In Egypt, Nymphaea lotus the white lotus, and Nymphaea caerulea, the blue lotus have been admired, painted, eaten, grown and revered for thousands of years. Spatial and temporal growth pattern of N. lotus and N. caerulea for several trends e.g. morphological traits Petiole length, Leaf area index and biomass allocation; environmental variables (water and sediment); and bio-chemical and molecular analysis are evaluated in the Nile Delta. When both species growing in mixture N. lotus showed vigorous growth form compared with N. caerulea. When N. lotus and N. caerulea growing singly the largest proportion of the biomass was allocated to the leaf blade , but in the months of fruiting the largest proportion of the biomass was allocated to the fruit. A mixed growth of both species affected the percentage of biomass allocation to the different plant parts. The differentiation between N. lotus and N. caerulea based on the analysis of seed protein and isozymes( Peroxidase and α-esterases )in seedlings showed significant variations between the two species.

This work investigated the effect of Lafia-Obi coal particle sizes on fluidized bed combustor temperature, emission characteristics and coal ash content at various operating conditions. This was with a view to determining the suitability of Lafia-Obi coal in electrical power generation. Samples of coal were obtained from natural deposits in Lafia, Obi Local Government of Nassarawa state. Proximate and ultimate analyses of the sample were carried out using standard methods to determine the carbon, ash, volatile matter, and moisture content of the coal. The calorific value of the coal was determined using a bomb calorimeter, after which the coal was combusted in a fluidized bed. The results showed that Lafia-Obi coal had 2.91wt % moisture, 27.19 % volatile matter, 18.62 wt % ash and 51.28 wt % fixed carbon content. The volatile matter content, placed Lafia-Obi in the medium-volatile bituminous rank. The characteristic quantities of gas measured from the bench-scale FBC included a mean NOx emission of 455.35, 376.69, 323.35and 277.35 ppm for coal feed sizes of 10, 15, 20 and 25 mm respectively. The study concluded that Lafia-Obi coal in a FBC is suitable for power generation

Two yeast isolates, one from teff dough and another from tella, out of total fifty isolates were screened and identified through morphological and physiological tests and found Saccharamyces species. They were compared with the commercial baker’s yeast, in terms of biomass production and leavening capacity. Their biomass was compared with respect to molasses concentration, pH, incubation temperature and period. All isolates showed maximum yield at 8% w/v molasses concentration. The three isolates differed in their biomass yield at various pHs, whereas all isolates gave highest biomass at thirty degree centigrade. Addition of supplements to the molasses medium showed 1.5- 2 fold increase in biomass. Concerning leavening action, the commercial isolate was superior. Generally, the commercial yeast was better in terms of biomass yield, whereas dough isolate was superior with respect to leavening action. Tella isolate was still competent. Further studies on molecular properties of these yeasts could improve their performance in biomass propagation and leavening action. This book assesses all these and is useful for academicians, researchers, yeast production and bakery industries.

This book provides new information on various aspects of Artemia biomass in Vietnam. These studies could contribute to the optimization of Artemia production in the salt fields, leading to a better understanding of the drying methods for Artemia biomass, and to the development of applications of Artemia biomass as a feed for aquaculture species. Firstly, results illustrated that it is possible to improve the yields of Artemia biomass by proper management of primary production as natural food combined with co-supplementation of the inert foods in the culture pond (chapter 3). Secondly, results revealed that the use of a natural convective solar drier for drying Artemia biomass can be a cheap and easily adoptable method for farmers at household level, which could produce an acceptable quality of dried Artemia for use in aquafeeds (chapter 4). Finally, the potential uses of different Artemia biomass preparations as feeds in the larviculture and nursery phases of the important cultured species was investigated. All the feeding trials proved that Artemia biomass can be used either as direct feed or as ingredient in formulated feeds in aquaculture (chapter 5).

Currently, the aims of a biomass studies are to elucidate energy and nutrient cycles. The available data concerning biomass and nutrients mostly refer to conifers and a few other major commercial hardwood species, while little information exists regarding other less important forest species of scant commercial value. Furthermore, the information concerning forest biomass is obtained from inventories where only the commercial volume of biomass is taken into account and hence the total biomass is underestimated and other fractions, such as branches and leaves – useful when size and shape is not important – are not considered. Such studies are also used to observe the effect of the vegetation on the global CO2 cycle. Cogeneration or Combined Heat and Power (CHP), is the simultaneous production in the same facility of two different forms of useful energy-electric and mechanical power plus useful thermal energy from a single primary energy source and same technological process. The principal advantage of cogeneration is that, the amount of fuel needed to produce both heat and power, is much less than total fuel needed to produce electricity and thermal energy through separate technologies. The overall efficiency of energy use in cogeneration mode can be as high as 85% or higher depending on the plant use. The units can also utilize a variety of fuels. These include solid and gaseous biomasses, natural gas, coal, light fuel oils, waste fuels and energies from industrial processes. In this study, technical and economic analysis of biomass based cogeneration in KTDA managed tea factories was carried out. The results showed that it is technically and economically viable to carry out biomass based cogeneration in the tea factories under various conditions as presented in this book.

In by-product coke oven battery, pulverized coal blend cake is carbonized in a series of coking chambers. Each cake of coal blend is contained between two heating walls in which number of inverted U-shaped flue ducts are embedded. Heat generated due to combustion of gaseous fuel in the flue duct is utilized for carbonization of coal. As the direction of flue gas changes periodically after every 30 min, and the twin coal beds on either side of heating wall are at 10 h heating lag, thermal dynamics set in the gas and walls. Numerical study of process transients reveals that positional gas temperature in the flue duct oscillates with flow reversal. The maximum and minimum temperatures show a rising trend with flow reversal during coking cycle. The temperature at the inner walls and outer walls of the flue duct show periodic rise and fall with the flow reversal, and show drastic drop at the time coke is pushed out. Similar characteristics are observed for wall surfaces facing coke bed, but local oscillation is almost damped out.

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is recently promoted as an upgrading technology for highly wet streams such as digestate from biogas plants, sewage sludge, and other waste biomass. It converts raw feedstock into a coal-like product known as hydrochar. The resulting hydrochar has fuel characteristics similar to lignite coal; potential for soil amendment, or for material use. Besides the solid phase, HTC further yields a highly contaminated waste water, which cannot be released to the environment without further processing. The aim of this study is to analyze the feasibility of treating HTC waste water by anaerobic digestion (AD). First of all, the general AD feasibility and long-term stability of HTC waste water as a sole substrate is tested by experimental means. Hereby, the focus is placed on AD process performance and potential inhibitory effects. Furthermore, the study includes the economic and energetic assessment of an industrial-scale HTC plant supplemented by anaerobic waste water treatment.

The stratum corneum (SC) plays a crucial role in keeping an optimal skin barrier function, regulating the water-holding capacity. This experimental study shows that Dynamic Vapour Sorption (DVS) can be used to assess the hydration and dehydration characteristics of SC with intact or modified lipid structure. A future application of the DVS method could be the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the damaging effect of chemical compounds, such as a single surfactant or a mixture of surfactants. We can directly test the finished product or the raw material before formulating.

The main carbon pools in forest ecosystems are the living biomass of trees and understorey vegetation and the dead mass of litter, woody debris and soil organic matter. The carbon stored in the aboveground living biomass of trees is typically the largest pool. Thus, estimating aboveground forest biomass carbon is the most critical step in quantifying carbon stocks and fluxes from forests. India is a large developing country known for its diverse forest ecosystems and is also a mega-biodiversity country. Forest ecosystems in India are critical for biodiversity, watershed protection, and livelihoods of indigenous and rural communities. The National Communication of the Government of India to the UNFCC has reported that the forest sector is a marginal source of CO2 emissions. India has formulated and implemented a number of policies and programmes aimed at forest and biodiversity conservation, afforestation and reforestation. Although some ecological theory predicts that herbivore density should increase with plant quality or biomass, few studies have directly measured the response of grassland herbivores to changes in plant production. In this study, we experimentally manipulated plant biomass by fertilizer addition and measured density and diversity of small mammals and insects (primarily Rodentia and Orthoptera). A total of 245 small mammals representing 9 species were captured during the study but three species (Peromyscus leucopus, Peromyscus maniculatus, and Sigmodon hispidus) comprised 82% of all captures. In general, the density of the rodent community was higher in fertilized than in unfertilized plots. Additionally, we detected an effect of increased plant biomass on total rodent mass. The body mass of S. hispidus was higher in the fertilized than in unfertilized plots but no effect was observed for the P. leucopus. For insect herbivores, grasshopper biomass as well as density was higher in fertilized than unfertilized plots. Because fertilization had weak effects on plant biomass, mammal and grasshopper populations may be more sensitive to changes in plant quality than quantity.

Anaerobic reactor alone was able to reduce COD (52%), turbidity (89%), EC (24%). Bioreactor was not efficient in meeting NEQs of Pakistan. So, post treatment of Anaerobic bioreactor effluents was carried out in CWs containing macrophytes (Arundo donax and Eichhornia crassipes) reduce COD (89%), turbidity (99%).Wetlands containing algal biomass were not effective in treating majority of water quality parameters. Inhibition of algal biomass was observed due to physicochemical characteristics of wastewater. The integrated treatment system consisting of IC bioreactor and macrophytes is a more suitable option to treat industrial wastewater.

The generation of biogas in a structured biogas plant based on biomass wet biomass. The simple model of a bioreactor helps to build up a simple dynamical model for predicting the biogas generation.In this chapter the gas components of biogas will be described including pollution and additional components beside methane and carbon dioxide. After collecting the biogas gas, the cleaning, the preparation and the conversion to dimethyl ether is the next step. The conversion of biogas to dimethyl ether (DME) is also known as liquefaction of biogas gas, if we use biomass biomass often called biomass to liquid fuel. Additional the necessary and sustainable property of Zero Emission is described and analyzed. The main influence on the ETS ( = emission trade system ) is analyzed and shown.

In this work the various processing stages such as briquetting, drying, combustion and flue gas emissions were investigated in order to evaluate the socio economic viability of batch production of eco fuel briquettes from biomass waste material. A set of fuel briquettes made from a mixture of 32 w/w% spent coffee grounds,23 w/w% coal fines, 11 w/w% saw dust, 18 w/w % mielie husks,10w/w% waste paper and 6w/w% pulp contaminated water were investigated. A drying system that utilizes produced briquettes as a heating medium is proposed, and here drying will be affected over a refractory brick fireplace by means of convection and radiation. A basic model was set up to include radiation with the convection to predict a drying time of 4.8 hours. The combustion of briquettes was investigated using a ceramic stove linked to the testo Portable Emission Analyzer System. This enabled an air-to-fuel ratio of 1.44 and a burning rate of 2g per minute to be established. The energy transfer efficiency for boiling a pot of water was found to be 15%. The gas emissions were found to be within the acceptable limits as set out by Occupational Safety and health agency.

Abstract A field study was carried out during a three-year period (2008 to 2010) in order to investigate on response of Coker 347 (flue-cured) Tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum L.) in vegetative growth stages to inoculation with Azotobacter chroococcum at various levels of Nitrogen (N) fertilization.Results revealed that the effect of year of experiment was significant on quantitative characteristics (except leaf length), N uptake and qualitative characteristics (except nicotine in priming). Application of N had significant effect on quantitative characteristics (except number and width of Leaf), N uptake and qualitative characteristics. Inoculation of roots with bacterium had significant effect on Cured leaf weight of cutter, yield, N uptake and qualitative characteristics. Furthermore In general, Azotobacter chroococcum is a suitable inoculant for tobacco cultivation and it could be a strategy to achieve sustainable agriculture.
