Soil is one of the most fundamental resources for sustainability and survival. It is one of the most important assets to protect and pass on to future generations.Soil contamination due to anthropogenic and natural sources is increasing day by day because of increasing population, industrialization, and urbanization. Soil is the receptor of many contaminants from various sources. Contamination decreases the quality of the soil and adversely affects soil organisms.For this study, soil samples from thirteen locations contaminated from agricultural, industrial, and organic sources spread over the districts of Alappuzha and Kottayam in Kerala in the south west coast area of India were analyzed to study the changes in soil characteristics and its influence on soil microbial communities and their activities.

Soil contamination included oil, chemical, heavy metals and organic contaminant. High concentration of chemicals and toxic metals made the soil incapable for any intended engineering works. studies have been performed on contaminated soil and for their stabilization.In this work attempt has been made to study the effect of diesel oil on properties of local soil and then their stabilization with Fly Ash (FA) and Cement Kiln Dust (CKD). The stabilisation of contaminated soil by CKD improved the soil characteristics to some extent. The value of cohesion can be increased nearly linear by addition of CKD. Swelling is reduced by increasing amount of CKD which leads to the conclusion that the swelling behavior of the soil can be effectively controlled by the addition of CKD. From this study, the CKD may be effectively utilized in improvement of hydrocarbon contaminated soil. The stabilisation of contaminated soil by fly ash improved the soil characteristics to some extent. From the overall observations of the study that, the stabilisation of diesel engine oil contaminated soil using fly ash has been observed to be effective.

Often differences in land uses (forest, rubber plantation, paddy field, bare land) are known to have specific effects on soil properties. In the context of the project Living Landscapes China (LILAC) these effects were evaluated and the characteristics of soil types under changing conditions in two transects (altitude and parent material in transect 1, land uses in transect 2) in the Naban River Watershed National Nature Reserve were classified. We used field investigations to classify the soil types, as well as laboratory analyses to quantify specific characteristics in samples, taken from the profiles. Soil physical (bulk density, water content, texture) and chemical parameters (total contents of carbon, nitrogen and macro nutrients, ECEC) were investigated. While differences in altitude did not seem to have profound influences on the soils, effects of land uses were pronounced especially in the first 10 to 20 cm of soil profiles. Soils under forests contain between 1.3 % - 2 % SOC and 0.15 % - 0.17 % TN in the Ah horizon. Many hill slope areas are vulnerable to soil erosion and shallow slope failures due to intense and frequent rainfall of tropical climate.In this study, Laboratory tests were performed on natural soil and soil mixed with deferent percentage of lime to improve soil properties and resistance against slope failure.When lime mixed with in-situ soil, it reduces swelling potential and shrinkage hence inhibit formation of cracks and also reduce soil's dispersibility therefore, reduce erosion possibility. Soil mixed with lime has lower permeability thus, it enhances capillary barrier effects and limits rainfall infiltration into the soil.Results show that optimum lime content to be used in the mix design is 7% by dry unit weight of soil. A two dimensional finite element model of slope was used to evaluate performance of the optimum lime-soil mixed as capillary barrier. The analysis revealed that the optimum thickness of slope cover system in capillary barrier is 30cm. Finding of this study, would contribute to a practical method of slope stabilisation and to display optimum slope cover thickness in capillary barrier effects.

Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Biology - Micro- and Molecular Biology, grade: 1.5, Mar Augusthinose College, language: English, abstract: The dyes are complex chemical compounds that imparts colour to substances. On the urge of urbanisation, the use of synthetic dyes is increasing largely and its untreated effluent release causes serious environmental pollution affecting water bodies by disturbing the aquatic ecosystem, soil, plants, animals, humans. The recalcitrant nature of these dyes limits its treatment using conventional methods wherein biological methods using microorganisms are reported to completely mineralize the dyes lowering the release of degradation products. The present work focuses on the biodegradation of synthetic dyes by isolating bacteria from a dyeing unit. Soil samples from the dye contaminated soils was collected, its degradation potentiality was observed using three major dye of studies congo red, brilliant green and methylene blue within 24 hr incubation. Maximum decoloarized dye (congo red and brilliant green) were chosen, serially diluted to 10-5 and plated to obtain two distinct colonies from decolorized congo red (CR1, CR2) and three distinct colonies from decolorized brilliant green (BG1, BG2, BG3). An understanding of the mechanical properties of unsaturated soils is crucial for geotechnical engineers worldwide, as well as to those concerned with the interaction of structures with the ground. This book deals principally with fine-grained clays and silts, or soils containing coarser sand and gravel particles but with a significant percentage of fines. The study of unsaturated soil is a practical subject, linking fundamental science to nature. Soils in general are inherently variable and their behaviour is not easy to analyse or predict, and unsaturated soils raise the complexity to a higher level. Even amongst practicing engineers, there is often lack of awareness of the intricacies of the subject. This book offers a perspective of unsaturated soils based on recent research and demonstrates how this dovetails with the general discipline of soil mechanics. Following an introduction to the basic soil variables, the phases, the phase interactions and the relevance of soil structure, an up-to-date review of laboratory testing techniques is presented. This includes suction measurement and control techniques in triaxial cell testing. This is followed by an introduction to stress state variables, critical state and theoretical models in unsaturated soils. A detailed description of the thermodynamic principles as applied to multi-phase materials under equilibrium conditions follows. These principles are then used to explore and develop a fundamental theoretical basis for analysing unsaturated soils. Soil structure is broken down into its component parts to develop equations describing the dual stress regime. The critical state strength and compression characteristics of unsaturated soils are examined and it is shown how the behaviour may be viewed as a three-dimensional model in dimensionless stress-volume space. Alike all other hill dwellers of the world, shifting cultivation, commonly known as 'Jhum', is the traditional agronomic practice among the indigenous people of hilly tracts of Bangladesh. This age old cultivation system affects, mainly negatively, on soil environment and worsens the upland watershed health. For investigating this hypothesis, a study was conducted at three pair sites viz: Simina Para, Kark Mohajon Para and At- mile area of Sadar upazila under Khagarachari district to determine the effects of shifting cultivation on soil environment. Both soil physico-chemical properties and the biochemical and biological properties of soil microbes were studied. The differences in microbial population count and population composition may not be universal for all shifting cultivation sites; however, it explains the unavoidability in the variations of the biological and biochemical characteristics of soil microflora in shifting cultivated areas and emphasizes the necessity of taking this factor into consideration in management of soils in fellow lands after shifting cultivation.

Maize is the main staple crop in East African mountains but its yield is affected by biotic and abiotic factors. Lepidopteran pests such as, Chilo partellus (Crambidae) and Busseola fusca (Noctuidae) reduced maize yield while soil elements increase the yield. In addition to enhancing maize yields, some soil element such as silicon (Si) aid plants in overcoming abiotic and biotic stresses. Hence, any factor that induces Si deficiency in soil might be detrimental to the plant growth and its resistance to insect pests and diseases. Understanding how the projected temperature increase will affect Si levels in soil and maize is crucial in promoting maize production in different agro-ecosystems in the face of climate change. This study evaluated the Si levels in both soil and maize plants cultivated along three altitudinal gradients of East African mountains (Machakos, Taita and Kilimanjaro) characterized by graded changes in climatic conditions. The study also linked the Si level in maize plants to lepidopteran pests' distribution.

The red rot disease causes heavy economic loss to a tune of more than 500 million rupees to the farmers and industry in India. Colletotrichum falcatum pathogenesis in terms of spore germination, production of germ tubes, appressoria formation and appressorial melanization has been well demonstrated. Role of appressoria and its melanization in C. falcatum pathogenicity has been proved using melanin inhibitor tricyclazole. Specificity of melanin inhibitors was proved by comparing the azole and nonazole fungicides. Three genes responsible for melanin biosynthesis viz., PKS1 (Polyketide synthase), SCD1 (Scytalone dehydratase), THR1 (trihydroxynaphthalene reductase - 1,3,8 THN Reductase) have been amplified in C. falcatum for their partial sequences. Differential expression of enzymes involved in melanin biosynthesis was observed during C. falcatum differentiation. Cultural and pathogenic variability of C. falcatum isolates have been correlated with the induction of mycelial melanin.

An understanding of the mechanical properties of unsaturated soils is crucial for geotechnical engineers worldwide, as well as to those concerned with the interaction of structures with the ground. This book deals principally with fine-grained clays and silts, or soils containing coarser sand and gravel particles but with a significant percentage of fines. The study of unsaturated soil is a practical subject, linking fundamental science to nature. Soils in general are inherently variable and their behaviour is not easy to analyse or predict, and unsaturated soils raise the complexity to a higher level. Even amongst practicing engineers, there is often lack of awareness of the intricacies of the subject. This book offers a perspective of unsaturated soils based on recent research and demonstrates how this dovetails with the general discipline of soil mechanics. Following an introduction to the basic soil variables, the phases, the phase interactions and the relevance of soil structure, an up-to-date review of laboratory testing techniques is presented. This includes suction measurement and control techniques in triaxial cell testing. This is followed by an introduction to stress state variables, critical state and theoretical models in unsaturated soils. A detailed description of the thermodynamic principles as applied to multi-phase materials under equilibrium conditions follows. These principles are then used to explore and develop a fundamental theoretical basis for analysing unsaturated soils. Soil structure is broken down into its component parts to develop equations describing the dual stress regime. The critical state strength and compression characteristics of unsaturated soils are examined and it is shown how the behaviour may be viewed as a three-dimensional model in dimensionless stress-volume space. The analysis is then extended to the work input into unsaturated soils and the development of conjugate stress, volumetric and strain-increment variables. These are used to examine the micromechanical behaviour of kaolin specimens subjected to triaxial shear strength tests and lead to observations not detectable by other means.
