In Ethiopia, especially in the current study area, the land available for natural grazing and forage production decreased due to the high demand of cropland to produce food for humans. Thus, the use of other alternative and relatively cheap feed sources such as agricultural and industrial by-products should be investigated to alleviate livestock feed shortage. Among potential agro-industrial by-products available for livestock in the present study area are noug seed cake, rice bran, and breweries dried grain and wheat bran. Rice production is currently booming in the study area and supposed to bring food security at least in for local level. While the rice grain is a helping hand for food security, the by-product of rice milling, rice bran, is also expected to make better the feed shortage as long as better utilization strategies are applied for such kind of crop residues through the integration of knowledge of smallholder producers.

The exploitation of traditional crops, which often are grown with low inputs, and are largely adapted to the climatic conditions of the developing countries, would be a step towards better resource utilization. Available literature from research on sweet potato focused more on tuber yields with little or no attention paid to foliage yield and quality. Unfortunately, Information about feeding value, extent and evolution of feeding practices of vine as a feed source is not much known due to lack of knowledge about the crop, and its use for animal feed. Furthermore, information on supplementation of livestock diets with sweet potato vines in Ethiopia is not sufficient. Therefore, the current study was designed to evaluate the effect of substituting sweet potato vines with concentrate mix at increasing levels on feed intake, growth performance and carcass traits of Sidama goats.

In India about 46% of total energy consumption is estimated to be met from various biomass resources, i.e. agricultural residues, animal dung, forest waste, firewood, etc. India produces a huge quantity of agricultural residues and a major part of it is consumed in traditional uses (such as fodder for cattle, domestic fuel for cooking, construction material for rural housing, industrial fuel for boilers, etc). The direct burning of agricultural residues in domestic as well as industrial applications is very inefficient. Moreover, transportation, storage and handling problems are also associated with its use. One of the approaches that is being actively pursued worldwide towards improved and efficient utilisation of agricultural and other biomass residues is their densification in order to produce pellets or briquettes. The briquetting of biomass improves its handling characteristics, increases the volumetric calorific value, reduces transportation costs and makes it available for a variety of applications.

Livestock rearing is one of the most important economic activities in the rural areas of India which provides supplementary income to most of the families dependent on agriculture. Apart from providing subsidiary income to the families, rearing of livestock such as cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, poultry etc. is a source of readily available high quality animal protein to the farmer's family. Livestock farms in rural and periurban farming systems vary widely in size and other characteristics like economic performance, type of herd maintained, feeding systems followed etc. This variation possess problem to identify target group based on which research and extension activities could be carried out. The need to identify the patterns in livestock farming thus is essential to understand the differences and target the research and extension activities in a more meaningful way. Many variables influence the patterns of livestock farming. Identifying the most important or crucial variables to structure the livestock farming in a homogeneous way is thus imperative. This study gives an account of the livestock production systems followed by rural and periurban farmers in South Gujarat, India

The book includes information based on a survey with farmers who had applied straw treatment with urea and fed to cattle in the Ethiopian highlands. Feeding urea treated straw increased milk production by 0.5 – 2 L/day and improved the body condition of the cattle. Farmers accepted the practice of straw treatment and were willing to continue. Most farmers realized that urea treated straw can replace hay in the dry and drought periods. However about half of the interviewed farmers failed to continue the practice. The low level of income, the misconception about the use of treated straw only in times of feed shortage and the expectation to be always supported by the government were the reasons for the failure. The book also contains an experimental result of urea treated straws on feeding lactating dairy cows. Urea treatment increased the nutrient content of teff and barley straw. It can replace hay in the diet of dairy cows. Feeding urea treated straws based diets enhanced the efficient utilization of crop residues and led to improved production performance of cattle. Farmers need efficient training, advice and follow up to introduce and adapt the technology of straw treatment.

Livestock and poultry industries produce meat, milk and egg, and also generate large volumes of waste water and solid wastes that could be beneficial or harmful to the environment. The waste products which includes livestock or poultry excreta and associated feed losses, beddings, wash -water and other such waste materials represent a valuable resource that if used wisely, can replace significant amounts of inorganic fertilizers Animal wastes in the form of manures are valuable sources of nutrients and organic matter for use in the maintenance of soil fertility and crop production. Studies with animals have shown that 55-90% of the nitrogen and phosphorus content of animal feed is excreted in faeces and urine Poor handling of animal waste generated from livestock industries over the years had posed serious public concern on environmental quality and biosecurity issues and had made direct disposal of livestock wastes on land socially less acceptable. The conversion of livestock waste to useful products that are environmentally friendly turn out to be the only alternative to the emerging environmental issues associated with indiscriminate livestock waste therefore creating awa

Livestock contribute to food, economy and sustainable agriculture. Livestock production systems differ widely in scale and intensity across the world and reflect differences in available resources (i.e. land, feed and water), socio-economics and tradition. We need to develop a good understanding of the differences among production systems if we are to be able to help poor livestock keepers take advantage of the rising demand for animal source foods, help livestock keepers adapt to a changing and more volatile climate; minimize the risk of disease emergence and spread, not only among livestock but also in people; and to help all livestock keepers mitigate greenhouse gas emissions via a wide range of options. Understanding how livestock fit into these systems, and how these systems may evolve in the future, is critical.

Ethiopia is believed to have the largest livestock population in Africa. This livestock sector has been contributing a considerable portion to national economy and 26% for agricultural GDP production and still promising to rally round the economic development of the country. The major limiting factor among others for livestock production is nutrition both in terms of quantity and quality. To curb the problem of feed availability, use of indigenous multipurpose fodder trees would be regarded as good option. Indigenous multipurpose fodder trees is a potentially expensive locally produced protein supplement for ruminants, particularly during the critical periods of the year when the quantity and quality of herbage is limited. Multipurpose fodder plant have high crude protein content, ranging from 10 to more than 25% on dry matter basis and may be considered as a more reliable feed resource of high quality to develop sustainable feeding systems and in increasing livestock productivity.

The study on the impact of HIV/AIDS on the livestock-producing communities of Uganda was carried out in Kashumba and Moyo sub counties. There was no clear data that supported the impact of HIV/AIDS on livestock producing communities on labour, decision-making, grazing and watering time and factors that aggravated its effects. Data were collected using semi-structured questionnaire, focus group discussion, observation guides and review of secondary data. The study showed that there was reduction in the availability of labour for grazing and watering livestock in both Moyo and Kashumba; There was shift in decision-making and implementation from ailing household heads to selected household members. There was significant negative changes in livestock grazing and sale of livestock products in households affected by HIV/AIDS compared to those non affected. Furthermore, there was reduction in grazing and watering time for livestock activities. It was observed that daily animal source foods reduced in the affected households. The study recommended that HIV/AIDS mitigation measures be intergrated in the livestock sector plans that will create HIV/AIDS competent communities in Uganda.

Results presented in this book showed that mutating Ile41 and Ala42 to hydrophilic residues increases solubility, while mutating the same residues to hydrophobic residues enhances the aggregation propensity. This result suggests that the enhanced aggregation propensity of Abeta42 relative to Abeta40 results from the hydrophobic nature of Ile41 and Ala42 residues (Chapter 2). Fusions of GFP to Abeta mutants containing 8~12 mutations of hydrophobic residues to other hydrophobic residues produced white phenotypes, suggesting that generic hydrophobicity (rather than specific nonpolar side chains) at key positions is sufficient to promote aggregation of Abeta42 (Chapter 3). Sequence analysis of Abeta40 mutants with enhanced aggregation propensities indicated that an overall increase in hydrophobicity caused increased aggregation (Chapter 4). Finally, a library of compounds was screened using the Abeta-GFP fusion to identify drug leads that inhibit aggregation of Abeta (Chapter 5). The inhibitory activities of the molecules screened using the Abeta-GFP fusion were confirmed using a series of biophysical techniques.

Heavy metal contamination of wastewaters is a growing concern now a days. Conventional biological treatment of industrial discharges cannot be a success unless these metals of concern are removed prior to secondary treatment. Hence there is a dire need to devise a treatment which not only is efficient but also cost effective. Biosorption proved to be a promising alternative among many treatment technologies for removing heavy metals from wastewater. Agricultural residues being waste of farms and agricultural land can be potential adsorbents for removing these metals of concern. This book aimed the investigation of copper and lead removal using agricultural residues like rice husk and wheat straw.

The uncontrolled and unrestricted use of antimicrobials may lead to the accumulation of undesirable drug residues in the treated animals and their products. In the poultry industry of many developing countries such as Kenya there is lack of affordable, easy to perform antibiotic residues screening methods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of Bacillus cereus and Bacillus subtilis as test organisms for assay of tetracycline and beta-lactam antibiotics in chicken meat. Microbiological detection was achieved by agar well diffusion. Results showed that oxytetracycline (OTC) and penicillin G (PEN G) were reliably detected below the maximum residue limits (MRLs), of 50ng/g in both liver and kidney for PEN G and 600ng/g in liver and 1200ng/g in kidney for OTC, by the two bacterial species. B. cereus and B. subtilis can therefore be used effectively for routine screening for residues of PEN G and OTC in chicken kidney and liver tissues. The screening test is technically simple and can be carried out in most laboratories in both the developed and developing countries.

Livestock products comprise an important component of agricultural production in the Nile River Basin, which supports more than 200 million lives in its riparian countries where most of them are found in poverty. Despite this fact, it has largely been ignored in water management for food security. Livestock production interacts with the water resources directly or indirectly and the interaction can be positive or negative depending on the type of production. Evidences suggest that there is a huge knowledge gap and much misinformation about livestock's use of and impact on water resources. This book tries to answer the questions that what type of interaction exists in the Nile River Basin and how much is the productivity of the water for livestock production. This book should be useful for any level researchers and professionals in environment, livestock, agriculture and similar fields.

From this study it can be concluded that 1) Application of recycled plant materials especially banana residues in the compost form is important to reducing the problem of increasing agricultural residues. 2) Organic materials must be decomposed firstly to release the nutrient elements. So that it must be applied early with enough time to decomposition. 3) Adding compost to sandy soils under arid and semi arid conditions reduce water stress on the crop and this considers one of the most striking results. 4) Banana compost is a serious source of balanced essential elements. 5)Plants resistance to water stress was increased by compost addition.6) Compost application had a promising effect on reducing concentrations of heavy metals in plant tissues compared to chemical fertilizers.

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) also known as peanut and earthnut, is an important oilseed crop largely grown by resource poor smallholder farmers under rainfed conditions. These farmers employ different tillage practices in the production of the crop. Many farmers perform tillage operations without being aware of the effect of these operations on soil physical properties and crop responses. It is carried out mainly to loosen the upper layer of soil, to mix the soil with fertilizer and organic residues, to control weeds, and to create a suitable seedbed for germination and plant growth. The theme of nutrient management in integrated way for increasing the soil fertility is gaining ground throughout the world in recent years due to high cost of fertilizer and reduced availability of organic manures. Modern tillage and integrated nutrient management practices may affect soil fertility and productivity of groundnut due to different soil conditions created and fulfills the nutrient requirement of crop. The book contains the information on the effect of tillage and integrated nutrient management practices on soil fertility and productivity of groundnut under rainfed conditions.

India has a vast reservoir of livestock of considerable genetic diversities. The productivity of the livestock is greatly dependent on their health status and it is indeed a challenging task to provide health care to such a gigantic population of our livestock. In order to increase the milk production from cattle a large scale cross breeding programmes with exotic germplasm has been started which has led to higher milk production along with the emergence of various diseases in our livestock, since the crossbred populations are more susceptible to various diseases in tropical climate of our country. There are various types of diseases which cause huge economic losses in dairy sector. Among them one of the important diseases is repeat breeding. Repeat breeding may occur due to number of cause such as hormonal deficiency, nutrient deficiency, microbial infection etc.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Environmental Sciences, , language: English, abstract: Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) is one of the largest carnivores of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS). Black bear-human conflict is a major concern throughout the eastern Himalayas and particularly in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal state. A study was undertaken to assess the Black bear-Human conflicts using Questionnaire surveys within the fringe villages of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS), West Bengal during the period June-July 2013 by applying snowball-sampling technique. The black bear-human conflicts recorded were in three forms: crop raiding, livestock predation, human attacks and sometimes even death of humans. Crop damage was observed to be the most common type of conflict as reported by more than 80% of the respondents. The extent of crop damage was intense in the month of June-September, mainly concentrated along forest boundary areas which can be related to the cropping pattern and pre-hibernation period of black bears. Crop damage and livestock damage was estimated for the areas surveyed. The traditional methods adopted by the villagers to scare or chase off bear included, shouting, drumming empty tin, Bamboo netted fencing , keeping guard dogs and handmade fire mashals (Pultho). However these methods are hardly effective because their applicability lies when the villagers know about the presence of bears in their fields, which is very rare as...

The rainfed agro ecosystem supports 40 per cent of the human and 65 per cent of the livestock population, provides 44 per cent of food requirement and it has played and continues to play a critical role in Indian agriculture (Singh et al., 2004). In such areas crop production becomes relatively difficult as it mainly depends upon the intensity and frequency of rainfall. Mixed crop livestock farming has been adopted by the farmers in these areas through generations of experience. Dairy production has become an important component of rural development programmes in the rainfed areas of India, and is considered as an instrument for socioeconomic change to improve income and quality of life. Thus an attempt has been made here to analyse, the cost of milk production, resource use efficiency and constraints faced by dairy farmers in vidarbha region of India.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 7.31, Junagadh Agricultural University (College of Agriculture), course: Farm Power and Machinery, language: English, abstract: It is seen that large quantities of agricultural crop residues are being wasted. A major disadvantage of most recyclable waste is their bulk i.e. it requires a large space for accommodation. It has been observed by bio-scientists that if the waste is burnt, this affects the soil microflora, results in loss of nitrogen and organic matter. Most bulky residues need some type of pre-incorporated physical processing or shredding to facilitate their rapid decomposition and mixing with the soil. It has been an established fact that finer particles (4 to 5 cm) decompose faster as compared to large particles. Shredder is ideal for disposal of course leaves, garden and agricultural wastes. Such as twinges, small branches, flower stalks straw, tree pruning etc. This scientific way returns the nutrients back to the soil in natural ways. Therefore the efforts must be concentrated towards effective utilization of all the wastes.Serious efforts in this direction provide rich dividends to the farmers as well as solve the disposal problems, minimize pollution effects, open up evens for starting rural industries and self-employment or gainful employment for rural youth. It is more relevant way to avoid migration of youth from villages to the urban area in search of employment.Despite their ...

Generally, livestock production is seen as a backbone of agriculture all over the world. In this respect, the ruminant livestock production system (cattle, sheep and goats) plays a key role and considered as an activity with considerable social and economical importance. Furthermore the livestock sector is the most demanding sector in terms of costs of meeting the new hygienic, environmental, animal welfare and food safety standards. Nowadays native animal genetic resources are hardly found in modern industrial dairy and meat production. Commercial breeding focuses on high output of milk or rapid growing of the animals to minimize costs of holding animals and maximize efforts. Economically, it is useful to produce as much as possible with the smallest possible effort. But how reasonable and useful can this be for a region that cannot afford raising or feeding these high productive animals in an issue that should be addressed and studied deeply. The material in this book has been divided in five chapters: Chapter I, covers the general background about ruminant production in Kosova. Chapter II deals with cattle genetic resources in Kosova, including indigenous breed and its crosse

Aubergine is an important dietary vegetable grown all over the country. The crop is subjected to high degree of instability in production, mainly on account of losses caused by different insect pests at different stages of the crop. Meghalaya (part of North Eastern Himalayas)is highly weather dynamic which are most conducive for development of different insect species and their natural enemies. Recently it has been observed that minor pests are becoming major in some commercial crops. Therefore, periodical surveillance may help to recognize the relative economic importance of different pests on that crop. Nearly 25.82 to 92.50% damage is attributed due to shoot and fruit borer. Management of this notorious pest by using conventional insecticides and synthetic pyrethroids has been found effective. However, indiscriminate use of insecticides has resulted in development of resistance, environmental pollution,bio-accumulation and bio-magnifications of toxic residues which leads to ecological imbalance. Considering these entire quandaries and to keep uncontaminated biodiversity, the study was conducted to evaluate some Eco-friendly insecticides as well as pheromone for their bio-efficacy.
