This book is the first of a set dedicated to the mathematical tools used in partial differential equations derived from physics. Its focus is on normed or semi-normed vector spaces, including the spaces of Banach, Fréchet and Hilbert, with new developments on Neumann spaces, but also on extractable spaces. The author presents the main properties of these spaces, which are useful for the construction of Lebesgue and Sobolev distributions with real or vector values and for solving partial differential equations. Differential calculus is also extended to semi-normed spaces. Simple methods, semi-norms, sequential properties and others are discussed, making these tools accessible to the greatest number of students – doctoral students, postgraduate students – engineers and researchers without restricting or generalizing the results.

Quartino Daniela 500 color ideas for Small Spaces

Color is one of the mosl effective tools in architecture and interior design. One of its most important aspects is the effect it has on a person's mood: color has the power to contribute to the mental well-Being of the occupants of a house. Harmonious and welcoming surroundings can be obtained with one or two colors, or combinations of color. This may be a matter of personal taste, though color, and how it is applied, cannot be left to chance. It is important to understand the language of color in order to be able to create one's own environment. This book focuses on color and how to make the most of it in reduced spaces. Readers will no doubt find this book a great source of inspiration and will turn to the ideas and hundreds of illustrations within when making decisions about decoration. Concentrated on small spaces, the ideas presented in this book offer practical solutions for visually enlarging spaces and also demonstrate that 3 contemporary, stylish house is not necessarily a matter of size. The Harvard Design School Guide to Shopping

Shopping is arguably the terminal form of public activity. Through a battery of increasingly predatory forms, shopping has infiltrated-even replaced-almost every aspect of urban life. Town centers, suburbs, streets, and now airports, train stations, museums, hospitals, schools, the Internet, and the military are shaped by the mechanisms and spaces of shopping. The voracity by which shopping pursues the public has, in effect, made it one of the principal-if only-modes by which we experience the city. The Harvard Design School Guide to Shopping explores the spaces, people, techniques, ideologies, and inventions by which shopping has so dramatically refashioned the city. Perhaps the beginning of the twenty-first century will be remembered as the point where the urban could no longer be understood without shopping. Издание на английской языке.

In Necessary Spaces: Exploring the Richness of African American Childhood in the South, Saundra MurrayNettles takes the reader on a journey into neighborhood networks of learning at different times and places.Using autobiographical accounts, Nettles discusses the informal instructional practices of community"coaches" from the perspective of African American adults who look back on their childhood learningexperiences in homes, libraries, city blocks, schools, churches, places of business, and nature. Theseeyewitness accounts reveal "necessary spaces," the metaphor Nettles uses to describe seven recurringexperiences that converge with contemporary notions of optimal black child development: connection, exploration, design, empowerment, resistance, renewal, and practice.Nettles weaves the personal stories with social scientific theory and research and practical accounts of community-based initiatives to illuminate howlocal communities contributed human, built, and natural resources to support children's achievement in schools. The inquiry offers a timely andaccessible perspective on how community involvement for children can be developed utilizing the grassroots efforts of parents, children, and otherneighborhood residents; expertise from personnel in schools, informal institutions (such as libraries and museums); and other sectors interested indisparities in education, health, and the quality of physical settings.Grounded in the environmental memories of Afri...

Debnath Pradip On Lacunary Ideal Convergence in Intuitionistic Fuzzy N-Normed Spaces

This book deals with a concise study of convergence in intuitionistic fuzzy n-normed linear spaces. This book mainly contains the author's own research work in the area of lacunary ideal convergence. Fuzzy normed spaces have been an increasingly popular area of mathematical research in recent times, both in terms of theory and applications. But the availability of books in the area of fuzzy normed spaces is very rare. This book provides a good discussion on the development of both fuzzy and intuitionistic fuzzy set theory. The transition from fuzzy normed linear spaces to intuitionistic fuzzy n-normed linear spaces has been presented systematically. Anybody interested in the theory or application of fuzzy or intuitionistic fuzzy normed spaces will find this book more than useful. The book is written in such a way that mathematical prerequisites are minimum. Since the main subject of study in this book is a generalisaton of the concept of usual convergence, so all the related results in convergence have been incorporated in the book. This book may be used as a ready reference for an up to date account of results in the theory of fuzzy/intuitionistic fuzzy normed linear spaces.

Paul R. Halmos Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces

2012 Reprint of 1942 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. As a newly minted Ph.D., Paul Halmos came to the Institute for Advanced Study in 1938--even though he did not have a fellowship--to study among the many giants of mathematics who had recently joined the faculty. He eventually became John von Neumann's research assistant, and it was one of von Neumann's inspiring lectures that spurred Halmos to write "Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces." The book brought him instant fame as an expositor of mathematics. Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces combines algebra and geometry to discuss the three-dimensional area where vectors can be plotted. The book broke ground as the first formal introduction to linear algebra, a branch of modern mathematics that studies vectors and vector spaces. The book continues to exert its influence sixty years after publication, as linear algebra is now widely used, not only in mathematics but also in the natural and social sciences, for studying such subjects as weather problems, traffic flow, electronic circuits, and population genetics. In 1983 Halmos received the coveted Steele Prize for exposition from the American Mathematical Society for "his many graduate texts in mathematics dealing with finite dimensional vector spaces, measure theory, ergodic theory, and Hilbert space."

In April 2008 almost 1200 priests, deacons, vowed religious and lay ministers took part in a national summit to discuss the findings of the Emerging Models of Pastoral Leadership Project. This project identified one of the key marks of excellent parishes is that they are welcoming communities. At the same time, pastoral leaders surveyed by the same Emerging Models Project reported that this mark of excellence was the one at which they were least successful. As ever increasing numbers of parishes across the country are consolidated, the importance of practicing hospitality cannot be overemphasized. Drawing upon Scripture, current church documents, our rich faith tradition, and established change management principles, this book provides a practical, proven, spiritually based, how-to guide designed to support pastoral leaders in developing a comprehensive program for creating more welcoming parishes. Founded upon the mandate of the 2000 USCCB document, "Welcoming the Stranger Among Us," the process described in this book gives pastoral leaders a clear path towards establishing welcoming parish communities.

Olaniyi Iyiola Sobolev Spaces and Elliptic Partial Differential Equations

The main objective to the study of theory of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) is to insure or find out properties of solutions of PDE that are not directly attainable by direct analytical means. Certain function spaces have certain known properties for which solutions of PDEs can be classified. As a result, this work critically looked into some function spaces and their properties. We consider extensively, Lp-spaces, distribution theory and sobolev spaces. The emphasis is made on sobolev spaces, which permit a modern approach to the study of differential equations. Looking at the linear elliptic partial differential equations considered in this work, we see that the key is Lax-Milgram theorem and the full understanding of Sobolev spaces and its properties. We are able to remove the rigor associated with second order partial differential equations and present it in the form that we can easily handle through the function spaces discussed. The book is based on variational formulation of some Boundary Value Problems (PDEs) using some known theorem (Lax-Milgram Theorem) to ascertain the existence and uniqueness of weak solution to such linear Elliptic PDEs.

Barrie Jean Borich Apocalypse, Darling

From award-winning author Barrie Jean Borich comes Apocalypse, Darling, a narrative, lyric exploration of the clash between old and new. Set in the steel mill regions of Chicago and in Northwest Indiana, the story centers on Borich's return to a decimated landscape for a misbegotten wedding in which her spouse's father marries his high school sweetheart. The book is a lilting journey into an ill-fated moment, where families attempt to find communion in tense gathering spaces and across their most formative disappointments. Borich tells the story of the industrial heartland that produced the steel that made American cities, but also one of the most toxic environmental sites in the world. As concise as a poem and as sweeping as an epic novel, Apocalypse, Darling explores the intersection of American traditional and self-invented social identities and the destruction and re-greening of industrial cityscapes. Borich asks: can toxic landscapes actually be remediated and can patriarchal fathers ever really be forgiven? In a political climate where Borich is forced to daily re-enter the toxic wastelands she thought she'd long left behind, Apocalypse, Darling is an urgent collision of broken spaces, dysfunctional affections, and the reach toward familial and environmental repair.

Clyde Ellis TO CHANGE THEM FOREVER. Indian Education at the Rainy Mountain Boarding School, 1893-1920

Reservation boarding schools represented an important component in the U.S. government's campaign in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century to "civilize" American Indians according to Anglo-American standards. The history of the Rainy Mountain School in southwestern Oklahoma reveals much about the form and function of the Indian policy and its consequences for the Kiowa children who attended the school. In To Change Them Forever, Clyde Ellis surveys changes in government policy and tells how the Kiowa people resisted and accommodated the efforts of school personnel to transform them. Ellis combines archival research with personal memoirs, conversations with former students, and the school's official records to portray a school often at odds with official policy and frequently neglected by the Indian Service's bureaucracy.

Integrate poetics into real-world spaces by bringing theory down to earth Practical Poetics in Architecture takes poetics out of the theory class and into the design studio, showing architects how the atmospheric and experiential qualities of built structures can be intentionally considered and planned. With an emphasis on analysing and explaining the sensibility of poetics at work in designing and constructing architecture, this book features projects from architects around the world that demonstrate the principles of poetics come to life. The rich illustration of two hundred colour images, including analytical diagrams, plans, sections, and photos, make this insightful guide a highly visual foray into a topic that has thus far remained more theoretical than practical. The text is matter-of-fact and concrete, yet remains richly connected to its forbears and the writings of William Lethaby, Gaston Bachelard, and Steen Eiler Rasmussen. The perspective is contemporary in its examples and its connections to the evolving science of perception. An established seminar topic in theory classes around the world, poetics tends to rely heavily on classic philosophic texts – until now. Practical Poetics in Architecture brings theory down to earth to show architects how to invoke poetics when designing real projects. Integrate poetics principles into real-world designs Consider atmosphere in terms of form, space, and acoustics Study actual projects that bring poetics into real spaces Take cues from analytical diagrams of projects accounting for context Poetics – the accumulated experience of place, space, and culture – has become more critical in recent years as the atmospheric and experiential qualities of built spaces have become more elusive in the virtual age. Practical Poetics in Architecture provides real guidance for real projects, and brings poetics out of the mind and onto the plans.

Frank Lloyd Wright: The Rooms: Interiors and Decorative Arts

An invitation into the evocative, human-scaled, and artful interiors designed by Wright. "Frank Lloyd Wright: The Rooms" presents the warm interior spaces and exceptional design work of this beloved American master. Wright was an early proponent of total design. Unsatisfied with what was available in designing a given space or home, he invented what was needed, developing a language of architectural detail and styling that is unique and which extended to the tables, bookcases, easy chairs, sofas, and cabinets; to rugs and murals; to stonework; to stained glass light screens, which served as windows, doors, and room partitions; and lighting. This approach was manifested distinctly in each of his residential projects. This book offers the reader an immersion into this work by means of extraordinary artful detail in intimately explored rooms and spaces. From the Oak Park Home and Studio in Illinois to the majestically appointed Darwin D. Martin House with its abundance of art glass, including Wright's famous Tree of Life and Wisteria designs, this luxurious volume ranges over the whole of Wright's oeuvre. It highlights a number of Wright masterpieces, including Hollyhock House, the mysterious Aztec-like home and arts complex built on a hill in Los Angeles; the Dana House, with its luminous butterfly transom glass; and the fabled living room at Fallingwater.

American Evangelicals and Religious Diversity is a qualitative study of how religion and education intersect at one conservativeChristian school. The school is Evangelical and American. The school's curriculum is bible-based and fulfills its state'seducational requirements for high school graduation. While the school has an environment that is Evangelical, the studentslive in a religiously-diverse world. This book documents how three students and their teacher struggle to understand a worldthat challenges their faith. The context for this understanding is how the teacher presents and the three students come to understandCatholicism, Islam, and the indigenous religions of the Americas.Americans continue to debate whether religious schools are too parochial and do not prepare students to live a diverse society. It is the opinion of the editors that this book should put to rest some of this fear. We read the manuscript with a critical editorialeye but found the story a compelling one which challenged us to review the tenets of our own faith. The author's style of presentationis consistent with good scientific discourse yet impels the reader to a view inside the experience of the subjects of thestudy. Reading the manuscript was not only an informative experience but a faith affirming one too. We are very pleased topresent Kevin Taylor's book, American Evangelicals and Religious Diversity as an important part of our series on research onreligion and education.

Composition operators have been the subject matter of intensive study over past several decades and they find applications in ergodic theory ,quantum mechanics and other branches of mathematical and physical sciences . The 1st chapter of the book contains introductory material . The compact, Fredholm generalized composition operators are characterized in the second chapter. The Hermitian,Normal ,Quasi normal ,Isometric and co isometric generalized composition operators are presented in the third chapter. It is shown that most of the properties of the generalized multiplication operators differ from the multiplication operators acting on other function spaces .eg:- On most of the function spaces multiplication operators are normal .But this result is not valid incase of generalized multiplication operators on weighted Hardy spaces . In this book some light is thrown on differential and anti-differential operators acting on weighted Hardy spaces .

Rölvaag's Giants in the Earth, Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie, and Willa Cather's My Ántonia. Essentially, the textual analyses show the pioneer woman's evolving and dynamic reaction to both felicitous space and the open spaces of the western frontier as she progresses from completely loathing to totally embracing vast spaces. The texts discussed demonstrate the genesis and growth of the modern American, independent woman who successfully negotiated the volatile topics of gender and space.

This title concerns the use of a particle filter framework to track objects defined in high-dimensional state-spaces using high-dimensional observation spaces. Current tracking applications require us to consider complex models for objects (articulated objects, multiple objects, multiple fragments, etc.) as well as multiple kinds of information (multiple cameras, multiple modalities, etc.). This book presents some recent research that considers the main bottleneck of particle filtering frameworks (high dimensional state spaces) for tracking in such difficult conditions.

The work contained in this book goes along way into extending the boundary of topological concepts. The author uses very simple language to explain notions of topology and therefore provide an elaborate explanation of the hitherto difficult mathematical ideas. It is now clear that isotonic spaces can easily substitute topological spaces in the study of most concepts in topology. This book gives preliminary understanding of Topos theory.

The Rapid City Indian School was one of twenty-eight off-reservation boarding schools built and operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to prepare American Indian children for assimilation into white society. From 1898 to 1933 the "School of the Hills" housed Northern Plains Indian children--including Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, Shoshone, Arapaho, Crow, and Flathead--from elementary through middle grades.Scott Riney uses letters, archival materials, and oral histories to provide a candid view of daily life at the school as seen by students, parents, and school employees. The Rapid City Indian School, 1898-1933 offers a new perspective on the complexities of American Indian interactions with a BIA boarding school. It shows how parents and students made the best of their limited educational choices--using the school to pursue their own educational goals--and how the school linked urban Indians to both the services and the controls of reservation life.Scott Riney, who received a Ph.D. in history from Arizona State University, lives in Littleton, Colorado.

Briger Paul, Briger Cris Briger + Briger: Comfortable and Joyous Homes, City, Country and Lakeside

Designing a contemporary residence in the twenty-first century doesn't require rejection of all that has preceded it. For any residence, design considerations should begin with the recognition of how to live and what to be surrounded with, without being bound to traditional rules. Rich eighteenth-century silks on furniture of the same era, for example, can appear strikingly modern on an uncovered, unstained wooden floor flanked with pale-colored walls. What produces a contemporary residence lies in the editing of its contents-not in the period items with which it is filled. The American design firm Briger + Briger shows how to remain true to the spirit of the present while combining the most striking furnishings of the past with modern pieces and humble yet interesting objects from every era. What is achieved is a new refinement in living. Three handsome residences-a spacious city house, a grand country house, and a contemporary lakeside retreat-are lavishly presented in three hundred glorious images by esteemed photographer Michel Zabe. Each interior is crafted with an appealing array of antiques and fine art, modern and period furnishings, and whimsical touches. Attractive table settings for entertaining both indoors and outdoors are also presented. In addition, these welcoming residences display equally interesting and inviting outdoor spaces, from formal gardens to container plantings on small terraces. There are countless ideas for personal self-expression for any environment. Much more than a decorating guide, this beautiful volume is a design for comfortable and joyous living.

Book of Lofts

Lofts are apartments resulting from the conversion of former industrial or commercial buildings. They have their origins in the New York of the 1950s. At that time, artists and bohemians in search of cheap places to live and work began to move into abandoned late-nineteenth-century buildings that had once been warehouses, workshops or factories, thus creating a new American version of the Parisian artist's atelier. Nowadays, the tendency to convert warehouses and factories into homes has extended everywhere. Once low-cost living spaces for artists, often occupied illegally by students, they have grown into elegant, luxurious residences reserved for a wealthy elite. This book describes 55 lofts from all over the world, occupying buildings ranging from huge industrial spaces to small business premises. It is illustrated by more than 600 photographs, architectural plans and computer graphics. Издание на английском, французском и немецком языках.

Konrad P. Schöbel On the Geometry of Instanton Moduli Spaces

The study of instanton moduli spaces has led to striking results in the geometry of four-manifolds, for they constitute the groundwork for the construction of Donaldson's polynomial invariants, which are capable of distinguishing non-diffeomorphic smooth structures. This construction fails when the base manifold has a negative definite intersection form, since in this case the moduli spaces contain reducible solutions and these are usually singular points. This book is therefore concerned with the study of the geometry of instanton moduli spaces for those manifolds which have negative definite intersection form. In the first part, the topology and the Riemannian geometry near the reducible locus are described. This yields a purely topological condition for one construction of differential topological invariants. In the second part, explicit examples of instanton moduli spaces are computed for all minimal complex surfaces of class VII with second Betti number one and with respect to any Gauduchon metric. This monograph contains the author's PhD thesis, which was written at the Université de Provence Aix-Marseille I (France) under the supervision of Professor Andrei Teleman.

Marilyn Llewellyn Spirituality and Pedagogy. Being and Learning in Sacred Spaces

This book offers teachers and teacher-educators an inspiring alternative to narrowly conceived prescriptions for instruction. Through this collection of contemplative essays, the author explores the meaning of school classrooms as sacred spaces for nurturing student growth and learning. Narrative vignettes are used to illuminate pedagogical relationships grounded in faith and compassion rather than accountability and compliance. Woven throughout are themes of social justice and respect for the individual learner. The book is a excellent resource for catalyzing discussion in teacher-preparation courses and in-serivice programs. In additon to the subject of spirituality and pedagogy, the book offers an example of teacher reflection. As such, it contributes to discourses about teachers as researchers, scholar-practitioners, and pedagogically-centered inquiry.

Harry Wray Japanese and American Education. Attitudes and Practices

Under the present educational centralization Japanese secondary school teachers are severely handicapped in carrying out the goals of cultivating a spontaneous spirit and creating a culture rich in individuality. Although Japanese nursery, kindergarten, and elementary teachers could provide many hints to improve the methodology of their American counterparts, the reverse is true at the secondary and college levels. American teachers try to encourage students to be creative in approaching a problem, writing an essay, and sketching an object, and they will suggest appropriate courses, recommend books, and encourage intellectual challenge, while Japanese secondary school teachers' goal is narrowly focused on presenting designated textual material in as efficient a manner as possible. In the United States, farmers constitute less than ten percent of the population, but American schools still operate as if students had to return home each day for chores, or as if the summer vacation and fall schedule had to be used to help parents with planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops. Today, most American mothers work full time and children have much more free time and live in less secure urban environments. The amount of time spent attending school in Japan and the United States is just one of the cultural attitudes that is examined in this book.

James Baldwin Hero Tales by James Baldwin, Fiction, Classics, Literary, Fairy Tales, Folk Tales, Legends & Mythology

The author of Hero Tales is James Baldwin, a self-educated pioneer of American education, born in 1841 in Indiana. Although he never attended school himself, Baldwin founded a public high school, the first school library, and a school district in his native Indiana. During the latter part of his career, he was an editor and author of school textbooks, first for Harper & Brothers, and then for the American Book Company. So prolific was Baldwin as an author and editor, it was said that at one point in time, half of all the books in American schools were either written or edited by him. Baldwin's literary legacy may have been forgotten today in the rush to substitute multiculturalism for more traditional tales taught and enjoyed in previous years. Baldwin re-told classic heroic tales for their interest to young students -- the Song of Roland, the Iliad, and the Nibelungenlied.

Melanie Smicek American Dreams, Suburban Nightmares. Suburbia as a Narrative Space between Utopia and Dystopia in Contemporary American Cinema

The suburban landscape is inseparable from American culture. Suburbia does not only relate to the geographical concept, but also describes a cultural space incorporating people's hopes for a safe and prosperous life. Suburbia marks a dynamic ideological space constantly influenced and recreated by both the events of everyday life and artistic discourse. Fictional texts do not merely represent suburbia, but also have a decisive role in the shaping of suburban spaces. The widely held idealized image of suburbia evolved in the 1950s. Today, reality deviates from the concept of suburbs projected back then, due to e.g. high divorce rates and an increase of crime. Nevertheless, the nostalgic view of the suburbs as the "Promised Land" has survived.Postwar critics object to this perception, considering the suburbs rather as depressing landscapes of mass-consumption, conformity and alienation. This book exemplifies the dualistic representation of suburbs in contemporary American cinema by analyzing Pleasantville, The Truman Show and American Beauty. It examines how utopian concepts of suburbia are created culturally and psychologically in the films, and how the underlying anxieties of the suburban experience, visualized by the dystopian narratives, challenge this ideal.
