Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, , course: Agricultural Economics, language: English, abstract: This study aimed to analyze the technical efficiency of sesame production in Humera area and to identify major factors that cause efficiency differentials of smallholder farmers. The objective of the study is to measure the technical efficiency of small holder farmers in sesame production. The study was conducted using a cross sectional data collected in 2015/2016-production year from a total sample of 110 households. Cobb-Douglas function was employed to estimate technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in sesame production. The finding of the study indicated that there is inefficiency in the production of sesame in the study area. The estimation of the frontier model with inefficiency variables shows that the mean technical efficiency of farmers is 0.69 (69%). This implies that production of sesame can be increased by 31 percent given the existing technological level. This indicates that the farmers did not using production inputs efficiently in such a way that they give their maximum potential. The estimated stochastic production frontier model together with the inefficiency parameters suggests that any attempt to strengthen technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in the study area must give due attention to the improvement of the principal causes for efficiency differentials such as education, age, ...

Attaining food security both at household and national level is the primary objective of all developing countries. Growing of consumer accepted high yielding crops is one of the solutions for those segments of the society that depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. To this end, maize is potentially the most productive cereal crop that prospects the industrialization of tropical countries. The use of high population densities for early maturing maize varieties under irrigated condition has recorded grain yields of up to 8.5 tons/ha which is much higher than that of the yield that is being obtained in the subsistence rain fed agriculture that is not more than 1.5 to 2 tons/ha. Thus, this technology would shed light to small farm households, commercial farmers, and agricultural extension workers who are interested to engage in irrigated agriculture using different water sources.

Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: A, , course: Agric Economics, language: English, abstract: This study examined the dynamism of price movement between markets and its implication on pricing efficiency in maize markets. Primary data were collected using interview guides. A total of 240 respondents were selected using stratified random sampling technique in 6 rural and 6 urban markets in Ogun State. Weekly retail prices of yellow and white maize for five years (January 1999-December 2003) were analysed using the Bivariate Cointegration test and the Granger causality test to detect the presence and level of price integration. In Ogun State, domestic production of maize increased by 9 percent a year between 1990 - 2001. Although the growth in maize production may be attributed to cultivating more crop area and/or the adoption of improved open pollinated and hybrid maize varieties which provide the major stimulus for increased yield on the average. Annual growth rate of maize yields was 9.08 percent during 1990 - 2001. Most of the growth came from yellow maize, which increased at 8.92 percent annually, compared with 3.57 percent for white maize. Maize is the main staple crop in East African mountains but its yield is affected by biotic and abiotic factors. Lepidopteran pests such as, Chilo partellus (Crambidae) and Busseola fusca (Noctuidae) reduced maize yield while soil elements increase the yield. In addition to enhancing maize yields, some soil element such as silicon (Si) aid plants in overcoming abiotic and biotic stresses. Hence, any factor that induces Si deficiency in soil might be detrimental to the plant growth and its resistance to insect pests and diseases. Understanding how the projected temperature increase will affect Si levels in soil and maize is crucial in promoting maize production in different agro-ecosystems in the face of climate change. This study evaluated the Si levels in both soil and maize plants cultivated along three altitudinal gradients of East African mountains (Machakos, Taita and Kilimanjaro) characterized by graded changes in climatic conditions. The study also linked the Si level in maize plants to lepidopteran pests' distribution.

This has come as a result of the increasing threat of pests and diseases in maize producing regions of the world. This book provides a new metric to the fungal disease, Phaeosphaeria leaf spot that has seen increased incidence and severity of epidemics in these growing areas. The author explores the inheritance of the disease and the combining ability of other secondary traits like early maturity in germplasm adaptable to Southern Africa. Thus the book confirms that phaeosphaeria leaf is a highly heritable disease combined with additive gene action and earliness is a moderately heritable trait. Hence, scientists, maize breeding houses and students will be able to fix resistance in their line breeding programs using novel methodologies and technologies that include marker assisted selection and recurrent selection, to generate resistant commercial hybrids. This study was conducted to assess the socioeconomic status and gender role of cereal crop production in two VDCs of Arghakhachi district. A pre-tested semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect the information from the respondents. Two VDCs were selected purposively and 60 HHs (30 from each VDC) were selected randomly for the survey. Cereal crop production has great contribution in HH income and livelihood upliftment. The study area was male dominated. Agriculture was the major occupation in the study area. The average area under rice (7.46 ropani) was more followed by wheat (4.58 ropani) and maize (4.35 ropani) in the study area. Hybrid variety of rice, HYV of maize and local variety of wheat was most popular. Seed was higher for wheat (10.73 kg) followed by rice (8.75 kg) and maize (6.5 kg).Total production of rice was higher than maize and wheat.The major problems in the study area were lack of technical assistance, lack of irrigation facilities and low quality seed.

The high population pressure in central Kenya has lead to continuous cultivation with minimal application of nutrient, resulting in nutrient depletion. A study was conducted to determine the effect of 'Push-pull' (intercropping maize with Desmodium and Napier grass) strategy management and nitrogen application on maize grain yield and soil fertility on smallholder farmer's fields in three districts of central Kenya highlands. The experiment design was a split plot design with two factors ('Push-pull' vs monoculture and manure (5 t/ha) only vs manure and fertilizer (40 kg/ha) replicated four times.I found an increase in maize yield in 'Push-pull' fields compared with monocultures with only manure added (5t/ha) and the yield increased even more with modest application of fertilizer (40KgN/ha) combined with manure (5t/ha).There was strong significant difference (p<0.001) on maize grain yield between 'Push-pull' (5.52t/ha) and monoculture (1.93t/ha) cropping systems in the three districts of central Kenya.From management perspective, the different fertilization regimes had strongest positive effect on maize yield in well managed 'Push-pull' cropping systems.

Maize kernel infection by Aspergillus flavus and later aflatoxin contaminatuion are worldwide problems in production and storage. Genetic resistance to A. flavus is most cost-effective to minimize the loss to kernels. To study the inheritance of A. flavus resistance, maize diallel and half-sib family crosses were made and genetic effects analyzed for percent kernel infection (PKI) rates using MIKI. Highly significant GCA, SCA and reciprocal effects were found. Two parents had desirable GCA effects on enhancing the average resistance performance in hybrid progeny. Three crosses had consistently negative SCA effects over year. They revealed that genetic resistance to kernel infection by A. flavus existed in maize and was identifiable and exploitable. Both diallel and half-sib analyses agreed and confirmed genotypic, additive and dominance effects. Lab-based PKI compared with the field-based demonstrated that it was more effective in screening for resistant maize germplasm. This study is instructive to breeders, geneticists, and pathologists in that these methods can be realistic solutions to identifying desired genes and breeding for genetic resistance.

Specifically, it was to assess cost-benefits of production of quality butter. Secondly, to determine the factors that influences marketable quality butter. Lastly, to analyze the constraints to the production of quality marketable Shea butter. The study was conducted in 4 communities in Tamale Metropolis because these are the communities with abundant shea butter processors. A total of 80 respondents were interviewed with 20 respondents being selected from each of the communities using snowball sampling. The average costs, average revenues and profits were calculated on yearly basis. The study revealed that averagely individual processes 3 bags (90kg each) of Shea nuts in a week and this yield 3 units of shea butter which weighs 25kg each. This yields an average of 75kgs of Shea butter selling at an average price of GHc73. A processor has an average total cost of GHc8609 per year, average total revenue of GHc10512 per year and the profit yielded is GH1622.8 per year. Even though traditional microfinance has successfully paved the way for offering financial services to low-income populations without traditional collateral, many microfinance institutions (MFIs) are still reluctant to move into rural areas and agricultural finance, due to the perceived high risks and costs.Daniela Röttger's research demonstrates how MFIs can mitigate risks and costs of lending to smallholder farmers by using a combination of proven traditional microfinance mechanisms while adapting specific loan features and lending mechanisms to the particularities of smallholder agriculture. She systematically compares traditional microfinance risk management mechanisms with agricultural microfinance approaches and identifies successful strategies. For this purpose, eight MFIs providing agricultural finance to smallholder farmers in four countries in East and West Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Benin, Cameroon) were interviewed and their loan features and agricultural lending mechanism were analyzed.The study shows that MFIs can successfully serve smallholder farmers in rural areas. However, the extent of adaptations is reason enough not to commit to such an endeavor lightly. A strong commitment combined with sound in-house knowledge of agricultural value chains and the flexibility to adapt loan terms and lending procedures to the particularities of agriculture are needed to successfully develop and sustain agricultural microfinance.

Consequently, supplemental irrigation is necessary for obtaining potential yield of wheat in rainfed areas. In addition, nitrogen fertilization can improve water use efficiency in such areas. Therefore, supplemental irrigation and nitrogen fertilization effects on production of winter wheat under rainfed climate condition were investigated in this book. To compete favourably in this new global seed world, quality and cost are and will certainly continue to be the key issues. The presence of counterfeit seed in Uganda seed market has been reported. Studies need to be conducted to investigate at which level along the seed value chain the deterioration in quality occurs. The current study assessed the change in quality of hybrid maize seed as it is transferred from seed companies (when seed has been processed and packaged) to agro-dealers. Specific objectives of the study were to determine the levels of phenotypic and genotypic variation in hybrid maize seed from seed companies and agro-dealers. A total of 120 samples of four hybrid maize varieties (improved varieties most favored by farmers) used in this study were collected from agro-dealers in 15 districts and from 3 seed companies. Alpha lattice design with two replications has been used. Data was collected on 33 morphological traits and all the 120 samples were genotyped using 128 SNP markers.The genetic distance analysis showed that agro-dealers' samples from Iganga, Masindi, Luwero, Soroti and Bukedea had high seed quality (genetically and phenotypically pure and similar to the seed companie...

In the last decade, a growing demand of consumers for improvements in pork meat quality and an increased interest in animal welfare has led to the development of alternative pig production systems, such as outdoor rearing. Up to now, several studies have been conducted to characterise autochthonous pig breeds in the Mediterranean area(Iberian, Gascon, Nero Siciliano and Cinta Senese) being raised in outdoor production systems. The main purpose of these local pig breeds is the fabrication of high quality dry-cured meat products taking advantage of their rusticity and the natural feed resources. The knowledge of the performance of modern pig genotypes in outdoor conditions is very limited probably due to lack of economic benefit. However, it might be worth testing them in regions rich in grass, shrubs and trees, where no local breeds are raised and if a differentiated quality of their end products can be demonstrated. The current book tries to review some of the factors that affect carcass characteristics and meat and fat quality of heavy commercial crossbred pigs reared outdoors. The Bt (Bacillus Thuringiensis) cotton seed production focussed on the socio-economic characteristics of contract farmers, cost and return, efficiency of resource use and problems faced by the farmers in Bt cotton seed production under different companies. The total cost of Bt cotton seed production varied from one company contract farmers to other company contract farmers. The Cobb-Douglas production function revealed that the farmers who have contracted with different seed companies, the use of seed was found to be optimum across all company contract farmers. Whereas, fertilizer resource was over utilized by farmers who have contracted with various companies. Non availability of trained labour and prevalence of high wage rate were the major constraints in case of production, where as poor technical assistance and low contract price were the contractual problems. Therefore the Bt cotton seed production technology had positive impact on Socio- economic status of farmers by increase in yield and reducing cost on inputs thereby increase in income and also standard of living.

The National Program of Biodiesel Production and Use was officially launched by the Brazilian government in 2004, having as one of its main objectives the inclusion of family agriculture into the biodiesel production chain on a sustainable basis. An important aspect of sustainability proposed by the program was the cultivation of oleaginous in association with food crops so as to assure the food security in the country. This work studied the area of Morro do Chapéu, located in a region known not only for its high levels of poverty and semi-arid climate conditions, but also for being the biggest castor producer in Brazil. This oleaginous demonstrated to be the most adaptable crop to this specific location and it has been often cultivated in association with food crops such as maize and beans. Basing on that, this work builds upon the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach so as to provide a sustainability assessment of food and castor production among family farmers in the city of Morro do Chapéu. This analysis should be especially useful to professionals in Rural and Sustainable Development fields or anyone else who may be interested in sustainabilty-related topics.

Tanzania economy depends on agriculture as its main stay, but still rural farmers suffer from poor road transport and high cost of transport of products to markets. Problems in transport sector affect agricultural production in two ways. Firstly, the time and energy spent on transport related activities reduce labour productivity because the transport charges have led the price of fertilizers to be very high, hence reduces the profits which labour could get. Secondly, increased market costs as a result of inadequate and poorly maintained roads that are passed on to farmers in terms of low farm -gate price. In many food-growing areas, crops are carried in many kilometers by head to the assembly markets or roadsides. Despite the efforts made by the government concerning road transport, still there is inadequate agricultural production in rural areas. Because of this structure of human settlement and production, road transport system assumes an extraordinarily important role in the economic development of an area. The study evaluates the impact of road transport on agricultural production. It was conducted at Mikese, Kiroka, Kinole and Mkambarani wards located in Morogoro District.
