They can be divided in first generation and second generation biofuels. First generation biofuels have an inefficient CO2 emissions to output ratio. In fact they currently need mineral-oil for their production. Second generation biofuels have nearly the same energy efficiency with much lower environmental damages. Producing a second generation biofuel, for example from algae, most of the needed process energy can be produced by the process itself. CO2 outputs will be recycled by using it as an input product. To get a high biofuel yield from algae, light availability and intensity must be optimized to the current algae-species. Therefore biofuel reactors need to be optimized for a homogeneous light saturation. To estimate the innovation potential of biofuels from algae nine different assessment techniques where used. The result is, that there is no main method for biofuel production from algae on an industrial scale. It depends on consumer requirements, location and the technology.

Fossil fuel accounts the highest percent of primary energy consumption and used extensively for transport and other purposes since 1859. Continued use of fossil fuel are recognized as unsustainable because of depleting world reserves and the green house gas emissions associated with their use. Therefore, study on microalgal biofuel was performed to evaluate the potential of algal biomass as biofuel resources. Also, it is focused on current methods for culturing, harvesting and extracting technology of microalgal biomass and economic, energetic and environmental impact of biodiesel production. Calculation of total energy yield per hectare per year with oil content of 30% dry weight microalgae was calculated with the values obtained from literature. Also, production of biodiesel per hectare per year was calculated and compared with other studies. Results obtained in our study showed similar pattern with other study. From our study, we found that total oil yield from algal biomass is much higher than terrestrial plants and therefore, microalgae have the potential to completely replace transportation petrol fuel.

Renewable energy sources and biofuel, including biodiesel, have been gaining increasing attention recently as a replacement for fossil fuels. However, their implementation in the general market depends on making these fuels more competitive. A convenient way to lower the cost of biofuel is to use the by-products as a potential source of energy, rather than treating them as waste. The industrial conversion of renewable resources into useful compounds, namely bio-based materials, has been receiving much attention from the environmental point of view. The crude glycerol from biodiesel production represents an abundant and inexpensive carbon source. Glycerol is yielded at about 10% as a by-product during the process of biodiesel production. The global biodiesel market is estimated to reach 39 billion gallons by 2020, growing at an average annual growth of 42%. Therefore, microbial conversion of raw glycerol into value added fermented products were investigated aiming to facilitate the utilization of waste glycerol.

The importance of renewable fuel production has become significant in terms of supplying energy carriers for the transportation sector and storing electricity overflows from intermittent sources. The purpose of this book is to address, model and assess economics of methanol production schemes from a biogas origin. It is envisioned that the establishment of this biomass-to-liquid process will enhance biogas production. The enhancement is based on creating an alternative utilization method of biogas than combustion for CHP. The benefits from the establishment are projected to be a reduction in GHG-emissions from livestock waste and a biofuel contributor to renewable liquid energy carriers. A farm and a central large scale scenario are investigated. The production scheme assessed is based on biogas from degassed bio-waste and a biogas reforming technology. A Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell is adapted to the process schemes, partly to improve composition of reactants for methanol synthesis and to act as a peak shaving mechanism for the electricity overflows. A heat integration and economic assessment is established and subjected to a cost-optimization estimating methanol production prices.

Most foreign investors, who intend to buy land for the biofuel production take advantage of the lack of proper property rights in several African countries. Therefore, many of the rural poor, who depend on land for their living, suffer from expulsion or dispossession. In summary, it can be said that the formalization of land titles only serves the poor, when secondary rights as for example for women, herders or migrants, are respected by the state or the foreign investors when allocating, buying or leasing land. In addition, during the processes of allocating, buying or leasing land, the state as well as the foreign investor should give whole local communities (not only local elites) the possibility to negotiate over the future use of the land they tilled for years. From the four land tenure reforms outlined, where land based wealth and power transfers occurs, the two best possible solutions, which serve the poor, would be the redistribution and the distribution of land. The understanding of the fluid flow behavior in a reservoir is an essential parameter for maximum oil and gas production and a high recovery factor. This study should visualize the effect of geological structures on reservoir fluid flow. Based on real geological data from a field trip to the deep marine Ainsa Basin in Spain, a reservoir model was created. The collected data and mathematical equations were used to establish rock properties for the simulation runs. Based on the results of the runs, the difference in recovery factors and production rates between a reservoir pressure production and a production below the pore pressure with artificial methods such as water injection were displayed and discussed.

Livestock products comprise an important component of agricultural production in the Nile River Basin, which supports more than 200 million lives in its riparian countries where most of them are found in poverty. Despite this fact, it has largely been ignored in water management for food security. Livestock production interacts with the water resources directly or indirectly and the interaction can be positive or negative depending on the type of production. Evidences suggest that there is a huge knowledge gap and much misinformation about livestock's use of and impact on water resources. This book tries to answer the questions that what type of interaction exists in the Nile River Basin and how much is the productivity of the water for livestock production.
