The aim of this book is to present the modern design principles and analysis of lens antennas. It gives graduates and RF/Microwave professionals the design insights in order to make full use of lens antennas. Why do we want to write a book in lens antennas? Because this topic has not been thoroughly publicized, its importance is underestimated. As antennas play a key role in communication systems, recent development in wireless communications would indeed benefit from the characteristics of lens antennas: low profile, and low cost etc. The major advantages of lens antennas are narrow beamwidth, high gain, low sidelobes and low noise temperature. Their structures can be more compact and weigh less than horn antennas and parabolic antennas. Lens antennas with their quasi-optical characteristics, also have low loss, particularly at near millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths where they have particular advantages. This book systematically conducts advanced and up-to-date treatment of lens antennas.

This practical book covers a wide range of antenna array topics that are becoming increasingly important in wireless applications, with emphasis on array design, applications, and computer modeling. Each chapter in Antenna Arrays builds upon the previous chapter, progressively addressing more difficult material. Beginning with basic electromagnetics/antennas/antenna systems information, the book then deals with the analysis and synthesis of arrays of point sources and their associated array factors. It presents a sampling of different antenna elements that replace these point sources, then presents element configurations that do not have to lie along a line or in a plane. The complex and difficult-to-predict interactions of elements and electromagnetic waves are introduced, along with computer modeling and experiments that are necessary for predicting the performance of arrays where mutual coupling is important. Then, various approaches to getting signals to and from the array elements to a computer where the signal detection takes place are explored, as are the numerical techniques behind smart antennas. The book emphasizes the computational methods used in the design and analysis of array antennas. Also featured are signal processing and numerical modeling algorithms, as well as pictures of antenna arrays and components provided by industry and government sources, with explanations of how they operate. Recently, there has been increasing interest in pushing the operating frequency of RFID systems toward microwave frequencies (5.8 GHz) to make use of the ISM band. This work addresses the design of miniaturized fractal antennas for this application. Different fractal antennas based on aperture-coupled feeding technique are studied, analyzed and compared for size reduction, low profile, and good omnidirctional patterns. Further, a new design methodology for miniaturizing fractal RFID antennas is introduced which uses particle swarm optimization technique, implemented in MATLAB, and CST Microwave Studio which is an electromagnetic simulator based on finite integration technique. The design methodology is applied to different fractal antennas such as Minkowski slot , Koch slot, and Minkowski aperture-coupled antennas. The methodology is also used to design a miniaturized fractal antenna having approximately perfect impedance matching with the tag chip. The design does not need any additional loading or matching network and hence yields relatively lower cost and smaller antenna area compared with conventional tag antenna systems.

Design and Analysis of Composite Structures enables graduate students and engineers to generate meaningful and robust designs of complex composite structures. Combining analysis and design methods for structural components, the book begins with simple topics such as skins and stiffeners and progresses through to entire components of fuselages and wings. Starting with basic mathematical derivation followed by simplifications used in real-world design, Design and Analysis of Composite Structures presents the level of accuracy and range of applicability of each method. Examples taken from actual applications are worked out in detail to show how the concepts are applied, solving the same design problem with different methods based on different drivers (e.g. cost or weight) to show how the final configuration changes as the requirements and approach change. Provides a toolkit of analysis and design methods to most situations encountered in practice, as well as analytical frameworks and the means to solving them for tackling less frequent problems. Presents solutions applicable to optimization schemes without having to run finite element models at each iteration, speeding up the design process and allowing examination of several more alternatives than traditional approaches. Includes guidelines showing how decisions based on manufacturing considerations affect weight and how weight optimization may adversely affect the cost. Accompanied by a website at www.wiley.com/go/kassapoglou hosting lecture slides and solutions to the exercises for instructors.

This book is intended as an advanced text for courses in antennas, with a focus on the mature but vital background field of aperture antennas. The book is aimed at final year, MSc, PhD and Post-Doctoral students, as well as readers who are moving from academia into industry, beginning careers as wireless engineers, system designers, in R&D, or for practising engineers. It assumes the reader has undertaken an earlier course of study on Maxwell's equations, fields and waves. Some of these topics are summarised in the early few chapters in order to provide continuity and background for the remaining chapters. The aperture antennas covered include the main types of horns, reflectors and arrays as well as microstrip patches, reflectarrays and lenses. To provide more than a superficial treatment of arrays, the topic of mutual coupling is covered in greater detail than most similar books in the area. Also included is an introduction to arrays on non-planar surfaces, which is of importance for applications that involve curved surfaces such as in aerodynamics or for making aperture antennas unobtrusive. A chapter is included on some modern aperture antennas to illustrate design techniques beyond the most common types of aperture antennas described in the early chapters. This is to show where advances have recently been made and where they could be improved in the future. Also included are selected topics of a practical nature for aperture antennas, namely fabrication and measurement.

The pressure vessel design methods can be divided into two basic categories regardless of which code or standard they are inherent from, namely the Design by Rule and the Design by Analysis. When doing Design by Rule, the overall dimensions and loads are specified and wall thickness is calculated by predefined procedures, formulas and charts. When doing Design by Analysis, the vessel geometry and overall dimensions are defined, and allowable loads are evaluated through detailed structural analysis. Problems might arise when the various methods produces different answers to identical design problems. When conducting design procedures a component could be designed by the following methods: By rule, By classical interaction analysis, With an elastic FEA using a shell model, With an elastic FEA using a solid model and linearization procedures, By FEA limit analysis or By FEA plastic analysis. Most designers might feel that the methods are presented in an order of increasing sophistication, indicating that they will reveal an increasing amount of information about the true structural behavior. One would therefore expect the more traditional methods to give conservative result

Microstrip patch antennas became very popular in mobile and radio wireless communication. This is because of ease of analysis and fabrication, and their attractive radiation characteristics. However, they have some drawbacks of low efficiency, narrow bandwidth and surface wave losses. In order to overcome the limitations of microstrip antennas such as narrow bandwidth (< 5%), lower gain (-6 dB), excitation of surface waves etc, a new solution method, using electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) materials, as substrates has attracted increasing attention. Unlike other methods, this new method utilizes the inherent properties of dielectric materials to enhance microstrip antenna performance. The aim of this book is to design and simulate the new EBG structure operating at 2.96GHz frequency and study the performance of the rectangular microstrip antenna with 2-D planar EBG structure and 2-D planar EBG structure where the substrate is made of by joining two different dielectric materials and effect of gap width of 2-D EBG structure. The existing and emerging next generation of wireless communication standards assume that the end-users use omni-directional antennas, radiating in all directions. This has been a barrier to network capacity and efficiency. Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) is considered as a key smart-antenna technology, to improve the capacity of a communication channel at a greater extent as compared to single input single output (SISO) and single input multiple output (SIMO) techniques. MIMO is a technology which uses multiple antennas both at transmitter and receiver ends to increase the overall data transmission rate and provide higher spectral efficiency. The MIMO antennas have been an area of extensive research all over the world during recent years because of their ability to increase the system capacity without increasing the channel bandwidth. The LTE based mobile devices recommend the use of small-scale and multi-band MIMO antennas. The primary aim of this book is to design, simulate and characterize a dual-band antenna array for LTE and MIMO applications. The antennas cover two 4G LTE frequency bands of 2.1GHz (LTE Band-1) and 3.5GHz (LTE Band-22).
