Applied Urban Ecology: A Global Framework explores ways in which the environmental quality of urban areas can be improved starting with existing environmental conditions and their dynamics. Written by an internationally renowned selection of scientists and practitioners, the book covers a broad range of established and novel approaches to applied urban ecology. Approaches chosen for the book are placed in the context of issues such as climate change, green- and open-space development, flood-risk assessment, threats to urban biodiversity, and increasing environmental pollution (especially in the “megacities” of newly industrialized countries). All topics covered were chosen because they are socially and socio-politically relevant today. Further topics covered include sustainable energy and budget management, urban water resource management, urban land management, and urban landscape planning and design. Throughout the book, concepts and methods are illustrated using case studies from around the world. A closing synopsis draws conclusions on how the findings of urban ecological research can be used in strategic urban management in the future. Applied Urban Ecology: A Global Framework is an advanced textbook for students, researchers and experienced practitioners in urban ecology and urban environmental research, planning, and practice.

Urban design enables better places to be created for people and is thus seen in Urban Design in the Real Estate Development Process as a place-making activity, rather than the application of architectural aesthetics. Urban design policy can change the 'decision environment' of developers, financiers, designers and other actors in the real estate development process to make them take place-making more seriously. This book reports diverse international experience from Europe and North America on the role and significance of urban design in the real estate development process and explores how higher quality development and better places can be achieved through public policy. The book is focused on four types of policy tool or instrument that have been deployed to promote better urban design: those that seek to shape, regulate or provide stimulus to real estate markets along with those aim to build capacity to achieve these. Urban design is therefore seen as a form of public policy that seeks to steer real estate development towards policy-shaped rather than market-led outcomes. The editors set the examples, case studies and evidence from international contributors within a substantive discussion of the impact of urban design policy tools and actions in specific development contexts. Contributions from leading urban design theorists and practitioners explore how: Masterplanning and infrastructure provision encourage high quality design Design codes reconcile developers' needs for certainty and flexibility Clear policy combined with firm regulation can transform developer behaviour Intelligent parcelisation can craft the character of successful new urban districts Powerful real estates interests can capture regulatory initiatives Stimulus instruments can encourage good design Development competitions need careful management Design review can foster developer commitment to design excellence Speculative housebuilders respond in varied ways to the brownfield design challenge Physical-financial models could help in assessing the benefits of design investment Urban design can add value to the benefit of developers and cities as a whole.

Demonstrates how a building's setting should inform and inspire rather than constrain architectural design Context-Architecture and the Genius of Place is a highly engaging, informative discussion of context in architectural theory and practice. Eric Parry, one of the UK's most highly regarded architects – whose work has been widely lauded for its innovative response to its setting – addresses the contemporary definition of context and its importance for sustainable everyday living and urban design. Looking beyond the formal agenda to explore the fundamentals that give new social and cultural perspective to this vital point of departure for designers, this book turns the urban statistician's telescopic focus on global trends inside out for a better understanding of the cultural and physical conditions that make archetypes like the Parisian Café, the London High Street, the Baltic City Square, and the Mumbai Market part of the architect's lexicon. From pavement to landscape, readers will examine how context must be taken into account at every stage in the design process. This book draws on the author's extensive experience within complex urban settings to show how the existing fabric and social conditions can provide an essential starting point for new design, offering a framework for thinking about design responses and their relationship to cultural origins of place. Discover the importance of orientation Develop a sequential understanding of urban space Hear the dialogue between parts within a whole Differentiate the uses of formal and informal Whereas existing urban settings, particularly historic city centers, are generally regarded as limiting to architectural creativity, this book presents context as grounds for inspiration rather than constraint. When used correctly, these techniques create the feeling that a new building has always been there, simply because it «fits». Context explains the methods behind brilliant architecture, helping designers create buildings that not only belong, but can provide a catalyst to urban life.

'Moving Through Sound' explores the role of mobile sonic technologies in a user's experience of urban place. It examines how mobile technologies such as the mp3 player are embedded in urban spatial practices, focusing on how listeners use these devices in urban situations to construct their experience of place. A common criticism of mobile technologies in the city maintains that these highly personal devices disconnect the user from the here and now, producing urban spaces absent of social and collective behaviour. This book argues instead that the everyday practice of moving and listening to music is a transformative activity that shapes urban experience and contributes to the identity of urban places. This book considers the future design and application of mobile sonic devices, exploring media art and critical design work as tactical interventions which engage alternative possibilities for social and site-specific listening experiences in urban place. A transdisciplinary text that spans audio culture, media studies, urban studies and art and design, 'Moving Through Sound' is written for legibility across a variety of disciplines.

Here Sir Terry Farrell, who has built an international career as an architect-planner, encourages other planners and architects to follow the biologists—look at, learn from, and, indeed, admire the nature of the forces that drive the change, and then with humility and respect work with them to nudge, anticipate and prepare for where it takes us. Searching for patterns within the apparent turbulence and complexity, he analyses the notions of urban design and urban evolution and examines whether or not they need necessarily be seen as opposing one another. The first two chapters discuss emergence as an idea in a biological and architectural context, as well as the distinction between urban design and planning in both education and practice, and the impact of other fields such as landscape design. Seven further chapters examine a range of themes embracing the importance of chain reactions in the progress of urban engineering; the character of habitation; layering; taste and context; adaptation and conversion; the advocacy of the architect-planner; and the effects of digital technology on city evolution. Farrell brings his considerable experience in practice to bear, elucidating his thoughts with examples from cities across the world, including Beijing, Hong Kong, London, New York, and Paris.

The recent developments in urban conservation and archaeology have given considerable importance to the presentation of urban archaeological remains to the public, in order to raise public awareness for their conservation. Parallel to this, urban planners seek to make better places for people through good urban design with an emphasis on sustainable urban development. In multi-layered centers of historic towns, in case the necessary measures to integrate the archaeological remains to contemporary town are not taken, these sites turn to problem areas which neither meets the goals of conservation nor urban planning. In this context, this work discusses how these remains can be integrated to everyday life in historic town centers. This is mainly achieved by analyzing two successful European cases and World Heritage Cities Tarragona and Verona. Later, the pros and cons of Tarsus, a well-known town with its rich archaeological potential will be under debate in order to discuss the deficiencies of urban conservation approaches and planning in multi-layered towns. The work should be useful to professionals in archaeology, restoration, architecture, urban planning and urban design.

The structure of a city is not the sum of its architectural shapes but the integration of these shapes into a specific and dynamic understanding of space. Public spaces become gathering points and recreational areas where neighbours can meet and contribute to socio-urban interaction. The presented projects in this book cover everything from new large neighbourhoods to the installation of street fixtures or the illumination of a small square.

Chapters provide a definition of student voice, context for public schooling in the United States, and introduce a framework for including student voice in school renewal processes. Examples guide readers to implementation of the framework to include student voices in diverse educational settings. Authentic voices of approximately 175 students interviewed by the authors express what it is that they really want from public schools and how pre K-12 educators can provide a structure for ongoing student participation in governance and the work of the school. The existing literature explores student characteristics such as poverty, cultural diversity, and what the experts believe students need public schools to provide. Within the research, urban public schools and technical reform are often explored and examined separately from conversations about what students want from schools, excluding opportunities for their voices and diverse perspectives to be heard. Listening to students describe instances of bullying or teachers' low academic expectations provides educators with opportunities to address issues that impede student learning. The uniqueness of this framework for including student voice is that it provides multiple opportunities ...

A growing urbanization, an increasing complexity of critical infrastructure and the formation of new threats are new challenges for urban areas and require a sustainable development and a stronger coping capacity with potential adverse events. Sustainability requires a strenghtening of resilience.Within this work, an integrated mathematical approach for the quantification of resilience is defined. This method allows a comprehensive evaluation of urban areas and the identification of weak spots. Statistical data are combined with physical models to assess the occurrence of multiple threats and their potential consequences. This risk based assessment is combined with time dependent recovery models to result in a quantity for resilience. Results of this framework can be applied to evaluate the effectiveness of single resilience phases, like prepare, prevent, protect, response and recover.Besides the mathematical formulation, application examples in this work assess exemplarily terroristic threats in urban surroundings with empirical information of historical events and engineering models to assess possible structural damage effects. The comparison of different urban footprints builds the basis for a resilient urban planning process.

The architecture of public open urban space has taken many forms through history, and the points of views of its proper syntax is one that has created conflict and discrepancies among architectural and urban design theorists and practitioners, following the beginning of the modern movement. The present book, a demonstration of the problem of defining civic art in relation to public open urban spaces from modernism and until today, along with the presentation of syntactic demonstrations of contemporary solutions, offers tools and actions for the architectural qualitative habitation of the contemporary public open urban environment. It involves theoretical contemplation based on fundamental bibliography on civic art definitions; analytic and illustrative syntactic representations on paradigmatic shifts of the modern movement; the involvement of heritage considerations and 'interventional' theory; and the experimental application of design solutions for selected contemporary public space problems. The overall result is a syntactic representation of case study analyses and methodological suggestions for new designs and interventions, based on fundamental theory of civic art.

The evolution of sustainability, with a practical framework for integration Regenerative Development and Design takes sustainability to the next level, and provides a framework for incorporating regenerative design principles into your current process. The Regenesis Group is a coalition of experienced design, land-use, planning, business, and development professionals who represent the forefront of the movement; in this book, they explain what regenerative development is, how and why it works, and how you can incorporate the fundamental principles into your practice. A clear, focused framework shows you how to merge regenerative concepts with your existing work, backed by numerous examples that guide practical application while illustrating regenerative design and development in action. As the most comprehensive and systemic approach to regenerative development, this book is a must-have resource for architects, planners, and designers seeking the next step in sustainability. Regenerative design and development positions humans as co-creative and mutually-evolving participants in an ecosystem—not just a built environment. This book describes how to bring that focus to your design from the earliest stages. Understand the fundamentals of regenerative design and development Learn how regenerative development contributes to sustainability Integrate regenerative development concepts into practice Examine sample designs that embody the regenerative concept To create a design with true sustainability, considerations must extend far beyond siting, materials, and efficiency. Designers must look at the place, it's inhabitants, and the purpose—the whole living ecosystem—and proceed with their work from that more humbling perspective. The finished product should itself be an ecosystem and sustainable economy, which is the root of the regenerative development approach. Sustainability has evolved, and the designer's responsibility has increased in kind. Regenerative Development and Design provides an authoritative resource for those ready to take the next step forward.

4D Hyperlocal: A Cultural Tool Kit for the Open-source City The evolution of digital tools is revolutionising urban design, planning and community engagement. This is enabling a new ‘hyperlocal’ mode of design made possible by geolocation technologies and GPS-enabled mobile devices that support connectivity through open-source applications. Real-time analysis of environments and individuals’ input and feedback bring a new immediacy and responsiveness. Established linear design methods are being replaced by adaptable mapping processes, real-time data streams and experiential means, fostering more dynamic spatial analysis and public feedback. This shifts the emphasis in urban design from the creation of objects and spaces to collaboration with users, and from centralised to distributed participatory systems. Hyperlocal tools foster dynamic relational spatial analysis, making their deployment in urban and rural contexts challenged by transformation particularly significant. How can hyperlocal methods, solutions – including enterprise-driven uses of technology for bioclimatic design – and contexts influence each other and support the evolution of participatory architectural design? What issues, for example, arise from using real-time data to test scenarios and shape environments through 3D digital visualisation and simulation methods? This study identifies critical success factors and important approaches that service companies can utilize in the design of products, services, and programs. It is common for service companies to have design teams that are responsible for facilitating the innovation process. However, these design teams might not benefit from a systematic training and knowledge transfer process. Therefore it is important to translate critical success factors and important approaches into a model that will serve as a common framework for both training and facilitating the innovation process. The research process investigated a diverse group of organizations to identify challenges and key factors for implementing innovation. The findings suggest that innovation principles, methods, and tools have a broad application for service organizations in the design of products, services, and programs. These key findings were used to construct a service innovation framework comprised of design phases, design processes, analytical and ideation methods, critical success factors, and environmental factors.

The book focuses on issues and challenges of economic transformation of the peri-urban area around Rajshahi city of Bangladesh. Peri-urban area is the transitional zone between an urban and its nearby rural area. Characteristically, the area is neither urban nor rural but it gradually attains urban characteristics and spatially shifts from urban to rural area. As a result, the economic setting in term of occupation, income, expenditure capacity, land use, land value, infrastructure, living facilities etc. of the dwellers of this area changes rapidly. And this changing process becomes influenced by a number of factors like location, distance from urban center, road network, transportation system, marketing network, employment opportunities, governmental policies and planning and so on. Though, the urban areas have development plan but due to week implementation of plan a haphazard urban growth can be found that reduces the actual competency of the area. So, it is necessary to implement the existing development plan and initiate integrated rural-urban development plan for better, planed and furnished urban development in Bangladesh.

Diploma Thesis from the year 1999 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 1, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, language: English, abstract: The following thesis elucidates the impact of the product design and the product development process on the design of a manufacturing system. In contrast to integrate constraints and restrictions of the manufacturing system and its processes into the initial design of a product , attributes and characteristics of the product design are analyzed by the way they influence and restrict the design of a manufacturing system. The upcoming hypothesis of this thesis claims latter approach to be the natural and logical one. A sophisticated design theory known as Axiomatic Design [Suh 1990] is used to embed the design of a manufacturing system into the design of the product and the product development system. The generic derivation of such an integrated design framework will allow a broad application to manufacturing and product development system design. The following paragraph outlines the background and the issues related to the motivation for this thesis. In the next step, the thesis objectives and hypothesis are stated, marking the scope and content of this academic discussion. Finally, a brief overview is provided about the content and structure of each chapter.
