A volume in Education Policy in Practice: Critical Cultural StudiesSeries Editors Bradley A. U. Levinson, and Margaret Sutton, Indiana UniversityHopes in Friction offers a vivid portrait of life and the implementation of Universal Primary Education in Eastern Uganda, based on longtermfieldwork following a group of children as they grow up. The book considers how the actions and hopes of these children and families, to attainwhat they perceive as 'a good life', are crosscut by political aspirations and projects of schooling and health education. When hopes are in frictioninspiration as well as disappointment occur.Policy makers in Uganda and in international organisations expect health improvements as one of the bonuses of education programs.Families in Eastern Uganda also hope for and experience health - in the local sense of a good life - as part of schooling. Lotte Meinert explores thetaken for granted effect of schooling on health and focuses a careful eye on how boys and girls appropriate and negotiate ideas and moralities abouthealth in the context of what is possible ethically, materially and experientially.Endorsement: Hope in Friction gives us first-hand insight into the aspirations and ideals of Ugandan schoolchildren. The impact of international migration, both South-South as well as South-North, on the economic, social and political life of the people in Eastern and Southern Africa [was] not well documented and studied,- and 'the evidence-base for policy on migration and development [was] very weak.' With this in mind, OSSREA's invitation to conduct a study on international migration in Africa had the following objectives: To analyze the nature and type of South-South migration, focusing on issues, such as brain gain and/or brain drain, remittance flows, technical know-how transfers, violations of the right of African migrants and gender dimensions of migration; To investigate the dynamics of migration from Eastern and Southern Africa to the Arab Gulf States as well as to developed countries, focusing on the skills of migrants, brain gain and/or drain, remittance flows, technical know-how transfers, violations of the rights of African migrants and gender dimension of migrants; and to assess the successes, impediments and challenges of African international migrants from Eastern and Southern Africa and to formulate policy recommendations to maximize the gains and minimize the costs associated with international migration in Africa.

Trypanosomosis, a haemoprotozoan disease, causes a serious condition in variety of domestic and wild animals known as 'surra'. Trypanosoma evansi which is a vector transmitted most pathogenic trypanosome affecting wide range of host which is globally distributed. Animal trypanosomosis presents special problems with regard to its definitive diagnosis. Though trypanosomes have been studied more than a hundred years, there is still a dearth in accurate diagnostic tests with high sensitivity and specificity. The conventional diagnostic methods are no longer sensitive missing more than 80% of the infection. This book, therefore, provides a new horizon in the field of advanced diagnosis to detect trypanosomosis which is rapid, cost effective and field adaptable. The contents of book include a brief introduction along with an elaborate review of the research carried out till date regarding the diagnosis of trypanosomosis with special emphasis on development and usage of latex agglutination test,a pen side test. The analysis should help shed some light on newer diagnostic techniques which are especially useful to Veterinary and Medical professionals, research scholars, scientists& students

The right to adequate food (RtF)is a human right of all people that emphasises freedom from hunger and malnutrition. It is internationally recognised by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural rights; both of which Uganda has ratified. This book assesses the RtF situation of slum dwellers of Banda Parish (one of the slums of Kampala City,Uganda)and shows that whereas Uganda is bound by international obligations on the RtF,slum dwellers are yet to realize this right. This is occuring against the background that the RtF is "fairly" protected by objectives XIV and XXII under the social and economic objectives of the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. The assessment is based on agreed upon RtF indicators as reported in the project "Measurement Developments in the Realization of the Right to Food by Means of Indicators: The IBSA - Procedure". This book is generally intended for policy makers, civil society organizations, UN agencies, other humanitarian agencies, academicians and all individuals involved in advocating for the human right to adequate food.

How can the performing arts add value to peacebuilding programs? Is it possible to use participatory theatre to reconnect and reconcile enemies? What is the trauma-healing effect for those acting in a theatre troupe?Claus Schrowange has explored these questions and the opportunities of using forum theatre in peace work in Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, and DR Congo. His conclusion is that forum theatre is more than mere entertainment. It is an aesthetic tool for social change. But the value of theatre is not generated automatically, the way it is done matters. If it is done in a participatory manner with an authentic, be¬lie¬vable acting style, involving both the audience and stage actor in a vivid and touching experience, the impact is immediately felt. This book presents the approach Schrowange developed together with a team of African theatre practitioners in a variety of circumstances and environments. It is illustrated with case studies taken from the author's direct experience of using the approach he describes in Eastern DR Congo and Rwanda.

In eastern Uganda, soils have been characterised as limited in Nitrogen. Soil management technologies were therefore incorporated into farming systems in Tororo district, eastern Uganda. The objectives were to determine: the optimal combinations of legume cover crops or biomass transfer species and inorganic fertilizers for replenishing fertility; the acceptance levels and the farmer perceptions of 8 shrub- and tree species. Partial budgeting, linear programming analysis and descriptive statistics were used as analytical tools. 100% Mucuna pruriens incorporation and 0.9 t ha-1 Tithonia diversifolia incorporation with an inorganic nitrogen application at the rate of 30 kilograms hectare-1 were found to be the optimal soil management options on 0.045 and 0.872 hectares of land respectively, with investment costs of 495,120 Uganda Shillings. The major problematic aspects were technology accessibility and labour constraints. The strengthening of advisory services, government facilitated input delivery through private sector supply would play a critical role in soil fertility replenishment in Uganda.

'Development and Semi-periphery' presents a collection of articles that focus on comparative analysis of development trajectories in the semi-peripheral countries of South America and Central Eastern Europe. As opposed to the transitology studies that were prevalent in the 1990s, and that treated the neoliberal context in these two regions separately, the articles in this book instead offer a new comparative analysis focusing on the consequences of neoliberal reforms and the new actors that deal with their results. The essays discuss the various forms of state that have unfolded in different peripheral countries, their role in the social engineering of economic models and social policies, and the impact of state capacities and ideas on institutional innovation. The volume also compares transformations in political culture, collective identities and contentious politics in both areas.

The limited local and international demand stature of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) in Uganda can be attributed to a poor marketing and distribution system. This, in part, can be attributed to limited consumption, processing and storage options for the crop. The majority of the sweet potato farmers in the country are subsistent; they consume most of their output on-farm with the excess being sold. Any successful intervention measure to promote sweet potato utilisation must involve the farmers since they are a major determinant of the quality and quantity of the final output. However, before any concise remedies can be proposed and concrete action taken in a bid to improve the current state of sweet potato utilisation in the country, a lot more needs to be known about the crop, more so its utilisation. Examining the current sweet potato tuber utilisation options available to the producers can be a good starting point. This study aims at examining the various tuber utilisation options available to sweet potato producers in eastern Uganda. It addresses utilisation in the context of output storage, processing, marketing and consumption.

Newcastle disease virus continues to be a threat to the poultry industry worldwide. The disease has become more pronounced in resource constrained households that rely on backyard poultry system as a source of income and animal protein particularly in under developed countries including Uganda. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of Newcastle disease virus in apparently healthy birds, identify the Newcastle disease virus pathotypes and genotypes circulating in Uganda and to compare the regional distribution of these strains in live bird markets in Uganda. Six hundred fifty (each of cloacal and oropharyngeal swabs) samples were collected from live bird markets in all the regions of Uganda. The samples were processed and inoculated in 10-day old embryonated chicken eggs and incubated for 72 hours. Allantoic fluid was harvested and tested for the presence of Newcastle disease virus using hemagglutination and hemagglutination inhibition tests.

Uganda like many low income countries still struggles to provide health care for a significant proportion of the population despite enacting several policies and embarking on different economic reforms. A large number of people are facing catastrophic expenditures as they seek good and better health leading them into dire poverty. There is dis-proportionality between the country's burden of disease and the finances available to take care of it. Analyzing Uganda's health financing policies and system is a necessary initial step for improving its situation; it identifies the policy and practice gaps, which is necessary in making an optimum and relevant choice of reforms. This book initially contextualizes health financing in low income countries and then looks at the status of the health system in Uganda. These two chapters form a basis for the analysis of the health financing system of Uganda that follows thereafter. It concludes by drawing some lessons and recommendations for Uganda.

Data were collected using semi-structured questionnaire, focus group discussion, observation guides and review of secondary data. The study showed that there was reduction in the availability of labour for grazing and watering livestock in both Moyo and Kashumba; There was shift in decision-making and implementation from ailing household heads to selected household members. There was significant negative changes in livestock grazing and sale of livestock products in households affected by HIV/AIDS compared to those non affected. Furthermore, there was reduction in grazing and watering time for livestock activities. It was observed that daily animal source foods reduced in the affected households. The study recommended that HIV/AIDS mitigation measures be intergrated in the livestock sector plans that will create HIV/AIDS competent communities in Uganda.

Humor in Middle Eastern Cinema

While Middle Eastern culture does not tend to be associated with laughter and levity in the global imagination, humor—often satirical—has long been a staple of mainstream Arabic film. In Humor in Middle Eastern Cinema, editors Gayatri Devi and Najat Rahman shed light on this tradition, as well as humor and laughter motivated by other intent—including parody, irony, the absurd, burlesque, and dark comedy. Contributors trace the proliferation of humor in contemporary Middle Eastern cinema in the works of individual directors and from the perspectives of genre, national cinemas, and diasporic cinema. Humor in Middle Eastern Cinema explores what humor theorists have identified as an “emancipatory,” “liberatory,” even “revolutionary” function to humor. Among the questions contributors ask are: How does Middle Eastern cinema and media highlight the stakes and place of humor in art and in life? What is its relation to the political? Can humor in cinematic art be emancipatory? What are its limits for its intervention or transformation? Contributors examine the region’s masterful auteurs, such as Abbas Kiarostami, Youssef Chahine, and Elia Suleiman and cover a range of cinematic settings, including Egypt, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, and Turkey. They also trace diasporic issues in the distinctive cinema of India and Pakistan. This insightful collection will introduce readers to a variety of contemporary Middle Eastern cinema that has attracted little critical noti...

The Swiss ophthalmologist Erika Sutter was born in Basel in 1917. She spent 32 years working in Elim Hospital, founded by the Swiss Mission in an impoverished rural area in North-Eastern South Africa. Together with her African colleague and friend, Selina Maphorogo, she founded the Care Groups, village self-help groups working for better health in their communities. The movement is still active after more than 30 years, and now has around 2,000 members, mostly women, in over 200 villages. Erika Sutter has received numerous international honours and awards for her pioneering work, including the award 'Woman of the Year' in 1984 from the South African newspaper 'The Star', and an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel. For the creation of this biography, Erika Sutter spent many hours with the author, her friend Gertrud Stiehle, telling the story of her long life ñ vividly, with a sharp eye for social issues, a hint of self-irony, and dry wit. Her account does not ignore events in the wider world. She experienced life on the Swiss-German border during the Second World War, and her years of working in South Africa were those when the apartheid policies of the South African Government were becoming more and more repressive, affecting many aspects of life in the country.

Traditional Western religion explains that each human has a spiritual aspect called a soul. However, several passages in the Bible allude to humans having a soul and a spirit. Dan has explored this idea and found numerous modern psychological findings that support this notion. Shamanism and some Eastern religious concepts also support this idea. Diverse concepts such as creativity and mental illness can be explained by the idea that two spiritual forms are in each human.

The specific focus of this book is to examine whether the sales of human kidneys could be regarded as constitutionally acceptable in South Africa. This book focuses on the obligations that the state has in terms of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa as well as the basic human rights each individual has and how the government must protect these rights in a transplant context. These obligations are analysed in terms of the right to life, the right to human dignity, the right to self- determination, the right to privacy, as well as the right of access to healthcare services. These rights are evaluated against the proposal of buying and selling kidneys. In addition to being constitutionally acceptable, the selling of kidneys must be bioethically justifiable as well. Therefore, kidney sales are also tested against the four pillars of bio-ethics: respect for patient autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice. In this book there is also a focus on the arguments for and against the selling of kidneys. Furthermore, a comparative study is conducted of the legislation pertaining to organ transplants in South Africa with other countries such as Singapore and Iran.

Over the last two decades, Eastern Europe has experienced extensive changes in geo-political relocations and relations leading to everyday uncertainty. Attempts to establish liberal democracies, re-orientations from planned to market economics, and a desire to create 'new states' and internationally minded 'new citizens' has left some in poverty, unemployment and social insecurity, leading them to rely on normative coping and semi-autonomous strategies for security and social guarantees. This anthology explores how grey zones of governance, borders, relations and invisibilities affect contemporary Eastern Europe.
