Adaptation is the poor cousin of the climate change challenge – the glamour of international debate is around global mitigation agreements, while the bottom-up activities of adaptation, carried out in community halls and local government offices, are often overlooked. Yet, as international forums fail to deliver reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the world is realising that effective adaptation will be essential across all sectors to deal with the unavoidable impacts of climate change. The need to understand how to adapt effectively, and to develop appropriate adaptation options and actions, is becoming increasingly urgent. This book reports the current state of knowledge on climate change adaptation, and seeks to expose and debate key issues in adaptation research and practice. It is framed around a number of critical areas of adaptation theory and practice, including: Advances in adaptation thinking, Enabling frameworks and policy for adaptation, Engaging and communicating with practitioners, Key challenges in adaptation and development, Management of natural systems and agriculture under climate change, Ensuring water security under a changing climate, Urban infrastructure and livelihoods, and The nexus between extremes, disaster management and adaptation. It includes contributions from many of the leading thinkers and practitioners in adaptation today. The book is based on key contributions from the First International Conference on Climate Change Adaptation ‘Climate Adaptation Futures’, held on the Gold Coast, Australia, in June 2010. That three-day meeting of over 1000 researchers and practitioners in adaptation from 50 countries was the first of its kind. Readership: The book is essential reading for a wide range of individuals involved in climate change adaptation, including: Researchers, Communication specialists, Decision-makers and policy makers (e.g. government staff, local council staff), On-ground adaptation practitioners (e.g. aid agencies, government workers, NGOs), Postgraduate and graduate students, and Consultants.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: Merit, University of Birmingham, course: International Development, language: English, abstract: Climate change is a global concern with its impending threats to economies, human development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Climate change impacts are currently being observed and studies show that poor countries are the most vulnerable. Using Bangladesh as a case study, this research examines the impacts of climate change to poor, rural communities and further explores the measures that are carried out to combat its existing and future threats. This research also aims to look into the existing socio-economic vulnerabilities of Bangladesh in order to establish the linkage between climate change and development. Findings of this study show that poor communities are impacted by climate change through the loss of lives, assets and livelihoods. Adaptation to climate change is therefore necessary and should be integrated in development planning and objectives, to ensure that the most vulnerable groups are represented. Overall this research has observed that Bangladesh is still lacking this capacity, despite the spontaneous adaptation being practised by local communities. This study has further observed that the most common response in addressing climate change impacts to vulnerable communities in Bangladesh is community-based adaptation, whi...

The Philippine economy has grown rapidly since 2010, but despite this growth, poverty and inequality remain high. Two-thirds of the poor live in rural areas, and the weak performance of the agriculture sector has contributed to the slow improvement in livelihoods. The challenge for agriculture will further increase, with climate change posing a growing threat to the sector. But agricultural transformation to spur sustained growth and reduce poverty is still possible under climate change with aggressive institutional reforms and implementation of the right mix of policies and programmes. The identification of the suitable policy and programme combination requires an accurate assessment of the key drivers of agricultural growth and food security; the impacts of climate change on agriculture and the overall economy; and the effectiveness of policies for adaptation and growth. This book addresses these big issues, focusing on enhancing the adaptation capacity of the Philippine agriculture sector. It is designed to provide a much-needed base of knowledge and menu of policy options to support decision- and policymaking on agriculture, climate change, and food security. The volume uses newly generated data, modelling outputs, and innovative analyses to provide a scientific basis for a variety of adaptation measures under different sets of climate change scenarios to guide decision-makers in strategic planning and policy formulation. “As we have actually experienced in Leyte, an isla...

The adverse effects of climate change and climate variability have become some of the biggest environmental and socio-economic challenges for society, and for food supply chain actors, in particular. Serving as a serious inhibitor to the attainment of food security, climate change poses a fundamental threat to the availability, accessibility, stability and utilization of nutritious food and quality drinking water. The threat of this global phenomenon is not only apparent from the difficulties faced by all food supply chain actors, but is also felt acutely by households dependent on semi-subsistence agriculture. As evidenced by numerous studies conducted by the academic community, governmental and non-governmental organisations, climate change and climate variability will have disastrous effects on entire food supply chains across the world. This edited volume looks to address: How vulnerable are food supply chain actors to climate change and climatic variability? What adaptation strategies are they adopting? How is the resilience of food supply chains being supported? Are they being financed and/or supported by international organizations to cope with climate change? And what governmental support are they receiving to help cope with climate change? This book is an essential resource for students, lecturers, researchers, agribusinesses, marketing firms, agricultural institutions, climate change adaptation institutions, policymakers and many others with an interest in agricultu...

Agriculture continues to be an important sector fuelling economic growth. Rapidly changing climate is already affecting the production of food and feed, industrial crops, livestock, and seafood. In developing countries like India, agriculture and allied sectors contribute significantly to the gross domestic product. Therefore, evolving strategies to sustain a stable growth of the farming sector is essential for feeding a growing population and poverty alleviation in the face of global climate change. It is crucial to carry out a comprehensive analysis of different aspects of climate change to effectively combat its negative impacts on food production systems and landscapes and reap its potential benefits in agricultural production. Research findings and recommendations on topics as diverse as climate change impacts, genetic enhancement of crops, options for adaptation to climate change, opportunities and challenges for sustainable food production systems have been compiled in this volume. Capacity building for climate resilient agriculture and agriculture policy and planning is equally important to face future challenges. This book makes a compelling effort to address these major issues arising from climate change from an Indian perspective. The important and often conflicting issues in climate change impacts, adaptations and mitigations strategies are brought in to focus and a critical summary of the state-of-art in climate smart agriculture is presented for teachers, resear...

In recent years, climate change and its impacts on livelihood resource have become a key issue in Ethiopia and worldwide. The main undesirable impacts on livelihood resources include land and soil degradation, deforestation, loss of bio diversity, recurrent drought, flood, wet land and water body drying and pollution, and emergence of new crop and animal diseases. All these contribute to food insecurity and subsistence farming with a difficulty to break through the poverty trap. Thus this book has attempted to examine how community based watershed development project has a significant impact to reverse the aforementioned undesirable impacts; and will contribute to the development of climate change adaptation mechanisms, adaptive capacity, and livelihood improvements. Currently livelihood security and climate change adaptation is a prime objective of the country as well in the world; as a result, a lot of effort has been implemented to achieve it. Community based watershed development project is one of these parts while such intervention project exists; it was not properly evaluated and documented to draw lessons. The combined effects of increased temperature and diminished snowfall have resulted in a reduction of land suitable for agriculture. Most seriously affected is the people in Samzong village (at 4,100 m altitude) in Chosher VDC, Upper Mustang where villagers have been forced to relocate to an area with better water availability. Farmers were forced to adopt altering cropping pattern in terms of new cultivars and change in cultivating time to adapt with changing conditions. It is urging to develop a local level adaptation plan of action (LAPA) of the area based on the local micro climate including mitigation measures.

Municipalities are co-operating with utility companies for adaptation tasks which is a new sort of planning approach. Besides, several utility companies are merged now and formed one company like HOFOR (Metropolitan supply company). The project is interesting because new governance forms due to the corporatization of the utilities. The paper is based on the question ´How do different municipalities in HOFOR develop their plans to implement climate change adaptation?´ Besides, the approaches that municipalities follow for climate change adaptation are identified. Moreover the paper investigates how the municipalities work with their neighbour municipalities, utility companies, citizens and other stakeholders for handling rainwater and wastewater. Municipalities face some challenges due to the presence of different barriers (legislative, financial and technical) which hinder to develop institutional capacity. Therefore, the paper finds out both enabling and constraining factors for building institutional capacity regarding climate change adaptation.

A groundbreaking synthesis of climate change adaptation strategies for small island states, globally A wide ranging, comprehensive, and multi-disciplinary study, this is the first book that focuses on the challenges posed by climate change impacts on the Small Island Developing States (SIDS). While most of the current literature on the subject deals with specific regions, this book analyses the impacts of climate change across the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean, and the African and Indian Ocean regions in order to identify and tackle the real issues faced by all the small island States. As the global effects of climate change become increasingly evident and urgent, it is clear that the impact on small islands is going to be particularly severe. These island countries are especially vulnerable to rising sea levels, hurricanes and cyclones, frequent droughts, and the disruption of agriculture, fisheries and vital ecosystems. On many small islands, the migration of vulnerable communities to higher ground has already begun. Food security is an increasingly pressing issue. Hundreds of thousands of islanders are at risk. Marine ecosystems are threatened by acidification and higher seawater temperatures leading to increased pressure on fisheries—still an important source of food for many island communities. The small island developing States emit only small amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Yet many SIDS governments are allocating scarce financial and human resources in an effort to further reduce their emissions. This is a mistake. Rather than focus on mitigation (i.e., the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions) Climate Change Adaptation in Small Island Developing States concentrates on adaptation. The author assesses the immediate and future impacts of climate change on small islands, and identifies a range of proven, cost-effective adaptation strategies. The book: Focuses on the challenges of climate change faced by all of the world’s small island developing States; Provides comprehensive coverage of the latest research into the most likely environment impacts; Uses numerous case studies to describe proven, practical, and cost-effective policies, including disaster management strategies—which can be developed and implemented by the SIDS; Takes a unique, multidisciplinary approach, making it of particular interest to specialists in a variety of disciplines, including both earth sciences and life sciences. This book is a valuable resource for all professionals and students studying climate change and its impacts. It is also essential reading for government officials and the ministries of the 51 small island developing States, as well as the signatories to the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

Global climate change creates new challenges in particular for cities and regions. As centres of human activity they are especially vulnerable to climate change impacts. Adapting to a changing climate requires dealing with multiple uncertainties and complexity in order to allow proactive action. Therefore, cities and regions around the globe face the challenge of exploring flexible and innovative forms of governance which have to address specific local or regional vulnerabilities and build capacity to accommodate future change. This raises questions about the roles of stakeholders, the involvement of citizens, the composition and use of formal and informal instruments as well as the implementation of different forms of organization and regulation at the local and regional level. This book provides case studies from cities and regions all around the world. It analyses climate change adaptation from a perspective of organizing, administering and implementing local and regional adaptation strategies and measures. It looks into actors, actor-constellations, institutions and networks of climate adaptation. And, it provides the reader with knowledge about good practices and experiences to be transferred for solving adaptation challenges in cities and regions around the globe.

In Bangladesh, climate vulnerability is increasing along with poverty. But during international climate change debates, concern over 'justice' is glowing to finance adaptation. In this line, Bangladesh formulated 'National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA)' under UNFCCC guidance to abate climate change impact. The research views 'mainstreaming' as a process of promoting 'adaptation' to "transform vulnerability into (climate) security". In Bangladesh, NAPA mainstreaming is government-led and subject to use existing institutions and regulatory frameworks. Therefore, in what extend NAPA mainstreaming will be successful to promote 'socially-just adaptation to climate change' is difficult to predict. Here, the context is critically analyzed to structure institutional problems and actor dynamics to recommend policy amendments for intended mainstreaming. However, successful mainstreaming lies on balancing conflicts among diverse actors in order to promote security for the vulnerable people. Therefore, the research is arguing that the treatment of social justice must be included both in NAPA formulation and implementation phases for intended (socially-just) mainstreaming.

Also, the book tires to access whether the major mitigation of emissions (through community forest)in the mid-hills of Nepal have supported on adaptation activities or not. From this study, it was found that adaptation and mitigation cannot go together. The establishment of community forest did not play major role in adaptation activities of local people. Thus, most of the local people were involved in non-forestry activities such as agriculture, local trade, seasonal employment and out-migration to adapt against extreme weather events and climate variability.

Adaptation is a policy instrument for facing the challenges posed by climate change. Government pursues adaptation in different ways aside from simply creating awareness about climate change and its effects. It makes rules, provides financial support, and strengthens institutional capacities. These initiatives require additional resources and efforts which the developing countries, the most vulnerable to climate change, are unable to afford. For this reason, government needs to mainstream adaptation into their development planning and programs including the Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Mainstreaming involves a number of challenges, most of which are related to policy instruments, such as lack of awareness and knowledge sharing, resource shortages, organisational inefficiencies, and ineffective regulations. Bangladesh being a developing country and climatically the most vulnerable, has undertaken various policy measures for adaptation and its mainstreaming. This study has made an effort to identify the challenges associated with the adaptation mainstreaming endeavours in Bangladesh.

The global community aspires for human development for every individual and it is a core component of the millennium development goals. Every country is also aiming at human security over and above state security in pursuing national development. But the challenges posed by climate change stand in the way, thus, adaptation has become a buzzword in national and local governance discourses. Climate change adaptation (CCA) is, in fact, just a program in disaster risk reduction (DRR), which is a general approach to ensuring human security; hence, human development. Policy analysis as a process needs to be guided by a holistic view incorporating human security, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, which this book intends to achieve. The author advances his own conceptual model called "Risk Alleviation Model." This book forms the theoretical background of an ongoing research by the author on "Policy Network of Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in the Province of Albay, Philippines" as a requirement of the course Doctor of Philosophy major in Public Administration at Aquinas University of Legazpi, his third doctorate degree.

Emerging gender and climate change literature highlights the gender dimensions of vulnerability and adaptive capacity to climate variability and change. However, still in its infancy, it provides limited analysis of the mechanisms linking gender inequality to adaptation to climate change. It also tends to generalize this context-specific analysis to a global South, exhibiting a wide gap of data and analysis in the Arab Region where both the gender gap and vulnerability to climate change are pronounced. To address this, this thesis explores these vulnerability mechanisms in the context of marginalized communities with a large gender gap and climate-dependent livelihoods. It then examines approaches to address gender in adaptation to climate change. This research explores these gender-adaptation linkages through a case study of a fishing village in Alexandria, Egypt. This study argues that women’s differential vulnerability is brought about by cultural, financial, informational and institutional constraints that are directly and indirectly linked to the subordination of women in society.

Climate change can jeopardize the livelihoods of many people, particularly where its impacts are compounded by other factors or where the existing poverty makes it particularly difficult to cope with its effects. This book, therefore, provides different types of coping and adaptation strategies in rural settings with low adaptive capacity. The effects of climate change on different climate change were analyzed. Moreover constraints faced by rural community in confronting climate change effects and/or impacts were examined. Most of the constraints are of institutional support systems. Thus, it should be useful to professionals in Rural and Agricultural Development fields and others who may be carrying out policy and development interventions to improve the adaptive capacity of the rural households in the ever changing climatic conditions and the impacts which may arise from those changes.

A new integrated model system has been developed to examine this question: What are the relative effects of changes in land use and climate on the quantity and variability of river flows in relation to land use and water use management for sustainable development in a country such as Indonesia? This book describes the development of the integrated system and its implementation in Bandung basin, Indonesia. The model generates time dependent land use change patterns based on four policy-related land use change scenarios as well as time dependent climate scenarios based on IPCC SRES scenarios, and translate them into hydrological parameters for calculating the monthly discharge. The implementation results show that climate change has a greater possible impact on the change in the annual yield and monthly discharge variations and less impact on local scale discharge variation than the land use change. The superimposed effects of land use change and climate change can exacerbate the impacts, suggesting that land use management for sustainable development is very relevant. Professional in land use and water resources management and climate change adaptation will find this book useful.

Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of climate change adaptation (CCA) poses an assortment of thorny methodological challenges. Individually, none are unique to CCA, but together they represent a very distinctive conundrum facing practitioners and policy makers. Adding to this complexity further, climate change may be global in nature but its impacts, and how we respond to them through adaptation efforts, cut across scales, sectors, and levels of intervention. As investments in climate adaptation increase, organizations are seeking to measure, assess and understand an array of adaptation initiatives, and derive learnings to inform policy and praxis. This issue presents findings from many of the most important contemporary CCA program evaluation research initiatives. The chapters represent the most coherent and current collection of CCA M&E research in this emerging and important field, written by many of its leading experts. Filled with examples and insights in formulating coherent responses to methodological challenges, it will be of interest to M&E scholars and practitioners globally. This is the 147th issue in the New Directions for Evaluation series from Jossey-Bass. It is an official publication of the American Evaluation Association.

For the developing world, the impacts of climate change - from sea level rise and more potent and erratic precipitation patterns to rapid deglaciation - are becoming an increasingly frightening reality. Adaptation planning has thus become critical for policymakers in developing countries as these impacts begin to have serious detrimental economic and social implications. Due to a lack of data in many regions, the difficulty of scaling down global circulation models to the country level, and the relative nascence of adaptation theory and policy, however, there is little guidance as to what interventions are likely to be most effective, especially in post-conflict developing countries that face a number of institutional capacity constraints due to years of instability. Focusing on one such highly vulnerable country, this analysis assesses the challenges facing effective adaptation in Nepal and offers recommendations for policy makers moving forward.

Increases of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), rising temperatures, and altered precipitation patterns will affect agricultural productivity. Increases in temperature coupled with more variable precipitation will reduce productivity of crops, and these effects will outweigh the benefits of increasing carbon dioxide. Effects will vary among annual and perennial crops, and regions of the United States; however, all production systems will be affected to some degree by climate change. Agricultural systems depend upon reliable water sources, and the pattern and potential magnitude of precipitation changes is not well understood, thus adding considerable uncertainty to assessment efforts. Livestock production systems are vulnerable to temperature stresses. An animal's ability to adjust its metabolic rate to cope with temperature extremes can lead to reduced productivity and in extreme cases death.

Regions clearly differ in view of the complex patterns of climate change impact, but also regarding the given vulnerability and coping capacity. Impacts of climate change can have a marked effect on the functioning of regions and sectors of the society, if not properly addressed. Readiness to adapt to the impacts and lasting changes counts towards vulnerability of the regions. The book builds upon the findings of a project conducted under the European observation network for territorial development and cohesion (ESPON), The ESPON Climate project. Following the stipulations of the ESPON programme and the tender for this project the territorial focus is the raison d’être and methodological core of the project as a whole and its various research actions: The outcomes of each action will be focused on what impacts global climate change will have for the different European regions and how the regions can cope with the projected impacts in order to become less vulnerable to climate change. This book: Provides a comprehensive analysis of climate change impacts on 29 European regions and their local economies Takes an interdisciplinary approach dealing with the physical, social, economic, environmental, cultural and institutional aspects of climate change vulnerability and the consequences for spatial planning Builds on the findings of the ESPON Climate project with a policy focused approach Is in full colour throughout with a broad range of case studies

Climate change is one of the most serious global challenges of our time. The world community has taken many steps to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases to mitigate climate change. However, the failure of the international community to effectively address climate change has encouraged environmental activists and victims of climate change to take recourse to international as well as national legal systems. In India, the Himalayan-fed rivers, such as the Ganga River, will be seriously affected due to the melting glaciers and changes in rainfall patterns due to climate change. Moreover, climate change can cause a violation of the ‘Right to Life’ enshrined in the Constitution of India. The Indian Supreme Court has taken an active interest in protecting the environment and related rights of the people of India. This Book will shed light on the possible role the Supreme Court could play in addressing climate change issues in India by applying the broad constitutional provisions and the rich environmental jurisprudence developed by it in landmark environmental cases.

This study assesses how municipalities and regional districts in British Columbia (BC) are incorporating economic adaptation to climate change in their sustainability plans. A literature review of the economic impacts of climate change in BC is used to inform an evaluation protocol for assessing the 26 local government sustainability plans in BC. Each item in the protocol is assigned a score of 0 if it is absent from the plan, 1 if it is mentioned in the plan, and 2 if it is included with depth in the plan. The protocol has four categories: facts, goals, policies, and actions. The protocol evaluation results show that 10% of the municipalities and regional districts in BC are planning well for the economic impacts of climate change, in at least one category. It is not surprising that the strongest areas of the plans fall in the policy category, as these are typically addressed in the well-established Official Community Plan planning process. The weakest areas are typically either new aspects of planning not well established in practice or controversial. The results of this study are translated into clear recommendations for BC local governments.

Global warming or Climate Change is the biggest problem human civilization has ever faced. There are three main divisions in Climate change: Industrial pollution, Car pollution and Animal pollution. People are choosing to eat 70 billion animals every year which is at least 30% of the problem. One study states all the factors add up to 51% of the problem with animals for food. The obvious solution is a plant-based diet. Jesus and Mary were kosher vegetarians. The biblical, historical and scientific evidence is summarized showing that they were vegetarians. They are models to follow since major change is needed in the area of food people eat which affects climate change.

V.), language: English, abstract: Brazil is confronted with a high risk of vulnerability to climate change, not least due to its fragile, biologically diverse ecosystems. Taking into account its size in geographic, demographic and economic dimensions, the adaptation to climate change problems becomes highly complex. Changing rainfall patterns will mean poorer water resources and a reduced water supply. Agriculture will be affected, exacerbating the risk of famines. Less rain will also affect the hydropower supply which provides more than 80 per cent of the electricity Brazil generates. Floods, which are already a serious problem for various regions, may increase.Given abundant natural resources, Brazil started early to establish its energy sector largely on renewables. Therefore, in terms of mitigation Brazil has been doing very well. According to a research taking out by the NGO GermanWatch, that analyzed the efforts made by 56 countries being responsible for over 90 percent of CO2 emissions, Brazil is found at rank 8 (GermanWatch, 2008). But the country still needs to assess its vulnerability to climate change so it can prepare for the unavoidable effects of climate change and support policy decisions on how to adapt to the inevitable impacts. Invertebrates perform such vital roles in global ecosystems—and so strongly influence human wellbeing—that biologist E.O. Wilson was prompted to describe them as “little things that run the world.” As they are such powerful shapers of the world around us, their response to global climate change is also pivotal in meeting myriad challenges looming on the horizon—everything from food security and biodiversity to human disease control. This book presents a comprehensive overview of the latest scientific knowledge and contemporary theory relating to global climate change and terrestrial invertebrates. Featuring contributions from top international experts, this book explores how changes to invertebrate populations will affect human decision making processes across a number of crucial issues, including agriculture, disease control, conservation planning, and resource allocation. Topics covered include methodologies and approaches to predict invertebrate responses, outcomes for disease vectors and ecosystem service providers, underlying mechanisms for community level responses to global climate change, evolutionary consequences and likely effects on interactions among organisms, and many more. Timely and thought-provoking, Global Climate Change and Terrestrial Invertebrates offers illuminating insights into the profound influence the simplest of organisms may have on the very future of our fragile world.

Migration is also frequent during droughts and as communities move and pass by neighboring ones, conflict may arise in the process. However, these communities have devised ways of coping and adapting to climate change.

Apart from climate adaptation measures, the tourism industry needs to develop mitigation strategies to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Tour operators play the key role in climate protection measures in the tourism industry but may also face significant challenges due to climate change. Besides a literature analysis, empirical data was collected through qualitative interviews for this study. Two different surveys were undertaken: one with international tour operators that are already active in climate protection and one with tour operators in Namibia. The interviewed companies all used carbon offsetting by either managing an own project to compensate emissions or by cooperating with an offsetting agency. The choice seemed to be founded in each company's capacity and resources as well as in their basic philosophy. Forestry projects as self-managed offsetting projects were clearly preferred. It was identified that pivotal factors for choosing forestry projects were accessibility for trav...

Climate change is a significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods ranging from decades to millions of years. There are a number of reasons for global climate change, examples of which include the increased intensity of solar energy or the cyclicality of Earth's temperatures, volcanism, oceanic circulation cycles, biosphere impact, ultraviolet radiation variability, reflectivity, rotational variation, solar systemic changes, galaxy positional variability, albedo, human influence and so on. The present research analyse on the impact of climate change on major crops in Tamil Nadu. It is observed from the study more that there is no impact of climate change on major crops. The major crops present a very little change in the productivity due to change in climate. Their co-efficient of variations are more or less uniform except for cotton the variation in cotton is observed in the latter half of the period of study. Its rise in productivity may due to the adoption of new technology in cultivation and the use of modern implements in agriculture. Thus climate change has no direct impact of major crops.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 1,3, University of Potsdam (Chair of International Poilitics), language: English, abstract: The prospects that global climate change will have adverse effects on human societies opened up a discourse about how adaptation should be managed. In order to finance adap-tation measures, the parties of the Kyoto Protocol recently established the Adaptation Fund in 2007. In view of the limited resources that are available for adaptation, scales for the prioritization of countries according to their suspected vulnerability have been developed in the literature. Indicators of vulnerability highlighted within this literature, only reflect the indicators of human development and therefore fail to capture the complex structures of vulnerability. The collective learning approach assumes that vulnerability can be significantly decreased when governance systems adapt to external changes through collective learning processes. The present thesis connects to this notion and therefore assesses the influence of collective learning processes on the vulnerability of the Bangladeshi and Pakistani society towards flood hazards. It does so in order to find a determinant of vulnerability that is able to capture its complexity. Following a case study comparison that is based on a systematic research on primary and secondary literature this study reconfirms that vulnerability can substantiall...

Two major challenges to continued global food security are the ever increasing demand for food products, and the unprecedented abiotic stresses that crops face due to climate change.Wild relatives of domesticated crops serve as a reservoir of genetic material, with the potential to be used to develop new, improved varieties of crops. Crop Wild Relative and Climate Change integrates crop evolution, breeding technologies and biotechnologies, improved practices and sustainable approaches while exploring the role wild relatives could play in increasing agricultural output. Crop Wild Relative and Climate Change begins with overviews of the impacts of climate change on growing environments and the challenges that agricultural production face in coming years and decades. Chapters then explore crop evolution and the potential for crop wild relatives to contribute novel genetic resources to the breeding of more resilient and productive crops. Breeding technologies and biotechnological advances that are being used to incorporate key genetic traits of wild relatives into crop varieties are also covered. There is also a valuable discussion on the importance of conserving genetic resources to ensure continued successful crop production. A timely resource, Crop Wild Relative and Climate Change will be an invaluable resource for the crop science community for years to come.

Egypt is vulnerable to climate change, especially with regard to its water and land resources. Climate change will increase the evaporation losses from the High Aswan Dam Reservoir (HADR) and lead to loss of land at the northern coast due to sea level rise. In order to tackle this problem, this book assesses several adaptation tools that could be used to mitigate some of these impacts. For instance, Egypt could optimize ist water resources by decreasing evaporation losses from the HADR, or it could maximize land resources by identifying new settlement sites especially for climate migrants from the northern coastal zones. Databases on the characteristics of the HADR such as meteorological, hydrological, topographic and bed soil sedimentary data were compiled. Based on these databases, up-to-date mathematical models were developed to describe the hydrological characteristics of the HADR. Several options for reducing evaporation losses and new settlement areas were discovered and evaluated. Essential measures to preserve these areas were presented to promote sustainable development in this region.

Climate change is being observed through increased average temperatures world-wide, as well as through increased frequency of extreme events, such as floods and droughts. As climate is an uncontrollable yet essential input in the agriculture industry, the impact climate change may have on crop production in Saskatchewan is of importance. The main objective of this study is to investigate how farmers adapt to climate change by switching their crop mix, and how this crop mix may change under future climate change scenarios. A fractional multinomial logit (FMNL) model was used to assess how total area of cropland has changed over a thirty year time period. The panel data included variables to represent the land characteristics of Saskatchewan (i.e. the three major soil zones - Black, Dark Brown and Brown), climatic variables to represent average monthly temperature and precipitation, and price and policy variables in order to assess how average seeded area of each crop group changed. With these results, a simple simulation model was developed to evaluate how the area of each crop group would change under future climate scenarios.

It also offers expert suggestions on possible adaptations to reduce those impacts. The world's climate is changing more rapidly than scientists had envisioned just a few years ago, and the potential impact of climate change on world food production is quite alarming. Nowhere is the sense of alarm more keenly felt than among those who study the warming of the world's oceans. Evidence of the dire effects of climate change on fisheries and fish farming has now mounted to such an extent that the need for a book such as this has become urgent. A landmark publication devoted exclusively to how climate change is affecting and is likely to affect commercially vital fisheries and aquaculture operations globally, Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture provides scientists and fishery managers with a summary of and reference point for information on the subject which has been gathered thus far. Covers an array of critical topics and assesses reviews of climate change impacts on fisheries and aquaculture from many countries, including Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Chile, US, UK, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, India and others Features chapters on the effects of climate change on pelagic species, cod, lobsters, plankton, macroalgae, seagrasses and coral reefs Reviews the spread of diseases, economic and social impacts, marine aquaculture and adaptation in aquaculture under climate change Includes special reports on the Antarctic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea Extensive references throughout the book make this volume both a comprehensive text for general study and a reference/guide to further research for fisheries scientists, fisheries managers, aquaculture personnel, climate change specialists, aquatic invertebrate and vertebrate biologists, physiologists, marine biologists, economists, environmentalist biologists and planners.

In particular, the study investigated the social resilience and adaptive governance capacities of the institutions responsible in operating tourism services, business and managing tourism resources in the study area. The analytical and methodological approach used in the study included sphere (a dynamic social space concept), quality of governance, integrative institutional adaptation assessment frameworks and case study action research method.Institutional social resilience capacities are found to be reliant on socio-political construction of adaptation knowledge and power, produced as a result of several influencing factors. Most important ones include: site and institutions specific political, economic and environmental dispositions, the associated processes of knowledge constructions and volition action, and the social relationships and interaction of the institutions operating within the study area. Adaptive governance capacities hinge on the institutional arrangements, the procedural aspects of adaptation governance and the governmentality. These are reflective of the diverse legal frameworks, the interiority perspective of the decision making and governance practices of the NBT institutions.

If rainfall increases due to climate change in the GBM basin that will create huge water flow through the rivers of Bangladesh. Efforts have been made to examine the increase of occurrence of characteristic flood over the historical years. Time series water flow of Jamuna River at Bahadurabad of Gaibandha district is available from 1956 to 2007. Eventually the monsoon flood will be more devastating due to increase of precipitation and sea level rise that may cause more damage to crops and properties if adaptation measures are not taken. In this study, analysis shows that the land inundation and population exposure level of Gaibandha district due to climate induced monsoon flooding in 2040 since impact on land type also determines the change on agricultural yield as it is associated with cropping pattern. In order to devise adaptation options to make Bangladesh climate resilient, it is important to know, the extent, intensity and magnitude of impacts of climate change and its implication on livelihood and food security.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Law - Public Law / Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Groningen, language: English, abstract: Climate change and climate protection can be considered as the most controversial and most discussed topics in the 21st century. Especially, since the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its 4th Assessment Report on Climate Change in 2007 stating that climate change is indeed mainly caused by human activities. Hence, policy-makers all over the world are taking responsibility for climate protection in order to compensate for society's faults. 1The European Union sees itself as one of the driving forces behind fighting climate change and is keen to create and encourage policies or developments that might support their efforts. As proposed in the Lisbon and Gothenburg in 2000 and 2001, the European Union wants to be the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy with a sustainable growth, more social cohesion as well as respect for the environment. One of the opportunities to achieve this objective is bioenergy, or in particular biofuels, which may allow for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, more energy security as well as the promotion of sustainable development globally and the creation of new markets. Biofuels can be defined as solid, liquid or gas fuel consisting of, or derived from biomass, which is composed of living and recently dead biological material. The best-known products are bioetha...
