Henry J. Rutz, Erol M. Balkan Reproducing Class. Education, Neoliberalism, and the Rise of the New Middle Class in Istanbul

"...a fresh and an important contribution ...this book presents an ethnographically rich and conceptually strong account of recent transformations in the educational field and their implications for class relations in Turkey." · Middle East JournalMiddle classes are by definition ambiguous, raising all sorts of paradoxical questions, perceived and real, about their power and place relative to those above and below them in a class-structured society. Focusing on families of the new middle class in Istanbul, the authors of this study address questions about the social construction of middle-class reality in the context of the rapid changes that have come about through recent economic growth in global markets and the global diffusion of information technology. After 1980, Turkey saw a structural transformation from state-owned and managed industry, banking, and media and communications to privatization and open markets. The idea of being middle class and the reality of middle-class practices became open for negotiation and interpretation. This study therefore offers a particularly interesting case study of an emergent global phenomenon known as the transnational middle class, characterized by their location of work in globalizing cities, development of transnational social networks, sumptuary consumption habits, and residences in gated communities. As the authors show, this new middle class associates quality education, followed by property and lifestyle issues, with the...

Tobias Erbert The emerging black middle class in South Africa and its relation to democracy

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 1,3, Free University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: 19 years after the promising democratic change in South Africa, the countrieschallenges and disparities remain ubiquitous. The huge majority of black South Africansstill lives in poverty, inequality has grown since the end of apartheid, service delivery isa permanent problem and democratic institutions are at least partly weak (Holden2012: 95).However, the new South Africa is not only signified by the aggravation of disparities.Over the last years, the emergence of a black middle class became steadily moretangible and is today a mostly undisputed phenomenon (Schrire 2005: 271; Southall2004: 539; Everatt 2011: 79). Some research has been conducted especially todetermine definition criteria and the size of a black middle class (Rivero et al. 2003;Southall 2004; Visagie, Posel 2011; Phadi, Ceruti 2011). The total middle class in SouthAfrica included 29% black South Africans in 1994, while until 2011, their share hadgrown to 49.8% of the total middle class (Holden 2012: 226-227). In absolute numbers, the black middle class made up five million people in 2011 (Visagie, Posel 2011: 8, 17)while South Africa had a total black population of around 41 million people (StatisticsSA 2011). Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Sociology - Miscellaneous, grade: 8, Vilnius University (IIRPS), course: Eastern European and Russian Studies, language: English, abstract: This master thesis aims to analyze the relationship between mass movement in Moscow in the period from 2011 until 2013 and emergence of middle class in the State. The main objective of the paper is to prove that Financial Economic Crisis of 2008 - 2010 gave a sufficient impetus for the middle class in Russia to join the protest movement against unfair elections. In work the attempt to find an answer to the questions such as the reason why middle class joined protests in 2011, what processes preconditioned this mass decision and why the protests did not go further is made. The hypothesis is formulated as following: in the basis of middle class social discontent and their accession to the protests in 2011-2013 lies economic situation, which emerged in the country after financial and economic crisis, 2008-2010 rather than political engagement. In order to test this hypothesis the following analyses were made: the description of the protests themselves, description of middle class in Russia, analysis of polls and researches on this matter, investigation and short description of economic situation in the country within the years from 2008 till 2011, and interviews with political activists from non-systematic opposition were made. Jacek Tittenbrun The Middle Class or You only live twice

Document from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Social System, Social Structure, Class, Social Stratification, University of Poznan (Institute of Sociology), language: English, abstract: The book tests the double hypothesis of the death of the middle class. Using U.S. and other developed and developing countries' materials, it seeks to answer whether the popular thesis on its demise is true, and second, it shows it is true in a conceptual sense, viz. , the term in question is a misnomer, referring to a stratum rather than a class. In the course of those investigations other key questions are examined, such as an all-important issue of socio-economic inequality: both in national and world context. The study is underpinned by an original conceptual framework encompassing social class and estate theories and ownership theory. This makes it possible to criticise many other approaches to the problems analysed. For instance, a critique of a well-known book by the French economist Th. Picketty has been undertaken, showing its numerous flaws. In addition, the analysis of the middle class concept demonstrates its defects manifest in its various definitions and usages.

David J. Hess Spirits and Scientists. Ideology, Spiritism, and Brazilian Culture

Brazilian Spiritism (espiritismo, kardecismo) is an important middle-class religious movement whose followers believe in communication with the dead via spirit mediums and in healing illnesses by means of spiritual therapies. Unlike Anglo-Saxon Spiritualists, Brazilian Spiritualists count among their number a well-developed and institutionalized intellectual elite that has reinterpreted northern hemisphere parapsychology and developed its own alternative medicine and sociology of religion. As a result, the mediation between popular religion (especially Afro-Brazilian religious practices) and the orthodoxies of the universities, the state, and the medical profession.Situating Spiritist intellectual thought in what he calls a broader ideological arena, Hess examines Spiritism in the context of religion, science, political ideology, medicine, and even the social sciences. Hess challenges the legacy of French sociologist Roger Bastide, who saw in Spiritism an elitist, middle-class ideology. In the process, Spirits and Scientists provides a new approach to middle-class religious movements in Latin America.

Such participants and stakeholders may include middle levelteachers, school psychologists and counselors, students, parents, administrators, middle level researchers, research foundations, and communitygroups. Calvinism and Middle Knowledge

Calvinism and Middle Knowledge is an anthology of essays that moves the discussion of Molinism/middle knowledge out of the philosophical arena, where it has almost exclusively remained, and into the broader theological community. In particular, it sparks a conversation between Calvinists and Molinists regarding the fruitfulness or deficiencies of middle knowledge and the feasibility or infeasibility of Calvinist use of middle knowledge without acceptance of libertarian human freedom. To this end, nine distinguished experts address such topics as the history of the doctrine of middle knowledge, the potential role of Molinism in discussions of evolution and intelligent design, Calvinist concerns with Molinism, and Calvinist appropriation of middle knowledge. This book empowers theologians, historians, biblical scholars, and pastors to join the ongoing conversation and to judge for themselves what explanatory role middle knowledge may or may not play in accounts of providence and practical theology.""The significance of this book goes beyond what one might infer from its title. Brilliant in content, readable in style, and gracious in tone, this edited volume even-handedly examines the philosophical vitality and the theological possibilities and concerns of middle knowledge when brought into conversation with other important theological issues. Well done.""--Bruce A. Little, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary""The essays contained in this volume are...

Remaking Women. Feminism and Modernity in the Middle East

Contrary to popular perceptions, newly veiled women across the Middle East are just as much products and symbols of modernity as the upper- and middle-class women who courageously took off the veil almost a century ago. To make this point, these essays focus on the "woman question" in the Middle East (most particularly in Egypt and Iran), especially at the turn of the century, when gender became a highly charged nationalist issue tied up in complex ways with the West. The last two decades have witnessed an extraordinary burst of energy and richness in Middle East women's studies, and the contributors to this volume exemplify the vitality of this new thinking. They take up issues of concern to historians and social thinkers working on the postcolonial world. The essays challenge the assumptions of other major works on women and feminism in the Middle East by questioning, among other things, the familiar dichotomy in which women's domesticity is associated with tradition and modernity with their entry into the public sphere. Indeed, Remaking Women is a radical challenge to any easy equation of modernity with progress, emancipation, and the empowerment of women. The contributors are Lila Abu-Lughod, Marilyn Booth, Deniz Kandiyoti, Khaled Fahmy, Mervat Hatem, Afsaneh Najmabadi, Omnia Shakry, and Zohreh T. Sullivan. The book is introduced by the editor with a piece called "Feminist Longings and Postcolonial Conditions," which masterfully interfaces the criti...

A book that left an indelible mark on an entire generation of readers, Cat's Cradle is one of the twentieth century's most important works-and Vonnegut at his very best.

The Industrial Revolution was a time of enormous change for the British society. Science and technology developed rapidly and brought wealth and improvement into many sectors of life; inventions like the steam engine, power looms, the spinning jenny or the expansion of the road and rail network made life easier. But on the other hand it was also the time of great misery, exploitation and tremendous class differences between a very thin and very wealthy upper-class, a rising middle-class and a very broad and to a great extent extremely impoverished working-class. But how was it like being a working-class child in Victorian England? To answer this question this work will take a close look at two of the most famous contemporary novels dealing with the depiction of children: Charles Dickens' 'David Copperfield' and 'Oliver Twist'.
