This book is one of the single most complete pieces on gastrointestinal (GI) nematode infections. The review chapter is quite intensive. The steps in developing a laboratory model for the preliminary study of GI nematode infections in small ruminants in particular and other domestic animals in general are outlined through various experiments that were performed. Some of the factors which are known to influence the responses of host animals particularly small ruminants to their GI nematode parasites were examined in outbred albino mice. The idea was that if mice responded to its natural trichostrongylid parasite, Heligmosomoides bakeri in exactly the same way as the ruminants do to their own natural parasites especially Haemonchus contortus which is also a trichostrongylid and a blood sucker like H. bakeri of mice, then the H. bakeri-mouse model can be a suitable model for the preliminary study of some aspects of GI nematode infections of small ruminants and other ruminants or livestock in general. The results largely showed similarities in the way the outbred albino mouse and ruminants responded to their various GI nematodes.

This book is about developing good management practices in production of indigenous chicken ("kuku wa kienyenji" as they are popularly known in Kenya and the Eastern African region) as a strategy to reduce poverty among rural poor people. The book also highlights the participation of the rural poor in the development of these practices. The book is based on information from interaction with a broad range of stakeholders including research from experimentation on-station and on-farm with 200 farmers in 20 villages in three counties, as well as extensive surveys across different regions in Kenya. This provides strong evidence that the prudent utilisation of rural people's local resources and their active involvement in research and development activities is an effective strategy for poverty reduction, improved livelihoods and women's empowerment in rural Africa.

Shorttitle: HIV/AIDS/TB in Kenya Mario J. Azevedo, Gwendolyn S. Prater, and Sandra Hayes argue that, without a deeper understanding of Kenya's cultural norms and practices on HIV/TB, which are spreading alarmangly in Kenya, scholars and health professionals will not be able to eradicate or meaningfully contain the devastating impact of the twin epidemics. A focus on factors such as the environment and the distribution and management of scarce resources alone represent only a fraction of what is needed to restore the health of the people and have them respond positively to the efforts made by the government authorities, health care providers, and humanitarians of international organizations. The three authors acknowledge the small victories Kenya has achieved against the burden of disease. However, without an integrated approach to the reduction and eradication of the many man-made and environmental factors responsible for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, and other ailments, which together weaken and inhibit people's immune system, Kenya's health future will remain bleak for many years to come.

This book focusses on reviewing education policies in Kenya to determine specific provisions that address discriminatory practices towards girls with disabilities. The findings reflect gaps in policy enactment, interpretation and implementation at the grass root levels. The author concludes that policies should not just exist in paper but provisions must be translated into action so that the targeted population benefits from such legislation.

Inorganic materials show a diverse range of important properties that are desirable for many contemporary, real-world applications. Good examples include recyclable battery cathode materials for energy storage and transport, porous solids for capture and storage of gases and molecular complexes for use in electronic devices. An understanding of the function of these materials is necessary in order to optimise their behaviour for real applications, hence the importance of 'structure–property relationships'. The chapters presented in this volume deal with recent advances in the characterisation of crystalline materials. They include some familiar diffraction methods, thoroughly updated with modern advances. Also included are techniques that can now probe details of the three-dimensional arrangements of atoms in nanocrystalline solids, allowing aspects of disorder to be studied. Small-angle scattering, a technique that is often overlooked, can probe both ordered and disordered structures of materials at longer length scales than those probed by powder diffraction methods. Addressing both physical principals and recent advances in their applications, Structure from Diffraction Methods covers: Powder Diffraction X-Ray and Neutron Single-Crystal Diffraction PDF Analysis of Nanoparticles Electron Crystallography Small-Angle Scattering Ideal as a complementary reference work to other volumes in the series (Local Structural Characterisation and Multi Length-Scale Characterisation), or as an examination of the specific characterisation techniques in their own right, Structure from Diffraction Methods is a valuable addition to the Inorganic Materials Series.

Cobalt is an essential trace element in ruminants which can be used to synthesize vitamin B12 in the digestive tract by microbial action. When intake of Cobalt is inadequate, the microbial population in the rumen is altered, and synthesis of vitamin B12 is greatly lowered. Supplementing Cobalt in diets of ruminants could therefore help to supplement vitamin B12 needed for optimal microbial activities and subsequent breakdown of fibrous feeds. Cobalt supplementation could therefore help prevent growth retardation, weakness, emaciation and other abnormal situations experienced by young and adult ruminants in semi-arid environment.

Mutation breeding is one of the innovative methods in plant breeding. Hugo de Vries introduced the term mutation in the late 19th century. Since the induction of artificial transmutation of gene by X-rays on Drosophila by Muller in 1927, the field of mutation breeding has gained improvement. Cowpea is an important food legume of the tropics and subtropics.Improvement of cowpea by conventional breeding techniques is time taking and involves constraints such as small flower, difficult crossing, poor seed setting and less number of seeds per pod. Mutation breeding in recent times as an effective tool for crop improvement and an efficient means supplementing existing germplasm for cultivar improvement in breeding programs. Cowpea has immense scope for genetic improvement for various qualitative and quantitative characters besides widening the genetic base through induced mutagenesis. This book will be definitely helpful for researchers, teachers as well as postgraduate students in standardizing the studies on mutation breeding in cowpea. This book deals with the study of induced genetic variability through gamma rays and EMS in two distinct varieties.

The violence that followed the 2007 presidential elections in Kenya came as a surprise both to Kenyans as well as the international community. This was in part a contrast to the popularly held view of Kenya as a model of stability in the turbulent Eastern African region. The post-election violence challenged the conceited view of the international community that Kenya was not “a country to worry about” - but a society with historic deeply rooted ethnic animosities. This book traces the ethnicity problem from the independence struggle to how it manifests in contemporary society. The book expresses how freedom of expression, association and of the press has not played to strengthen democracy but has made it more problematic in Kenya. The worrying correlation between democratization and ethnic violence reveals the growing politicization of ethnicity at the expense of state centered citizenship in Kenya. The repeated efforts to rewrite national constitutions and the perennial quest for reforms demonstrate the continuing political energy of nationalistic ideologies where priority is given to ethnic relations thus compromising the practicality of a participatory democracy.

Ruminants are mammals of the order artiodactyla and are capable of digesting plant based foods by initially softening the consumed material which takes place in the animal's first compartment of its alimentary tract. Ruminants have a four compartment stomach and the different compartments are the rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum. Fermentation of ingesta takes place in the rumen. Digestion/fermentation in the rumen takes place by the action of microbes mostly bacteria, however there are some protozoa, fungi and yeasts. Fiber such as cellulose and hemi-cellulose are degraded to volatile fatty acids these include acetic acid propionic acid and hydrobutyric acid. Fermentation of proteins and non-structural carbohydrates also takes place within these chambers.Three major categories of ruminants are recognised based on their feed type and feeding habits.Concentrate selectors, intermediate types and grass/roughage eaters.Guniea-pigs, horses and rabbits are not grouped as true ruminants since they have simple single-chambered stomach and they digest cellulose via an enlarged cecum allowing easy digestion of fibrous materials and are reffered to as hindgut fermenters.

This raises the question if the government of Kenya has implemented action to improve its development status and what sort of actions this has been. So, first, the status of development in a country must be assessed. After analyzing the data, concrete measures can be implemented. Berg-Schlosser describes in his abstract a bright range of indicators that exist for assessing development processes in a country. He points out that there is an urgent need for indicators which are used as benchmarks in international relations or for decisions for development by the IMF, World Bank and others. Generally, he emphasizes that the interpretation of the indicators must be done carefully. Often there are problems with the proper conceptualization and the operationalization of certain notions. Problems and limitations of such data analysis still remain. After a short introduction in chapter 2 about the important facts of Kenya, this essay tries to figure out in chapter...

This work exams rhetorical differences between texts written by the 'journalese' of different cultural practices but using as means of expression the same language: English. The text is based on a research carried out at the master's level at Kenyatta University in Kenya. The purpose of the study was to find out how newspapers compared in their writing practice in the context of Post-2007 Election Violence in Kenya. The study is based on the premise that most newspapers have in-house policies that inform their writing and that writers select certain forms more than others to achieve their goal of writing. The study therefore described, compared and contrasted the linguistic features used by the Daily Nation and The Standard newspapers to cover Post Election Violence and hence explained their discourse function. The literature review provided insight from related studies on discoursal features that apply in texts. Expressions that imply and visualize violence characterized the writing of headlines. On purpose too, specific linguistic features prominently applied in the body of news beats.

In recent years, the concept of organizational practices has become increasingly popular in organization studies. The focus of research that follows a "practice approach" is on the actual activities in organizations as opposed to prescribed procedures or standardized routines. This book is about a hitherto neglected category of practice, namely, disliked practices in organizations. On the basis of an empirical study in three German companies, the author reveals how continuous practicing of disliked practices results in a discrepancy between practitioners and their practices. This stands in contrast to previous literature, which understands practices as being exclusively positive and in which the consent of the practitioner to their practices is generally assumed.Based on the findings from the inductive study, the author develops a Theory of Disliked Practices, which explicates findings about the nature and the evolvement of disliked practices, and the negative effects of disliked practices on practitioners and organizational functioning. This book addresses researchers, lecturers, students and all those interested in organization studies and related disciplines, such as industrial-organizational psychology and sociology. The results of the study have significant implications for practice theory and methodology. Moreover, the theoretical model presented in this book provides a valuable basis for further research. Beyond that, the book will be insightful for managers and ...

This book examines the various factors of credit worthiness in order to assess their influence on access to bank credit by small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Finance has been identified in many business surveys as one of the most important factors determining the survival and growth of SMEs in both developing and developed countries. Access to finance enables SMEs to participate in productive investments, thus ensuring their competitiveness and that of the nation as a whole. Despite their dominant numbers and importance in job creation, small and medium enterprises often face difficulty in obtaining bank credit. A review of the literature on financing small and medium sized enterprises shows that there is a gap in knowledge of the determinants of access to bank finance by the SMEs in developing countries such as Kenya. Most studies are limited in scope. Therefore, this study investigated both financial and non financial factors which determine access to bank credit by SMEs in Kenya.

Event management is a ubiquitous word in modern society. The word is used for small business breakfasts, large corporate shows and also for big international sport events, such as the Olympic Games. We all have an idea of what management is, but what is an event? This question and the theories behind the dynamic event industry are summarized in this book. Ultimately, the book combines a range of differing views about best practice and recommended behaviours; it identifies and recommends an event management model that potentially enables small-scale event managers to fully develop the potential of such events. The book reduces the gap between theory and practice and the framework of best practices can be applied to significantly improve the quality of managing similar events in the future.

This book focuses on the socio-economic characteristics of fish farmers and their practices; opportunities and challenges facing fish farming development; effect of fish farming on household food security and livelihoods and strategic options for improving fish farming for enhancing household food security and livelihoods in Western Kenya. Kenyan fish farming potential has been underexploited and it remains under developed where pond productivity is low and not rising, despite the effort of several players. Capture fish in Lake Victoria and rivers has subsequently declined due to overfishing and influence of water hyacinth. Fish farming has accounted for only about 3% of total fish production until the introduction of the Fish Farming Enterprise Productivity Program in 2009 a programme by Kenyan Government initiatives to stimulate economic development and foster economic recovery, poverty alleviation and spur development. The challenges facing fish farming development in Kenya is shortage of good quality seed and feeds. Tilapia species is mostly cultured because of the following attributes; grows faster, breeds easily in ponds, tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions.

In this provocative treatise, author Joe Khamisi catalogues the events that took place during one of Kenya's most important periods in history. This period began in 2002, when Daniel Arap Moi stepped down after twenty-four years as president of Kenya. Khamisi reviews events up to the time when the country exploded in post-election violence in 2007 and the subsequent formation of the Grand Coalition Government between President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Amolo Odinga the following year. Khamisi explores the leadership betrayals that he believes are responsible for the political, social, and economic rot that are pervasive in Kenya. He recounts how he helped a presidential poll loser in the 2007 elections, Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, capture the coveted role of vice president. He also presents an in-depth analysis of Senator Barack Obama's visit to Kenya in 2006, as well as his own personal experiences with Barack's late father, who he describes as a person who "chain-smoked contentedly, drank copiously, and partied spiritedly." The Politics of Betrayal is critical reading for anyone who is interested in the transformation of Kenya from a one-party dictatorship to a pluralistic nation.

In Kenya, communities have since time immemorial practised indigenous technologies such as woodcarving and basket weaving. The consequence is that, with the increasing need for environmental management in Kenya, indigenous technologies such as these have come under scrutiny with a view to harmonizing them with the principles of ecological regeneration. In Wamunyu and Katangi areas of Mwala District, the community has taken up wood carving and basket weaving as a commercial venture to supplement their income without much concern on the impact of their activities on the environment. The book focuses on woodcarving and basket weaving handicrafts among the Kamba community in Wamunyu and Katangi locations of Mwala District of former Machakos District in Kenya. The findings suggest a need for both woodcarvers and basket weavers to carry out their trade in a sustainable way, afforestation and reforestation programmes and, as relates to leftovers from the respective crafts, adaptation of good waste management practices.

Coffee breeding is the focus subject of this book. Coffee is a very important commodity in international commerce. Coffee breeding dates back to 19th Century and has been pursued vigorously through the 20th Century and is being pursued actively in many of the more than 80 developing countries producing coffee. The economies of most of these producing countries are dependent up on the earnings from coffee exports. However, commercial coffee plants are ravaged by many pests and diseases. The two commercially important species Coffea arabica and C. canephora are biologically distinct with diverse reproductive systems. This entails the use of widely divergent breeding techniques for the improvement of these species for commercial exploitation. Breeding disease and pest resistant coffee plants is very important to most of the coffee producing countries as this ensures environmental health in the long run and contributes to public health promotion in these countries. The book “Coffee Breeding” reviews the existing knowledge on the subject of classical plant breeding as applied to coffee, summarises the recent advances and presents models for future breeding exercises.
