Bachelor Thesis from the year 1996 in the subject Pedagogy - Higher Education, grade: Very Good, Ateneo de Naga University, course: B.S. Psychology, language: English, abstract: Excellence is what universities inspire and inculcate to their students. What connect universities to their students are teachers. For the students, the teachers are the faces and images of excellence. Thus, what makes teachers exemplary of excellence as perceived by students? If students perceive their teacher as excellent and effective, does this perception impact on their academic performance? In the literature, there exists a consensus of what is an effective teacher. Studies focus on the qualities and traits of this teacher. Among these qualities, which one is most preferred by students? Do students with various academic performance differ in their perception and preference of an effective teacher? Are these qualities related to the academic performance of the students? This study shows that there is a ranking of qualities of an effective that the students with different academic performance prefer. And there is no relation between the perception of an effective and students' academic performance.

In Somaliland mathematics is performed poorly in secondary schools. In 2010-2014, the mean score of mathematics was 53.95% against 73.72% in Languages, 68.68% in Sciences, and 83.16% in S/Studies. But the influence of personal characteristics of the teacher had not been investigated. Guided by Trait Theory of Personality, the study used a cross sectional research design, on a stratified sample of 350 students and 16 teachers in 10 secondary schools in Borama District, in February of 2014. The study found teacher gender (t [14] = -.276, p = .785), and teacher qualification (F [1, 14] = .578, p = .568) had no significant influence on students' performance. But teacher experience (F [1, 14] = 4.375, p = .022), and self-efficacy (F [1, 14] = 10.790, p = .000) had a significant influence on students' performance. The study concluded that teacher's personal characteristics influence performance of students in mathematics. The study recommends that MoEHS conduct awareness education to change the attitude that mathematics is a male friendly subject; and that an experimental study be done to determine the actual effect of teachers' personal characteristics on the performance of students.

A successful design for building a Learning Trajectory (LT) requires an understanding of how students think and successive refinements on LT based on the empirical data. As a result this study aims to understand students' strategies and students' performance differences as they worked on reallocation and covariation items by using Piagetian clinical interview methodology (Opper, 1977). Covariation and Reallocation are two levels of Equipartitioning Learning Trajectory (Confrey, 2009). Several factors (item-stem formats, classes and types, manipulative usage) may affect students' performance, and mathematical strategies. The findings from this study indicate that there is a significant difference in younger and older students' mathematical strategies on given problems. Younger students demonstrated a significant change in their problem-solving strategies and performance when presented with manipulatives. In addition students of all ages demonstrated changes in their problem-solving strategies when item-stems were presented in different formats and from varied item classes. This study supports teachers to diagnose students' need as they learn these key mathematics concepts.

One basic role of teachers in education is to promote academic performance. The success or otherwise depends solely on the many aspects which the school revolve, being in charge of daily running of the school academically. Schools can make a difference to students` performance and the teachers` input is one factor determining that success, hence it is important that the performance of a school is appraised against the performance of the teacher and vice versa. This book employs descriptive survey, the study population comprised 1650 respondents comprising 150 school principals and 1500 students drawn equally from the two areas, Multi stage stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, percentage, means and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Five null-hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study reveals that the input of Youth teachers on secondary school students was close in the two distinct areas in Kenya and Nigeria and, as such students` academic performance was significantly related to teachers` Work Habit, General Ability, Resourcefulness, Personal Qualities and Mental Stability.

Topological Foundations of Electromagnetism seeks a fundamental understanding of the dynamics of electromagnetism; and marshals the evidence that in certain precisely defined topological conditions, electromagnetic theory (Maxwell's theory) must be extended or generalized in order to provide an explanation and understanding of, until now, unusual electromagnetic phenomena. Key to this generalization is an understanding of the circumstances under which the so-called A potential fields have physical effects. Basic to the approach taken is that the topological composition of electromagnetic fields is the fundamental conditioner of the dynamics of these fields. The treatment of electromagnetism from, first, a topological perspective, continuing through group theory and gauge theory, to a differential calculus description is a major thread of the book. Suggestions for potential new technologies based on this new understanding and approach to conditional electromagnetism are also given.

The book is devoted to various problems arising in electromagnetic field interacting with matter. It belongs to what is usually called Electrodynamics of Continuous Media, or Classical Electromagnetism in Matter, or Optics and the Theory of Electrons. These subjects are usually left at a quasi-empirical or semi-phenomenological level. The present book introduces explicitly the degrees of motion of the electric polarization and magnetization of matter. This new approach renders Maxwell equations in matter a determined system of equations and allows specific solutions for a series of problems which might be of interest in today's nanoplasmonics and nanophotonics. The book includes both a basic exposition of fundamental things in Electromagnetism and various particular problems, some of them collected from papers published in scientific journals.

It is assumed that the reader already knows the definitions and techniques of the exterior calculus and the integration theorems of differential forms on manifolds and submanifolds of euclidean spaces. The text is divided in four chapters. Except Chapter 1, which is an introduction, each chapter is independent from the others. Chapter 2 studies the integration theorems that are obtained from the differential statements of classical Maxwell's equations. In Chapter 3, the Lorentz transformations are introduced to prove the relativist theorems of electromagnetism. Finally, in Section 4, Poisson's equation is introduced and solved by global integration.

In recent years, there has been much interest regarding motivation and its effect on achievement patterns. When students enjoy learning, they are more likely to show interest, value, and effort toward achievement, perform well, and persist in school (e.g., Vallerand et al., 1989). The purpose of the study is to develop and test a model, based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The model incorporates the assumption that intrinsic motivation positively affects math performance, whereas external regulation negatively affects math performance. It is assumed that math self-concept affects math performance both directly and indirectly through the mediating variable of intrinsic motivation. Finally, autonomy support can affect math performance both directly and indirectly through the mediator of math self-concept. Consistent with the predictions of SDT, when teachers support autonomy of students in the classroom, they provide a classroom climate that fosters math achievement. As teachers try to support students' competencies, they are more likely to foster students' self-perceptions of competence, which, in turn, promotes math achievement.

In Performance and Religion in Early Modern England, Matthew J. Smith seeks to expand our view of "the theatrical." By revealing the creative and phenomenal ways that performances reshaped religious material in early modern England, he offers a more inclusive and integrative view of performance culture.Smith argues that early modern theatrical and religious practices are better understood through a comparative study of multiple performance types: not only commercial plays but also ballads, jigs, sermons, pageants, ceremonies, and festivals. Our definition of performance culture is augmented by the ways these events looked, sounded, felt, and even tasted to their audiences. This expanded view illustrates how the post-Reformation period utilized new capabilities brought about by religious change and continuity alike. Smith posits that theatrical practice at this time was acutely aware of its power not just to imitate but to work performatively, and to create spaces where audiences could both imaginatively comprehend and immediately enact their social, festive, ethical, and religious overtures. Each chapter in the book builds on the previous ones to form a cumulative overview of early modern performance culture. This book is unique in bringing this variety of performance types, their archives, venues, and audiences together at the crossroads of religion and theater in early modern England. Scholars, graduate and undergraduate students, and those generally interested in th...

Community colleges serve the lion's share of the nation'spostsecondary students. In fact, 40% of all undergraduate students are enrolled in community colleges, these students account for nearly 30% of all STEM undergraduatemajors in postsecondary institutions. These students serve as a core element of the STEM pipeline into four-year colleges and universities via the community collegetransfer function. Moreover, community colleges are the primary postsecondary access point for non-traditional students, including students of color, first-generation,low-income, and adult students. This is a particularly salient point given that these populations are sordidly underrepresented among STEM graduates and in the STEMworkforce.Increasing success among these populations can contribute significantly to advancing the nation's interests in STEM. As such, the community college is situated as animportant site for innovative practices that have strong implications for bolstering the nation's production and sustenance of a STEM labor force. The ranking of schools and students in national examinations is meant to encourage positive competition. In addition, the public posting of examination outcomes is meant to hold schools and teachers accountable for the students’ performance on standardized examinations. However, ranking has been known to create the impression that, there are good and bad schools in Kenya. The top performing schools are regarded as effective schools while low performing are regarded as ineffective. This belief influences enrolment, promotion rates and performance trends in different schools as revealed by this study. Both the teachers and students felt that ranking should be improved and thus called for a system of assessment that encompassed all the aspects instead of focusing on academic performance only. This would ensure that ranking of schools and students did not glorify academic achievement at the expense of talent and other virtues.

This volume is intended for researchers, curriculum developers, policy makers, and classroomteachers who want comprehensive information on what students at grades 4, 8, and 12 (the gradesassessed by NAEP) can and cannot do in mathematics. After two introductory chapters on thedesign of NAEP, the volume contains a chapter on the challenges in analyzing NAEP data at theitem level followed by five chapters that report 2005 through 2013 student performance on specificassessment items. These chapters are organized by content area and then by topic (e.g., understanding of place value, knowledgeof transformations, ability to use metric and U.S. systems of measurement) and thus provide baseline data on the proportion ofstudents who are able to complete the mathematics tasks currently used in the upper elementary, middle, and high‐schoolmathematics curriculum. Additional chapters focus on student reasoning, U.S. performance on international assessments, andusing construct analysis rather than percent correct on clusters of items to understand student knowledge on specific mathematicstopics.Several themes emerge from the volume. It has been discovered that most teachers and students shun teaching and learning these plays because of: the language of Shakespeare which is archaic, the plots which are complicated, lack of stage directions and the use of blank verse. In the bid to unravel the myths and propose ways that can possibly erase the negative attitudes of both the teachers and the students, a study of Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences together with multimodality approaches was taken. Therefore, lecturers are faced with the urgent task of not only providing students with information about the subject, but also to help them master the material at a deep qualitative level, by presenting the specific features of general approaches to the statement and the solution of problems in theoretical physics. One of the ways to study field theory is the practical one, where the students can deepen their knowledge of the theoretical material and develop problem-solving skills. This book includes a concise theoretical summary of the main branches of field theory and electrodynamics, worked examples, and some problems for the student to solve. The book is written for students of theoretical and applied physics, and corresponds to the curricula of the theoretical courses "Field theory" and "Electrodynamics" for physics undergraduates.
