Contemporary Fiction and the Fairy Tale

Recent decades have witnessed a renaissance of interest in the fairy tale, not least among writers of fiction. In Contemporary Fiction and the Fairy Tale, editor Stephen Benson argues that fairy tales are one of the key influences on fiction of the past thirty years and also continue to shape literary trends in the present. Contributors detail the use of fairy tales both as inspiration and blueprint and explore the results of juxtaposing fairy tales and contemporary fiction. At the heart of this collection, seven leading scholars focus on authors whose work is heavily informed and transformed by fairy tales: Robert Coover, A. S. Byatt, Margaret Atwood, Angela Carter, and Salman Rushdie. In addition to investigating the work of this so-called fairy-tale generation, Contemporary Fiction and the Fairy Tale provides a survey of the body of theoretical writing surrounding these authors, both from within literary studies and from fairy-tale studies itself. Contributors present an overview of critical positions, considered here in relation to the work of Jeanette Winterson and of Nalo Hopkinson, suggesting further avenues for research.Contemporary Fiction and the Fairy Tale offers the first detailed and comprehensive account of the key authors working in this emerging genre. Students and teachers of fiction, folklore, and fairy-tale studies will appreciate this insightful volume.

Vanessa Joosen Critical and Creative Perspectives on Fairy Tales. An Intertextual Dialogue Between Fairy-Tale Scholarship and Postmodern Retellings

In Critical and Creative Perspectives on Fairy Tales: An Intertextual Dialogue between Fairy-Tale Scholarship and Postmodern Retellings Vanessa Joosen broadens the traditional concept of intertextuality to include academic texts. With three key texts from the 1970s at the center of her discussion-Marcia K. Lieberman's "Some Day My Prince Will Come," Bruno Bettelheim's The Uses of Enchantment, and Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar's The Madwoman in the Attic-Joosen connects the critical views expressed in these feminist and psychoanalytic interpretations with fictional fairy-tale retellings and illustrations that have been published in Dutch, English, and German since the 1970s.While readers may not automatically connect fairy-tale retellings and criticism, Joosen argues that they represent a similar conviction to understand, interpret, criticize, and experiment with the original tale. Moving through her three critical focus texts in chronological order, Joosen addresses fairy-tale retellings in prose, poetry, and pictures, including revisions of "Snow White," "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," "Hansel and Gretel," "Little Red Riding Hood," and "Beauty and the Beast." Authors and illustrators whose work is discussed include Paul Biegel, Anthony Browne, Gillian Cross, Emma Donoghue, Iring Fetscher, Adèle Geras, Otto Gmelin, Wim Hofman, Anne Provoost, Anne Sexton, Barbara Walker, and Jane Yolen.Joosen argues that ret...

Conny Eisfeld How Fairy Tales live happily ever after. (Analyzing) The art of adapting Fairy Tales

What happened to the classic fairy tale? Do we still read the 'old and dusty tales' of wonder to our children or would we rather take them to the cinema? The fairy tale boom has reached Hollywood where popular tales are currently transformed into entertainment movies.Makers of films and TV series have become the storytellers of the digital age - a transition that frequently leads to discussions about how these new forms limit or contribute to the further development and preservation of the traditional fairy tale. But what exactly is a traditional fairy tale? The book follows the history of the tale, how it has been changing colors and how it has been adapting and surviving for centuries. The main focus lies on the literary and multi-medial analysis of two popular fairy tales: Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood, which have not only been adapted to the screen recently but have been repeatedly altered throughout the centuries.Follow the journey of the fairy tale from its most basic form, i.e. oral storytelling, to a written and illustrated commitment that shaped the general image of fairy tales for forthcoming generations, to its newest form: the visualization through new and digital media.

Brothers . Beasts. An Anthology of Men on Fairy Tales

Despite the availability of several eloquent gender studies of fairy tales, a popular reference on men and fairy tales has so far been nonexistent. Brothers and Beasts offers a new perspective by allowing twenty-three male writers the chance to explore their artistic and emotional relationship to their favorite fairy-tale stories. In their personal essays, the contributors—who include genre, literary, mainstream, and visual media writers—offer new insight into men’s reception of fairy tales. Brothers and Beasts, the follow-up to Kate Bernheimer’s influential Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Women Writers Explore Their Favorite Fairy Tales, offers new avenues for research in fairy-tale studies.Bernheimer has invited many well-known writers to contribute to this volume, from Gregory Maguire, whose acclaimed titles include Wicked, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, and Son of a Witch, to Robert Coover, one of the premier authors of postmodern fiction, to Neil Gaiman, a well-known fantasy fiction writer and author of graphic novels. With a foreword by Maria Tatar and an afterword by Jack Zipes, the intimate and contemplative essays are framed by insight from two leading fairy-tale studies scholars.Brothers and Beasts proves that men are deeply influenced by the childhood reading of fairy tales, despite the fact that these fantastic and memorable tales are often mistakenly considered to be the domain of women readers and writers. Colin Neumeyer Kut Vonnegut American Exile

Underlying all of the moral, social, and political issues in Kurt Vonnegut's narratives is the one human condition that exposes the lack of morality in human beings the most, war. For Vonnegut, everything is influenced by war and WWII is the defining moment for his generation, America, and the world. His portrait of post-WWII America is a cynical one due to his experiences and the war's lingering effects on everything he saw thereafter. The epoch of his literary career came in 1969 with the publication of Slaughterhouse-Five, his postmodern anti-war masterpiece, which centers on the firebombing of Dresden, Germany. The focus of this analysis of Vonnegut's work is on his development of the postmodern war narrative in his early literary career. The literary trail leading up to Slaughterhouse-Five is an interesting and important sequence in postmodern literature because it shows, among many things, how he had to adapt and go beyond the traditional confines of available literary conventions to render his vision of a post-war humanity.

Qinna Shen The Politics of Magic. Defa Fairy-Tale Films

From Paul Verhoeven’s The Cold Heart in 1950 to Konrad Petzold’s The Story of the Goose Princess and Her Loyal Horse Falada in 1989, East Germany’s state-sponsored film company, DEFA (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft), produced over forty feature-length, live-action fairy-tale films based on nineteenth-century folk and literary tales. While many of these films were popular successes and paved the way for the studio’s other films to enter the global market, DEFA’s fairy-tale corpus has not been studied in its entirety. In The Politics of Magic: DEFA Fairy-Tale Films, Qinna Shen fills this gap by analyzing the films on thematic and formal levels and examining their embedded agendas in relation to the cultural politics of the German Democratic Republic. In five chapters, Shen compares the films with earlier print versions of the same stories and analyzes revisions made in DEFA’s film adaptations. She also distinguishes the DEFA fairy-tale films from National Socialist, West German, and Disney adaptations of the same tales. Her archival work reconstitutes the cultural-historical context in which films were produced and received, and incorporates the films into the larger narrative of DEFA. For the first time, the banned DEFA fairy-tale comedy, The Robe (1961/1991), is discussed in depth. The book’s title The Politics of Magic is not intended to suggest that DEFA fairy-tale films were merely mouthpieces of official ideology and propaganda. On the contrary, Shen shows that the film...

She has an experimental style which approaches many readers in particular women. The genre could be called post-modern fiction as it shows a lot of post-modern writing techniques such as intertextuality, parody, self-reflectivity and the rewriting of history. In this paper the different literary genres which Jeanette Winterson knows to combine should be presented by the example of the novel The Passion, written in 1987. Using literary devices, generic details should be analysed which make it possible to categorize The Passion according to the different genres.

Geoffrey Chaucer Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, Vol. IV. The Canterbury Tales (in Seven Volumes)

It is impossible to overstate the importance of English poet GEOFFREY CHAUCER (c. 1343–c. 1400) to the development of literature in the English language. His writings—which were popular during his own lifetime with the nobility as well as with the increasingly literate merchant class—marked the first celebration of the English vernacular as a tongue worthy of literary endeavor, most notably in his unfinished narrative poem The Canterbury Tales, the format and structure of which continues to be imitated by writers today. But the impact of Chaucer’s work was felt even into the 16th and 17th centuries, when the first major collections of his writings set a high standard for how authors should be presented to the reading public. This widely esteemed seven-volume set—first published in the 1890s by British academic WALTER WILLIAM SKEAT (1835–1912), Erlington and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge University—is based solely on Chaucer’s original manuscripts and the earliest available published works (with any significant variations or deviations between versions highlighted in the extensive notes), and comes complete with Skeat’s informative commentary on many passages.Volume IV features all extant material for The Canterbury Tales, including:• The Knightes Tale• The Milleres Tale• The Cokes Tale• The Prioresses Tale• The Monkes Tale• The Tale of the Wyf of Bathe• and all the rest.

Her unique vision gave rise to a belief that dreams come true and impossible things happen every day, even in the midst of tragedy. At 28 years old, a neck injury left Angi physically and emotionally paralyzed. Her wandering eyes, once a curse, became a golden ticket from devastation to triumph. As a whole, this collection is a fascinating look at both the evolution of a career and the recent history of fairy-tale scholarship. The volume is organized in three chronological sections, beginning with Stone’s influential early work on women in fairy tales. The second section explores her developing interest in traditional tales told by contemporary tellers, and the final section focuses on Stone’s more recent comparisons of dreams and folktales as artistic expressions. In addition to challenging the genres of folktales and storytelling, a distinctive feature of this work is the wealth of material from interviews, which bring readers’ responses into conversation with the scholar’s work. A preface by the author, a foreword by series editor Donald Haase, and brief introductions to each piece are also included. Some Day Your Witch Will Come is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in Stone’s writings. L. FRANK BAUM, GRANDMA'S TREASURES The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Folklore, legends, myths and fairy tales have followed childhood through the ages. The winged fairies of Grimm and Andersen have brought more happiness to childish hearts than all other human creations.Yet the old time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as ""historical"" in the children's library; for the time has come for a series of newer ""wonder tales"" in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curdling incidents devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident.Having this thought in mind, the story of ""The Wonderful Wizard of Oz"" was written solely to please children of today. It aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nightmares are left out.L. Frank Baum

Wilhelm Grimm, Jacob Grimm The Complete Folk . Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm (Wisehouse Classics - The Complete and Authoritative Edition)

This is the complete and authoritative edition of the folk and fairy tales of the brothers Grimm, with 212 tales, and including the tale of The Starving Children (which was removed after the 1819 edition).THE FOLK & FAIRY TALES OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM (German: Kinder- und Hausmärchen - Vollstämdige Ausgabe) is a collection of German fairy tales first published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm. The collection is commonly known in English as Grimm's Fairy Tales. The work of the Brothers Grimm influenced other collectors, both inspiring them to collect tales and leading them to similarly believe, in a spirit of romantic nationalism, that the fairy tales of a country were particularly representative of it, to the neglect of cross-cultural influence. Among those influenced were the Russian Alexander Afanasyev, the Norwegians Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, the English Joseph Jacobs, and Jeremiah Curtin, an American who collected Irish tales. There was not always a pleased reaction to their collection. Joseph Jacobs was in part inspired by his complaint that English children did not read English fairy tales; in his own words, "What Perrault began, the Grimms completed."
