Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, grade: D+, The Australian National University (Fenner School of Environment and Society), course: Independent Research Project, language: English, abstract: Forest plantations are important in Indonesia for both conservation and development aspects of forest management. They can provide a sustainable supply of wood resources to meet the increasing demands of wood processing industries, rather than escalating pressure on natural forests reserved for conservation. Income from plantation forests can address the economic marginalisation of forest dependent people. Over the last three decades, three strategies have been put into practice to stimulate the development of both large-scale and small-scale plantation forestry in Indonesia: farm forestry, community forestry and community-company partnership. The success, however, has been limited. This paper reviews experience of these strategies in Indonesia, and considers this in the context of criteria and indicators for sustainable plantation development suggested in the literature. It then develops an analytical framework to assess whether a new policy proposed in Indonesia, "the People Plantation Forest" (PPF) policy, is likely to stimulate community-based tree growing activities. Our analysis suggests that out of six elements identified in the framework, local institutional and capacity building, along with production technology and market acces...

The community forestry programme in Nepal has been a major thrust area of forest management over the last two decades. Community forestry programme is operating with twin objectives of forest management and human resource development at grassroots levels by establishing community forestry users groups. The present study was carried out in three community forestry users groups of Nawalparasi district,Nepal. The study examined the functioning and governance of community forestry users groups, share of income derived from community forestry among different income groups of users, determinants of forest income, impact of community forestry on income distribution among different user groups, impact of community forestry on employment and wage rates in the labour market.Different descriptive analysis and statistical test suggests there is need to establish agroforestry system, provide more trainings, run different programmes for income generating activities, provide more employment by involving forest dependent people in different forest activities and establishing forest based industries by users group to uplift the socio-economic condition of forest dependent low income population.

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, grade: B, Wageningen University, course: Forestry / Forestry Economics, language: English, abstract: Deforestation and forest degradation account for up to 20% of the total annual anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, current approaches to address climate change include strategies to reduce deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD). Even though REDD is still under discussion within the UNFCCC framework, many REDD pilot projects are being implemented across the tropics. Securing local communities' tenure rights and their equitable access to forest conservation benefits are critical in REDD because local communities could be excluded from REDD benefits if their land and forest access rights are not adequately addressed. In Cambodia, two REDD pilot projects: Community Forestry Carbon Offset Project (CFCOP) in Oddar Meanchey province and the Seima Protection Forest Project (SPF) in Mundulkiri province, are being implemented. This study aims to contribute to the development of an effective REDD mechanism in Cambodia by examining land and forest tenures and benefit sharing arrangements under the two REDD pilot projects in Cambodia. The paper employs concepts of discourse coalitions and rules of the game to explain tenure rights and benefit sharing arrangements in the two projects. The study is based on literature review, analysis of key text documents an...

Globalization has changed the nature of many markets. Previously protected local industries have been forced to become more competitive, a situation that provides both opportunities and challenges. Key among these is the challenge of implementing responsible business practices. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is widely recognized as a worthy commitment to ensure sustainable benefit for both corporations and communities. CSR is also becoming an important base for businesses to build trust and confidence in their stakeholders, with the potential to provide a competitive edge. To ensure sustainable growth opportunities, companies should pursue the three key dimensional values of creation: Profit People Planet Well defined and strategic CSR activities will ensure an optimum balance between social, environmental, and economic factors for sustainable profits. Hence, CSR has to be embedded within the business strategy to provide a competitive edge in the areas of brand equity, corporate reputation, employee retention, and environmental conservation. Although the principles of CSR are essentially the same globally, each location still calls for different emphasis in the implementation process. Successful application of CSR principles is directly influenced by the business understanding of its business strategy in proportion to the needs of the local community. As someone who has implemented all the above activities successfully, author Sri Urip is well placed to discuss effective CSR strategies to 21st century companies.

Forestry touches on all aspects of human welfare in one way or another, which is why foresters need to play an active role in determining our collective agenda. Alastair Fraser, a lifelong forester and the co-founder of LTS International, a forestry consulting company, explains how forestry changes with political cycles and how foresters can promote healthy forests at all times. He explores critical issues such as: • forests and their connection to coal; • forest’s role in combatting floods and climate change; • illegal logging in Indonesia, Laos, and elsewhere; • tactics to promote sustainable forestry management; • plantations as a solution to tropical deforestation. From pulping in Sweden and Brazil, paper mills in Greece and India, agroforestry in the Philippines, “pink” disease in India and oil bearing trees of Vietnam, no topic is off limits. Based on the author’s life as a forester in dozens of countries, this account shows the breadth of forestry and makes a convincing case that forestry management needs to focus on managing change and achieving sustainability. Whether you’re preparing to become a forester, already in the field, or involved with conservation, the environment or government, you’ll be driven to action with Forestry Flavours of the Month

Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, grade: 1.7, University of Göttingen (Institut für Forstpolitik und Naturschutz ), 70 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Community-Based Conservation (CBC) refers to wildlife conservation efforts that involve rural people as an integral part of a wildlife conservation policy. In Africa and specifically in Cameroon, there have been changes in state policies towards natural resources management particularly forest resources. This study deals basically on Cameroon, with national forest cover of over 42% which constitutes one of its major economic resources. Since 1995, a new forest policy act was enacted (proclaimed in 1994) to accommodate two approaches, that is, Community Forestry and sustainable forest management. Conserving and enhancing biodiversity through rural peoples' involvement was one of the components of the new forest policy act of 1995. The study analyses the conditions under which the CBC policies can be successfully implemented in Cameroon, with the case of the Korup National Park (KNP) and its support zone and the former Korup Project (KP). It also investigates the interest and the relationship of the different stakeholders concerned, especially the local community. The thesis uses three hypotheses (which are limited to CBC), semi-structured questionnaires and secondary data to test or investigate successful policy implementation in the KNP by analysing...

It can be said that two factors were crucial for gaining a competitive advantage in this industry: the date of resource commitment and the degree of localization in the value chain. A foreign OEM holds a competitive advantage to (1) a foreign OEM that entered at the same time but had a lower degree of resource commitment and to (2) a foreign OEM with the same degree of resource commitment but a later entry date. Moreover, a foreign OEM holds a competitive advantage to a foreign OEM with a lower degree of localization in the value chain.

The lifecycles of nonprofit organizations have been identified and studied for decades. Whether in the idea stage, the terminal stage, or somewhere in the middle, each nonprofit organization exists to serve their respective communities. Lifecycles stages alone, however, do not fully explain the dynamics that impact and influence their existence. Capacity building is an emerging initiative gaining momentum and recognition among nonprofit community leaders for increasing nonprofit success. Nonprofit organizations can increase capacity building strategies to deliver meaningful and community-based programs and services to ensure their survival. This case study explores the organizational maturity and governing board strategies for the Texas Association of Partners in Education (TAPE) though the lens of capacity building strategies.

He proposes a new conceptual framework that better captures the characteristics, competitive strategies, and market roles of those achieving global dominance in the marketplace - the market-dominant small jurisdiction (MDSJ). Bruner identifies the central features giving rise to such jurisdictions' competitive strengths - historical, cultural, and geographical - while reflecting development strategies pursued in light of those circumstances. Through this lens, he evaluates a range of small jurisdictions that have achieved global dominance in specialized areas of cross-border finance, including Bermuda, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Switzerland, and Delaware.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of Central Lancashire, language: English, abstract: In this study an in depth investigation of successful competitive strategies for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is undertaken. The overall aim of this study is to analyse the strategic orientation of UK Manufacturing SMEs. In the process, it will test Porter's (1980, 1985) theoretical framework of generic strategies and thus evaluate firms' preferred strategic synthesis. During phase 1, Porter's framework is employed to investigate SMEs' strategic orientation as a means to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. A semi-structured questionnaire is employed and the analysis is carried out by means of factor and cluster analysis to identify strategic variables currently employed by SMEs. Despite having operated under the pretense of democracy for the entirety of its 71-years of single party rule, Mexico was not a democratic state. From 1929 to 2000 Mexico was ruled by a single authoritarian regime, the PRI. Part of the PRI's long-lasting success came from its close relationship with what was Mexico's only private television network (Televisa). During most of the PRI's rule, Televisa news coverage had been heavily biased in favor of the ruling party. This book examines the relationship between television campaign coverage and the later stages of Mexico's transition to democracy. It is the contention of this book that the media, and in particular television, was a driving force behind Mexico's democratization. But this is not the entire story. Without the 1993 privatization of Mexico's television market, this change may not have come about. Unless the markets in which mass media operate are open and competitive, the media will not function in a manner that is conducive to democratization. This book examines television's capacity to influence political behavior and also how media content can be shaped by market structure.

Study findings indicate that there are limited community development projects in the area. These projects cannot adequately meet the needs of the community and cannot sustainably lead to environment conservation. The Art of War is one of the oldest and most successful books on military strategy in the world. It has had a huge influence on Eastern military thinking, business tactics, and beyond. Sun Tzu recognized the importance of positioning in strategy and that position is affected both by objective conditions in the physical environment and the subjective opinions of competitive actors in that environment. He taught that strategy was not planning in the sense of working through a to-do list, but rather that it requires quick and appropriate responses to changing conditions. Planning works in a controlled environment, but in a competitive environment, competing plans collide, creating unexpected situations. The Art of War has also been applied to business and managerial strategies.

In this first book-length treatment of Maya intellectuals in national and community affairs in Guatemala, Kay Warren presents an ethnographic account of Pan-Maya cultural activism through the voices, writings, and actions of its participants. Challenging the belief that indigenous movements emerge as isolated, politically unified fronts, she shows that Pan-Mayanism reflects diverse local, national, and international influences. She explores the movement's attempts to interweave these varied strands into political programs to promote human and cultural rights for Guatemala's indigenous majority and also examines the movement's many domestic and foreign critics. The book focuses on the years of Guatemala's peace process (1987--1996). After the previous ten years of national war and state repression, the Maya movement reemerged into public view to press for institutional reform in the schools and courts and for the officialization of a "multicultural, ethnically plural, and multilingual" national culture. In particular, Warren examines a group of well-known Mayanist antiracism activists--among them, Demetrio Cojt!, Mart!n Chacach, Enrique Sam Colop, Victor Montejo, members of Oxlajuuj Keej Maya' Ajtz'iib', and grassroots intellectuals in the community of San Andr s--to show what is at stake for them personally and how they have worked to promote the revitalization of Maya language and culture. Remaining competitive in the retail industry of South Africa in the digital age is a major business concern. In the age of „digital natives", people are well-connected on various digital technology platforms and are digital consumers. Digital technologies offer retail organizations new innovative ways to create value by utilizing digital business strategies, processes, and products. This qualitative research study explores the perception of retail strategy experts and decision-makers toward realignment of IT and business strategies considering digital transformation in South Africa. Based on interviews with seven managers and decision-makers in the retail industry, the study reveals that digital technologies have disrupted traditional ways of doing business. The study proposes eight major recommendations, in which retail traders could innovate their business strategy to enhance value creation beyond traditional approaches to retailing. It provides a good starting point for academic research in a domain that is deficient in theoretical and empirical research on the South Africa retail sector, and offers retailing managers a conceptual model to guide them toward a digital business strategy for transient competitive advantages.

Community rural development has been at the heart of many developing countries in trying to close the rural-urban divide. ICTs through telecentre models are among strategies aimed at achieving this equitable development. In fact today, without the usage of ICTs, a society will fall behind in the path to development. There many registered challenges of streamlining ICT services in rural communities given their characteristic structural challenges and the limited contextual strategies to man their applicability. And yet; we cannot exclude ourselves from the digital age but rather ask the poor communities on what ICT can be developmental and how they spend the little they have on it. Concern should be on how to make ICTs rural responsive and affordable, the need to understand the uniqueness of such communities, allowing for community participation, enhancing the use of social capital, and above all streamlining proper management procedures that can sustain such services in rural communities. The study aim whose findings are in this book analysed the role of ICT in community rural development with specific reference to the Buwama Multi-media community Telecentre;Mpigi district, Uganda.

The arrival of several hundred Guatemalan-born workers in a Morganton, North Carolina, poultry plant sets the stage for this dramatic story of human struggle in an age of globalization. When laborers' concerns about safety and fairness spark a strike and, ultimately, a unionizing campaign at Case Farms, the resulting decade-long standoff pits a recalcitrant New South employer against an unlikely coalition of antagonists. Mayan refugees from war-torn Guatemala, Mexican workers, and a diverse group of local allies join forces with the Laborers union. The ensuing clash becomes a testing ground for "new labor" workplace and legal strategies. In the process, the nation's fastest-growing immigrant region encounters a new struggle for social justice. Using scores of interviews, Leon Fink gives voice to a remarkably resilient people. He shows that, paradoxically, what sustains these global travelers are the ties of local community. Whether one is finding a job, going to church, joining a soccer team, or building a union, kin and linguistic connections to the place of one's birth prove crucial in negotiating today's global marketplace. A story set at the intersection of globalization and community, two words not often linked, The Maya of Morganton addresses fundamental questions about the changing face of labor in the United States.

The general concept of the forestry practised in Finland and the reality of Finnish forestry differ greatly. The forests are assumed to be treated in an exemplary manner and wood production is assumed to be efficient. In reality, forestry in Finland is in a state of chaos, both as a commercial business activity and as regards forest treatment. The present research undertaking looks into the causes behind the skewed development of forestry in Finland. It also explores the matter of why this skewedness has not been examined. The main causes found are the corporative system of administration in forestry and the Finnish foresters' professional culture. Finnish foresters have been given more or less unlimited powers in guiding forestry, and they have done so from a cultural base characterised by anti-farming attitudes, inadequate business economics expertise, and societal blindness. As a result, a globally unique system of totalitarian corporatism has come into being, a system resembling the socialist system of society. This research endeavours to arouse decision-makers in Finnish forest policy to take steps aimed at making the forestry a productive livelihood once again.

This book is focused on a very successful private hospital group which consists of thirteen acute hospitals in Switzerland. This case study analyses the current strategic position and evaluates sustainable strategies to remain highly competitive also in a more dynamic market. Swiss health care is confronted with fundamental changes. On the one hand, there are increasing costs in patient treatments caused by innovative technology with new high-capacity medical devices. On the other hand, hospitals will have decreasing revenues with the introduction of the new patient classification and tariff system DRG by 2012. Invariably, the implementation of DRGs exerts pressure on hospitals to increase their level of effectiveness and efficiency, to reduce their costs related to patient treatment, and to optimize their health care processes. Due to the higher rivalry in future, hospitals are forced to choose an effective strategic orientation and to develop an appropriate strategy to remain highly competitive. It is argued in this case study that Swiss hospitals will only achieve superior performance, with a position of sustainable competitive advantage, by knowing the crucial capabilities.

The analysis shows that various significant differences but also similarities exist in the structures of both countries. The Brazilian strategy, which was established in 2003, achieved exemplary good results in the fight against hunger and poverty because the food security strategy combines structural with emergency policies and includes various approaches in order to strengthen rural development. The extensive inclusion of family farmers for the supply of the national food demand keeps Brazil relatively independent from food imports and prevents the direct transmission of extreme international price fluctuations of essential food items to low-income households. The good result in poverty alleviation in Brazil caused a significant strengthening of the people's purchasing power and thus provoked an economic growth in recent years which exceeds the capacities of the prevailing infrastructure and leads to a high demand of natural res...

Mexico is a developing society that only recently has begun to fully appreciate the importance of technology to economic success. It has had no clear vision of what the role of science is of how a scientific community can be formed. Understandably, in these circumstances, careers in science still do not have the status and recognition that such professions as medicine, engineering, and law have traditionally enjoyed. A program to train students in biomedical research was launches at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in the early 1980s as an experiment in providing the conditions necessary for fostering the growth of a scientific community in Mexico, where teaching and research have hitherto been institutionally separated. The authors, drawing on the methods and insights of anthropology, psychology, and sociology, observed the process through which the first two cohorts of students went in their training to become research scientists, in interaction with both their professors and their peers. What this study show is that, while the learning of specialized knowledge and techniques are necessary for becoming a scientist, they are not sufficient: the role of beliefs and values is crucial. The authors therefore focus attention on the ethos of science, the ideal model underlying the process of socialization-how it was transmitted to the students and how they assimilated it. Their findings will be of interest to all scholars studying the relationships of science, t...

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) - the commitment of organizations to balance financial performance with contributions to the quality of life of their employees, the local community and society at large - is gaining worldwide value as a business tool and social effort. The review of literature suggests that many studies have been undertaken globally to understand CSR as a subject of management but there have been very few studies undertaken to understand the other dimension of CSR which is beneficiary (community) aspect of CSR, especially in India. Here, the authors make an attempt to understand the CSR concept from both the dimensions of CSR i.e. management and beneficiaries of CSR (community). The authors try to understand the issues covered by the management and their implementing strategies in order to meet community needs. Also, the authors try to study the requirements and satisfaction of the community in the area where the corporates implement CSR. This type of attempt is the first one in India to study the community awareness and ist knowledge about CSR as well as the organisations working in the community. The present study also tries to measure the impact of CSR activities undertaken by the organizations in a way to have the sustainable development at village level. In this context, the present study plays a significant role in the field of Research Methodology, the field of management as well as social science, especially from the social work perspective. In recent years the concept and study of “civil society” has received a lot of attention from political scientists, economists, and sociologists, but less so from anthropologists. A ground-breaking ethnographic approach to civil society as it is formed in indigenous communities in Latin America, this volume explores the multiple potentialities of civil society’s growth and critically assesses the potential for sustained change. Much recent literature has focused on the remarkable gains made by civil society and the chapters in this volume reinforce this trend while also showing the complexity of civil society - that civil society can itself sometimes be uncivil. In doing so, these insightful contributions speak not only to Latin American area studies but also to the changing shape of global systems of political economy in general.Edward F. The planning process is shown to be an integral function of developing management strategies for future growth and the gaining of competitive advantage in these fast moving times. Budgeting is presented as a logical outgrowth and an essential part of the planning process, rather than an independent internal activity. This book emphasizes the principal factors that should be considered in planning and budgeting for the company, what management and operations personnel must know to better understand effective planning for the business, and what can be done to enhance the overall strategic and financial planning for the organization. Inside, you'll learn of the relationship between effective planning methods (long-term and short-term) and the budgeting and control processes. We will also explore the interaction and interdependence of strategic planning (long and short term), detail planning, budgeting, and monitoring processes, and will demonstrate how planning is an essential first step in the preparation of an effective budget for the organization.

Porter's (1980) book Competitive Strategy has received a great deal of attention in the strategic management literature. Here Porter claims that competitive strategy is the search for a favorable competitive position in the industry, which can erode or improve, depending on a firm's choice of strategy. He derived a conceptual typology of three generic strategies that has already become a classic among scholars. They are cost leadership, differentiation and focus strategies. Just recently Michael Raynor (2007) challenged Porter's widely accepted typology, by including another dimension in the discussion that previously did not find consideration: risk. He claims that firms that execute pure strategies are much more exposed to corporate risk than firms that execute hybrid strategies. Two arguments support his view. First Porter's and other studies include what is called a "survivor bias", meaning that firms that went bankrupt during the investigation (with a pure strategy) do not play a role in the analysis. Second firms that have hybrid strategies are much more flexible when market preferences shift and are therefore less exposed to strategic uncertainty. Raynor's work is a valuable extension to the strategic management literature that leads to an assessment of strategic choice on at least two dimensions: profitability and risk. The contribution of the study is then twofold. First Porter's typology is tested with German data. Secondly Raynor'...
