Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2015 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, grade: -, University of Stirling (Computing Science and Mathematics), language: English, abstract: Clinical risk assessment of chronic illnesses is a challenging and complex task which requires the utilisation of standardised clinical practice guidelines and documentation procedures in order to ensure consistent and efficient patient care. Conventional cardiovascular decision support systems have significant limitations, which include the inflexibility to deal with complex clinical processes, hard-wired rigid architectures based on branching logic and the inability to deal with legacy patient data without significant software engineering work. In light of these challenges, we are proposing a novel ontology and machine learning-driven hybrid clinical decision support framework for cardiovascular preventative care. An ontology-inspired approach provides a foundation for information collection, knowledge acquisition and decision support capabilities and aims to develop context sensitive decision support solutions based on ontology engineering principles. The proposed framework incorporates an ontology-driven clinical risk assessment and recommendation system (ODCRARS) and a Machine Learning Driven Prognostic System (MLDPS), integrated as a complete system to provide a cardiovascular preventative care solution. The proposed clinical decision support framework has been developed unde...

Traditional Information Retrieval systems users are not able to get semantic description of the information needed by them, so Intelligent Information Retrieval (IIR) systems are used to find out the more relevant information. Semantic web represents a technique for getting semantic information from the particular domain ontology. It involves retrieving of the data semantically through domain ontology's based on user queries. Semantic web based Searching mechanisms which will perform search on the reformed query and display the list of matched documents. In past, various ontology merging algorithms had been anticipated based on the concept of removing overlaps. Here, a new approach of ontology merging is proposed based on the semantic analysis that deals with same domain specific ontology's. Proposed algorithm is fully automated merging algorithm that uses the class semantics, property semantics using Wordnet. The need of ontology merging that will help to maintain ontology's and the interaction with these ontology's will increase.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Pedagogy - Media Pedagogy, grade: K-12, University of Cape Coast (Centre for Continuing Education), course: Information Technology in Social Studies, language: English, abstract: ABSTRACTTechnology has become an imperative tool in teaching and learning, offering a constructive dimension to education. Its usage cuts across all disciplines and social studies is not an exception. In view of this, using a descriptive research design, this study investigated social studies teachers' perception of technology integration, their use of technology as well as the impact of technology integration training on their instructional practice in the senior high schools of the Cape Coast Metropolis. Data were collected through the use of a questionnaire from a purposive sample of 50 social studies teachers who have completed some form of technology integration training whether formal or informal.Participants ranged in age from 21 to 60, and had an average of 11 years of teaching experience. Social studies teachers in this study generally had a positive perception towards technology integration and the unparallel importance it brings to bare in the social studies classroom. However, they did not have the requisite competencies that will cushion their desire to tailor their instruction around technology, even though they have had some form of integration training. Since they lacked the requisite expertise in technology integration, they h...

The development of ontologies which aims at capturing knowledge as a formal structural framework, is an important foundation for a wide range of applications. Since ontology development is usually a collaborative activity which may span a long period of time, it is critical to provide developers with a suitable development environment that supports collaboration in a flexible manner and that facilitates the building of robust and accurate ontologies. In this dissertation, the author focusses his effort on providing an easy-to-use collaborative ontology development environment that supports both synchronous and asynchronous collaborative activities. Two prototype systems were developed to reach the goal based on an extensive requirement study. The first prototype system servers numerous functions in supporting synchronized cooperation. A Java based application provides developers with several functions. For example, with the help of group-awareness and a locking mechanism, involved developers become aware of actions from other users, which enables them to work without conflict in terms of editing the same ontology resources.Based on the experiences gathered from implementing the first prototype system, the requirement of supporting asynchronous cooperation was studied. A version control system especially in the fields of coping with ontology data structure is a central component to satisfy the requirement. This second approach primarily supports local workspaces that can be syn...

A perennial discussion about teacher development is the optimal content background for teachers. Inrecent years, that discussion has taken center stage in the work of mathematics education researchers, mathematicians, mathematics professional developers, and mathematics education policymakers. Muchof the existing and prior work in this area has been directed toward mathematical knowledge forteaching at the elementary level. The work described in this volume takes a sometimes-neglectedapproach, focusing on the dynamic nature of mathematical understanding rather than on a stabledescription of mathematical knowledge, and on mathematics for secondary teaching rather thanmathematics for teaching at the elementary level. The work reported in Mathematical Understanding for Secondary Teaching: A Framework and Classroom-Based Situations is a practice-basedresponse to the question of what mathematical understandings secondary teachers could productively use in their teaching. For each of more than 50events, our team of almost 50 mathematics educators who were experienced mathematics teachers developed descriptions of the mathematics thatteachers could use-each of those descriptions (consisting of the event and the mathematics related to the event) is what we call a Situation. Wedeveloped our Framework for Mathematical Understanding for Secondary Teaching (MUST) based on an analysis of our entire set of Situations. Wecall the work practice-based because the MUST framework is based on actu...

The P4 Framework is a holistic framework for teacher technology use that discusses the use of technology to enhance instructional practices, teachers' professional development, and general workplace productivity. This framework shows the members of the teacher education field how to use technology not just for pedagogical practices, but also for the practical aspects of teaching. Conversely, it also illustrates the limits of the “tools-only” emphasis that is often promoted through technology conferences and social media. This framework addresses complex issues regarding technology in education: teacher buy-in, balancing teacher and student needs, developing a professional development program that analyzes learners, the community, and teachers. The book is both an easy-to-read guide and a call-to-arms. It encourages school personnel to set benchmarks and track performance changes based on technology initiatives in order to prove to stakeholders that technology is indeed making a difference.

This book addresses the field of geographic information extraction and retrieval from textual documents. Geographic information retrieval is a rapidly emerging subject, a trend fostered by the growing power of the Internet and the emerging possibilities of data dissemination. After positioning his work in this field in Chapter 1, the author makes proposals in the following two chapters. Chapter 2 focuses on spatial and temporal information indexing and retrieval in corpora of textual documents. Propositions for both spatial and temporal information retrieval (IR) are made. Chapter 3 tackles the use of generalized spatial and temporal indexes, which are produced from there in the framework of multi-criteria IR. Geographic IR (GIR) is discussed at length, since this IR combines the criteria of spatial, temporal and thematic research. The author provides a rich bibliographical study of the current approaches focused on the modeling and retrieval of spatial and temporal information in textual documents, and similarity measures developed thus far in the literature. The book concludes with a broad perspective of the remaining scientific challenges. Several areas of research are discussed, such as integration of a domain-based ontology, modeling of spatial footprints from the interpretation of spatial relation, and parsing of relations between features deemed relevant within a document resulting from a GIR process. Contents Foreword, Christophe Claramunt. 1. Access by Geographic Content to Textual Corpora: What Orientations ? 2. Spatial and Temporal Information Retrieval in Textual Corpora. 3. The scope of the book is an integrated discussion of several aspects of the internationalisationprocess in secondary education in Europe. The European and International Orientation (EIO) ineducation is dealt with from different national angles and theoretical visions, supported byrecently conducted empirical studies in several countries. The book describes national policiesconcerning EIO, the way in which schools implement these policies and the success anddifficulties of the activities that they undertake. A connection is made with ideas of citizenshipin a European perspective and the question comes up for discussion if there can be spoken ofcommon European values. Important issues are explored like the tension between nationalidentity and European communality as well as the risk of EIO in increasing the gap between lower and higher educated students. The mission of the book is to not only provide background information to all who are interested in or involved in internationalisation ofeducation, social integration and European citizenship, but to provide recommendations for future practice as well. A central focus inthese recommendations is the 'Common Framework for Europe Competence' (CFEC), the first model that offers the possibility tostructurally shape the knowledge and skills concerning the European and international developments in the school. Integration of processes and supporting IT tools is a key factor for successful Facility Management. After a review of the present situation of Facility Management the author describes an „integrated" process model for the conception, planning and construction processes of facilities, providing integration into the whole life cycle. The target costing method is presented as a means to grant proper conception, planning and construction in accordance with the needs of the investor, the user and the operator. To be able to provide figures for the target costing methodology, a concept for efficient IT process support during the utilisation phase is developed. This includes two levels: the operative level and the controlling level based on the data of the operative processes. The concept is based on standard reference models of the key FM processes of the utilisation phase and on an analysis of the existing functionality of the relevant IT tools.A concept for the integration of existing IT tools is presented, that provides the necessary interaction and data exchange to support the newly introduced parts of the workflow. Based on this integration unified objects are defined, combining the distributed information of the FM business objects. This results in a joint FM database structure. The support of the operative processes and the joint data structure enable standardised calculation of benchmarks for controlling purposes. Finally, these benchmarks are the basis for a statistical...

Over the past three decades, the standards-based reform movement has transformed K-12 education in theUnited States, culminating with passage of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2002. Beyond makingreasonable accommodations for special needs students, standards-based education pays little attention toother areas of student difference, relying instead on a "rational actor" model of student experience, andignoring how differences in students' backgrounds and orientations impact their particular experiences ofschooling. This book examines the development of standards-based education, with particular scrutiny of the roles ofthe National Governors' Association and its National Education Summit events. Examination of importantdocuments emerging from those events provides an illustration of the conceptually impoverishedunderstanding of student subjectivity, motivation, and agency inherent in standards-based education. In order to understand both problems with andalternatives to standards-based education, the author examines the roles of ideology, rhetoric, and audience in school policy. In three case studies, the author analyzes several non-school models of education, including Marine Corps bootcamp, Ving Tsun kung fu training, andan online, school resistance community. Johnson argues that examination of these learning contexts provides a better understanding of theshortcomings and dangers of the standards-based model of student subjectivity, and suggests a set of fourte...

What is the role of mobile devices in education? Mobile phone ownership has proliferated at an explosive rate over the last decade. The entrenchment of this technology in everyday life necessitates a critical examination of the roles it can play in education. A varied cross-section of case studies in mobile education was selected and analyzed with the primary aim of providing a critical landscape of mobile education and the secondary aim of extrapolating frameworks from usage patterns. Exemplar case studies were reviewed for insight into mobile education and synthesized into a framework using meta-ethnography. The framework consists of three usage categories: Accessing Learning, Enhancing Learning, and Managing Learning.

A volume in Transforming Education for the FutureSpirituality and spiritual experiences have been the bedrock of every civilization and together form one of the highest mechanisms for making sense of the world for billions of people. Current research paradigms, due to their limitation to empirical, sensory, psychologically, or culturally constructed realities, fail to provide a framework for exploring this essential area of human experience. The development of a spiritual research paradigm will provide researchers from the social sciences and education the tools and abilities to systematically explore fundamental questions regarding human spiritual experiences and spiritual growth.A spiritual research paradigm requires an ontology that considers all reality to be multidimensional, interconnected, and interdependent. It requires an epistemology that integrates knowing from outer sources as well as inner contemplation, acknowledging our integration of soul and spirit with the body and mind. Three additional aspects are useful to a spiritual research paradigm: axiology, methodology, and teleology. An axiology concerns what is valued, good, and ethical. A methodology is the appropriate approach to systematic inquiry. A fifth and less frequently mentioned aspect is teleology, an explanation of the goal or end (telos) to which new knowledge is applied, such as gaining wisdom and truth, touching the divine, increasing inner peace, exploring hidden dimensions, or improving society. Decoding the Disciplines, a program designed to help instructors increase learning in their courses, provides a framework for identifying and remedying course elements that are most problematic for students. Decoding is a seven-step process in which instructors: 1. identify a bottleneck of learning, 2. make explicit the mental operations required to overcome the obstacle, 3. model the required steps for students, 4. give them practice at these skills, 5. deal with emotional bottlenecks that interfere with learning, 6. assess the success of their efforts, and 7. share the results. Providing detailed information so that readers may develop effective models of practice, this volume provides examples and evidence of the ways the framework has been applied across disciplines and used to inform teaching, curriculum, and pedagogical research initiatives. It outlines how various communities of practice got started, describes the analyses of three different collections of Decoding interviews, extends the Decoding framework using different theoretical lenses, and connects the learning to practical applications for teachers and scholars in higher education. This is the 150th volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education series. It offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

Software tries to solve complex problems of the real world. In addition, customers' expectations concerning the quality of the software are rising steadily. Therefore, testing the software before it is delivered to a customer is a necessity. While testing software completely is impossible, the test department must use techniques in order to test critical parts in the software first. Furthermore, the test department has to provide best possible information about the quality of the software achieved through passing several tests. This requirement can be met only if testing is a structured and monitored process. This thesis presents the implementation of an approach which understandsstructured software testing as an integrated part of the software development life-cycle. The approach is based on several established models from software development, quality assurance, and software testing. These models are discussed together with different commercial, in-house, and Open Source tools used for the implementation of the approach. A framework is described for automated test execution, test results processing, archiving of test data, and web based test data management. The theory presented stems from the view of marketing as a value-creation process that is central to any business enterprise. In addition to theory, this book offers a set of practical tools that enable managers to apply the knowledge contained in the generalized frameworks to specific business problems and market opportunities. The information contained in this volume is organized into five major parts. The first part defines the essence of marketing as a business discipline and outlines an overarching framework for marketing management that serves as the organizing principle for the information presented in the rest of the book. We discuss the role of marketing management as a value-creation process, the essentials of marketing strategy and tactics as the key components of a company’s business model, and the process of developing an actionable marketing plan. Part Two covers issues pertaining to the development of a marketing strategy that will guide the company’s tactical activities. Here we focus on three fundamental aspects of a company’s marketing strategy: the identification of target customers, the development of a customer value proposition, and the development of a value proposition for the company and its collaborators. Part Three focuses on...

The major focus in education for the masses needs to be done on the teacher and the taught. Merger and acquisition activities have become an integral part of today's business world. They are considered as strategic component to gain market shares and extend product portfolios. Still, these transactions have a huge impact on an organization. This paper looks specifically at the M&A impact on company culture. Based on an analysis of identified key elements, which drive a M&A process, a cultural integration toolkit will be developed to solve identified cultural problems. Secondary data serves as source data for an inductive approach. Cultural problems and key drivers will be identified based on systematic research. The implantation of these key drivers in existing integration models will be further studied. Findings prove that not all of the identified key drivers are implemented in the models. Therefore, existing models solve the identified cultural problems semi-efficient. This leaves the need for a basic integration tool, which implements all key drivers, serves as guideline through an M&A process and provides specific instruments for realization of single steps. This paper develops such a basic integration toolkit in chapter five. The toolkit meets all these requirements and proves that 'managing culture clashes in M&A's' is possible.

A service excellence framework is developed and the design for a new service excellence award is proposed. The proposed framework is based on the Industrial Excellence Award. In addition to the original four fundamental processes a fifth component is introduced: the customer. To complete the framework, the seven components of management quality known from the IEA are adopted. This framework is the structure for the self-assessment questionnaire that will be the core of the new „Best Retailer” service excellence award. Through an extensive literature review, success factors and empirically tested items for questionnaires were identified and assigned to the corresponding sections in the questionnaire. The result is a collection of questions that - if appropriately considered by management – can help introducing service excellence in the retailing industry. The modus operandi of a possible future award competition is suggested to stay close the example of the IEA in order to leverage the existing brand. This should help to popularize the new award, to create outstanding showcases quickly, and to disseminate excellent management quality in the industry. Provides an important framework for data analysts in assessing the quality of data and its potential to provide meaningful insights through analysis Analytics and statistical analysis have become pervasive topics, mainly due to the growing availability of data and analytic tools. Technology, however, fails to deliver insights with added value if the quality of the information it generates is not assured. Information Quality (InfoQ) is a tool developed by the authors to assess the potential of a dataset to achieve a goal of interest, using data analysis. Whether the information quality of a dataset is sufficient is of practical importance at many stages of the data analytics journey, from the pre-data collection stage to the post-data collection and post-analysis stages. It is also critical to various stakeholders: data collection agencies, analysts, data scientists, and management. This book: Explains how to integrate the notions of goal, data, analysis and utility that are the main building blocks of data analysis within any domain. Presents a framework for integrating domain knowledge with data analysis. Provides a combination of both methodological and practical aspects of data analysis. Discusses issues surrounding the implementation and integration of InfoQ in both academic programmes and business / industrial projects. This book is an invaluable, instructional field manual for you or any professional who needs to obtain and interpret information gathered directly by and from people, without recourse to a technological intermediary, such as online search. In the role of interviewer, interrogator, or evaluator, there are many opportunities to get it wrong. As advanced as our information-gathering technology may be, it is still impossible to get inside the head of an interviewee by conducting a Google search; so hit them with the tactics spelled out in this book instead in order to protect yourself from being sent in the wrong direction. Inside, you'll learn practical information regarding all aspects of obtaining and evaluating information. This book serves as a tool-kit that helps build the skills necessary for conducting good interviews and extracting information that is critical for the enterprise in which the interviewer is engaged. As you progress through the book, you will acquire an understanding of research-based behavioral techniques that bolster the success rate of interviews. In addition, the legal factors you need to be aware of prior to conducting an interview for hiring purposes are spelled out. Finally, you'll acquire the skills necessary to help you evaluate interview information so that decisions made are based on evidence.

The Evidence-Based Nursing Series is co-published with Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). The series focuses on implementing evidence-based practice in nursing and mirrors the remit of Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing, encompassing clinical practice, administration, research and public policy. Models and Frameworks for Implementing Evidence- Based Practice: Linking Evidence to Action looks at ways of implementing evidence gained through research and factors that influence successful implementation. It acknowledges the gap that exists between obtaining evidence and the practicalities of putting it into practice and provides direction to help to close this gap. This, the first book in the series, helps the reader to make decisions about the appropriateness of using various models and frameworks. A selection of models and frameworks are examined in detail including examples of their use in practice. The book concludes with an analysis and synthesis of the included models and frameworks. The models and frameworks that have been included are based on a number of criteria: that they are internationally recognised, have undergone widespread evaluation and testing, are transferable across different settings, and can be used by different disciplines. Models and frameworks include: Stetler Model Ottowa Model of Research Use IOWA model of evidence-based practice Advancing Research and Clinical Practice through Close Collaboration (ARCC) model Dobbins’ dissemination and use of research evidence for policy and practice framework Joanna Briggs Institute model Knowledge to Action framework Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (PARIHS) Key Points: Includes an overview of implementation issues and the use of theory and frameworks in implementing evidence into practice Chapters are written by the developers of the model or framework Each chapter provides background on an implementation model or framework, suitable applications, underlying theory and examples of use Each chapter examines strengths and weaknesses of each model alongside barriers and facilitators for its implementation
