Andrés Riera The Reaction of European Banks to Supervisory Stress Tests

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 5.5/6, University of Zurich, language: English, abstract: Supervisory stress tests conducted in recent years by the European Banking Authority (EBA) provided potentially useful information to banks' management. This paper examines empirically the hypothesis that the stress test results published have influence on banks' ongoing risk mitigation efforts. The hypothesis rests on the evidence that stress tests have induced a reaction in bank equity and debt markets, which in turn sends a clear market signal to banks' management. The concept of market discipline implies that market prices can influence the banks' management in terms of their risk mitigation decisions. Using a difference-in-differences approach, it is measured how banks reacted to their respective stress test results. The evaluation shows a general rise in risk mitigation efforts of EU banks when looking at average total capital ratios since 2007. However, the results do reject the hypothesis that banks with low stress test scores have a stronger incentive to mitigate risk after the stress test publication. Yet low score banks demonstrate that adequate capital buffers were already set in place long before the stress test results. The higher capital buffers are reflected in above average total capital ratios of low score banks. This fact indicates that these banks might h...

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 1,0, University of Westminster (Westminster Business School), course: International Finance, language: English, abstract: Because Ethical Banks have developed from niche players to serious competition for traditional banks, supposedly Ethical Banks and even traditional banks use the term Ethical Bank in order to sell bank services under the cloak of sustainable and ethically correct business conduct. Therefore, the focus of this research is to make truly Ethical Banks distinguishable from traditional banks by investigating, analysing and determining principles, Ethical Banks have to fulfil or refrain from in order to call themselves truly ethical. Based on the results of the academic research, a web- based survey identifies bank customer's attitude towards sustainability and ethics in general, their banking, as well as their ethical attitude towards nine areas of business, banks may be confronted with. The survey result build the basis for a list of positive and negative Ethical Guiding Principles (EGPs), which should serve as a general standard for Ethical Banks that want to settle down within the European Economic Area and Switzerland. The main conclusion drawn from this study is a comprehensive list of positive and negative EGPs, applicable either directly to Ethical Banks or as a basis for further research. But because of the ever-changing e...

Edmund Benjamin-Addy The Banking Sector in Ghana. Issues in Relation to Current Reforms

For in recent times, a lot of banks have rated Ghana a good destination to extend their operations, the competition in the banking industry has heightened. To ensure that banks maintain adequate working capital, the industry regulator, i.e. the Bank of Ghana, issued a directive instructing all commercial banks to ensure that by the close of December 2012 their operating capitals do not fall below GH¢60million. At the close of December 2011, almost all foreign banks had complied. However, some of the local banks are sensing serious limitation in meeting the order. Therefore, the study has the objective to identify the challenges these banks have to face and thereby, the author will recommend avenues for raising funds to meet the proposed capital requirement. This study is based on six banks that operate in the Accra business district, namely the National Investment Bank (NIB), the Ecobank Ghana Ltd. (ECB), the Prudential Bank, the Ghana Commercial Bank, the Merchant Bank Ghana and the Zenith Bank. Primary data was obtained by soliciting views from bank officials on questions as the following. Which challenges confront Ghanaian Banks in their cash mobilization efforts? How could the banks generate more funds from the Ghana Stock Exchange? What efforts were made to secure funding from strategic investors? How could they reduce operating cost to enhance working capital? The second data set is based on financial statements and brochures of the banks. There was a direct approach to ...

Diploma Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 1.0, Swiss Finance Institute (Bankmanagement), course: Executive Program, 49 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The global banking sector is currently undergoing fundamental changes. Banks face new challenges created by socio-economic and political developments and the potential of new information and communication technologies. Competition has risen to formerly unknown levels and active management of costs has become an ongoing tasks. Unlike the manufacturing industries most banks still cover large parts of their value chain by themselves. Lead by Anglo-Saxon institutes global banks have started in recent years to use the advantages of globalization by splitting up their value chains and by offshoring selected functions to countries offering wage differentials. According to experts banks have just started to create their global sourcing model, so that the offshoring volume is projected to increase further. While most banks have started their offshoring initiatives with IT functions, business process offshoring and even knowledge process offshoring have now become the main drivers of the move to the key offshoring locations like India, China and Eastern Europe. Banks from Switzerland have been spectators to the global move towards a global delivery model for many years. Only its two large global banks - UBS and Credit Suisse - ha...

Shengzhe Wang True Sale Securitization in Germany and China

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The Master thesis for LL.M. at Goethe university’s ILF titled “True Sale Securitization in Germany and China” is a comparative study about true sale securitization. The initial reason for a comparative study was the similarity of banking centred financial systems in these two countries. Another reason is connected with the True Sale Initiative (TSI), a plan composed by major German banks aiming at improving their financial situation. German banks start to be plagued by the non-performing loans (NPLs) since 2001 due to mediocre performance of German corporations and depreciation of banks’ investment to the east part during 1990s. Facing the competitions from other countries and under pressures from the International Convergence of Capital Measurement and Capital Standards: a Revised Framework (Basel II) issued by the Basel Committee on Banking and Supervisory Practice (Basel Committee) at the Bank for International Settlements, the German banks employed the TSI as one part of the bigger financial reform to regain competition in Europe and worldwide. December 2004, the first true sale securitization was successfully constructed in Germany after German federal government changed some of its formerly unfriendly legal, taxation and accounting rules. The German experiences with TSI can shed some light into how China to develop its asset-backed securities (ABS) market in order to save its heavy NPLs-burdened banks and find alternative funds for its corporatio...

Ali Abd Elrahman Elzahi Saaid The X-efficiency of Islamic Banks

The recent wave of Islamization in the Sudan has put spotlight on the efficiency implications of Sudanese Islamic banks. This book attempt to investigate the performance efficiency of Islamic banks in a full-fledged Islamic banking system. The application of Islamic instruments such as Musharakah, Murabahah, Salam and Mudarabah demands professional and well-disciplined risk-management strategies in Islamic banks. This is to minimize the defaults risk that may erode bank's profitability. Islamic instruments should not be treated like conventional loans. It requires greater supervision and monitoring operations. In this regard, labor should be trained to ensure that the Islamic operations succeeded as planned. This book might help both banks' shareholders and government to further understand the problem associate with the operation of Islamic banks. It also gives implications in guiding for the governments when plan deregulation and mergers. The study will also help the management of Islamic banks to assign suitable strategies to avoid further inefficient use of inputs and improve their managerial performance.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,67, Jacobs University Bremen gGmbH, language: English, abstract: The leadership criteria in the EFQM model will be used as a basis for the comparison of six different companies, namely the following banks: Citibank (USA), Deutsche Bank (Germany), Sumitomo Bank (Japan), BNP Paribas (France), Barclays (UK) and Commerzbank (Germany). These banks were chosen for their good solvency and position inside their own country as well as internationally. At the beginning of this paper, we will give a brief overview about the six banks by comparing their Balance Sheets and Income Statements. The insights gained out of this part will be relevant for the further sections. Followed by this, the banks will be compared in this essay using each one of the leadership sub criteria separately one after the other. Strengths and weaknesses of the six banks will be described, and each sub criterion will be analyzed in depth in order to draw meaningful implications. Finally, an overall comparative conclusion will name the relative "winners" and "losers" of this competition, pertaining to the EFQM criterion leadership.

Max Teichert The interest rate risk of banks

This book produces three main results. First, the interest rate risk from on-balance sheet term transformation of banks in Germany exceeds the euro area average and is bound to increase even further. Within Germany, savings banks and cooperative banks are particularly engaged. Second, supervisory interest rate shock scenarios are found to be increasingly detached both from the historic and the forecasted development of interest rates in Germany. This increasingly limits the informative content of mere exposure measures such as the Basel interest rate coefficient when used as risk measures. Third, there is a reasonable theoretical rationale and there is strong empirical evidence for banks' search for yield in interest rate risk, i.e. a negative link between the term spread and the taking of interest rate risk by banks. There is even a threshold of income below which banks' search for yield in interest rate risk surfaces openly.

Critics attribute that situation mainly to the German banking system being overbanked and overbranched. The purpose of this paper is to analyze that notion and to examine the German market and competitive landscape of the retail banking industry. The analysis contains four sections. The first section compares profitability ratios and indicators of German banks to their peers' performances. The study produces surprising results. Despite the ostensibly high branch density, Germany's banks operate very cost efficiently. Yet it is their inability to generate sufficient income that results in the sluggish net earnings.Consequently, in the second section, the authors examine the German banking system and portray and compare its peculiarities in order to find out if the income problems are inherent to the system. More than in any other country, public banks dominate the market and, together with the cooperative banks, do not follow the economic principle of profit maximization. Moreover, the public banks have...

Ulrich Thaidigsmann Increasing competition and changing customer behavior in the German financial services sector

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Within the last few years, dramatic changes took and still take place in the retail banking business. On the supply-side competition for cooperative banks is increasing due to various reasons. New competitors with different business models have entered the market. There is no doubt that they pose a serious threat to cooperative universal banks (which were the focus of this dissertation) and whose market share is declining constantly. Furthermore, „non-banks“ and „near-banks“ have to be considered in this respect, too, as these entities' business models are increasingly targeting customers of universal banks. On the demand side, changing customer behavior has accelerated transformation processes in recent years. An increased willingness to change suppliers can be noticed as consumers are placing more and more importance on price. A strong price awareness is changing market conditions in many business sectors in Germany. Decreasing customer loyalty forces universal banks to push sales activities and to intensify their personal relationship with the customer. The main objectives of this dissertation are the following: Work out a strategy within today’s typical structure as a universal bank. Identify key success factors and evaluate this strategy for its chances for success. Derive the consequences for the future business model of a cooperative bank. Determine the change steps necessary to strengthen the competitiveness. Furthermore, the prerequisites ...

For three decades, many studies related to the practices of procurement and their consequences on the performance of business were of attentiveness amongst many researchers. However, very few literature deals openly with the implementations of procurement impacting the performance of business. Thus, the technique that the author opts is to look into the firms' perception of innovation which is banks' performance for the customers as well as the importance of innovation concerning all stakeholders (shareholders, suppliers, internal customer and external customers) and its influence on business performance by conducting a case study, surveys and interviews with different stakeholders. The selected candidates for this study include banks' senior management and business departments (Personnel Banking, Wholesale Banking, Treasury & Investment Banking, Information Technology, Project Management, Operations, Strategy & Transformation and Procurement), banks' suppliers, banks' customers with direct or indirect contribution with procurement and banks' activities as a whole. A total of 284 respondents participated in the conducted research, 30 of these respondents from two banks were interviewed and 20 of these responses were used for the business case.
