Shannawaz Mohd Mortality During Infancy and Its Clustering in India

The level of infant mortality has been regarded as an explicit indicator to measure the extent of health problems associated with a population as well as its socio-economic development. Since the Indian states are quite diverse in the social, economic, cultural geographical and environmental conditions, they also differ in the pace of mortality transition. Some states have very less infant, neonatal and postnatal mortality like Kerala and while some has very high infant, neonatal and postnatal mortality like Madhya Pradesh. Although the overall infant mortality rate of India is declining, there is some retardation with the pace of decline of infant mortality rate. The present levels of infant and child mortality are quite high and need immediate attention. Consequently, for the policy makers, this remains a difficult task to tackle. National family health survey-1992-93, 1998-99 and 2005-06 data are used for the analysis. The result shows that there is clustering of infant deaths in the major Indian states and it is not uniformly distributed with different socio-economic characteristics. Infant death clustering increased significantly over the time.

Data Clustering is process of organizing data into specific groups, the characteristics of which are unknown. Data clustering has been studied for a long time by many researchers with different methods. Traditional clustering techniques has some drawbacks. In this book, we deals with such limitations of traditional clustering techniques. To overcome these drawback we have selected 'Nature-Inspired / Swarm Intelligence' technique that is 'Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)' for data clustering. As we know, nature is always a source of inspiration. In last few decades, the research is stimulated on new computing paradigms and result of this effort is emergence of new problem solving techniques. These techniques are widely used due to their decentralized and self-organized behaviour.

Cluster or co-cluster analyses are important tools in a variety of scientific areas. The introduction of this book presents a state of the art of already well-established, as well as more recent methods of co-clustering. The authors mainly deal with the two-mode partitioning under different approaches, but pay particular attention to a probabilistic approach. Chapter 1 concerns clustering in general and the model-based clustering in particular. The authors briefly review the classical clustering methods and focus on the mixture model. They present and discuss the use of different mixtures adapted to different types of data. The algorithms used are described and related works with different classical methods are presented and commented upon. This chapter is useful in tackling the problem of co-clustering under the mixture approach. Chapter 2 is devoted to the latent block model proposed in the mixture approach context. The authors discuss this model in detail and present its interest regarding co-clustering. Various algorithms are presented in a general context. Chapter 3 focuses on binary and categorical data. It presents, in detail, the appropriated latent block mixture models. Variants of these models and algorithms are presented and illustrated using examples. Chapter 4 focuses on contingency data. Mutual information, phi-squared and model-based co-clustering are studied. Models, algorithms and connections among different approaches are described and illustrated. Chapter 5 presents the case of continuous data. In the same way, the different approaches used in the previous chapters are extended to this situation. Contents 1. Cluster Analysis. 2. Model-Based Co-Clustering. 3. Co-Clustering of Binary and Categorical Data. 4. Co-Clustering of Contingency Tables. 5. Co-Clustering of Continuous Data. About the Authors Gérard Govaert is Professor at the University of Technology of Compiègne, France. He is also a member of the CNRS Laboratory Heudiasyc (Heuristic and diagnostic of complex systems). HARINAM SINGH LEVELS AND TRENDS OF INFANT MORTALITY RATE

Infant mortality rate is a valuable indicator and it reflects a country's level of socioeconomic development and quality of life and is used for monitoring and evaluating population and health programmes and policies. It also affects the desired size of family. This study aims to find out the differentials and possible determinants of the infant mortality in Uttar Pradesh, India. By using the Sample Registration System data of the Government of India for the period of 1981 to 2008, time series analysis technique has been used to examine the levels and trends of infant mortality rate in Uttar Pradesh, India. Correlation and multiple regression analysis techniques have been used to examine the most important factors affecting infant mortality rate in Uttar Pradesh over the period of 1991-2001. This analysis reveals that the prevailing rate of high IMR in the Uttar Pradesh is around 80 during the last decade point towards the inadequacy in the quality of health and MCH services and on the other hand lack of demand for such services specifically during neonatal stage of the infant in rural areas.

Denzel Chua, Stefanni De Guzman Understanding the Poisson Log-Bilinear Regression Approach

Mortality tables play a very important role in planning for health care systems and in computing life insurance premiums. For the past few decades, there has been an increase in the number of studies about estimating and forecasting mortality tables as a response to mortality improvements. In the early 1990's, the Lee-Carter model was developed and has been widely used for studies on mortality rate and has been subjected to some modifications for improvements. This paper utilized one of these modifications, which was proposed by Brouhns, et.al. (2002). The number of deaths, a count random variable, is said to be well-suited to the Poisson distribution. Thus, this makes the Poisson log-bilinear regression model appropriate in modeling and forecasting mortality. This book aims to be able to fit the Poisson log-bilinear model to the number of deaths for some northern European countries. A maximum likelihood estimation technique is used to estimate the parameters of the model with the aid of LEM program and SAS. A chi-squared goodness of fit test was performed to test significance and usability of model. Lastly, the deviance residuals for the estimated number of deaths were taken.

Baseline data on the levels and trends of maternal mortality is critical to development plans, socio-economic projections and resource allocation to varying tiers of spatial scales competing for scarce development resources.Information about maternal mortality is needed not only for what it tells us about the risk of pregnancy and childbirth but also for what it implies about women's health in general. The geography of maternal mortality in Nigeria indicates the near-absence of baseline locale-specific information on maternal health statistics disaggregated into multi-spatial scales. This work examines the situation and changes in the incidence of maternal mortality in the context of its human development indicators in Delta State. The study covered years 2003 to 2010, comprising of pre and post intervention periods. The mixed method research design employed is ecological and population-based; employing both statistical and cartographic analysis. The study has both intellectual and policy implications and it will be very relevant to population and medical geographers as well as to other stakeholders with an enthusiasm for and a commitment to health and development work.

Rania Mohammed Process Evaluation of Focused Antenatal Care Service

Maternal mortality remains a major challenge to health systems worldwide1. It is estimated that more than 536, 000 women die every year in the world due to complications related to pregnancy or childbirth; half of them live in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Pregnancy related complication is among the leading causes of death and disability for women age 15-49 in the developing countries . Ethiopia has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in Africa and the world, estimated at 673 per 100,000 live births and high neonatal mortality rate of 38/1000 live births , which is, remain among the highest in the world6. Maternal mortality in Ethiopia is likely linked both to extremely low utilization of ANC, skilled birth attendants and facility delivery and to even lower use of emergency obstetric care. The 2005 Demographic and Health Survey found that only 25% of all Ethiopian mothers living in rural areas received any antenatal care from a health professional in their last pregnancy, 3% delivered in a health facility, and 0.3% delivered by Caesarean section . During evaluability assessment, in Agaro according to expert interview and document review, most mothers suffer from complication.

But when these conditions occur in the same child simultaneously, the mortality increases many fold. If the measles is complicated by Pneumonia, gastroenteritis or encephalitis, then the situation is even worse. Keeping in mind the importnce of the topic, we have tried to gauge the situation in the real scenario. These problems are at the priority of the WHO regrding its effforts to reduce the mortality of the children in the developing world. This book will be a little bit guidline to plan the strategies to rduce the malnutrition rates in the children in the developing world. The monograph explores in detail the long-term trends in mortality from external causes within the framework of the uncompleted epidemiological transition in Russia. Specific chapters are dedicated to mortality from road traffic accidents, suicides, homicides and accidental alcohol poisoning, as well as from injuries of undetermined intent. The book analyses the role of external causes of death among elderly people and, using the example of the consequences of road traffic accidents, studies the question of how many years of healthy life are lost not only due to mortality, but to injuries too. Mortality in every group of external causes in Russia is analysed in comparison with the corresponding type of mortality in foreign countries. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, lecturers, researchers and experts in demography, the social sciences and economics, as well as for everyone interested in demographic issues in Russia.

These techniques have proven useful in a wide range of areas such as medicine, psychology, market research and bioinformatics. This fifth edition of the highly successful Cluster Analysis includes coverage of the latest developments in the field and a new chapter dealing with finite mixture models for structured data. Real life examples are used throughout to demonstrate the application of the theory, and figures are used extensively to illustrate graphical techniques. The book is comprehensive yet relatively non-mathematical, focusing on the practical aspects of cluster analysis. Key Features: • Presents a comprehensive guide to clustering techniques, with focus on the practical aspects of cluster analysis. • Provides a thorough revision of the fourth edition, including new developments in clustering longitudinal data and examples from bioinformatics and gene studies • Updates the chapter on mixture models to include recent developments and presents a new chapter on mixture modeling for structured data. Practitioners and researchers working in cluster analysis and data analysis will benefit from this book.

Explores regular structures in graphs and contingency tables by spectral theory and statistical methods This book bridges the gap between graph theory and statistics by giving answers to the demanding questions which arise when statisticians are confronted with large weighted graphs or rectangular arrays. Classical and modern statistical methods applicable to biological, social, communication networks, or microarrays are presented together with the theoretical background and proofs. This book is suitable for a one-semester course for graduate students in data mining, multivariate statistics, or applied graph theory; but by skipping the proofs, the algorithms can also be used by specialists who just want to retrieve information from their data when analysing communication, social, or biological networks. Spectral Clustering and Biclustering: Provides a unified treatment for edge-weighted graphs and contingency tables via methods of multivariate statistical analysis (factoring, clustering, and biclustering). Uses spectral embedding and relaxation to estimate multiway cuts of edge-weighted graphs and bicuts of contingency tables. Goes beyond the expanders by describing the structure of dense graphs with a small spectral gap via the structural eigenvalues and eigen-subspaces of the normalized modularity matrix. Treats graphs like statistical data by combining methods of graph theory and statistics. Establishes a common outline structure for the contents of each algorithm, applicable to networks and microarrays, with unified notions and principles.

Written in Irv Yalom's inimitable story-telling style, Staring at the Sun is a profoundly encouraging approach to the universal issue of mortality. In this magisterial opus, capping a lifetime of work and personal experience, Dr. Yalom helps us recognize that the fear of death is at the heart of much of our anxiety. Such recognition is often catalyzed by an «awakening experience»—a dream, or loss (the death of a loved one, divorce, loss of a job or home), illness, trauma, or aging. Once we confront our own mortality, Dr. Yalom writes, we are inspired to rearrange our priorities, communicate more deeply with those we love, appreciate more keenly the beauty of life, and increase our willingness to take the risks necessary for personal fulfillment.

Aslahi Shahri Bibi Masoomeh Intrusion Detection System Using Hybrid Gsa-kmeans

Security is an important aspect in our daily life. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are developed to be the defense against security threats. Current signature based IDS like firewalls and antiviruses, which rely on labeled training data, generally cannot detect novel attacks. The purpose of this study is to improve the performance of IDS in terms of detection accuracy and reduce False Alarm Rate (FAR). Clustering is an important task in data mining that is used in IDS applications to detect novel attacks. Clustering refers to grouping together data objects so that objects within a cluster are similar to one another, while objects in different clusters are dissimilar. K-Means is a simple and efficient algorithm that is widely used for data clustering. However, its performance depends on the initial state of centroids and may trap in local optima. The Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is one effective method for searching problem space to find a near optimal solution. In this study, a hybrid approach based on GSA and k-Means (GSA-kMeans), which uses the advantages of both algorithms, is presented.

Francis Okpaleke, Elizabeth Ogozi Cervical Cancer Mortality Rates and the Dialectics of International Humanitarian Intervention with a focus on Nigeria

Scientific Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Biology - Diseases, Health, Nutrition, , language: English, abstract: The prevalence of cervical cancer and mortality rates has continued over the years despite several international and local efforts to reduce it in developing countries particularly sub-Saharan Africa which have the highest prevalence rates globally. This dissertation appraised the factors responsible for cervical cancer prevalence and assayed the efficacy of these interventions with particular focus on Nigeria by identifying the risk factors causing its spread and recommending prevention strategies for best options in reducing rates of cervical cancer in Nigeria.A systematic literature approach was used for the review of studies. This was carried out through database search on the prevalence, risk, mortality, factors and intervention for cervical cancer in developing countries with a narrative analysis to explanation for the local, national and international interventions. The findings revealed that lack of a national policy on cervical cancer on awareness, treatment, prevention and control, limit intervention efforts. Furthermore, massive overlaps in the international intervention programme, paucity of data on the analysis of impact and efficacy of these interventions, including unavailability of vaccine for high risk HPV stymie efforts for the reduction of cervical cancer in Nigeria. It was further established that the lack of a national policy on cervica...

Substitute Parents. Biological and Social Perspectives on Alloparenting in Human Societies

[This book] brings together high-quality papers from many different fields: endocrinology, evolutionary biology, demography, economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology... It can be seen as a practical tool for researchers in the field, and it provides a large amount of data across a wide range of populations and helps to find a common ground between theories emerging from different fields. It is the kind of book that will never end up in the last dusty row of your shelves because you will continually refer to it, picking up here and there empirical and theoretical data for the next decades. BioOne. Research EvolvedFrom a comparative perspective, human life histories are unique and raising offspring is unusually costly: humans have relatively short birth intervals compared to other apes, childhood is long, mothers care simultaneously for many dependent children (other apes raise one offspring at a time), infant mortality is high in natural fertility/mortality populations, and human females have a long post-reproductive lifespan. These features conspire to make child raising very burdensome. Mothers frequently defray these costs with paternal help (not usual in other ape species), although this contribution is not always enough. Grandmothers, elder siblings, paid allocarers, or society as a whole, help to defray the costs of childcare, both in our evolutionary past and now. Studying offspring care in a various human societies, and other mammalian species, a wide range of sp...

Working with principles from the fields of evolutionary and developmental biology (evo-devo), this fascinating work offers a new approach to analyzing child growth and development, examining each stage and transition in detail, from fetal development to preadulthood. Based on the author's in-depth review of the current literature and his own observations as a pediatric endocrinologist, the book demonstrates how the transitions between human life history phases represent unique periods of evolutionary adaptive response to the environment. In addition, the author explains why an understanding of these transition periods enables us to better understand the sequence and mechanisms of child growth as well as to better diagnose child growth disorders. Logically organized and clearly written, Evo-Devo of Child Growth: Sets a solid foundation of principles such as evolutionary thinking in medicine and child growth, life history theory, and heterochrony and allometry Examines the relationship between child growth and the theory of life history Applies evo-devo theory to fetal growth, infancy, childhood, juvenility, adolescence, and preadulthood Explores the trade-offs and adaptive phenotypic plasticity during transition periods Explains the role of life history theory in understanding and diagnosing growth disorders such as Down syndrome, Noonan syndrome, and Silver-Russell syndrome In addition to the author's own analysis and observations, this book also features notes from leading clinicians and evolutionary biologists, offering additional perspectives on the relationship between evo-devo and child growth and development. Evo-Devo of Child Growth provides a new perspective for evolutionary biologists to understand the phases and transitions of child growth. Moreover, it offers a new approach to help clinicians to better understand and diagnose a broad range of child growth disorders.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: Merit, University of Birmingham (International Development Department (IDD)- School of Public Policy), course: International Development, language: English, abstract: The perception of child labour in Egypt like in any other place in the world has been changed dramatically in recent years. The current debates about child labour have conceived child labour as vital element for the survival of poor families. Most of the traditional interventions were focusing on combating child labour with no consideration to the living circumstances of the child labourers, controversially the new approaches by different national and international stakeholders started to adjust their interventions to be appealing to the circumstances of child labourers and their families. The main theme of this dissertation is to examine the effectiveness of one of these interventions and its sustainability. For that purpose, a field research in Cairo, the capital of Egypt has been conducted. The aim of the field research is to analyse one of the interventions that implemented through coordination between the Egyptian Government through the National Council of Childhood and Motherhood and one of the Egyptian NGOs Abo Soud Social Development Association NGO. His research interests include latent structure modeling, model selection, model-based cluster analysis, block clustering and statistical pattern recognition. He is one of the authors of the MIXMOD (MIXtureMODelling) software. Mohamed Nadif is Professor at the University of Paris-Descartes, France, where he is a member of LIPADE (Paris Descartes computer science laboratory) in the Mathematics and Computer Science department. His research interests include machine learning, data mining, model-based cluster analysis, co-clustering, factorization and data analysis. Cluster Analysis is an important tool in a variety of scientific areas. Chapter 1 briefly presents a state of the art of already well-established as well more recent methods. The hierarchical, partitioning and fuzzy approaches will be discussed amongst others. The authors review the difficulty of these classical methods in tackling the high dimensionality, sparsity and scalability. Chapter 2 discusses the interests of coclustering, presenting different approaches and defining a co-cluster. The authors focus on co-clustering as a simultaneous clustering and discuss the cases of binary, continuous and co-occurrence data. The criteria and algorithms are described and illustrated on simulated and real data. Chapter 3 considers co-clustering as a model-based co-clustering. A latent block model is defined for different kinds of data. The estimation of parameters and co-clustering is tackled under two approaches: maximum likelihood and classification maximum likelihood. Hard and soft algorithms are described and applied on simulated and real data. Chapter 4 considers co-clustering as a matrix approximation. The trifactorization approach is considered and algorithms based on update rules are described. Links with numerical and probabi
