Joan Fallon Daughters of Spain

Daughters of Spain gives a gripping account of the hard won changes within society for the women of Spain, through the eyes and experiences of the women themselves. I first began to think about writing this book in the late 1980s, when I lived in Spain for a brief period. I was impressed by the way the Spanish women I met had embraced the freedom of modern life in the short period since the death of Spain's dictator General Franco, in 1975. However I did nothing about it. The years went by and I began to realise that if I didn't make a start soon, most of the women I wanted to interview would be dead. So in 2007 I began to interview as many women as I could; I began with friends, then they introduced me to their mothers, aunts, neighbours and so it grew. I also read all that I could lay my hands on about the Spanish Civil war and the Franco era. The women I interviewed were from all walks of life and spanned a wide range of ages. Because the interviews covered a period of immense social change in Spain's recent history, I decided to link them together with short commentaries on topics such as divorce, abortion, contraception, domestic abuse and education, thus putting them into context. The result is a mosaic of their lives, a vivid and unique picture of what life was really like for women in Spain over the past seventy years, of the hardships they endured and their aspirations for a more egalitarian future.

Pierce Taylor Hibbs Finding God in the Ordinary

We tend to look for God in the grand and spectacular, but most of our lives are filled with ordinary moments and routines: drinking coffee, reading a book, driving to work. Can we find God in the banalities of everyday life? In Finding God in the Ordinary, the author shows that we can, and that we must. Our world is not an ordinary world. Because it was spoken into being and maintained by the word of God's power (Heb 1:3), everything around us is always revealing the nature and character of the triune God. Our world is extraordinarily ordinary, always calling our attention to the God of glory and his work in the commonplace.""I loved this short book by Pierce Taylor Hibbs on finding God in the ordinary. It is Scriptural, wise, and beautifully written. Reformed theologians are not supposed to write natural theologies, but the Bible itself says that God is clearly revealed in the creation, and that means not only in the big things like the skies and the mountains, but also in small things, like my morning cup of coffee. This book will help you to see God everywhere, for that is where he is.""--John M. Frame, author of Nature's Case for God""This book is a tremendous stimulus to seeing the world as God would have us see it, and interacting with the world as God would have us interact. It helps us by showing what was always there, God's presence in the ordinary. Creative, illuminating, and godly.""--Vern S. Poythress, author of Knowing ...

Gillian Murphy The Legacy of Francisco Franco

How did the once submissive Lieutenant Francisco Franco Bahamonde rise through the ranks of the Spanish Army to become one of the world's longest reigning dictators in history? This insight into the development of Franco charts his early life from a loyal military pawn to a reluctant saviour and ultimately to the ruthless totalitarian as he is now known to be. Throughout this work, the key influences that shaped the policies of his brutal regime will be revealed. Most notably, the great influence and might of the Catholic Church who gave weight to Franco at crucial moments in his rise to dictator. The Church also played a pivotal role in carving his values and affected his legislative decisions, which permeated every aspect of Spanish life and Spanish morals. And yet, despite his endeavour to ensure that this legacy of draconian measures would continue after his death, Franco's protégé had other ideas thus the Transition to Democracy took flight. This narrative portrays how, in the following 30 years, Spain emerged from the oppressive shadow of the Franco dictatorship to become one of the most liberal thinking societies in the world.

Gods' Preeminent Stance Volume 3 encourages the reader to 'faithfully walk through fear'. In this book I deal with various ways that fear attacks our mind, and how we deal with "issues" will determine how fear affects your next decision. To successfully deal with fear we need a strong self-assurance and clear mind to properly hear from God and view situations in their true perspective. The problem that often arises is that many Christians fear what people think and say about them far more than they fear disappointing God.Fear of moving towards your goals cripples your progress. The fear of what others may think or say is an imaginary device that makes your decisions unconquerable. What are you fearful of and why do you fear it?

Making use of cutting-edge psychological, philosophical, sociological, and economic theory, he shows how these fears are generated by infotainment's craze for rating human beings. The book is a unique blend of an interpretation of the historical present and a poignant description of contemporary individual experience, anxiety, and hopes, in which Strenger makes use of his decades of clinical experience in existential psychotherapy. Without falling into the trap of simplistic self-help advice, Strenger shows how a process he calls active self-acceptance, together with serious intellectual investment in our worldviews, can provide us with stable identity and meaning.

Ilaria Patulli No Fear of Global Warming. Temporal - Spatial Biases and Response Engagement into Fear Environmental Appeal

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Ethics in the Media, University of Amsterdam (Graduated School of Communication), language: English, abstract: This Master's Thesis explores Spatial and Temporal dimensions of psychological distance into fear environmental campaigns. In order to examine factors which may increase individual's engagement in climate change issue, different levels of spatial (Local - Global) and temporal (Near Future - Future) dimensions of psychological distance are analyzed into fear campaigns, using Witte's EPPM principles. In particular, it was supposed that individual's perceived vulnerability and perceived severity of the threat mediate this relationship. In the study, three main assumption were examined. The first one proposed that Local messages, compared to Global, were more effective in increasing individual's perceived vulnerability, and that this would increase individual's engagement with the climate issue. The second conjecture started with an inquisition concerning whether Local or Global message lead to more severity, assuming that the level of increased perceived severity would increase individual's engagement with climate change. The third hypothesis supposed that the use of a Near Future temporal representation, in comparison to a distant Future representation, was more effective in increasing individual's perceived vulnerability and severity, and this would lead to a higher ...

N. Michelle Murray Home Away from Home. Immigrant Narratives, Domesticity, and Coloniality in Contemporary Spanish Culture

Home Away from Home: Immigrant Narratives, Domesticity, and Coloniality in Contemporary Spanish Culture examines ideological, emotional, economic, and cultural phenomena brought about by migration through readings of works of literature and film featuring domestic workers. In the past thirty years, Spain has experienced a massive increase in immigration. Since the 1990s, immigrants have been increasingly female, as bilateral trade agreements, migration quotas, and immigration policies between Spain and its former colonies (including the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, and the Philippines) have created jobs for foreign women in the domestic service sector. These migrations reveal that colonial histories continue to be structuring elements of Spanish national culture, even in a democratic era in which its former colonies are now independent. Migration has also transformed the demographic composition of Spain and has created complex new social relations around the axes of gender, race, and nationality. Representations of migrant domestic workers provide critical responses to immigration and its feminization, alongside profound engagements with how the Spanish nation has changed since the end of the Franco era in 1975. Throughout Home Away from Home, readings of works of literature and film show that texts concerning the transnational nature of domestic work uniquely provide a nuanced account of the cultural shifts occurring in late twentieth- through twenty-first...

Spain in Our Hearts: Americans in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939

From the moment it began in 1936, the Spanish Civil War became the political question of the age. Hitler and Mussolini quickly sent aircraft, troops and supplies to the right-wing generals bent on overthrowing Spain's elected government. Millions of people around the world felt passionately that rapidly advancing fascism must be halted in Spain; if not there, where? More than 35,000 volunteers from dozens of other countries went to help defend the Spanish Republic. Adam Hochschild, the acclaimed author of King Leopold's Ghost, evokes this tumultuous period mainly through the lives of Americans involved in the war. A few are famous, such as Ernest Hemingway, but others are less familiar. They include a nineteen-year-old Kentucky woman, a fiery leftist who came to wartime Spain on her honeymoon; a young man who ran away from his Pennsylvania college and became the first American casualty in the battle for Madrid; and a swashbuckling Texas oilman who covertly violated US law and sold Generalissimo Francisco Franco most of the fuel for his army. Two New York Times reporters, fierce rivals, covered the war from opposite sides, with opposite sympathies. There are Britons in Hochschild's cast of characters as well: one, a London sculptor, fought with the American battalion; another, who had just gone down from Cambridge, joined Franco's army and found himself fighting against the Americans; and a third is someone whose experience of combat in Spain had a profound effect on his life,...

Human beings often struggle to find a life filled with passion, happiness... and just plain goodness. This struggle drives many to depression, addictive tendencies, or even self-destruction. Author and New Thought minister Edward Viljoen argues that the struggle need not be an arduous or painful one - that through garden-variety acts of kindness, faith, and compassion we can create beautiful lives. Using stories, personal examples, tips, and exercises, this book will guide the reader to realize that wherever they are, they can create meaning and beauty in their life and in the world. Viljoen provides deep insights into how we can live happier lives including: -How life is a paradox of both wholeness and brokenness -How caring about the ordinary things causes extraordinary life experiences -How society's messages about perfection distract us from our ordinary goodness -How faith is a muscle that must be exercised -How in moments of exasperation we sometimes lose our composure, and how that is nothing to be ashamed about -How ordinary goodness leads to a redefining of Divinity People spend much of their lives trying to be fulfilled and happy. What this book shows is that this is attainable - nothing extraordinary required.

This is a cruel, heartless world with no respect for life, love, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Often characteristics of fear and paranoia develop as a way of coping with painful mental and emotional experiences. Many are trapped in the prison of fear, anxiety, doubt, intense outbursts, paranoia, unfulfilled relationships, or broken hearts. Fearful people often gravitate to one another for comfort and support. But their destructive habits do not produce the loving relationships they desperately need.Even though it seems reasonable to fear, Jesus does not want us to be consumed with it. Replace the heartbreak of fear with characteristics of faith that transform lives and relationships. It’s important to reject fearful thoughts as we draw strength in a close relationship with Jesus that gives us the power to love, forgive, and trust others in a more excellent way. The life skills found in biblical scripture are keys to healing.First, we must find love, peace, comfort, and security in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Then these qualities spill over into our love lives. It doesn’t happen the other way around. These are principles of health and healing:• Submit our lives completely to the teaching of the Jesus.• Identify with Biblical promises of peace to calm our fears.• In the process of self-examination, forgive ourselves.• In the process of examining our relationships, forgive others.• Apply God’s principle of love, wisdom, and faith in romance and marriage.• Trust ...

These are stories about sudden moments of change in ordinary people's lives; moments of hope and struggle and transformation. They are also narratives which deftly explore the hidden intricacies of the human heart: tales of unconventional love and illicit love, tales of uxorious love and infidelity, of love triangles and of long-lost love. The stories gathered here share a common sensibility, too: one which seeks to uncover the profound within the minutiae of everyday life and work, and which reveals with insight and compassion the tightrope we all walk between the debilitating threat of loss and the hope which sustains us...

Ronald Frederick J. Living Like You Mean It. Use the Wisdom and Power of Your Emotions to Get the Life You Really Want

In LIVING LIKE YOU MEAN IT, author Ronald J. Frederick, does a brilliant job of describing why people are so afraid of their emotions and how this fear creates a variety of problems in their lives. While the problems are different, the underlying issue is often the same. At the core of their distress is what Dr. Frederick refers to as feelings phobia. Whether it s the experience of love, joy, anger, sadness, or surprise, our inborn ability to be a fully feeling person has been hijacked by fear–and it s fear that s keeping us from a better life. The book begins with a questionnaire-style list that help readers take an honest look at themselves and recognize whether and how they are afraid of their feelings. It then moves on to explore the origins of fear of feeling and introduces a four-part program for overcoming the fear: (1) Become aware of and learn to recognize feelings–anger, sadness, joy, love, fear, guilt/shame, surprise, disgust. (2) Master techniques for taming the fear. (3) Let the feeling work its way all the way through to its resolution. (4) Open up and put those feelings into words and communicate them confidently. With wisdom, humor, and compassion, the book uses stories and examples to help readers see that overcoming feelings phobia is the key to a better life and more fulfilling relationships.

The stories included in this year’s collection take place in far-flung corners of the world, the outback, a prison and suburban backyards. Some recall great adventures and life-threatening experiences. Others describe profound encounters with a gracious God through seemingly ordinary events. But all of them show that there is something truly extraordinary to be seen when God works in the lives of ordinary people.

Hohweiler Gary Fear Not. A Journey from Fear to Freedom

What has fear stolen from you or your loved one? Fear is a dream killer, and if left unchecked, it will keep you from walking in your destiny. The good news is in the Good News. God, in His word, reveals everything we need to know to totally eradicate fear from our lives. In “Fear Not! A Journey from Fear to Freedom,” Gary Hohweiler examines every scripture dealing with fear, anxiety, and worry, and applies God’s solution to each and every situation. God took the time to make sure He gave us everything we need to live a fearless life. Many of us treat God’s word like the owner’s manual in our car. We pull it out only when we have a problem. Well, fear is a problem for 99.9 percent of the population. If you are in the .1 percent not impacted, please disregard this book. By the way, His word was not given to us as a suggestion. God’s word is like medicine to the soul and spirit: apply it liberally, daily until you walk in complete freedom of fear. Gary Hohweiler had a radical encounter with God on a New Mexico mountaintop on September 10, 2005. That day, he received a heart transplant performed by the Lord Himselt. It was there that Gary learned God could use anyone to accomplish His purpose. He and Randa Lea, his wife of thirty-three years, have just recently moved back to God’s country (aka Oklahoma). They have been happily married for nine years since his heart transplant. Gary has served as a deacon and LifeGroup leader at Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, for the past fi...

Jeff Kusner Fearful to Fearless

Fearful To Fearless brings together almost 400 passages that demonstrate or direct us to not be afraid, to not worry or be anxious, to look to Christ for strength and comfort, and be transformed to have a worshipful fear and awe of God. Each passage of scripture is accompanied by a short biblical truth to help provide clarity and encouragement. The inspiration for Fearful To Fearless is the biblical account of Jesus calming the storm in Mark 4:35-41. It's a demonstration of Christ's power over nature and His ability to comfort us in the storm. It showcases our need to call on Him in prayer and place our trust and reliance on Him.But what we also see in this passage is the transformation from being afraid, to having the fear of God. The disciples just witnessed the power that He had over the sea and storm and realized the power that He had over them. They were now in awe, they marveled at what they just observed and were filled with the fear of God, a godly fear of the power and grace of Christ during the calm, a fear of the Lord and all His goodness, a reverent awe that was full of honor and glorifying to Christ.

Ordinary people can have extraordinary lives. Sara "Sadie" Johnston Mead (1885-1966) wasn't famous. If you hadn't known her personally, you probably would have never known her name. But her life was far from ordinary, as were the lives of the individuals from whom she descended.Until now, Sadie's descendants never knew her whole story. Nothing had been known of her early ancestral roots in New England. No one knew Sadie had been adopted and instead of being an only child, had seven biological siblings and half-siblings. Few knew that she married young, experienced the death of a child, divorced once, and was widowed twice. And with much hard work, managed to successfully raise a daughter, mostly on her own. Extraordinary. This book is a loving tribute to Sadie, her ancestors, and her descendants. And a recognition to all other ordinary families with extraordinary stories to tell.
