Reveals how consumer choice can be better understood and influenced using social networks analysis (SNA) Intuitively, we all appreciate that we can be influenced by our friends and peers in what we do, how we behave, and what products we consume. Until recently, it has been difficult to measure this interdependence, mainly because data on social networks was difficult to collect and not readily available. More and more companies such as mobile phone carriers or social networking sites such as Facebook are collecting such data electronically. Daniel Birke illustrates in compelling real-world case studies how companies use social networks for marketing purposes and which statistical analysis and unique datasets can be used. Social Networks and their Economics: Explores network effects and the analysis of social networks, whilst providing an overview of the state-of-the art research. Looks at consumption interdependences between friends and peers: Who is influencing who through which channels and to what degree? Presents statistical methods and research techniques that can be used in the analysis of social networks. Examines SNA and its practical application for marketing purposes. Features a supporting website www.wiley.com/go/social_networks featuring SNA visualizations and business case studies. Aimed at post-graduate students involved in social network analysis, industrial economics, innovation and consumer marketing, this book offers a unique perspective from both an academic and practitioner point of view on how social networks can help understand and influence consumer behaviour. This book will prove to be a useful resource for marketing practitioners from companies where social network data is available and for consulting companies who advise businesses on marketing and social media related issues.

In her book, Lessard explains that communities ideally need four different kinds of capital to succeed: economic, social, environmental, and human. Lessard argues that all four kinds of capital must be developed simultaneously for optimal success, and that urban agriculture can facilitate this need. Furthermore, Lessard contends, urban planners must consider these needs and develop plans that incorporate space for community gardens, which add long-term value to land, restore natural spaces in urban areas, benefit residents by offering affordable local food, and in general improve the lives of residents and the health of the community by encouraging people to become more engaged and active. Additionally, Lessard concludes, community gardens encourage the building of social networks that allow for the sharing of multicultural and multigenerational values, thereby uniting the larger community and making residents feel more invested over the long term.

A multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving in community-based organizations using decision models and operations research applications A comprehensive treatment of public-sector operations research and management science, Decision Science for Housing and Community Development: Localized and Evidence-Based Responses to Distressed Housing and Blighted Communities addresses critical problems in urban housing and community development through a diverse set of decision models and applications. The book represents a bridge between theory and practice and is a source of collaboration between decision and data scientists and planners, advocates, and community practitioners. The book is motivated by the needs of community-based organizations to respond to neighborhood economic and social distress, represented by foreclosed, abandoned, and blighted housing, through community organizing, service provision, and local development. The book emphasizes analytic approaches that increase the ability of local practitioners to act quickly, thoughtfully, and effectively. By doing so, practitioners can design and implement responses that reflect stakeholder values associated with healthy and sustainable communities; that benefit from increased organizational capacity for evidence-based responses; and that result in solutions that represent improvements over the status quo according to multiple social outcome measures. Featuring quantitative and qualitative analytic methods as well as prescriptive and exploratory decision modeling, the book also includes: Discussions of the principles of decision theory and descriptive analysis to describe ways to identify and quantify values and objectives for community development Mathematical programming applications for real-world problem solving in foreclosed housing acquisition and redevelopment Applications of case studies and community-engaged research principles to analytics and decision modeling Decision Science for Housing and Community Development: Localized and Evidence-Based Responses to Distressed Housing and Blighted Communities is an ideal textbook for upper-undergraduate and graduate-level courses in decision models and applications; humanitarian logistics; nonprofit operations management; urban operations research; public economics; performance management; urban studies; public policy; urban and regional planning; and systems design and optimization. The book is also an excellent reference for academics, researchers, and practitioners in operations research, management science, operations management, systems engineering, policy analysis, city planning, and data analytics.

Since articles refer to other articles these, do provide a social network-like structure. Social networks follow certain patterns that contain relevant data about the current state or the development in the future. With these indications, we will try to use a social network Analysis tool in order to find such patterns within the field of sciences extracted from a scientific database. The tool we will be using is called TecFlow. The database is a partial extraction from ISIWeb.Within this paper, two hypotheses are analysed and described. The focus lies on the centrality and importance of the concept of RFID over time. Due to the actual relevance of social network analysis and new character of this paper, the analysis-results can lead to various future researches and studies, which are identified and described within this article.

This book is the first attempt in Ethiopia to perceive issues of minorities from strengths perspective. Prior research in the area mainly focuses on facts like exclusion, poverty, rights violation and the like that are resulted from social exclusion. Nevertheless, the strengths embedded in minority communities that enabled them to cope with the inhospitable living condition are neglected. This innovative manuscript vividly presents how social minorities are making use of their social networks for their economic and social wellbeing. Minorities, in the absence of formal and institutionalized social support mechanism tend to use their social networks as a form of insurance. Beyond this, the book also describes how minorities are using their social networks as the way out from social exclusion. The book argues that interventions targeting minorities should approach from the strengths existing in minority community.

Social network analysis is used widely in the social sciences to study interactions among people, groups, and organizations, yet until now there has been no book that shows behavioral biologists how to apply it to their work on animal populations. Exploring Animal Social Networks provides a practical guide for researchers, undergraduates, and graduate students in ecology, evolutionary biology, animal behavior, and zoology. Existing methods for studying animal social structure focus either on one animal and its interactions or on the average properties of a whole population. This book enables researchers to probe animal social structure at all levels, from the individual to the population. No prior knowledge of network theory is assumed. The authors give a step-by-step introduction to the different procedures and offer ideas for designing studies, collecting data, and interpreting results. They examine some of today's most sophisticated statistical tools for social network analysis and show how they can be used to study social interactions in animals, including cetaceans, ungulates, primates, insects, and fish. Drawing from an array of techniques, the authors explore how network structures influence individual behavior and how this in turn influences, and is influenced by, behavior at the population level. Throughout, the authors use two software packages--UCINET and NETDRAW--to illustrate how these powerful analytical tools can be applied to different animal social organi...

The concept of sustainability holds that the social, economic, and environmental factors within human communities must be viewed interactively and systematically. Sustainable development cannot be understood apart from a community, its ethos, and ways of life. Although broadly conceived, the pursuit of sustainable development is a local practice because every community has different needs and quality of life concerns. Within this framework, contributors representing the disciplines of anthropology, sociology, geography, economics, law, public policy, architecture, and urban studies explore sustainability in communities in the Pacific, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, and North America.

The objective of the book is to make accessible the ways in which social network analysis (SNA) may be used to observe, monitor and analyse systems and relationships in major construction project coalitions. Although this has been an established analytical technique in the US for some time, it is only now being developed in the UK. Having spent nearly two decades investigating major project relationships using SNA, the author has brought together mathematical and sociological methods, and major project relationships in a manner that will inspire both academic interest and a desire to apply these concepts and techniques to live construction projects. Case studies include projects from two of the UKs largest property developers, the UK Ministry of Defence and a County Council. SNA is innovative – but potentially inaccessible to project management analysts and practitioners. This book will provide clear and relevant explanation and illustration of the possibilities of using SNA in a major project environment. In addition to offering the potential; for sophisticated retrospective analysis of a wide range of systems associated with construction and engineering project coalitions, the author looks at how we might apply the network analysis findings to the design and management of project and supply chain networks.

In The Social Network Business Plan, social network expert, David Silver presents and explains 18 cutting-edge methods to create revenue for social network websites–none of which are advertising. He also predicts the demise of seemingly successful online communities such as MySpace and Facebook that rely on advertising as non-sustainable modalities. Silver describes and explains that in the future new products and services will be introduced, talked about, rated, reviewed and recommended – or killed – by online communities. One example of the 18 new revenue channels that online communities are adopting is the sale to vendors of anonymized conversations of the community members concerning those vendors' products or services. Another example is online communities who partner with the internet providers to receive payment when a particular online community's information is downloaded usinf that providers service. The other sixteen revenue channels are equally head-turning! Silver is the only angel investor, operating down where the rubber meets the road, who is investing in online communities in their infancy, and writing about which ones will win and which ones will fail.

AbstractThis dissertation examines how online brand communities create value through social practices. Building on the work of Schau et al. (2009) this study utilizes a netnographic approach and qualitatively investigates how Facebook brand Fan Pages are employed as brand community resources, to alleviate ties between members in the community and to establish consumer-brand-relationships. Through hermeneutic data analysis the following four value creating practices are discovered: 'exchanging brand narratives', 'celebrating brand love', 'support and information resource', and 'pressure valve for discontent'. The findings are drawn from qualitative interviews and netnographic observations of three Facebook brand Fan Pages. It is found that interaction among community members and engagement with the brand itself develop practices creating value on Fan Pages. Postmodern consumers want to be able to influence brands and also long for connections with other consumers; besides relationships are shaped by dialogue and interaction. Facebook Fan Pages offer means to achieve this and allow brands to become part of consumers´ lives. This study extends research on brand communities to the field of Social Networking and discovers insights helpful for marketing practitioners. The four detected practices create value and reconfirm findings of earlier studies on brand communities, but also add new insights by explaining how value is developed. The findings enh...

The existing literature particularly on Japanese heritage schools and social capital has been minimal despite the population's unique status compared to other ethnic groups. Kono applies Coleman's social capital theory to the case study of a Japanese Saturday School (JSS) in California. This study employs a mixed-method approach to examine how JSS creates social capital for families in the Japanese-speaking community, in what form and to what extent social capital manifests in this community, and what benefits families gain from these networks. Data collection through questionnaires and interviews revealed that Japanese mothers use these networks to share information regarding American school system and customs, JSS homework and events, child-development, and child rearing. Data analysis also uncovered that JSS reinforces the norms of parental involvement and Japanese-speaking children attending language schools. Although JSS is an important source of social networks for this population, findings indicated that it is not the primary source. This study highlights that issues of class must be taken into account when investigating how social capital operates in immigrant communities.

The first book demonstrating how to apply the principles of social network analysis to managing complex projects This groundbreaking book gets project managers and students up to speed on state-of-the-art applications of social network analysis (SNA) for observing, analysing, and managing complex projects. Written by an expert at the leading edge of the SNA project management movement, it clearly demonstrates how the principles of social network analysis can be used to provide a smarter, more efficient, holistic approach to managing complex projects. Project managers, especially those tasked with managing large, complex construction and engineering projects, traditionally have relied upon analysis and decision-making based upon hierarchical structures and vaguely defined project systems, much of which is borrowed from historic scientific management approaches. However, it has become apparent that a more sophisticated methodology is required for observing project systems and managing relationships with today’s more knowledgeable and demanding clients. Social network analysis (SNA) provides just such an approach. Unfortunately, existing books on social network analysis are written primarily for sociologists and mathematicians, with little or no regard for the needs of project managers – until now. The first and only book of its kind, Managing Networks in Project-Based Organisations: Offers a framework and a fully-developed approach to applying SNA theory and methodologies to large, complex projects Describes highly effective strategies and techniques for managing the iterative and transient relationships between network-defining actor roles involved in the delivery of complex projects Uses numerous real-world examples and case studies of successful applications of SNA to large-scale construction and engineering projects around the world Draws on its author’s decades of experience managing complex projects for demanding clients, as well as his extensive academic research in Project Management Managing Networks in Project-Based Organisations is an important working resource for project management professionals and consultants, especially those serving the construction and engineering industries. It is also an excellent text/reference for postgraduate students of project management and supply chain management, as well as academic researchers of project management.

The social relations among human beings play an important role in the distribution of information. The analysis of these social networks can be used as a mean for knowledge management which deals with efforts to use information more effectively. This study evaluates the knowledge creation and transfer between scholars. We propose new indices (rkc and rkca), for evaluation of the researcher’s productivity and also for the communities’ productivity (ckc and ckca), which consider the aspects of knowledge creation for researchers and communities. Besides, considering knowledge transfer or collaborative activities among researchers through studying co-authorship relationship, we quantify their collaborations and propose new indices for evaluating their collaborations which are the rkt- and rkta-indices for researchers and ckt- and ckta-indices for communities. Furthermore, we evaluate data about researchers’ output and collaboration activities within their communities. The methods used come from the theory of social networks analysis and bibliometric analysis which are extended through new factor and indices for measuring the scholars’ knowledge creation and transfer activities.

Most studies of eighteenth-century community life in America have focused on New England, and in many respects the New England town has become a model for our understanding of communities throughout the United States during this period. In this study of a mid-Atlantic town, Stephanie Grauman Wolf describes a very different way of organizing society, indicating that the New England model may prove atypical. In addition, her analysis suggests the origins of twentieth-century social patterns in eighteenth-century life.Germantown, Pennsylvania, was chosen for study because it was a small urban center characterized by an ethnically and religiously mixed population of high mobility. The author uses quantitative analysis and sample case study to examine all aspects of the community. She finds that heterogeneity and mobility had a marked effect on urban development--on landholding, occupation, life style, and related areas; community organization for the control of government and church affairs; and the structure and demographic development of the: family. Her work represents an important advance not only in our understanding of eighteenth-century American society, but also in the ways in which we investigate it.

Steven Gregory Black Corona. Race and the Politics of Place in an Urban Community

In Black Corona, Steven Gregory examines political culture and activism in an African-American neighborhood in New York City. Using historical and ethnographic research, he challenges the view that black urban communities are "socially disorganized." Gregory demonstrates instead how working-class and middle-class African Americans construct and negotiate complex and deeply historical political identities and institutions through struggles over the built environment and neighborhood quality of life. With its emphasis on the lived experiences of African Americans, Black Corona provides a fresh and innovative contribution to the study of the dynamic interplay of race, class, and space in contemporary urban communities. It questions the accuracy of the widely used trope of the dysfunctional "black ghetto," which, the author asserts, has often been deployed to depoliticize issues of racial and economic inequality in the United States. By contrast, Gregory argues that the urban experience of African Americans is more diverse than is generally acknowledged and that it is only by attending to the history and politics of black identity and community life that we can come to appreciate this complexity. This is the first modern ethnography to focus on black working-class and middle-class life and politics. Unlike books that enumerate the ways in which black communities have been rendered powerless by urban political processes and by changing urban economies, Black Corona...

Dry Bones Rattling offers the first in-depth treatment of how to rebuild the social capital of America's communities while promoting racially inclusive, democratic participation. The Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) network in Texas and the Southwest is gaining national attention as a model for reviving democratic life in the inner city--and beyond. This richly drawn study shows how the IAF network works with religious congregations and other community-based institutions to cultivate the participation and leadership of Americans most left out of our elite-centered politics. Interfaith leaders from poor communities of color collaborate with those from more affluent communities to build organizations with the power to construct affordable housing, create job-training programs, improve schools, expand public services, and increase neighborhood safety. In clear and accessible prose, Mark Warren argues that the key to revitalizing democracy lies in connecting politics to community institutions and the values that sustain them. By doing so, the IAF network builds an organized, multiracial constituency with the power to advance desperately needed social policies. While Americans are most aware of the religious right, Warren documents the growth of progressive faith-based politics in America. He offers a realistic yet hopeful account of how this rising trend can transform the lives of people in our most troubled neighborhoods. Drawing upon six years of original fieldwork, Dry Bo...

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: None, International School of New Media at the University of Lübeck, language: English, abstract: The advent of online social networking has created opportunities for brands to attract large numbers of followers, while individuals can 'add' thousands of other members as personal friends. However, how users and brands share with, manage, and control communication to and from these large 'personal' networks has become a challenge. The challenge is exacerbated further by having separate massaging interfaces for communication channels like chat, inbox messaging, status update, etc, as it currently obtains in leading social networking services. In this paper, we present Mobbo1, a service that ranks and organizes people who share similar interests (eg fans of a brand, or a user's network of friends) into concise and manageable communities called mobbos, to enable targeted messaging and intuitive control of communication to and from other network members. Every activity in the network is thus associated with a community of interest, such that all messaging in the network takes place within these mobbos, and is targeted to only members of the mobbo. The mobbo approach unifies messaging interfaces into one, to improve interaction experience and centralize control and access. An algorithm to compute and rank a brand's or user's 'pe...

All life on earth occurs in natural assemblages called communities. Community ecology is the study of patterns and processes involving these collections of two or more species. Communities are typically studied using a diversity of techniques, including observations of natural history, statistical descriptions of natural patterns, laboratory and field experiments, and mathematical modelling. Community patterns arise from a complex assortment of processes including competition, predation, mutualism, indirect effects, habitat selection, which result in the most complex biological entities on earth – including iconic systems such as rain forests and coral reefs. This book introduces the reader to a balanced coverage of concepts and theories central to community ecology, using examples drawn from terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems, and focusing on animal, plant, and microbial species. The historical development of key concepts is described using descriptions of classic studies, while examples of exciting new developments in recent studies are used to point toward future advances in our understanding of community organization. Throughout, there is an emphasis on the crucial interplay between observations, experiments, and mathematical models. This second updated edition is a valuable resource for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and established scientists who seek a broad overview of community ecology. The book has developed from a course in community ecology that has been taught by the author since 1983. Figures and tables can be downloaded for free from www.wiley.com/go/morin/communityecology

This book presents a model and a tool for discovering and analyzing scientific communities. Several approaches have been proposed to discover community structure applying clustering methods over different networks. However, most existing approaches do not allow for overlapping of communities, which are instead natural when we consider communities of scientists. The approach presented in this book combines different clustering algorithms for detecting overlapping scientific communities, based on conference publication data. Moreover, community based evaluation metrics are proposed for measuring the scientific productivity and impact of researches and researchers. The Community Engine Tool (CET) implements the algorithm and was evaluated using the DBLP dataset, which contains information on more than 12 thousand conferences. The results show that using our approach it is possible to automatically produce community structure close to human-defined classification of conferences. The approach is part of a larger research effort aimed at studying how scientific communities are born, evolve, remain healthy or become unhealthy (e.g., self-referential), and eventually vanish.

The current paper presents a trial to create an analysis about the hegemonic positions and studies in the field of the critical success factors in interorganisational networks.Starting with the definitions of the terms network, management of networks and network creation, a deeper analysis of the different kinds of networks leads to the subjects of network creation and network management. In relation to the findings of the main part, including the opinion of current studies, an analysis and comparison of the critical success factors in network management and network creation are finalizing the work.

Voice over LTE (Long Term Evolution) presents the mechanisms put in place in 4G mobile networks for the transportation of IP packets containing voice data and telephone signaling, as well as the technologies used to provide a telephone service in the IMS (IP Multimedia Sub-system) network. Despite the difficulty connected to the handover of the 4G network to the 2G/3G network, a telephone communication will not be established on the 4G network. This book analyzes the technologies that have been put in place, such as CSFB (Circuit Service FallBack), an interim solution that enables a mobile connected to the 4G network to receive an alert transmitted by the 2G/3G network. The book also goes on to develop the SIP (Session Information Protocol) on which the telephone signaling transferred by the 4G network is based, the IMS network that provides the service and defines the routing, the SRVCC (Single Radio Voice Call Continuity) mechanism that maintains communication and the TAS (Telephony Application Server) that supplies supplementary services. Contents 1. The EPS Network. 2. The LTE Interface. 3. The CSFB Function. 4. SIP and SDP Protocols. 5. The IMS Network. 6. Telephone Services. 7. The SRVCC Function. About the Authors André Perez is a consultant and teacher in networks and telecommunications. He works with industrialists and operators regarding architecture studies and leads training on the 4G and IMS networks for NEXCOM.
