Land administration has not any unique definition. The most commonly accepted definition of land administration is set out in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Land Administration Guidelines (1996) "Land administration is the processes of recording and disseminating information about ownership, value, and use of land when implementing land management policies. The objectives of the paper are to assess the indigenous common property grazing land management; to show the effectiveness of village by laws in sustainable management of grazing lands; the options of certifying grazing land holdings in Borena area, to scrutinize the effect of population growth in natural resource management; and to recommend on the problems that are found in the Borena grazing land management. To achieve those objectives I have used secondary as well as primary qualitative data. Land is one of the most important natural resources that has to be managed properly. Like most developing countries, in Ethiopia, land degradation was a chronic problem for centuries. Though there are several factors that cause land degradation in the country, tenure insecurity among farmers has a lion share. For addressing this problem, the government has emphasized it's plan on land registration and certification program. However, there are several arguments regarding whether land titling ensures tenure security and assures land management or not. This book is therefore helpful to know about the role of land registration and certification program for sustainable land management.

Girmay Daniel, Kebede Fassil, Zenebe Amanuel Land Use Change Effect on Soil Health

Estimates indicate that a majority of the earth's land has been seriously degraded. One of the key degradation problems is poor soil health, which has been identified as a key constraint in agricultural productivity and reducing rural poverty in many parts of the tropics, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Ethiopia's economy is primarily based on agriculture. However, this sector is increasingly being confronted with a rapidly growing population, and this has resulted in land use/cover changes. The changes in land use disturbs ecosystem balance and lead to a significant change in the physical, chemical, and biological soil health thereby yield declines. Half of the Ethiopian highland arable lands are moderately to severely degrade. Tigray, the Northern region of Ethiopia, suffers from extreme land degradation and soil health deterioration. Agulae catchment, the study area which is found in Eastern Tigray also has similar problems. Since previous studies on factors affecting soil health depletion has not been made at a catchment level, this study was conducted to fill the existing knowledge gap on the effects of and use change on soil health and its implication on soil management.

In North America, concepts of Historical Range of Variability are being employed in land-management planning for properties of private organizations and multiple government agencies. The National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and The Nature Conservancy all include elements of historical ecology in their planning processes. Similar approaches are part of land management and conservation in Europe and Australia. Each of these user groups must struggle with the added complication of rapid climate change, rapid land-use change, and technical issues in order to employ historical ecology effectively. Historical Environmental Variation in Conservation and Natural Resource Management explores the utility of historical ecology in a management and conservation context and the development of concepts related to understanding future ranges of variability. It provides guidance and insights to all those entrusted with managing and conserving natural resources: land-use planners, ecologists, fire scientists, natural resource policy makers, conservation biologists, refuge and preserve managers, and field practitioners. The book will be particularly timely as science-based management is once again emphasized in United States federal land management and as an understanding of the potential effects of climate change becomes more widespread among resource managers. Eskindir Ayele Land Use Land Cover Change Detection Using Remote sensing data and GIS

Monitoring land use land cover change at all levels has become central element in sustainable development, natural resources management and environmental protection. Such daily issues of the FAO and others inspired me to conduct this work using RS data and GIS over the remnant forest area in south western part of Ethiopia, Bonga town and its environs, applying PCC change detection technique and Cellular Automata Markov LULCC model. The change detection involved processing of three Landsat images and PCC. Accordingly, a chained transition was observed between the land covers all at the expense of forest cover between the study years. The projection of change has also showed that if appropriate measures are not taken the study area will suffer from environmental degradation in the near future. Thereby, in this era of global environmental crisis, monitoring and management of land is unquestionable for all on the surface of the sphere. Thus, the empirical findings of this book can be used for detailed explanatory, impact assessment, prescription and evaluative studies on the subject. Furthermore, it will provide inputs for policy formulation and decision making at different levels.

Basin wide unisectoral development, uncoordinated uses and management practices, lack of transparent and efficient regulatory institutions, uncontrolled human interactions with the ecosystem, etc. have all led to the rise of massive social and environmental problems. This book, therefore, aims at analyzing and understanding the issues from the views and perspectives of various stakeholders, including the social, environmental and institutional contexts, and thereby initiates change for improvements. It tries to address the existing challenges of using and managing lakes in Ethiopia with the help of Soft System Methodology (SSM) and approaches of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM). The book uncovered considerable lacks of institutional coordination, environmental awareness, and stakeholder participation in managing and using lakes in Ethiopia, particularly Lake Koka. Thus, a sustained intervention of bringing coordination and collaboration among stakeholders/actors, improving transparency and environmental awareness, and fostered stakeholder participation are considered desirable and feasible to restoring the Lake, and ultimately benefit the communities and the ecosystem.

Stefan Hasenauer Remote Sensing and the Kyoto Protocol

The Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Kyoto Protocol) is one of the most outstanding and ambitious environmental programmes so far, established for reducing greenhouse gases to prevent anthropogenic climate change. Changes in land-use and forestry have a great impact on the greenhouse gas balance, and participating countries are obliged to monitor and report the status of their inventories. Remote sensing is, amongst others, a valuable technique for reporting in the sector 'Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry' (LULUCF). The author introduces the subject by explaining basic terms and definitions of the Kyoto Protocol, and examines the usage of remote sensing in forest inventories, with a special emphasis on the situation in Austria. After an in-depth review of official documentation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), like 'The Good Practice Guidance for Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry', the author presents recent and future trends in remote sensing. This book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of remote sensing, geography, forestry, and environmental sciences.

Article 27 of the Mexican Agrarian Law (1992) modified property rights in land with the goal of modernizing and developing the agrarian sector. In order to determine changes in property rights, formal and informal property rights institutions were compared prior to and following the granting of legal rights in land to women in 1971 and the alienation of ejido land in 1992 subsequent to Article 27. Productive spaces and forests (k'ax) supply food and products needed for survival in the region, as well as natural resources with market potential. Productive spaces, their users, and their purposes are multiple. The relationships between productive spaces, the family and the ejido are dynamic, and are constantly constructed, maintained and negotiated. Property rights in the ejido of Xmaben changed little following the Agrarian Land Reform provisions contained in Article 27. Women and men continue working in a complementary manner while assuring the sustainable use of their forests. The ejido resisted parcelization, ownership continues under a communal regime, and natural resource management exhibits an orientation to conservation and sustainability.

Addisu Solomon The Impact of Road Construction on Physical Land Degradation

Ethiopia provides a well-known example of a severely degraded African environment with consequent implications for food insecurity and famine. Physical land degradation after road building has been observed in Central Ethiopian highlands through gully erosion. In this research work by using a number of methods such as Field observation, gully measurement, GIS technique ,the 1997and 2006 topomap and socio-economic questionnaires, the impacts of the road on land degradation has been studied. It investigates how highway construction in the Ethiopian Highlands affects the gully erosion risk by quantifying the catchement area before and after road construction, the number of gullies created, and its characteristics in two selected cases: Addis Ababa-Fiche and Addis Ababa-Ambo. Accordingly; since the building of the road, 17 new gullies were created immediately downslope of the studied road segmensts and 8 other gullies at a radical change in its dimensions. The average catchement area is now 58.28 hectares and 74.52 on the road segments of Fiche and Ambo respectively, which is significantly different (p<0.001) from the average pre-road catchment area of 8.45 and 14.52 hectares

Environmental degradation has been recognized as high impact physical and social problem that could lead to worldwide environmental catastrophe. Evaluation of environmental degradation and natural resource depletion is therefore essential for the long-term management of natural resources and the nourishment of livelihoods that are dependent on them. The general focus of this book is to provide scientific based information and understanding about the interaction between Land use and Cover Change (LUCC), soil erosion, and sediment yield. Thereby, to propose options or scenarios for sustainable use of land and water resources. To this end, the Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia (CRV), which is located in the southern part of the country and has faced a serious land use and cover change and erosion damage, was taken as a model. This scientific result could generally be used as a tool in the environment rehabilitation program, given that, if they can be properly implemented they can significantly reduce the existing soil loss amount from the region and could create sustainable ecosystem in the future.

Banana crown rot is one of most important postharvest diseases of banana that reduces the quality and postharvest life of the fruit. It affects export of fruits in all banana producing countries including Ethiopia. There is no adequate information in Ethiopia about the importance of banana crown rot, pathogens that cause the disease and suitable methods for its management. The objectives of this study were to assess intensity of banana crown rot, to isolate and identify fungal complex associated with banana crown rot, and to evaluate the integrated effect of inorganic salt, hot water and fungicide treatments as management options of this disease. Inorganic salt at two levels integrated with three levels of water temperature and fungicide at four levels were evaluated towards the management of crown rot. The experiment was laid out in CRD with factorial combination. There was a highly significant (P<0.0001) effect on pH, TSS, TA, firmness and color of banana fruits due to combined application of treatments. In conclusion, the study revealed high occurrence and distribution of diverse fungi associated with postharvest banana crown rot.

Bulto Teshome Daba Soil Chemical Fertility in Relation to Land Use and Landscape Position

Now a day the soil fertility of high land areas, where most of the agricultural activities have been done at the escarpments of the landscape, has been decreased. These in turn decrease the productivity of land because of the removal of soil and nutrient by erosion. Therefore the use of fertilizer has increased to compensate the removed nutrients through erosion. The change in land use is also another factor to increase or decrease the fertility of the land. The application of the same fertilizer rate at each landscape position lead us wastage or inefficient. This book, therefore, provides the variability of soil chemical fertility among different land use and landscape position, as well as soil deterioration indices. The analysis help some light on this variability, and especially useful to professionals like researchers, agriculture experts and instructors etc working in areas of soil fertility and decision makers who may use fertilizer in the high land areas or any else.

Rikke Stokholm Riemer The Dynamics of Sustainable Land Management in Northern Ghana

Land degradation is rising in Northern Ghana and the national government and various NGOs are seeking to address and to prevent the derivative consequences of this development. Unsustainable farming practice contributes to land degradation, and agricultural extension service is a shared means of intervention for the promotion of sustainable farming. By taking a deeper look at the state-NGO-society dynamics, the work provides an analysis of the consequences of actors' different understandings and approaches to unsustainable land management. The analysis is focused around the interplay between historical political discourses, national policies and specific NGO interventions with relation to extension services. The analysis casts light on power relations and their influence on land management in Northern Ghana. Despite the fact that the government and the NGO used as a case are placed within different discourses regarding views on small-scale farmers' capabilities, there are indications that the gap between the two actors is closing. An increasing emphasis on decentralisation and participation is creating new opportunities and room for manoeuvre for more actors.

Parallel unsolved concerns are land tenure issues in which ancestral community ownership coexists with modern markets; tensions over land leases between ethnical groups and high population growth trigger land use intensification, and rise of emigrations, of landlessness, of unemployment and finally of poverty. Therefore, it is of a national interest to asses these trends for long term sustainable land use planning; even nearly 3500 years ago a record of regulations aimed to achieve sustainability and equality: "3 ...for six years you may plant crops inyour fields, prune your vineyards, and gather what they produce. 4 But during the seventh year, you must let the land rest. 8 Count seven of these years seven times for a total of 49 years... during that time there will be seven ·years of rest 9 and proclaim liberty to everyone living in the land... everyone is to return to their own property" (Leviti...
