The book covers the application of numerical methods to reinforced concrete structures. To analyze reinforced concrete structures linear elastic theories are inadequate because of cracking, bond and the nonlinear and time dependent behavior of both concrete and reinforcement. These effects have to be considered for a realistic assessment of the behavior of reinforced concrete structures with respect to ultimate limit states and serviceability limit states. The book gives a compact review of finite element and other numerical methods. The key to these methods is through a proper description of material behavior. Thus, the book summarizes the essential material properties of concrete and reinforcement and their interaction through bond. These basics are applied to different structural types such as bars, beams, strut and tie models, plates, slabs and shells. This includes prestressing of structures, cracking, nonlinear stressstrain relations, creeping, shrinkage and temperature changes. Appropriate methods are developed for each structural type. Large displacement and dynamic problems are treated as well as short-term quasi-static problems and long-term transient problems like creep and shrinkage. Most problems are illustrated by examples which are solved by the program package ConFem, based on the freely available Python programming language. The ConFem source code together with the problem data is available under open source rules at concrete-fem.com. The author aims to demonstrate the potential and the limitations of numerical methods for simulation of reinforced concrete structures, addressing students, teachers, researchers and designing and checking engineers.

The work presents the theoretical basis of Additional Finite Element Method (AFEM), which is a variant of the Finite Element Method (FEM) for analysis of reinforced concrete structures at limit state. AFEM adds to the traditional sequence of problem by FEM the units of the two well-known methods of the structural design: method of additional loads and limit state method. The problem is solved by introduction of ideal failure models and additional design diagrams formed from additional finite elements, where each AFE describes the limit state reached by the main element. Hollow section reinforced concrete columns (HRC) have been used as piers for bridges and form of supports for heavy structures where compression load is critical. HRC in comparison with equivalent solid section provides high load-carrying capacity, torsional stiffness, and large reduction in self-weight, high strength-mass ratio, stiffness-mass ratio, and reduction in mass contribution to seismic response. It is also used (not often) in buildings to allow internal passage of sewer or utility pipes (improved aesthetics). Several works has shown that the Hollow section reinforced (HRC) column has greater load capacity than the equivalent solid section even when the area of concrete is equal. Therefore, the conventional load capacity formula for solid section column may not be appropriate to predict the capacity of HRC of an equal area of concrete. Empirical formula is proposed to predict the capacity of HRC based on the conventional load capacity of an equivalent solid section.

This book presents the development of a new method to predict load-deformation responses of reinforced concrete (RC) columns both with and without fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jacketing under seismic loading. In the case of the flexure mechanism, the section analysis was applied considering the confinement effect of FRP jacketing. This section analysis was combined with the shear mechanism, which was modeled based on the truss mechanism. The flexure-shear models showed significant interactions due to the reduction of reinforcement secant stiffness after yielding and concrete deterioration. The analytical method was verified using an experimental program consisting of square columns strengthened with FRP-jacketing that was tested under reversed cyclic loading, and various parameters including steel reinforcement and fiber ratio were investigated. The proposed analytical method is more effective for predicting the load-deformation relationship, including the post-peak behavior of FRP-jacketed RC columns, than the conventional analytical method and proves that fibers with high fracture strain can provide good ultimate ductility.

NoSQL time series databases (TSDBs) have risen to combine valuable NoSQL properties with characteristics of time series data encountering many use-cases. Solutions offer the efficient handling of data volume and frequency related to time series. Developers and decision makers struggle with the choice of a TSDB among a large variety of solutions. Up to now no comparison exists focusing on the specific features and qualities of those heterogeneous applications.This paper aims to deliver two frameworks for the comparison of TSDBs, firstly with a focus on features and secondly on quality. Furthermore, we apply and evaluate the frameworks on up to seven open-source TSDBs such as InfluxDB and OpenTSDB.We come to the result that the investigated TSDBs differ mainly in support- and extension related points. They share performance-enhancing techniques, time-related query capabilities and data schemas optimized for the handling of time-series data.

The goal is to obtain a model with which the prediction of the structural behav-ior of the slabs under high loading rates, depending on different parameters. The global behavior response of RC slabs (symmetric reinforcement without shear stirrups) due to a hard impact projectile and a strain rate 10-1 [1/s] has been addressed in this project-work. A complex drop-mass apparatus is used to conduct experiments and investigations on the impact dynamic behavior of RC slabsThe focus was on the response stage of the linear elastic field and how to correlate this re-sponse stage to the drop-height depending on raw experimental data.A process of data analysis for hundreds, thousands, or millions of data measurements has been carried out and an analytical model based on a system of single degree of freedom and different simplifications is shown with different verification methods. The model enables predicting bending response due to impact.The test of 11 slabs with drop-heights (1 to 4 meters) provides the required data to calibrate the analytical model as well as future numerical models.
