Crop land suitability analysis is a prerequisite to achieve optimum utilization of available land resource for sustainable agricultural production. The objectives of this study were to set up detailed information on the suitability of the land under consideration and to establish the map of land suitability for major crops using GIS techniques. The study was conducted at Fogera Plain, South Gonder, Ethiopia. A frame work for land evaluation FAO (1976) recommended an approach for land suitability evaluation for crops interms of suitability rating from highly suitable to not suitable based on climatic, terrain data and soil properties crop wise. Selection of the location of the soil sampling spots was based on free and grid survey techniques and their locations were taken on the field using Global Positioning System (GPS). Geographical information system (GIS) was used to develop crop land suitability map of the study area.

In today’s world, as we see the rapid population growth, irrigation agriculture becomes more important to meet the human needs. It allows double cropping and enables stabilization of supply and production of vegetables and fruits. Land and water resource suitability analysis plays an important role in maintaining and developing land and water use on a spatial basis of agriculture. This book identified the evaluation of land suitability for irrigation intensification. The aim of this study was to analyze the water and land resources potential and irrigation water management in river catchments of Andasa watershed for irrigation suitability by using Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing. Identification of potential irrigable land, and socioeconomic factors that influence the use of surface irrigation water management were followed to analyze this irrigation potential. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) evaluation method was used to evaluate the physical land characteristics of the study area for surface irrigation. The factors that were considered for evaluations of the land for surface irrigation include: slope, land use land cover, river distance, soil.

A novel approach to decision engineering, with a verified framework for modeling human reasoning Soft Computing Evaluation Logic provides an in-depth examination of evaluation decision problems and presents comprehensive guidance toward the use of the Logic Scoring of Preference (LSP) method in modeling complex decision criteria. Fully aligned with current developments in computational intelligence, the discussion covers the design and use of LSP criteria for evaluation and comparison in diverse areas, such as search engines, medical conditions, real estate, space management, habitat mitigation projects in ecology, and land use and residential development suitability maps, with versatile transfer to other similar decision-modeling contexts. Human decision making is rife with fuzziness, imprecision, uncertainty, and half-truths—yet humans make evaluation decisions every day. In this book, such decision processes are observed, analyzed, and modeled. The result is graded logic, a soft computing mathematical infrastructure that provides both formal logic and semantic generalizations of classical Boolean logic. Graded logic is used for logic aggregation in the context of evaluation models consistent with observable properties of human reasoning. The LSP method, based on graded logic and logic aggregation, is a vital component of an industrial-strength decision engineering framework. Thus, the book: Provides detailed theoretical background for graded logic Provides a theory of logic aggregators Explains the LSP method for designing complex evaluation criteria and their use Shows techniques for evaluation, comparison, and selection of complex systems, as well as the cost/suitability analysis, optimization, sensitivity analysis, tradeoff analysis, and missingness-tolerant aggregation Includes a survey of available LSP software tools, including ISEE, ANSY and LSP.NT. With quantitative modeling of human reasoning, novel approaches to modeling decision criteria, and a verified decision engineering framework applicable to a broad array of applications, this book is an invaluable resource for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners working within the decision engineering realm.

This book focuses on the work of one of the leading African scholars on the land question and agrarian transformation in Africa—Sam Moyo. It offers a critical discussion, in conversation with Sam Moyo, of the land question and the response of African states. Since independence, African states have been trying to address the colonial legacy on land policy and governance. After six decades of formulating and implementing land reforms, most countries have not succeeded in decolonising approaches to land policy and the administrative framework. The book brings together the broader debates on the implications of decolonisation of Africa’s land policy. Through case studies from several African countries, the book offers an empirical analysis on land reforms and the emerging land relations, and how these affect land allocation and use, including agricultural production. Most of the chapters discuss how the unresolved land question in post-colonial Africa impacts on agricultural production and rural development broadly. The failure to decolonise colonial land policy and the imported tenure systems has left post-colonial African states dancing to two tunes, resulting in schizophrenic land and agrarian policies. The book demonstrates that the failure by African states to reconcile imported and indigenous land tenure systems and practices is evident in the deliberate denigration of customary tenure. It is also evident in the rising land inequality and the neglect of the agricultural sec...

Fertilizer suitability mapping is the way of determining nutrients demanded by specific crop type on the basis of soil sample testing results. It is a very important method for modern precision agriculture to increase fertilizer use efficiency and environmental friendliness. In order to make efficient fertilizer application for wheat at Lume Watershed, the book tried to map the plant macro nutrients, physical land suitability and diammonium phosphate (DAP) suitability for wheat. Starting from soil sample collection to final map, standard laboratory analysis methods plus GIS and remote sensing tools were used. Because both potassium and nitrogen showed non-significant variation within the watershed, fertilizer suitability map was only made for phosphorous variability. The DAP requirement for wheat was determined as the deference of phosphorous critical level for wheat from initial phosphorus level in the soil. Finally by applying Krignig interpolation DAP suitability map was prepared for wheat. The DAP requirement map of the area reveals that about 51.38%, 20.25%, 18.40% and 8.43% need 50 to75 kg/ha, 75 to 100kg/ha, 25 to 50kg/ha and greater than 100kg/ha respectively.

One of the greatest challenges of sustainable agricultural development is the inability of a country to meet its domestic food needs and provide surplus for export and future shocks, especially for a developing country like Nigeria. Agricultural production is thus essential for meeting domestic food demand, and generating broad-based growth necessary for rural development. Nigeria’s economy is agriculture-based, and agricultural production has the potential impact of improving rural welfare. This book presents an analysis of the concept, policy and impact of agricultural production in Nigeria. Data on agricultural inputs and production, real agricultural gross domestic product, foreign private investments in agriculture, agricultural budgets as well as infrastructural and industrial development indices were analysed against extant policy regimes. The book reveals that increase in agricultural production led to significant improvement in rural welfare in Nigeria. It further stresses the importance of the expansion of land area under irrigation in order to sustain agricultural production and boost rural welfare in Nigeria.

Its approach is practical and not academic. Along the way it points out some of the biggest pitfalls to avoid. Hopefully, it will give you enough knowledge to be able to identify an agricultural law problem when you see one, and, having done so, to know that the problem may have to be dealt with using special tools, rather than by mixing and matching knowledge from other forms of commercial land-holding (such as business tenancies under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954).ABOUT THE AUTHORChristopher McNall is a barrister at 18 St John Street Chambers, Manchester where he specialises in disputes about tenanted and freehold farms and land (and especially agricultural tenancies under the Agricultural Holdings Act 1986), taxation (especially of agricultural land), proprietary estoppel, and inheritance. Hence, this study was conducted to investigate land use/ land cover dynamics, its drivers and impacts in Nada Asendabo watershed,Gilge Gibe sub catchment of Ethiopia. It covers an area of 8,012 ha. Information Was extracted from three period land sat images (1973 MSS, 1986 TM and 2004 ETM+). Analysis of data was accomplished through integrated use of ERDAS imagine (version 9.2), Arc GIS software and SPSS version 16.00. Six land use/ land cover classes were selected for the study. Results from land use/ land cover change analysis showed an increase in agriculture land and built-up area at the expense of forest land, grass land, reverine forest and bush land. The result of socioeconomic data analysis reported that agriculture, both crop and livestock productivity is declining. Among many factors, the major production constraints was directly associated mainly with land use change. Hence, Studies of land use/ land cover dynamics can be used for land use planner, natural resource managers and policy makers to provide a management and decision process.

Land degradation is rising in Northern Ghana and the national government and various NGOs are seeking to address and to prevent the derivative consequences of this development. Unsustainable farming practice contributes to land degradation, and agricultural extension service is a shared means of intervention for the promotion of sustainable farming. By taking a deeper look at the state-NGO-society dynamics, the work provides an analysis of the consequences of actors' different understandings and approaches to unsustainable land management. The analysis is focused around the interplay between historical political discourses, national policies and specific NGO interventions with relation to extension services. The analysis casts light on power relations and their influence on land management in Northern Ghana. Despite the fact that the government and the NGO used as a case are placed within different discourses regarding views on small-scale farmers' capabilities, there are indications that the gap between the two actors is closing. An increasing emphasis on decentralisation and participation is creating new opportunities and room for manoeuvre for more actors.

The 20-year reform of the agricultural sector in Albania has remained in a very small structure of agricultural economies, less than 2 hectares / farms. Albania continues to be a net importing country, with 7 times more imports than exports. A problem for the agricultural sector is also the irrigation system. At present, only 30% of agricultural land is under water. In order to have water for irrigation in every piece of arable land, the drainage and irrigation system of the country should be recovered. Farmers' participation plays a key role in developing the economy and reducing poverty. Without participation, there would be neither agricultural programs nor development. Lack of participation in decision-making of agricultural policy tools may lead to failure to develop agriculture. In this study is used the logistic regression analysis to evaluate the factor that have a positive effect on agricultural activities

Good land management strategies are known to play an important role in improving agricultural production. Fencing is such an example. This work looks at the contribution of fencing to agricultural production in semi-arid Kenya. The motivation of the work is that there is lack of empirical data that has evaluated the contribution of fence as a productive investment in Kenya.Fencing is treated as a productive input in the production function alongside capital, labour, land and land quality. Cross-sectional primary data is used to achieve the objectives of this work. The Cobb-Douglas (CD) specification is used in measuring the contribution of fence to production. The instrumental variable technique is applied to test for endogeneity of the fence variable. Technical efficiency is estimated and the Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used to achieve this. Fence is observed to improve production and the policy implication is that since fencing has led to a series of positive benefits, there is need for governments to recognize the positive impact of fence and empower those communities who would wish to fence their land.

Empiricism provides the backbone of knowledge creation within social science disciplines (e.g., psychology, sociology) and applied domains of study (e.g., education, administration) alike. Yet, relative to such domainsof inquiry, comparatively little empirical research on evaluation has occurred, and the research knowledge basebeen infrequently synthesized and integrated to influence theory and practice. The proposed book aims to fillthis void with regard to participatory evaluation, a set of collaborative approaches to evaluation that isreceiving considerable attention of late, including a growing body of empirical studies. The authors begin in Part 1 with the delineation of a widely known and familiar conceptual framework forparticipatory evaluation. They then use the framework in Part 2 as a guide to conducting an extensive review of the extant empirical knowledge base inparticipatory evaluation, culminating in a thematic analysis of what we know about the approach. In Part 3 the authors focus on methodologicalconsiderations of doing research on participatory evaluation through a critique of existing studies and an explication of design choices drawn fromtheir own research program. The book concludes in Part 4 with implications for moving the field forward in terms of important research questions, methodological direction and evaluation practice. This book will be of central interest to evaluation theorists and to those who choose to conduct research on evaluation; appeal will...

The interpretation and evaluation of scientific evidence and its presentation in a court of law is central both to the role of the forensic scientist as an expert witness and to the interests of justice. This book aims to provide a thorough and detailed discussion of the principles and practice of evidence interpretation and evaluation by using real cases by way of illustration. The presentation is appropriate for students of forensic science or related disciplines at advanced undergraduate and master's level or for practitioners engaged in continuing professional development activity. The book is structured in three sections. The first sets the scene by describing and debating the issues around the admissibility and reliability of scientific evidence presented to the court. In the second section, the principles underpinning interpretation and evaluation are explained, including discussion of those formal statistical methods founded on Bayesian inference. The following chapters present perspectives on the evaluation and presentation of evidence in the context of a single type or class of scientific evidence, from DNA to the analysis of documents. For each, the science underpinning the analysis and interpretation of the forensic materials is explained, followed by the presentation of cases which illustrate the variety of approaches that have been taken in providing expert scientific opinion.

Successive Association Agreements between the EU and its Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPCs) aimed mostly at fostering trade liberalization. The analysis of agricultural trade flows between both areas has been traditionally approached according to geographical proximity and political relations via quantitative trade models. Available evidence reveals serious difficulties to conduct thorough analysis with the mentioned models. An alternative analytical avenue would be the use of qualitative approaches linked to Global Value Chain analysis. This book focuses on analyzing the buyer side of the value chains for the main agricultural products sourced from MPCs to the EU, taking Spain as a representative case. The analysis provides primary information for better profiling the opportunities and constraints of these flows, and deriving implications to improve the efficiency of the target value chains. No previous references about the topic investigated were found in the specialized literature, which makes this research probably the first attempt to analyze Euro-Mediterranean agricultural trade dynamics using the value chain approach from the buyer market perspective.

Now a day the soil fertility of high land areas, where most of the agricultural activities have been done at the escarpments of the landscape, has been decreased. These in turn decrease the productivity of land because of the removal of soil and nutrient by erosion. Therefore the use of fertilizer has increased to compensate the removed nutrients through erosion. The change in land use is also another factor to increase or decrease the fertility of the land. The application of the same fertilizer rate at each landscape position lead us wastage or inefficient. This book, therefore, provides the variability of soil chemical fertility among different land use and landscape position, as well as soil deterioration indices. The analysis help some light on this variability, and especially useful to professionals like researchers, agriculture experts and instructors etc working in areas of soil fertility and decision makers who may use fertilizer in the high land areas or any else.
