and tantalizes from start to finish.

Two accounts of American Gunners at WarNot only was the United States committed to a policy of neutrality as the Great War broke out in Europe in 1914 it was also, in any event, completely unprepared to be a participant in a global conflict. By 1917 its army consisted of only 300,000 men, it had experienced operational difficulties in its recent expedition into Mexico and had not fully grasped that its rate of growth as a nation would inevitably include it in all events on the world stage whether it wished to be included or not. The allies looked to the prodigious manufacturing capacity of the United States and its resources in manpower to break the stalemate of the war on the Western Front and so in April of 1917 it reluctantly 'threw its hat into the ring.' Those who are interested in Americans at war, the United States effort in World War 1, the history of the US Artillery arm and the first hand experiences of the US soldiers who fought in Europe in the early years of the twentieth century will find much to interest them in the pages of this book. However, while all that may be sufficient for many The 305th Field Artillery in the Great War offers more. It serves very well in its capacity as a unit history, but the author, Charles Wadsworth Camp, takes us into the heart of the unit relating anecdotes and personal accounts with humour, insightful detail and a remarkable skill in penmanship; indeed he was a noted correspondent, critic and writer in civilian life. Bert Anson The Miami Indians

One of the small group of tribes comprising the Illinois division of the Algonquian linguistic family, the Miamis emerged as a pivotal tribe only during the French and British imperial wars, the Miami Confederacy wars of the eighteenth century, and the treaty-making period of the nineteenth century. The Miamis reached their peak of political importance in the Indian confederacies which blocked the Northwest Territory in the 1790's and during the War of 1812. Their title to much of the present state of Indiana enabled them to make advantageous treaties and delay emigration until the late 1840's. The tribe's 1846-47 emigrations produced two branches, the Indiana group and the Kansas-Oklahoma group, which have maintained political co-operation in spite of deep-seated cultural antipathies and dispossession. Their solidarity has been rewarded by success in their suits before the United States Court of Claims. This account spans the years from 1658 to the present, emphasizing the occasions on which the Miamis were a decisive influence on the course of American history.Bert Anson, author of many articles published in historical magazines, teaches history in Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. H. P. Holt The Mounted Police of Natal. The Zulu War, the Boer War, the Zulu Rebellion and Policing the Colonial Frontier in South Africa 1873-1906

Fighting and policing on the veldt and in the bushIn parts of the globe during the nineteenth century, particularly those quarters incrementally being coloured red by the growth of the British Empire, many new police forces were formed and their services were as varied as their locations and the native peoples who populated them dictated. Sometimes that meant the activities of the force were virtually military for long periods of time and they were always certainly far removed from the duties of a 'Bobby' of the home country in every way. Never was this more true than for the subject of this book, 'The Mounted Police of Natal.' Formed in 1874 in South Africa it came into being at a time of violence and unrest with which it was involved until the eve of the Great War. Wars and uprisings among the Kaffir tribes of the Cape were raging long before the creation of the NMP, but, naturally, they immediately became embroiled. Everyone who knows of the period is aware of how in 1879 war against the Zulu nation broke out and shook the security of the colony to the core. Brave men of the NMP fought against and died under the assegais of the Zulu impis at Isandlwhana and in many other bloody engagements related in these pages. This riveting account goes on to describe the part played by the force in two Boer Wars, various tribal uprisings, the Zulu Rebellion of 1906 as well as the activities of lone policemen whose 'beat' covered hundreds of square miles and who ...

Three accounts of the brave women volunteers of the V.A.Ds during the Great War Although the wars of the later 19th century, such as the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War, offered insights into what warfare would become as the industrial age developed, nothing could prepare anyone for the global conflict that became the First World War. Here was a lethal combination of warring nations, whose troops were armed with the most sophisticated weapons that technology could devise, each with the means of mass production to manufacture and deliver them. For the first time it was possible to wage war on a grand scale on land, in the air and beneath and upon the oceans. This was a war where millions of men took part in battle and, in consequence, stripped the production and support services workforces from their home countries. Women, already impatient for political reform, stepped forward to make a vital contribution to the war effort and in so doing changed their status in western society forever. There were many volunteer organisations who were relied upon to support the fighting troops, including the Scottish Women's Hospitals, the F.A.N.Ys, the Y.M.C.A and those who are the subject of this book-the V.A.Ds-the Voluntary Aid Detachments. Three quarters of V.A.Ds were women and girls and they became ambulance drivers, mechanics, cooks, clerks and learned trades which were normally the province of men. But it is in their role as nurses during the conflict for which the...

Duncan Carmichael Ayr United at War

The centenary, in 2014, of the outbreak of the Great War was the prompt to complete this study of the social and playing impact on Ayr United - and the clubs in the family tree - of the Boer War, the Great War, the Second World War and Afghanistan. The stories of the Ayr FC club doctor stationed at a concentration camp in the Boer War and the old player who carried out a civilian commando raid in the same conflict are mixed with the humour in the account of the Provost of Ayr being the only person in the town who knew that the Boer War was over, but not bothering to tell anyone. The Great War brought local chaos with shortages and strikes in the town, and players killed or wounded in action. The film "Escape To Victory" has roots in a barely documented chapter of history from the Great War, including a key character destined to manage Ayr United. And why did Ayr Town Council urge the people not to celebrate VE Day? The tales of the soldier who preferred Afghanistan to Kilmarnock, and the arrival of a most illustrious visitor in that same theatre of war, bring the story up to date.

MILITARY LEGISLATION IN 1861. The military system under which, in two campaigns of seven weeks each, Prussia humiliated Austria, in 1866, and subverted the French Empire in 1870, was the joint product of soldiers and statesmen, who began their laborers (in 1806) immediately after the disastrous battle of Jena. The military system under which we subdued the Rebellion was established by Congress in less than four weeks. The energy and haste with which the new Congress set to work to repair the neglect of its predecessors, may be inferred from the number and character of the bills and the joint resolution introduced in the Senate on the 6th of July, two days after the opening of the session, which bills were as follows: A bill to authorize the employment of volunteers to aid in enforcing the laws and protecting public property; a bill to increase the present military establishment of the United States; a bill providing for the better organization of the military establishment; a bill for the organization of a volunteer militia force, to be called the National Guardof the United States; also a joint resolution to ratify an...

Warren Moise Rebellion in the Temple of Justice. The Federal and State Courts in South Carolina During the War Between the States

Ghost Courts of the War Between the StatesIn 1860, news of Abraham Lincoln's election arrived in Charleston like a fire alarm. In the United States courtroom on Chalmers Street, the grand jury simply refused to go on. All eyes are on the judge. In a dramatic moment, Judge A.G. Magrath, tears off his robes and tells jurors and spectators that, rather than continuing under tyranny, his Temple of Justice is forever closed. Thus in this long-since forgotten room took place the first official act of disunion, predating the Ordinance of Secession by over a month and lighting the fuse that lead to war. Preserving a piece of history few knew existed, trial attorney Warren Moise takes the reader back in time to the courts and law practice of a different era. Ride into the frontier town of Spartanburg by night with two tired lawyers where to their surprise they see hundreds of sweating men fighting bare-fisted in the flickering torch light. Just as important, learn the never-before documented role of the bench and bar in the battle for secession and of the Confederate States court, where the CS Attorney prosecuted former US Attorneys James L. Petigru and Edward McCrady for contempt because they defied Confederate law.

The war of the medical menThis book stands out as distinctive and different among the many other books being published in the centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War, most of which will concentrate on the tumultuous battles of the period. This was war that embraced virtually the whole planet, involved all the people of the combatant nations and employed every resource, knowledge and skill in the war effort. Leonaur intends to recognise the contributions of all people-men or women, soldiers or civilian volunteers, on the battle front or the home front-who were involved in the Great War, and is releasing material covering subjects that may well be absent from the catalogues of most other publishers. Today we take for granted the expert medical staff who support our armed services, but at the time of the First World War, only 50 or so years had elapsed since her concern about terrible conditions in the Crimea brought Florence Nightingale to public notice, and where a wound was a death sentence and disease killed more men than enemy fire. In the Great War, Army surgeons had to cope with tremendous workloads when the weapons of the industrial age inflicted ghastly injuries as they scythed down men in their thousands. This book contains two first-hand accounts-brought together for interest and good value-by British military surgeons, who risked their own lives to save others. A lively, engaging history of The Great War written for a new generation of readers In recent years, scholarship on World War I has turned from a fairly narrow focus on military tactics, weaponry, and diplomacy to incorporate considerations of empire, globalism, and social and cultural history. This concise history of the first modern, global war helps to further broaden the focus typically provided in World War I surveys by challenging popular myths and stereotypes to provide a new, engaging account of The Great War. The conventional World War I narrative that has evolved over the past century is that of an inevitable but useless war, where men were needlessly slaughtered due to poor decisions by hidebound officers. This characterization developed out of a narrow focus on the Western Front promulgated mainly by British historians. In this book, Professor Proctor provides a broader, more multifaceted historical narrative including perspectives from other fronts and spheres of interest and a wider range of participants. She also draws on recent scholarship to consider the gendered aspect of war and the ways in which social class, religion, and cultural factors shaped experiences and memories of the war. Structured chronologically to help convey a sense of how the conflict evolved Each chapter considers a key interpretive question, encouraging readers to examine the extent to which the war was total, modern, and global Challenges outdated stereotypes created through a focus on the Western Front Considers the war in light of recent scholarship on empire, global history, gender, and culture Explores ways in which the war and the terms of peace shaped the course of the 20th century World War I: A Short History is sure to become required reading in undergraduate survey courses on WWI, as well as courses in military history, the 20th century world, or the era of the World Wars.

Maria Voorhees Maydan Diamond Mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Document from the year 2015 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 95, University of California, Berkeley , course: Peace & Conflict Studies, language: English, abstract: This paper is intended to trace the evolution of conflict diamond mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the success of international effort by means of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme to eliminate conflict by means of civil war, war, terrorism or insurgency. By evaluating the Kimberley Process and synthesizing the views of different authors, organizations and critics, I determine whether or not the process has accomplished what it set out to do and if it should be kept. Diamond mining is part of the cycle of natural resource exploitation that plagues the Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as many other parts of Africa, for decades in diamonds and centuries in human labor and other resources. The diamond issue was lowly ranked on the international radar for decades and became a clear priority during several civil wars in Africa in the 1990s. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is an international effort that was put in place to eliminate conflict diamonds from being sold and financing war, insurgent groups or terrorism.

Julien H. Bryan Ambulance 464 Encore Des Blesses. The Experiences of an American Volunteer with the French Army During the First World War

Experiences of a motor ambulance driverThe author of this book was a Princeton student who became a member and driver of the American Ambulance Field Service-a group of young volunteers who travelled to Europe to assist the French war effort during the Great War before the United States took an active part in the conflict. His is a personal story derived from diary notes he made on active service. Although he freely admits to the reader that he volunteered to see the war and experience some excitement predictably his actual experiences of the battlefield and the suffering of French soldiers and civilians alike made a profound impression upon him. Bryan provides the reader with a clear and interesting view of the life of an American volunteer driver and his impressions of war in the trenches with the French Army on the Western Front. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket.

Patton Galloway The Loyal Traitor

History portrays the Revolution as united Americans rising up against British tyranny. In fact, the colonists were equally divided between Rebels, Loyalists and neutrals. Joseph Galloway was a leading Loyalist. Before the war, he was one of the most powerful and respected men in the colonies. As Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assemebly and a prolific writer, he worked to perserve the peace during two decades of unrest. As a member of the Continental Congress, he argued for consitutional reform instead of rebellion. When war broke out, he joined the British, who made him superintendent of occupied Philadelphia. When the British abandoned the city, he went to London and became spokesman for the refugees there. He died in exile, barred from the country he loved. His story deals with forgotten aspects of the Revolution, such as the persecution of Quaker pacifists, the British command's reluctance to wage war, and how the rebellion divided friends and families.

John Buchan John Buchan.s 1914. the World at War-The Naval Conflict . Global Campaigns of the Opening Year of the First World War

Over the seas and far away-the world at war In the late summer of 1914, the eyes of the world were fixed upon Europe as seemingly unstoppable German armies simultaneously marched eastwards and westwards subduing nations and forcing their armies to retreat. This was the beginning of an industrial war without precedent which would send shockwaves across the globe. This book, specially compiled by Leonaur's editors from John Buchan's excellent writings on the First World War, concentrates on the world beyond mainland Europe in the early months of the war. Readers will discover the naval battles of Heligoland Bight, Coronel, the Falkland Islands and Dogger Bank as the Imperial German Navy tested its mettle against the might of the Royal Navy. Here are accounts of German naval raiders such as the 'Emden' and the naval bombardments of British seaside towns. German and British colonial and regular troops clashed in East and West Africa and actions were fought on the coast of China and upon remote Pacific Islands. Disaffected Boers rose in rebellion in South Africa and Germany's ally, the Ottoman Turkish Empire joined the fray making advances in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) and towards the strategically vital Suez Canal in Egypt. In 1914 this was a conflict far removed from the familiar mud, wire and trenches that have become emblematic of the First World War. This is a highly recommended overview of the world at war created especially to mark the centenary of the ou...

At war with the Escadrilles of FranceHenry Farré was an observer with French bombers during the Great War and was thus in a position to have a clear understanding of the subject of his writings. This fascinating book is partly comprised of Farré's own experiences and his view-combined with contributions from his comrades in arms-of the French effort for the war in the air. Within its pages we share the experiences of the French Aces and join the bombers on raids in daylight and night-time. There are interesting observations and anecdotes of aerial photography flights, the bombing of enemy held cities and harbours and the work of the aviators who operated far out to sea to torpedo German submarines. This is a vital book for every student of the early air forces in combat.

Joyce Cary Memoir of the Bobotes

A stirring account of war in the Balkans. Joyce Cary was 23 years old at the start of the Balkan War of 1912-1913. A one-time art student in Edinburgh and Paris and newly down from Trinity College, Oxford he went through the war as a stretcher-bearer in the Red Cross. Shortly after his return, the possessor of the Montenegrin equivalent of the Military Cross, he wrote Memoir of the Bobotes without thought of publication. It is an extraordinarily vivid account of a forgotten war fought by peasants under primitive conditions - yet particularly fascinating today to readers with memories of later Balkan wars. It is both a moving and illuminating account of the war but it also offers a self-portrait of a young, upper-class Englishman - idealistic, sensitive, romantic - living in the belief that ‘there would be no more wars’.

After a brief period of traditional cavalry operations in the opening months of the war, the Household Cavalry took its part in the gruelling trench warfare that typified the British effort in Belgium and France. The author - a regular serving soldier - provides a vivid and entertaining account of cavalry life in the pre-war period, action against mounted Uhlans and of his experiences in the front line under rifle fire and bombardment.

One day, one of them, Coordinator Jivane Perich, becomes aware of this monstrous injustice and, on the eve of the most formidable battle of this forever war, decides to lead a Clone Rebellion...P.J. Hérault is a grandmaster of French science fiction who has been favorably compared by genre scholars and critics to such figures as Robert Heinlein, David Weber and Peter F. Hamilton. In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious Cyrano life achievement award. If there is a common thread in Hérault's works, it is the futility of armed conflict and their author's deep aversion to violence. Ironically, while many of his heroes are former military, they never hesitate to take the measures necessary to survive and achieve peace and justice, as is the case with The Clone Rebellion, published in 2005.

George Peck How Private George Peck Put Down the Rebellion. the Humorous Exploits of a Union Cavalryman During the American Civil War

A different kind of eyewitness to war-with laughter! The humorous military memoir is no new phenomenon. There is a rich heritage of this style of writing created by a natural tendency for men in adversity to seek humour at every opportunity and, indeed, to recall those moments in preference to memories of pain and misery. Inevitably, there are those soldiers whose sense of the comic soars above their comrades and so the 'military comedian' is born. The more acute this sense is, the more the tale parts company with reality and the straightforward reporting of actual events. This is one such book and all the more enjoyable for it. Is it fiction? It is certainly not all fact. Did the author know what it was to be a Union horse soldier? That certainly rings true because this book contains the depth of insight and knowledge that commonly comes only from first hand experience, and as the author comes in contact with the sharpest end and tragedy of war the humour is replaced-as it always is in such works-with a touching humanity. Behind the humour there is a real sense of the times-made the more poignant by exaggeration-and this creates a book filled with rewards of every kind.

This book is an effort to re-excite literary interest in the brilliant yet unique work of this unsung hero whose singular contribution to English Literature is not limited to War Poetry alone. Born around the turn of the 20th century, Rosenberg reflects a distinct individualistic streak in his poetry which is a combination of 'the sacred' and 'the voluptuous'. The book explores 'the scriptural' and 'the sculptural' aspects which shape his poetic make-up including his war poems. Its an intensive study based upon an in-depth analysis of Rosenberg's poems, his letters and his lectures on art.

Marcel Dupont Chasseur of 1914 - Experiences of the twilight of the French Light Cavalry by a young officer during the early battles of the Great War in Europe

Chasseur of 1914 - The first months of war through the eyes of a French regular cavalry officer. This is a fascinating and unusual book. Written in the early years of the Great War in Europe by a young professional officer of Chasseurs a Cheval, this is a lyrical work full of enthusiasm, idealism and conviction in the spirit of the Light Cavalry. In places the reader can easily imagine it is the account of a Napoleonic or 2nd Empire cavalryman - so similar are the scenes of campaigning against the common Prussian enemy. Dupont's regiment is brigaded with the Chasseurs de Afrique engaged in mounted warfare at the Battle of the Marne and after. As 1915 approaches they are dismounted to fight as infantry in Belgium where Dupont takes part in the Battle of the Yser. This book offers a 'snapshot' in time - a view of war in which the writer still dreams of Lasalle and Murat untarnished by the war of attrition to come..

John Pester To Fight the Mahrattas. The Journal of an Officer of the 2nd Bengal Native Infantry 1802-1806

An essential account of the conquest of IndiaIt is perhaps surprising that although India was the brightest jewel in the British Imperial Crown. there is comparatively little in print today about the many wars which were fought to win it. These had raged for nearly a century before the Sikhs of the Punjab were subjugated and the Sepoy Army rose in rebellion in the middle of the nineteenth century. The Duke of Wellington fought his hardest won victory, by his own assessment, in India at Assaye during the Second Mahratta War before he set foot in Iberia or bested Napoleon on the slopes of Waterloo. This is the story of a much more humble British soldier-an officer of the Bengal Army during the war against Scindia and Holkar. This is a substantial book-a diary-written in great detail by a man of the times. Pester takes us on campaign, onto the battlefield and to the assault in great sieges. His account of sporting life in the Indian jungles makes no less entertaining reading.

With historical distance, Cold War anthropology has begun to emerge as a distinct field within the discipline. This book brings a number of different approaches to bear on the questions raised by anthropology's Cold War history. The contributors show how anthropologists became both tools and victims of the Cold War state during the rise of the United States in the post-War period. Examining the intersection between science and power, this book is a compelling read for anthropologists, historians, sociologists, and anyone interested in the way in which colonial and neo-colonial knowledge is produced and constructed.

A clash of empires in Italy Variously called, 'The Second Italian War of Independence,' 'The Franco-Austrian War.' 'The Austro-Sardinian War' and 'The Austro-Piedmontese War' this notable European conflict of the middle years of the nineteenth century played a pivotal role in the shaping of modern Europe. The declining Austro-Hungarian empire of the Hapsburgs struggled to maintain its hold on the Italian states as they fought to create a unified nation. An alliance of Sardinia and France fought the Austrian Empire in northern Italy where, for the final time, both protagonists were commanded in the field by their respective emperors. The conflict was short, lasting only from May to July in 1859, but it included the notable battles of Magenta and Solferino which were both allied victories. The outcome of the war was a negotiated peace prompted by France's desire not to draw Prussia into the war. This book is drawn from reports made by the Times reporter on the spot and enhanced by forty illustrations by Carlo Bossoli who was a well known scenic artist of the period.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Edward G. Longacre Lincoln's Cavalrymen. A History of the Mounted Forces of the Army of the Potomac, 1861-1865

Lincoln's Cavalrymen describes the organizational, administrative, and operational history of the mounted arm of "Mr. Lincoln's Army." Historian Edward G. Longacre consulted at least fifty manuscript collections pertaining to general officers of cavalry, as well as the unpublished letters and diaries of more than 450 officers and enlisted men, representing almost every mounted unit in the Army of the Potomac. The result is the most comprehensive history of the Union cavalry to date. It covers the gamut of cavalry life-not only field operations but also the recruiting, organizing, mounting, remounting, equipping, training, tactical instruction, and war-long support of this critical branch of the nineteenth-century army. The book vividly portrays the cavalry's most influential commanders and assesses the depth and quality of its leadership. Longacre also seeks to place the cavalry in the context of the army and the war effort as a whole.Edward G. Longacre is the author of numerous articles and twenty-four books on the Civil War, including The Cavalry at Gettysburg, winner of the Fletcher Pratt Award for best nonfiction book on the Civil War, and Gentleman and Soldier: A Biography of Wade Hampton III, winner of the Douglas Southall Freeman History Award.

Along with Jenny and her family, he discovers writings and artifacts from the bloodiest war in American history, unravelling more of the mystery that surrounds the hideaway. What they find is a tale of the ugliness and brutality that developed in North Alabama between those who favored Secession and those who wished to remain loyal to the Union or even neutral during the war. In this time and place rank with fear, there are accounts of rebellion, espionage, horrendous acts of aggression, and a young school teacher who is caught in the middle of it all. There is also mention of a sanctuary… a hiding place for Union spies located on the plantation itself.
