Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Tourism, grade: 2,2, University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde, 200 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Tourism has been acknowledged by practitioners and governments to be a tool for economic development, not exclusively but mainly, of less developed countries with few other competitive sectors and, therefore, for boosting their domestic economy as well as reducing the endemic poverty in Africa. This paradigm is difficult to apply when the tourism industry is not viable in a country and the great majority of tourism establishments have insufficient numbers of clients to make profit. In this respect, some findings indicate that, tourism and local small-scale agriculture (World Bank, 2006b) have been widely neglected by the Government of Sierra Leone, all efforts having been directed onto the development of the mining sector. In fact, while production and marketing constraints can be solved as stated in the wider agriculture literature, due to the nature of Sierra Leone as a "fragile state", findings suggest that the lack of commitment and attitude of the Government to more responsible tourism forms or approaches will hamper any attempt to foster strategic alliances between the poor agriculture sector and tourism industry or other lucrative market-segments. Although the recent tourism development in Sierra Leone addresses the important issue of preserving the few available tourist attractions, a...

Tourism is one of the largest and fastest rising services businesses in the world. It has the possible to create many works and create huge wealth. Tourism has become a human rights subject and tourism rights means recognising and addressing the multiple human rights effects and topics related with tourism. It effects on the survival, the environment of original people, the welfare of other cultures. The incongruence and exploitation of the poor by the rich is intrinsic to the worst sort of tourism practices. Actually, tourism growth regularly violates people's human rights, chiefly poor and vulnerable societies in developing countries, exacerbating poverty and trapping publics in cycles of privation. I am conscious that tourism industry can have negative impacts, though it's sometimes hard to know what to do about it.

The author sets out to investigate institutions responsible for tourism development and to test possibility of application of "Third Way" model of tourism planning in the country. The findings show that the concept of tourism planning is well understood but remained a theoretical percept rather than an implementable practice. Furthermore, the present situation can be attributed to the political complexity of the economies in transitions and reluctance of the officials to commit themselves to a planning process which require responsibilities and sacrifices. The book gives chance to readers to draw clear picture of tourism potentials and problems in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The book is aimed to all those interested in tourism planning worldwide and especially tourism planning authorities in B&H with hope to be of great help in their future tourism planning practices and approaches

The goal of this book is to deal, in a provocative way, with a number of key issues involvingthe increased participation of the private sector within cultural tourism. My goal is notto write a complete overview of the field. Instead, this short book deals with a fairly circumscribedset of issues involving contemporary changes within cultural tourism. Sincemodern business largely focuses on serving customers, a major focus of this book concernsmarketing thought and its implications in regard to cultural tourism. In large measure, thisbook seeks to help host communities and their advocates to become familiar with andcomfortable within a private sector context as well as being able to interact in such anenvironment. The book starts with a two-chapter introduction that focuses upon the distinctive role of cultural tourism. As emphasized inchapter 1, a dilemma arises because cultural tourism must simultaneously serve multiple stakeholders and do so in equitableways. This is much more complex than the more typical task of concentrating upon the needs, wants, and desires of customers. These ideas are refined in chapter 2 where the discussion centers primarily upon the importance of serving hostcommunities, in addition to customers. Certainly, catering to customers continues to be an issue, but it should be envisionedas an ad hoc method of serving the host community.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Tourism, grade: 1.3, Heilbronn University, language: English, abstract: Often referred to as the 'smokeless industry', tourism has become one of the fastest growing, most dynamic sectors of economic growth in the world. Tourism is a key sector in many developing countries, which show potential. However, over-reliance on tourism, especially mass tourism carries significant risks to tourism-dependent economies. As a result, many developing countries have since espoused the principle of sustainability in shaping their tourism policies. However, few of them have been able to convert this into concrete action owing to the short-term economic interests to which, all too often, priority is given, to the detriment of protecting social and environmental assets. The purpose of this paper is to create and formulate clear, firm and equitable guidelines in a tourism policy concept that is set in the context of sustainable development and aims further to raise the competitive position of a destination. Theory will be demonstrated in practical terms in the case of the Caribbean tourism destination, the Dominican Republic.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Tourism, , language: English, abstract: Economic impact refers to the changes in the economic contribution resulting from specific events or activities that comprise 'shocks' to the tourism system. Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA) are a statistical tool. They are used to report how much the tourism sector has contributed to an economy and how important the tourism sector is compared to other sectors in the economy. Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) tourism model can provide more realistic analytical recommendations to policy makers. More specifically, the model can be used to measure economy-wide yield for tourism destinations. TSAs based estimates of the direct contribution of tourism in Australia are provided to illustrate the use of this tool. The paper then discusses the importance of developing TSAs at the regional level and the approaches that can be employed (bottom up, top down, mixed), as well as the limitations of TSAs as a policy instrument. It then discusses CGE modelling as a tool of economic impact analysis providing CGE based estimates of the economic impacts of increased inbound tourism to Queensland to illustrate the use of this technique. The analysis is expected to enhance stakeholder understanding the separate roles that TSAs and CGE modelling can play in d...

Development in the fisheries sector particularly post-harvest sub-sector has failed to deliver many of its promises to fisherfolks in Nigeria. The policies imposed from above by international agencies and central governments have been sadly at variance with the preference, needs and constraints of fisherfolks. Hence, technologies introduced are not adopted. Processing activities over the years evolved through application of indigenous knowledge (IK) practices but development interventions do not consider these in policy framework. This book specifies the underlying factors that predispose fish processors to use indigenous knowledge practices and the catalogue of indigenous knowledge practices used in fish processing in Nigeria. It contributes tremendously to IK literature as it provides rare sources and practices in post-harvest sector. This book is for development programme managers and project leaders who wish to incorporate an indigenous knowledge element into their work. It offers a continuous spectrum of approaches and tools, from those useful to persons seeking a quick and limited IK component, to those interested in a more long-term and thorough IK investigation.

The livestock sector in Ethiopia contributes 12% and 33% of the total and agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP), respectively, and provides livelihood for 65% of the population. The sector also accounts for 12-15% of the total export earnings. These livestock genetic resources are important or vital to development of the economic ,social and environmental of the one country. The diverse agro-ecology and agronomic practice prevailing in the country together with the huge population of livestock in general and poultry in particular, could be a promising attribute to boost up the sector and increase its contribution to the total agricultural output as well as to improve the living standards of the poor livestock keepers. Poultry production, as one segment of livestock production, has a peculiar privilege to...

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Tourism, Griffith University, course: PhD, language: English, abstract: After the end of nearly three decades of civil war in 2009, Sri Lanka is experiencing a tourism boom with a record level of international tourist arrivals. The Sri Lankan government has now identified tourism as a main component in its post-war development strategy. Despite this new policy enthusiasm there is dearth of research on tourism in Sri Lanka. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to contribute to the literature on tourism in Sri Lanka in a number of ways. First, it provides a systematic historical narrative on Sri Lankan tourism and explains how Sri Lanka missed opportunities in the past. Second, it develops a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model focusing on tourism and constructs a database with an emphasis on tourism. Third, it examines the economy-wide effects of the post-war tourism boom in Sri Lanka.

The scope of this report is broad as it incorporates the case studies of five major players in Indian healthcare tourism sector. It has been observed that Healthcare Tourism and Medical Tourism are interchangeable terms. In general, there are two main causes (developed countries' increasing cost of healthcare services and their overburdened healthcare infrastructure) that have resulted in enhancing the demand for healthcare tourism. Medical Malpractices Insurance is the major for increasing the healthcare cost in developed countries. Commonly, medical malpractice insurance is considered as major aspect for increasing the cost of medical treatment, widening the delay in the waitlist and also enhancing the movement of medical professionals from one region to another. India has competitive edge in the healthcare tourism because of certain characteristics: healthcare professional availability, low-cost medical treatment, enhancing popularity of its traditional wellness systems and country's existing reputation for treat of relatively advance healthcare segments (such as organ transplant, cardio-vascular surgery and eye surgery/ By reviewing all the case studies, it has ...

Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Tourism, University of Kelaniya, course: Economic Modelling, language: English, abstract: Measuring the contribution of tourism to a national economy has always been a frustrating exercise. Tourism does not have specific products. It represents the sum of expenditure by travellers for wide range of products. It is not possible to identify tourism as a single "industry" in the national accounts, its value to the economy is not readily revealed. As a result of the absence of tourism in official economic statistics, there is often an on-going battle to establish tourism credibility as an economic activity and generator of income in the economy. As a result, a significant volume of tourism research over the past few decades have focussed on the development and use of a variety of economic techniques aimed at quantifying the effects of tourism on an economy. In conventional literature has proven that Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling is the best applied tool addressing and analysing tourism related issues in an economy. The paper provided a complete description of the theoretical structure of the CGE-Tourism including all equations and variables by using relevant Excerpts for different blocks of equations in the TABLO file associated with the GEMPACK software used to operationalise the model. The incorporation of tourism using the dummy sector approach into an ORANI type CGE model as an extension and can be co...

In many public sector organisations, there has been little or no adoption of a proactive asset management strategy. Where an extensive property portfolio exists, this can result in poor overall utilisation of the portfolio, exemplified by excessive vacant property or properties not being put to best use. In such situations there is a risk that the building stock deteriorates more rapidly than expected, leading to expensive maintenance and repair charges. Lack of a proactive asset management strategy will impact on the services delivered by such organisations. Public Sector Property Asset Management covers all aspects of asset management in the public sector, including the overall concept, the development of asset management strategies and the implementation of asset management practices. It evaluates asset management strategies, processes and practices to show how effective management of property assets support business activities or service delivery functions. The reader will understand the importance of improving decision-making through the recognition of all costs of owning and operating those assets throughout their lifecycle, leading to improved business process activities or service delivery functions which greatly assist in meeting the social and economic objectives of such organisations. Written for all practitioners currently involved in asset management, the book will also be useful in the university environment, to those teaching, researching or learning about asset management in the public sector.

The study investigated the impact of Zimbabwe's economic crises on tourism viability from 2000-2010. Data were collected through questionnaires, in depth interviews and document analysis and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 13. The study revealed that tourism was negatively affected by the economic crisis. It is concluded that the economic crisis impacted on tourism viability as evidenced by the low volumes of tourists. Recommendations drawn from this research are that there is need by government to develop tourism - related sectors that include transport, infrastructure development and information communication technology. The government should make sure that airports are refurbished to attract more tourists. The need for a conducive investment climate is important for the tourism sector as it is for all other sectors of the economy.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: „Sawasdee Khrap” – welcome to the kingdom of Thailand. A number of valid characterizations such as „The Land of Smiles”, „The Land of Temples and Pagodas” and „Tropical Vacation Paradise” describe Thailand at its best. In addition to these picturesque synonyms, the kingdom gained international recognition through its growing travel and hospitality industry. In 2001 Thailand once again booked the top spot as most preferred tourist destination in South East Asia as well as runner-up position in all of Asia, second only to China. When Muslim extremists hijacked four domestic U.S. flights and cowardly carried out the terrorist attack of 9-11 on the U.S.A., the global travel sector felt the direct impact of the terrorist attacks like no other industry. From one day to the other tourists decided to stay at or close to home and hotel rooms were left vacant. As major employer and source for foreign exchange earnings, Thailand’s tourism industry was no exception to the threat. As the brutality and human tragedy of this incident will always be remembered, the following report will focus solely on the implications for the tourism and hospitality industry. In specific, the text will take an in-depth look at the development of the first class hotel market in Bangkok following the September attacks. The report looks at 14 top hotels of Bangkok and their performance from January 2000 to March 2002. Special attention lies on the seven months following the U.S.A. attac...

This book is drawn from my PhD dissertation in forensic accounting. The dissertation deals with fraud and corruption in Cameroon and Nigeria. Fraud and corruption have eaten deep into the fabric of most economies with grievous effects that have limited the growth and infrastructural development of many nations and led many firms to the road of bankruptcy. Fraud is rarely seen but the symptoms of fraud are usually observed. The book is based on a comparative study aiming to determine the level of fraud and corrupt practices in Nigeria and Cameroon, and how to curb this menace. Since this study intends to compare fraud and corruption (FAC) practices in the public sector in these two countries, the broken trust theory was preferred because it provides a framework to uncover the determinants of possible motivations behind FAC practices in the public sector of an economy. To achieve this, an empirical study was conducted in Nigeria and Cameroon. The findings of this study research apply to the majority of African countries, and the book provides a roadmap for an effective and efficient way of fighting fraud and corruption in the African continent.
