The study focuses on the role and function of Israel in postmodern Jewish American literature. Hence, the work is based on the thesis that the existence of a Jewish State in the Middle East has developed into a key motive for postmodern Jewish American literature. The role of a Jewish State is examined in particular with regards to questions of Jewish American identity, as well as with regards to related questions of ambivalent attitudes and political positions towards Israel in general and Jewish American identity in particular. A comparison of Saul Bellow's 'To Jerusalem and Back' and Philip Roth's 'Operation Shylock: A Confession' provides a basis for the analysis of the above stated assumptions.

Transnational Traditions. New Perspectives on American Jewish History

Despite being the archetypal diasporic people, modern Jews have most often been studied as citizens and subjects of single nation states and empires—as American, Polish, Russian, or German Jews. This national approach is especially striking considering the renewed interest among scholars in global and transnational influences on the modern world. Editors Ava F. Kahn and Adam D. Mendelsohn offer a new approach in Transnational Traditions: New Perspectives on American Jewish History as contributors use transnational and comparative methodologies to place American Jewry into a broader context of cultural, commercial, and social exchange with Jews in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and South America. In examining patterns that cross national boundaries, contributors offer new ways of understanding the development of American Jewish life. The diverse chapters, written by leading scholars, reflect on episodes of continuity and contact between Jews in America and world Jewry over the past two centuries. Individual case studies cover a range of themes including migration, international trade, finance, cultural interchange, acculturation, and memory and commemoration. Overall, this volume will expose readers to the variety and complexity of transnational experiences and encounters within American Jewish history. Accessible to students and scholars alike, Transnational Traditions will be appropriate as a classroom text for courses on modern Jewish, ethnic, immigr...

Montague Glass was an early-twentieth-century American humorist and attorney who specialized in humorous stories based on New York City's garment trade. As the garment industry in New York at this time was primarily run by Jewish immigrants, much of Glass's humor derived from their nature and characters. The first stories were published as Potash and Perlmutter in 1910, and the adventures continued in 1911 with Abe and Mawruss -- Potash and Permutter, respectively. Glass also adapted his tales into Broadway plays that were popularly-received, and which enjoyed several revivals. A Jewish immigrant born in Manchester, England in 1877, Glass's father was a fabric manufacturer, which gave him knowledge of the garment industry. Glass's portrayals of Abe and Mawruss ("Morris") were intended to soften the negative stereotypes of Jewish immigrants in the United States, by offering their adventures and personalities with great humor. Even at the time, some Jewish readers objected to the stereotypes portrayed in the books, but the Jewish slang and culture Glass portrayed has entered our cultural memories. You would want to read a funny book? You should read this Abe and Mawruss!

This is the first in-depth biography of Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869), the foremost American Jewish woman of the nineteenth century. Perhaps the best-known member of the prominent Gratz family of Philadelphia, she was a fervent patriot, a profoundly religious woman, and a widely known activist for poor women. She devoted her life to confronting and resolving the personal challenges she faced as a Jew and as a female member of a prosperous family. In using hundreds of Gratz's own letters in her research, Dianne Ashton reveals Gratz's own blend of Jewish and American values and explores the significance of her work.Informed by her American and Jewish ideas, values, and attitudes, Gratz created and managed a variety of municipal and Jewish institutions for charity and education, including America's first independent Jewish women's charitable society, the first Jewish Sunday school, and the first American Jewish foster home. Through her commitment to establishing charitable resources for women, promoting Judaism in a Christian society, and advancing women's roles in Jewish life, Gratz shaped a Jewish arm of what has been called America's largely Protestant "benevolentempire."Influenced by the religious and political transformations taking place nationally and locally, Gratz matured into a social visionary whose dreams for American Jewish life far surpassed the realities she saw around her. She believed that Judaism was advanced by the founding of the F...

Rachel Kranson Ambivalent Embrace. Jewish Upward Mobility in Postwar America

This new cultural history of Jewish life and identity in the United States after World War II focuses on the process of upward mobility. Rachel Kranson challenges the common notion that most American Jews unambivalently celebrated their generally strong growth in economic status and social acceptance during the booming postwar era. In fact, a significant number of Jewish religious, artistic, and intellectual leaders worried about the ascent of large numbers of Jews into the American middle class. Kranson reveals that many Jews were deeply concerned that their lives—affected by rapidly changing political pressures, gender roles, and religious practices—were becoming dangerously disconnected from authentic Jewish values. She uncovers how Jewish leaders delivered jeremiads that warned affluent Jews of hypocrisy and associated "good" Jews with poverty, even at times romanticizing life in America's immigrant slums and Europe's impoverished shtetls. Jewish leaders, while not trying to hinder economic development, thus cemented an ongoing identification with the Jewish heritage of poverty and marginality as a crucial element in an American Jewish ethos.

Over the last seventy years, memories and narratives of the Holocaust have played a significant role in constructing Jewish communities. The author explores one field where these narratives are disseminated: Holocaust pedagogy in Jewish schools in Melbourne and New York. Bringing together a diverse range of critical approaches, including memory studies, gender studies, diaspora theory, and settler colonial studies, Anxious Histories complicates the stories being told about the Holocaust in these Jewish schools and their broader communities. It demonstrates that an anxious thread runs throughout these historical narratives, as the pedagogy negotiates feelings of simultaneous belonging and not-belonging in the West and in Zionism. In locating that anxiety, the possibilities and the limitations of narrating histories of the Holocaust are opened up once again for analysis, critique, discussion, and development.

The Edward Lewis Wallant Award was founded by the family of Dr. Irving and Fran Waltman in 1963 and is supported by the University of Hartford’s Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies. It is given annually to an American writer, preferably early in his or her career, whose fiction is considered significant for American Jews. In The New Diaspora: The Changing Landscape of American Jewish Fiction, editors Victoria Aarons, Avinoam J. Patt, and Mark Shechner, who have all served as judges for the award, present vital, original, and wide-ranging fiction by writers whose work has been considered or selected for the award. The resulting collection highlights the exemplary place of the Wallant Award in Jewish literature. With a mix of stories and novel chapters, The New Diaspora reprints selections of short fiction from such well-known writers as Rebecca Goldstein, Nathan Englander, Jonathan Safran Foer, Dara Horn, and Julie Orringer. The first half of the anthology presents pieces by winners of the Wallant award, focusing on the best work of recent winners. The New Diaspora’s second half reflects the evolving landscape of American Jewish fiction over the last fifty years, as many authors working in America are not American by birth, and their fiction has become more experimental in nature. Pieces in this section represent authors with roots all over the world—including Russia (Maxim Shrayer, Nadia Kalman, and Lara Vapnyar), Latvia (David Bezmozgis), South Africa (Tony Eprile), ...

In Comparative Perspectives on Judaisms and Jewish Identities author Stephen Sharot uses his work published in journals and collected volumes over the past thirty-five years to examine a range of Jewish communities across both time and geography. Sharot’s sociological analyses consider religious developments and identities in diverse Jewish communities from Imperial China and Renaissance Italy to contemporary Israel and the United States. As Sharot examines these groups, other religions enter into the discussion as well, not only as major elements in the environments of Jewish communities but also with respect to certain religious phenomena that too have been present in Judaism. The book is divided into four parts: the first compares religious developments in pre-modern and early modern Jewish communities; the second focuses on Jewish religious movements, especially messianic-millennial and antinomian, in the pre-modern and early modern period; the third examines Jewish religious and ethnic identities in the modern period; and the fourth relates developments in Judaism in the modern period to theoretical debates on secularization, fundamentalism, and public religion in the sociology of religion. The afterword sums up the findings of the previous sections and compares the boundaries and boundary shifts among Jewish communities. As the plural "Judaisms" in the title indicates, Sharot discusses extensive differences in the religious characteristics between Jewish communiti...

Jewish farming in New Jersey, part of the experiment to return Jews to the land, represents more than 100-organized experiments during the Great Migration (1881-1914). Most of its successes are found in New Jersey, then known as the Garden State. Led by the international Jewish community, Russian Jews poured out of Russia. The Jewish Colonization Association, established by German Baron Maurice de Hirsch, initially paved the way for numerous Jewish agricultural to locate in New Jersey where marketing transportation and proximity to markets existed. This account explores the scores of settlements in New Jersey, from the sandy soils of South Jersey, top the poultry farming in Central Jersey to the cattle farming in Flemington's Western Jersey. Drawing on rare sources, this tale delves into the transformation of urban European Jews with little agricultural experience to farmers toiling American soil. This study reveals why Jewish farmers dominated the poultry market and why they left. Arthur L. Finkle, writer, educator and historian traces this nineteenth and twentieth century odyssey.

Sandy Koufax, Lenny Bruce, Bob Dylan, and Barbra Streisand first came to public attention in the early 1960s, a period Kaufman identifies as historically ripe for American Jews to reexamine their (Jewish) identities. All four achieved extraordinary success in their respective fields and became celebrities within an American context, while at the same time they were clearly identifiable as Jews - although they were perceived to be Jewish in very different ways. Kaufman investigates these celebrities' rise to fame, the specific brand of Jewishness each one represented, and how their fans and the public at large perceived their ethnic identity as Jews. Situating Koufax, Bruce, Dylan, and Streisand within the larger history of American Jewish celebrity, Kaufman argues that the four early 1960s figures represent a turning point between celebrity Jews of the past - such as Hank Greenberg, Groucho Marx, Irving Berlin, and Fanny Brice - and those of the present, such as Jon Stewart, Matisyahu, and Natalie Portman. Providing an entry into Jewish celebrity studies, this lively narrative explores the intersection between popular celebrity and Jewish identity and thereby examines the cultural construction of Jewishness in the latter half of the twentieth century.

Tower Power presents an engaging series of discussions in dialogue on one of the first truly interdisciplinary and historically informed studies of the American skyscraper and September 11. Devrim F. Kilicer's book offers a critical inspection of the ways in which "the center of the center," the vertical temenos of the United States, New York City, is comprehended as the place for the American Dream of material success with its overwhelming bundle of skyscrapers. The author contends that it is only by approaching the phenomenon of September 11 in the context of iconic American skyscrapers that we can truly understand the ways September 11 has been canonized and imbued with a sacred character. At the same time, her study allows September 11 to inform our understanding of the skyscraper as the essential American architectural form. She provides a socio-psychoanalytic lens through the works of psychoanalysts Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan together with social theorists Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu in understanding why New York City has been expanding vertically and what this architectonic verticality tells us about the American psyche.

Beyond the walls of their synagogues, Jewish adults are creating religious meaning in new and diverse ways in a range of unconventional sites. In Back to School, authors Alex Pomson and Randal F. Schnoor argue that the Jewish day school serves as one such site by bringing adults and children together for education, meeting, study, and worship-like ceremonies. Pomson and Schnoor suggest that day school functions as a locus of Jewish identity akin to the Jewish streets or neighborhoods that existed in many major North American cities in the first half of the twentieth century.Back to School began as an ethnographic study of the Paul Penna Downtown Jewish Day School (DJDS) in Toronto, a private, religiously pluralistic day school that balances its Jewish curriculum with general studies. Drawing on a longitudinal study at DJDS, and against the backdrop of a comparative study of two other Toronto day schools as well as four day schools from the U.S. Midwest, Pomson and Schnoor argue that when parents choose Jewish schools for their children they look for institutions that satisfy not only their children’s academic and emotional needs but also their own social and personal concerns as Jewish adults. The authors found an uncommon degree of involvement and engagement on the part of the parents, as genuine friendships and camaraderie blossomed between parents, faculty, and administrators. In addition, the authors discovered that parents who considered themselves secular Jews were intr...

It examines how Vienna, the city that stood at the center of Jewish life in the Austrian Empire and later the Austrian nation, assumed a special significance in the imaginations of Jewish writers as a space and an idea. The author focuses on the special relationship between Austrian-Jewish writers and the city to reveal a century-long pattern of living in tension with the city, experiencing simultaneously acceptance and exclusion, feeling "unheimlich heimisch" (eerily at home) in Vienna.

During the American Revolution over 3,000 persons of African descent were promised freedom by the British if they would desert their American rebel masters and serve the loyalist cause. Those who responded to this promise found refuge in New York. In 1783, after Britain lost the war, they were evacuated to Nova Scotia, where for a decade they were treated as cheap labor by the white loyalists. In 1792 they were finally offered a new home in West Africa; over 1,200 responded and became the founders of Freetown in Sierra Leone. This history follows ten of these freed slaves from their escape from masters in Virginia and the Carolinas to their sojourn in wartime New York, their evacuation to Nova Scotia and finally their exodus to Freetown, where they struggled for another decade for not only freedom and dignity but the right to worship as they choose, make an honest living, and govern themselves.

Ferziger argues in Beyond Sectarianism: The Realignment of American Orthodox Judaism that one of Liebman’s principal definitions needs to be updated. While Liebman proposed that the “committed Orthodox” —observant rather than nominally affiliated—could be divided into two main streams: “church,” or Modern Orthodoxy, and “sectarian,” or Haredi Orthodoxy, Ferziger traces a narrowing of the gap between them and ultimately a realignment of American Orthodox Judaism. Ferziger shows that significant elements within Haredi Orthodoxy have abandoned certain strict and seemingly uncontested norms. He begins by offering fresh insight into the division between the American sectarian Orthodox and Modern Orthodox streams that developed in the early twentieth century and highlights New York’s Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun as a pioneering Modern Orthodox synagogue. Ferziger also considers the nuances of American Orthodoxy as reflected in Soviet Jewish activism during the 1960s and early 1970s and educational trips to Poland taken by American Orthodox young adults studying in Israel, and explores the responses of prominent rabbinical authorities to Orthodox feminism and its c...

Leonard Cohen boldly traces the youth and early manhood of Lawrence Breavman, only son of a Jewish Montreal family. For Breavman, ife is a quest for beauty and truth, a kaleidoscope of colours and sensations fed through the high-speed projector of youth: the half-understood death of his father; the adult games of love and war, fantasy and pain; his secret experiments with hypnotism; the absorbing wanders through Montreal in half-light with beloved confidant Krantz. After achieving literary fame as a college student, Breavman flees to New York. And, although he has loved the bodies of many women, it is only in the arms of Shell that he discovers the potent totality of love and its demands. Only then is he able to grasp the sacrifices he must make.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject History - Miscellaneous, grade: A, Juniata College, language: English, abstract: In early August 1914, the first days of World War I, Germany's attention was focused on the United States. The world's biggest economic power had so far remained neutral and was therefore the field of the "Krieg der Geiste" (War of Minds). England tried to push the United States into the war against the Central Powers and Germany tried to keep the United States out of the war and worked through diplomatic efforts to ensure that the US stayed completely neutral. The German Empire saw Americans of the Jewish faith as major allies in this effort. Many of these American Jews were powerful financiers, including immigrants from both Germany and Russia. The German Empire hoped that it had the support of the highly influential Jewish bankers as well as of many Jewish -American voters. The sources on which the research is based are former works of the German propaganda efforts in the United States, material from the New York Times and accounts of contemporary people. This research will show how the German Empire tried to win and keep the favor of these particular groups of Americans and why they hoped that the American Jews were on their side, what measures German Jews made to achieve this goal and why it ultimately failed.

Nowhere else have Jews contributed so massively and consequentially to the general culture than in Germany. From Mendelssohn to Marx, from Freud to Einstein, Jewish contributions to secular German thought have been both wide-ranging in scope and profound in their impact. But how are these intellectual innovations contributions to European Jewish culture? How are they to be defined as Jewish? Scott Spector argues for a return to the actual subjects of German-Jewish history as a way to understand them and their worlds. By engaging deeply with the individual as well as with the literary or philosophical character of the text, Spector offers a fresh view of the presumed contradictions, uncertainties, and paradoxes that underlie the project of Jewish participation in culture. Spector forges a new definition of what modernist creativity means in our understanding of German-Jewish culture.

After hitchhiking from Paris to Jerusalem, Jordan in 1967, Iris Keltz had to wait three days for permission to cross a U.N. checkpoint into Jerusalem, Israel. That was enough time for this young Jewish woman from New York to meet a Palestinian poet, musician, and world traveler. After a whirlwind courtship of less than three weeks, they married and were planning their honeymoon when the Six Day War broke out. The day Israeli soldiers barged into the basement apartment where the newlyweds had found sanctuary with other Palestinians, Iris was frozen with fear. She meant to cry out, “I’m Jewish, American and these are my friends.” Her silence that day compelled her to write this book.

In his work, Rabbi Newman documents the struggle between Christianity and Judaism. The Rabbi also includes information on Jewish Influence in fomenting the Protestant revolt against the Catholic Church, which led to the freeing of Jews from Church strictures and mainstreaming them into the political and social life of Christendom, particularly in Protestant countries.Newman even takes up the topic of Jewish influence in Puritan New England. All in all, this is an important book for those wishing to understand the mutual antipathies which have beset Christians and Jews.

Louis Richard Baumgaertner Tales of a New York Yankee. Life in New York City and the Border States in the 20th Century

Lou Baumgaertner was born and bred in New York City, and although he also lived amongst the Border States, and even in the South, he was a New York Yankee to his dying day. Part of that, of course, could be attributed to his being a die-hard fan of the best baseball team in the world, the New York Yankees. But being a New York Yankee also meant so much more … New Yorkers tend to be different from those who live in other regions, and frequently are easily recognized by others as either being “different”, or more precisely as being “from New York”. Sometimes that recognition is not accompanied by a warm feeling of acceptance. But we New Yorkers know we are different. We have our own accent – although those who live in New York City might argue it’s all the others who have accents … we speak perfectly normally. Because we live in a Big City, we talk fast, we seem brusque, and we sometimes appear to lack patience with others. We don’t mean to be rude, but the demands of surviving in a Big City (almost any Big City) require a no-nonsense attitude to life to avoid being run over by those around us. But once you get to know us, we’re pretty nice people. We New Yorkers are proud of ourselves, and of our city, and we have a right to be. It may not be the Capital of the Country, but many New Yorkers often think of it as such … to a true New Yorker, there is only one New York City! And New York City is the Business and Cultural Capital of the Country! This ubiquitous sentiment is why Ne...

Jews have been well represented in the cinema industry from the beginning of the film era: behind the screen, as producers, distributors, directors, script-writers, composers, set designers; and on the screen, as Jewish actors and as named Jewish characters in the film's plot. Some of these characters are fictional; others, ranging from Rabbi Loew of Prague to Ferdinand Lassalle and Alfred Dreyfus, have a historic original. This book examines how a variety of German and Austrian films treat aspects of Jewish life, at home and in the synagogue, and Jewish interaction with fellow Jews in different cultural environments; conflicts and accommodations between Jews and non-Jews at various times, ranging from the medieval to the contemporary. The author, one of the best known scholars in film history, theory and criticism, offers the reader a rich panorama of the many Jews involved in all spheres of the cinema and who, as the author reminds us repeatedly, together with their non-Jewish contemporaries, created a great industry and new forms of art.S. S. Prawer is a Fellow of The Queen's College, Oxford, the British Academy, and the German Academy of Language and Literature.
