Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: Excellent, , language: English, abstract: Business ethics is a matter of increasing importance and public awareness. Recent scandals and the financial crisis have suggested that the standard of business ethics is not high and that corporate behaviour should not solely be oriented to profit goals. Rather, a firm's ethical conduct should be part of its focus. While discussions of ethical questions in a market economy are mainly related to large firms, this thesis specifically aims at revealing potential problem issues and solutions for small firms. These firms are often ignored when moral concerns in business are addressed. This is in contrast to their importance for the economy and society of almost every country of the OECD, as they constitute the majority of all companies, and provide a major share of jobs. The majority of the studies examining business ethics are focused on large corporations, using quantitative strategies. Few studies related to small business have been undertaken. The question of how these firms and their owner-managers could systematically engage in business ethics and ethical stakeholder management remain unanswered. The thesis develops a tool which explicitly addresses this topic: the Ethics Integration Guideline. On the basis of a research paradigm of constructivism, a study was designed which was intended to elici...

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 3, University of Wuppertal (Schumpeter school of business), course: CSR, language: English, abstract: Stakeholder Management with long-term sustainability is decisive in determining whether a business organization is being successful or not. Stakeholder Management has a direct impact on the company's competitiveness and its environment. The most profitable companies have strong relationships with their relevant stakeholders groups, that is, the stakeholders in their business field. Stakeholder Management has a wide actively and effectively challenge to manage these important relationships with their different stakeholders groups. Strong customer relationships, successful relationships with suppliers, committed employees and good relationships with other stakeholders groups define the winners of today in the world ́s global economy and that is why companies like Nestlé understand, that they should keep an important and a great relationship with their stakeholders. To be able to achieve a sustainable stakeholder management, organizations first have to define who their key stakeholders are, they have to be able to understand their needs, then secondly, they should define what kind of stakeholder management system applies thereto.

A volume in Ethics in PracticeSeries Editors Robert A. Giacalone, University of Denverand Carole L. Jurkiewicz, Hofstra UniversityOrganizational ethics involves the institutionalized principles, guidelines, and norms thatinfluence how a company and its employees function in an ethical manner. Ultimately, theseprocesses collectively influence a firm's 1) overall sense ofbusiness ethics, 2) management ofemployees, and 3) interactions with partners outside of the immediate work environment.Researcher and practitioners are interested in organizational ethics because the differentapproaches used to develop such a context generate many other positive business outcomes. While the connection between organizational ethics and employee/stakeholder well-being hasbeen explored, moving forward with a number of new investigations should push the literatureforward. This book seeks to explore these important topics and present a more comprehensive overview of organizational ethics andstakeholder well-being in the business environment. Such inquiry is important because the linkages between business ethics andstakeholders, if wellmanaged, have the capacity to benefit both companies and employees. In addition, the content of this book shouldserve to guide future investigations within this area of business ethics.

Of those in management education who debates whether business ethics should be taught as a stand-alone course or in an embedded manner, most recommend combining both approaches for optimal results. This book provides unique insights into the experience of seasoned academics who embed business ethics in teaching management theory and practice. Its multidisciplinary approach enriches its content, since the insights of our colleagues from within their fields are invaluable. It therefore complements other business textbooks. After general themes (curriculum integration, adult learning, learner commitment, and generation Y classrooms), this volume covers ethics and responsibility in people management, team building, change management; operations management, business law, and digital marketing communications. The book provides a platform to share experiences of teaching ethical profitability. It contributes to resolving concerns experienced when faculty wish to incorporate ethics into their teaching but feel they lack preparation or ideas on how to do it. The chapters describe each discipline briefly, raise the typical ethical issues therein, and suggest teaching strategies and exercises or projects. The 'developing versus developed country perspectives' sections may interest schools with high student diversity. The book also meets in-company training needs for attaining and sustaining an ethical culture.

The goal of this project is to detail the core, defining principles of strategic CSR that differentiate it as a concept from the rest of the CSR/sustainability/business ethics field. It is designed to be a provocative piece, but one that solidifies the intellectual framework around an emerging concept--strategic CSR.The foundation for these principles comes from my perspective as a management professor within the business school. As such, it is a pragmatic philosophy, oriented around stakeholder theory, that is designed to persuade business leaders who are skeptical of existing definitions and organizing principles of CSR, sustainability, or business ethics. It is also designed to stimulate thought within the community of intellectuals and business school administrators committed to these issues, but who approach them from more traditional perspectives. Ultimately, therefore, the purpose of the strategic CSR concept (and this book) is radical--it aims to redefine both business education and business practice. By building a theory that defines CSR as core to business operations and value creation (as opposed to peripheral practices that can be marginalized within the firm), these defining principles become applicable across the range of operational functions. As such, they redefine how businesses approach these functions in practice, but also redefine how these subjects should be taught in business schools.

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen (Institute for International Management Consulting I-IMC), language: English, abstract: In the current financial and economic crisis, public concern of a value-based economic system grows. The demand by politicians, economists and the society for ethics-oriented behaviour in the market increases and thus questions the prevailing system of worldwide managerial capitalism. Especially in Germany, the rising awareness for bad business practices calls for a change in values. This development not only affects the providers of products and services, but also has significant impacts on their strategic and operational advisors: the industry of management consulting. Against this background, the present masters dissertation examines the extent to which the principles of integrative consulting ethics are incorporated in management consulting firms in Germany. To this end, the determinants of awareness, institutionalisation, application and enforcement of ethics integration in organisations are assessed. This work represents the first academic approach to researching the practical application of thoroughly reflected ethics-oriented guidelines and standards in the industry management consulting. After a general introduction into the topic, the theoretical framework research provides the background of the work done in t...

In the modern era of globalization Multi-National Corporations (MNCs) have expanded their operational reach to the far corners of the world to a degree and scope never before encountered. Their activities across the global supply chain, both vertically and horizontally, touch numerous societies. Their influential impact is larger than ever before and is growing. One of the key issues facing MNC senior executives at the home office, and trickling down to embedded managers abroad, is moral decision making via the construction of a code of ethics that can universally be applied.Ethics is a compendium of moral interpretations steeped in a multitude of religious and philosophical applications. It is subject to various cultural intrusions as well as independent personal interpretation. The study of international business and all related managerial disciplines usually includes ethical content. The majority of global management textbooks offer a chapter on ethics, and its often misaligned cousin, social responsibility. They tend to cover the subject matter by stating the problem and then reciting laws enacted to combat social injustice as well as including philosophical theories intended to provide generic direction. This iceberg approach, a topical view of the issues, leaves the average MBA student along with executive cadre longing for more specific guidelines. This book is intended to provide templates for ethical decision making within a globalized commercial arena. It presents mo...

Innovative strategic management solutions for today's market Strategic Value Management addresses common problems among business managers and other professionals involved in thinking about developing and managing organizations. In it, author Juan Pablo Stegmann integrates all strategic management and business strategy into an innovative standard that introduces key metrics to strategic management and stock value creation. He argues that most complex business issues can be reduced to the three dimensions of stock value creation-profits, sales growth, and capital-that are linked to three critical strategic management decisions-competition, innovation, and resources. His new approach indicates that every strategy has a clear dollar metric, which can measure its consequences of the strategies in terms of stock value. Competitive and growth strategies are analyzed along with economic, financial, dynamic, and contingent approaches Includes a companion CD-ROM, which contains Stegmann's proven model for strategic management and stock value creation Ethical consequences of strategic decisions are introduced-showing how ethics are linked to long-term stock value creation Explains the roots of the current financial crisis by examining the link between the financial world and strategic management, and proposes possible solutions For any looking to enhance their understanding of this discipline, Strategic Value Management offers a new conceptual model for thinking about business strategy and its link to stock value creation.

This book is an attempt to explore whether social media can be used as a forum for stakeholder dialogue. Based on the interviews of six CSR managers, it aims to shed light on recent technological developments and their influence on stakeholder discourses. From a theoretical perspective, the study builds on the principles of Jürgen Habermas' discourse ethics. Both stakeholder dialogue and discourse ethics have been criticised for their idealistic nature and lack of practical implications. In this work it is argued that social media holds great potential for organising, establishing and improving the Habermasian stakeholder dialogue. The author concludes that social media can indeed be used for stakeholder dialogue and that social media can benefit stakeholder discourses in many, although not in every, a way.

The literature review builds the theoretical framework of sustainable development by examining the drivers for sustainability, triple bottom line approach, shareholder theory, stakeholder theory, and stakeholder groups based on secondary data. The case study methodology rely-ing on public company resources is used to analyse, evaluate, and compare the spe-cific industry drivers for sustainability and the companies' approaches of sustainable development. Based on the theoretical framework, the analysis and discussion of the prioritised issues, approaches, results revealed that the two analysed approaches are successfully in promoting sustainability. Furthermore it was revealed that in-creased economic, environmental, and social value is increasingly created by taking stakeholder claims into account and vertically implementing sustainable development in the upstream and downstream of the value chain. Therefore, it was identified that Kraft Foods' approach is marginal less successful due to its focus on indirect coll...

To answer this question the research investigated extant literature and conducted an interview based study to assess how boards of directors plan their board strategy and conduct performance management incorporating stakeholder requirements. The study was motivated by the need for improvement in boards, that is, by the need to improve both the way they plan a board strategy and the way they conduct an effective performance management that is closely linked to the satisfaction of stakeholder requirements. Interviews were conducted with participants who chair a total of 36 boards and hold 65 seats as ordinary board members at Swiss medium sized companies in several sectors. The interviews were analysed to understand which methodology would be appropriate to plan a board strategy and to conduct board performance management. Despite four decades of good faith effort to teach ethics in business schools, you'll still find today headlines about egregious excess and scandal. It becomes reasonable to ask why these efforts have not been working. Business faculty in ethics courses spend a lot of time teaching theories of ethical reasoning and analyzing those big, thorny dilemmas-triggering what one professor called "ethics fatigue." But what if faculty stopped focusing on ethical analysis and focused on a new curriculum-one that builds a conversation across the core curriculum (not only in ethics courses) and also provides the teaching aids for a new way of thinking about ethics education? This is where Giving Voice to Values (GVV) comes in-the GVV curriculum asks the question: "What if I were going to act on my values? What would I say and do? How could I be most effective?" This book will help faculty across the business curriculum with examples, strategies, and assistance in applying the GVV approach. In addition to an introductory chapter, which explains the rationale and strategy behind GVV, there are twelve individual chapters by faculty from the major business functional areas and from faculty representing different geographic regions. The book is a useful guide for faculty from any business discipline on HOW to use the GVV approach in his or her teaching.

A volume in Ethics in PracticeSeries Editors Robert A. Giacalone, University of Denverand Carole L. Jurkiewicz, Hofstra UniversityThe underlying rationale for this book is to present research that a) highlights the explosively political anddeeply divisive issues involved in managing risk and b) address the empirical deficit and theoreticalchallenges related to managing societal risk ethically. Extant risk management research borrows heavilyfrom engineering, systems theory and business management, and is primarily focused on probabilities, modeling, and abstractions of the value of mitigative action. This research engenders a false sense ofobjectivity and it de-politicizes fundamental political and democratic questions about the allocation ofsociety's scarce resources and about the balance of responsibilities between governing institutions andindividuals with regard to risk. The quantitative and hard-science focus on risk also keeps a discussion ofthe consequences of the distribution of risk, resources and responsibilities for real people out of the limelight. The contributors to this book are experts in a wide range of academic fields and in this book they takeon the challenge of examining their core research with a specific ethics perspective. They explore the ethicsof risk management using theory, cases and data from a range of policy areas, countries and philosophical traditions. This book should be of interest to scholars and practitioners working in fields that deal ei...

This study aims to analyse the applied crisis management and communication strategies of Volkswagen by evaluating the crisis´ impact on each stakeholder group. To accomplish this, the research adopts a single case study design, and it considers a significant amount of qualitative, secondary data. The research first notes that Volkswagen failed in its crisis management prevention tactics, as it was unable to detect the crisis at an early stage. Moreover, the study reveals that VW implemented several immediate crisis management measures for a quick turnaround management. Instead of concentrating on a specific crisis response theory, it is evident that VW made use of different crisis response strategies. VW took full responsibility for the crisis, promising transparency, but it also shifted the blame onto a small group of employees, suggesting that the company was also the victim of human error. Finally, the study reveals the significant impact of the crisis on each stakeholder group, which reveals that VW struggled to regain stakeholder trust and did not keep its promise of transparency. Few industries are buffeted from as many strong forces as healthcare. The industry is highly regulated, thus dramatically increasing costs and sometimes even interfering with the ability to deliver healthcare. New drugs, treatments, and medical technologies are so common that keeping track of them can be overwhelming, and incorporating them into patient care or administration can be costly and complicated. This book lays a stakeholder foundation for managing a healthcare organization strategically. It contains step-by-step tactics as well as examples of HCOs that are having success with various aspects of the stakeholder approach in their organizations. As any experienced healthcare executive knows, making changes to a healthcare delivery system is like trying to modify an aircraft while it is in flight. The process is complicated and the consequences of mistakes can quickly lead to disaster. With this book, you'll get a new approach to managing healthcare within your organization, an approach that will unlock innovation and create more value for a broad group of industry participants.

Water management is a key environmental issue in controlling of floods and reducing droughts. This book provides analysis of the main issues, offering solutions and describing good practice. Water Resources for the Built Environment: management issues and solutions develops an appreciation of the diverse, complex and current themes of the water resources debate across the built environment, urban development and management continuum. The integration of physical and environmental sciences, combined with social, economic and political sciences, provide a unique resource, useful to policy experts, scientists, engineers and subject enthusiasts. By taking an interdisciplinary approach, water resources issues and impacts on the built environment are presented in the inventive and strategic setting of considering the constraints of delivering potable water to an ever-demanding society who, at the same time, are increasingly aware of living in an urban landscape where excessive surface water creates a flood threatened environment – hence, the need to portray a balance between ‘too little vs. too much’. This unique approach to the water resources debate presents a multifaceted collection of chapters that address the contemporary concomitant issues of water shortage and urban flooding and proffers solutions specifically for the built environment. The book is structured into three parts: the first part (Sections 2, 3 and 4) addresses management issues and solutions to minimise water shortages and provide water security for society; whilst the second part of the book (Sections 5 and 6) addresses management issues and solutions to control excessive rainfall and minimise flooding impacts. The third part (Section 7) contextualises the issues of the earlier sections within international case studies from the developing world.

This book aims to present an overview of Chinese, Japanese and Korean modern management styles. The cultures of China, Japan and Korea are influenced by Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism. As such, there are some basic similarities in their management styles. As business operations become more internationalised, the management styles among Chinese, Japanese and Korean companies have blurred the lines of distinction between Western and Eastern cultures. The need for Western managers to adapt to Asian way of doing business, and likewise for Asian companies to understand Western business practices, means that managers have to bridge the gaps and adopt the best management practices containing both Western and Eastern elements.Unlike the traditional approach of setting clear differentiation between Western and Eastern cultures, this book looks at Oriental management from a modern perspective, that is, the fusion of Western and Eastern management styles. By using a multifaceted approach to understanding modern Oriental management, the author stresses the complexities of the business environment in China, Japan and Korea. He suggests that Western theories of management are applicable to Eastern cultural context with some adaptations to the local environment. The author also offers valuable insights into the management styles of Oriental managers by providing a critical perspective of their thought processes in simple yet highly relevant illustrations of models and frameworks.
