A novel approach to decision engineering, with a verified framework for modeling human reasoning Soft Computing Evaluation Logic provides an in-depth examination of evaluation decision problems and presents comprehensive guidance toward the use of the Logic Scoring of Preference (LSP) method in modeling complex decision criteria. Fully aligned with current developments in computational intelligence, the discussion covers the design and use of LSP criteria for evaluation and comparison in diverse areas, such as search engines, medical conditions, real estate, space management, habitat mitigation projects in ecology, and land use and residential development suitability maps, with versatile transfer to other similar decision-modeling contexts. Human decision making is rife with fuzziness, imprecision, uncertainty, and half-truths—yet humans make evaluation decisions every day. In this book, such decision processes are observed, analyzed, and modeled. The result is graded logic, a soft computing mathematical infrastructure that provides both formal logic and semantic generalizations of classical Boolean logic. Graded logic is used for logic aggregation in the context of evaluation models consistent with observable properties of human reasoning. The LSP method, based on graded logic and logic aggregation, is a vital component of an industrial-strength decision engineering framework. Thus, the book: Provides detailed theoretical background for graded logic Provides a theory of logic aggregators Explains the LSP method for designing complex evaluation criteria and their use Shows techniques for evaluation, comparison, and selection of complex systems, as well as the cost/suitability analysis, optimization, sensitivity analysis, tradeoff analysis, and missingness-tolerant aggregation Includes a survey of available LSP software tools, including ISEE, ANSY and LSP.NT. With quantitative modeling of human reasoning, novel approaches to modeling decision criteria, and a verified decision engineering framework applicable to a broad array of applications, this book is an invaluable resource for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners working within the decision engineering realm.

This book offers a method, called FOCUS, for the structured assessment of new business opportunities. Using FOCUS enables managers to increase the effectiveness of opportunity assessment resulting in a higher rate of opportunities won. The quality of new projects will improve and sales channel conflicts, wasted resources and financial risk will be minimised. Based on the Simple Multi-Attribute Rating Technique (SMART), FOCUS provides a straightforward decision analysis process that enables all members of the bid team to fully understand the requirements of the opportunity and the pros and cons of engaging with it before taking a bid/no-bid decision. Use of FOCUS enforces the breakdown of a complex problem into independent, easy to calculate measurable criteria, which are subsequently ranked even if they are difficult to rate. FOCUS, using a group approach, provides an unbiased weighting and ranking of the decision- making criteria leading to consensus between all those involved in the decision-making process.

Making a decision, of any importance, is never simple. On the one hand, specialists in decision theory do not come within the reach of most policy makers and, secondly, there are very few books on pragmatic decision that are not purely anecdotal. In addition, there is virtually no book that provides a link between decision-making and action. This book provides a bridge between the latest results in artificial intelligence, neurobiology, psychology and decision-making for action. What is the role of intuition or emotion? What are the main psychological biases of which we must be wary? How can we avoid being manipulated? What is the proper use of planning? How can we remain rational even if one is not an expert in probabilities? Perhaps more importantly for managers, how does one go from decision to action? So many questions fundamental to the practice of decision-making are addressed. This book dissects all issues that arise almost daily for decision-makers, at least for major decisions. Drawing on numerous examples, this book answers, in plain language and imagery, all your questions. The final chapter takes the form of a brief reminder – everything you have to remember to be a good decision-maker.

Research paper from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, FOM Hochschule für Oekonomie und Management gemeinnützige GmbH, Hochschulstudienzentrum Freiburg, course: Management Decision Making, language: English, abstract: The most important job of any executive is making decisions. It is also the toughest and riskiest job, because bad decisions can damage a business and a career, in some situations irreparably. In many cases these bad decisions occur when alternatives were not clearly defined, the right information was not collected, the costs and benefits were not accurately weighed, or the decision maker himself was sabotaged by the human brain. In the present complex environment, the executives call for a way to cope with the myriad factors that affect the achievement of goals and the consistency of the judgement the decision makers use to draw valid conclusions. (Harvard Business Review 2011, p. 1, Saaty 2013, p. 6) Many difficulties like uncertainty about the future, variation of consequences of different actions, difficulties because of too few or too many available alternatives, and complexity of a decision situation, if more factors have to be taken into account, make it more important to support the decision makers with procedures and tools that have been developed for a systematic selection of requirements and processing of relevant information. The general approach of decision making ranges from the highly complex problems to the relativel...

Annika Lorenz Acquisition vs. Alliance. The Impact of Hubris on Governance Choice

This book unifies and draws a connection to different concepts of organizational behavior, decision-making theories, psychology and strategy research. Furthermore, it focuses on the theoretical backgrounds of managerial decision-making, different personality concepts and their impact on strategic decisions. Since strategic decisions are made by individuals, it is worth analyzing to what extent personality phenomena such as hubris influence the choice between acquisitions and alliances. In fact, both governance modes are a necessary prerequisite for companies to remain healthy, gain competitive advantages and hence, become world leaders. First, this book provides a literature review of the current research status on governance modes, particularly laying an emphasis on acquisitions and alliances. Moreover, it is explored what hubris actually means, which different facets are underlying and how it is different from other related concepts, such as narcissism, overconfidence, and core self-evaluations. Subsequently, studies having dealt with the concept of hubris in general, hubris in investment decisions and hubris in governance mode decisions in particular are analyzed. Numerous of these studies on strategic and investment decision making have found managers infected with hubris to regularly overpay for acquisitions but none has yet analyzed whether hubristic decision-makers also prefer acquisitions over alliances and which decision making criteria they consider when making such...

American higher education needs a major reframing of student learning outcomes assessment Dynamic changes are underway in American higher education. New providers, emerging technologies, cost concerns, student debt, and nagging doubts about quality all call out the need for institutions to show evidence of student learning. From scholars at the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education presents a reframed conception and approach to student learning outcomes assessment. The authors explain why it is counterproductive to view collecting and using evidence of student accomplishment as primarily a compliance activity. Today's circumstances demand a fresh and more strategic approach to the processes by which evidence about student learning is obtained and used to inform efforts to improve teaching, learning, and decision-making. Whether you're in the classroom, an administrative office, or on an assessment committee, data about what students know and are able to do are critical for guiding changes that are needed in institutional policies and practices to improve student learning and success. Use this book to: Understand how and why student learning outcomes assessment can enhance student accomplishment and increase institutional effectiveness Shift the view of assessment from being externally driven to internally motivated Learn how assessment results can help inform decision-making Use assessment data to manage change and improve student success Gauging student learning is necessary if institutions are to prepare students to meet the 21st century needs of employers and live an economically independent, civically responsible life. For assessment professionals and educational leaders, Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education offers both a compelling rationale and practical advice for making student learning outcomes assessment more effective and efficient.

D. Palix A model of collaborative society

Our political and economic systems in the western world now seem well established. Yet we are far from the democratic ideal, a model of government, "by the people, for the people". The purpose of this essay is to go in depth into the idea of letting citizens express themselves on the type of society they wish, and considering the synthesis of these data defines an objective given by the citizens to the decision-makers. This idea establishes a paradigm shift that leads to elaborate new institutions: a new economic model, improved decision-making processes, and new ways to promote decision-makers, while guaranteeing an efficient and dynamic system. These give shape eventually to a new model of society, a collaborative model, where everyone finds their logical place.

Kamran Farooq A Novel Ontology and Machine Learning Driven Hybrid Clinical Decision Support Framework for Cardiovascular Preventative Care

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2015 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, grade: -, University of Stirling (Computing Science and Mathematics), language: English, abstract: Clinical risk assessment of chronic illnesses is a challenging and complex task which requires the utilisation of standardised clinical practice guidelines and documentation procedures in order to ensure consistent and efficient patient care. Conventional cardiovascular decision support systems have significant limitations, which include the inflexibility to deal with complex clinical processes, hard-wired rigid architectures based on branching logic and the inability to deal with legacy patient data without significant software engineering work. In light of these challenges, we are proposing a novel ontology and machine learning-driven hybrid clinical decision support framework for cardiovascular preventative care. Renjin J Bright Demonstration of Failure Theories of FRP Composite Materials

Project Report from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - General, Basics, grade: 8.82, , language: English, abstract: One of the challenges to overcome for achieving higher efficiencies with composite materials is the development of more accurate failure criteria. Development of new failure criteria requires deep insight into the existing failure theories. This work provides a brief outlook on the existing failure criteria such as Tsai-Hill, Tsai-Wu, Hashin-Rotem, Hashin, Rotem, Edge, Sun and Puck. The failure predictability of these failure criteria have been assessed by comparing with the commonly used failure criteria such as Maximum Stress and Maximum strain criteria and experimental data. For this purpose failure envelopes have been generated, considering the case of a wind turbine blade. For constructing failure envelopes C++ programs have been written. In connection with the above analysis software with two modules using Visual Basic as front end and Microsoft Access as back end has been developed. First module of this software is meant for generating lamina failure envelopes using the above mentioned failure criteria. It also has the facility of comparing these failure criteria with commonly used failure criteria such as Maximum Stress and Maximum Strain failure criteria and experimental data. Second module of this software deals with the failure analysis of composite laminate by evaluating the resulting stresses and failure indices using the above mentioned fail...

Metivier Kathryn Modeling Open Space Acquisition in Boulder, Colorado

Purchasing land for open space use is crucial for municipalities that are concerned with conserving land and mitigating urban sprawl. Land-use modeling measures the ecological vs. economic trade-off. This book develops a land-use modeling system termed Modeling Open Space Acquisition (MOSA) that quantifies the ecological value of land targeted for open space acquisition. MOSA is designed as a decision support tool for local policymakers to identify ecologically rich parcels that can be targeted by using a multi-criteria model. Each parcel in the study area (Boulder, Colorado) is ranked by weighted criteria generated from a variety of public data sources. The weighted criteria include wildlife habitat, agricultural lands, historical sites, recreation corridors, vegetative biodiversity, riparian wetlands, parcel proximity, and parcel size. MOSA provides supplemental evidence to quantifying, targeting, and prioritizing parcel acquisition for preservation. Governing agencies can benefit from land-use modeling where parcel acquisition is evaluated from a scientific classification of natural resource capital over a parcel's economic value alone.

Gerald Feigin The Art of Computer Modeling for Business Analytics. Paradigms and Case Studies

Companies today routinely utilize computer models to help make decisions. These models take many forms, from simple spreadsheets to sophisticated computer simulations. The chief underlying reason for constructing a model is to assess the impact of a decision on business performance. Based on that assessment, model users will make recommendations and take actions. The tacit assumption is that the model captures the relevant factors at a sufficient level of detail to make accurate projections. The validity of the model thus depends on a host of judgments that the model builder makes in constructing the model-some transparent, others implicit. These judgments are what make building a computer model more of an art than a science. This book is about constructing and using computer models to help decision makers in the business world make more informed decisions. It is intended to provide useful case studies for individuals who are interested in building effective decision models-ones that will get used to drive important business decisions. The goal is to demonstrate how to build effective models quickly and inexpensively, using software that is widely available and often free. It is a practical guide, informed by the author's experience building such models for an array of businesses in diverse industries.

Patients with intellectual disability (ID) can benefit from the full range of mental health services. To ensure that psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment interventions are relevant and effective; individuals with ID should be evaluated and treated within the context of their developmental framework. Behavior should be viewed as a form of communication. Individuals with ID often present with behavioral symptoms complicated by limited expressive language skills and undiagnosed medical conditions. Many training programs do not include focused study of individuals with ID, despite the fact that patients with ID will be seen by virtually every mental health practitioner. In this book, the authors present a framework for competent assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders in individuals with ID. Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability is a resource guide for psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and other prescribers treating patients with ID. It is a supplemental text for psychiatry residents, medical students, psychology graduate students, psychotherapists, counselors, social workers, behavior support specialists and nurses. To assist the practicing clinician the book includes: Clinical vignettes Clinical pearls Charts for quick reference Issues concerning medications and poly-pharmacy Altered diagnostic criteria specific for use with individuals with ID There are no evidence-based principles dedicated to psychotropic medication use in ID, but consensus guidelines address the high prevalence of poly-pharmacy. Altered diagnostic criteria have been published which accommodate less self-report and incorporate collateral information; this book reviews the literature on psychotropic medications, consensus guidelines, and population-specific diagnostic criteria sets. Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability also includes: Interviewing techniques and assessment tips for all levels of communicative ability as well as for nonverbal individuals Assessment of aggression to determine etiology and formulate a treatment plan Overview of types of psychotherapy and suggested alterations for each to increase efficacy Relevant legal issues for caregivers and treatment providers The detective work involved in mental health assessment of individuals with ID is challenging yet rewarding. The highest quality mental health treatment limits hospital days, improves quality of life and often allows individuals to live in the least restrictive environments. Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability is a must have resource for clinicians treating the ID population.

"This book should have a place on the bookshelf of every forensic scientist who cares about the science of evidence interpretation" Dr. Ian Evett, Principal Forensic Services Ltd, London, UK Continuing developments in science and technology mean that the amounts of information forensic scientists are able to provide for criminal investigations is ever increasing. The commensurate increase in complexity creates difficulties for scientists and lawyers with regard to evaluation and interpretation, notably with respect to issues of inference and decision. Probability theory, implemented through graphical methods, and specifically Bayesian networks, provides powerful methods to deal with this complexity. Extensions of these methods to elements of decision theory provide further support and assistance to the judicial system. Bayesian Networks for Probabilistic Inference and Decision Analysis in Forensic Science provides a unique and comprehensive introduction to the use of Bayesian decision networks for the evaluation and interpretation of scientific findings in forensic science, and for the support of decision-makers in their scientific and legal tasks. • Includes self-contained introductions to probability and decision theory. • Develops the characteristics of Bayesian networks, object-oriented Bayesian networks and their extension to decision models. • Features implementation of the methodology with reference to commercial and academically available software. • Presents standard networks and their extensions that can be easily implemented and that can assist in the reader’s own analysis of real cases. • Provides a technique for structuring problems and organizing data based on methods and principles of scientific reasoning. • Contains a method for the construction of coherent and defensible arguments for the analysis and evaluation of scientific findings and for decisions based on them. • Is written in a lucid style, suitable for forensic scientists and lawyers with minimal mathematical background. • Includes a foreword by Ian Evett. The clear and accessible style of this second edition makes this book ideal for all forensic scientists, applied statisticians and graduate students wishing to evaluate forensic findings from the perspective of probability and decision analysis. It will also appeal to lawyers and other scientists and professionals interested in the evaluation and interpretation of forensic findings, including decision making based on scientific information.

The handbook links LCA and responsible decision making and how the life cycle concept is a critical element in environmental sustainability. It covers issues such as building capacity in developing countries and emerging economies so that they are more capable of harnessing the potential in LCA for sustainable development. Governments play a very important role with the leverage they have through procurement, regulation, international treaties, tax incentives, public outreach, and other policy tools. This compilation of points to the clear trend for incorporating life cycle information into the design and development processes for products and policies, just as quality and safety concerns are now addressed throughout product design and development. The Life Cycle Assessment Student Handbook is not just for students. It is also a valuable resource for practitioners looking for a desktop reference on LCA or for any engineer, manager, or policy-maker wishing to learn about LCA.
