The development of culturally responsive clinical skills is vital to the effectiveness of behavioral health services. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), cultural competence "refers to the ability to honor and respect the beliefs, languages, interpersonal styles, and behaviors of individuals and families receiving services, as well as staff members who are providing such services. Cultural competence is a dynamic, ongoing developmental process that requires a long-term commitment and is achieved over time" (HHS 2003a, p. 12). It has also been called "a set of behaviors, attitudes, and policies that . . . enable a system, agency, or group of professionals to work effectively in cross-cultural situations" (Cross et al. 1989, p. 13). This Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) uses Sue's (2001) multidimensional model for developing cultural competence.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: A, Comenius University in Bratislava (Faculty of Management), language: English, abstract: In today's globalized world, international marketing becomes more and more important for businesses aiming to be successful on a global level. As Monika V. Kronbügel shows in her up-to-date dissertation, attaining cross-cultural competence has therefore become a key factor in ascertaining business's success. Cultural differences may lead to specific preferences and require an adaptation of the marketing strategy to secure a product's profitability. Accordingly, already during the phase of product development, it is helpful to analyze the cultural and social context of certain customer groups. Especially in supersaturated markets with comparable company goods and services, economic success can depend on such comparatively slight product differentiation. However, the relevance of intercultural competence has often been overlooked. This dissertation introduces a 4-phase-model for intercultural training - the ITMC-Method. It is designed to support businesses in their intercultural development. The author investigates how far businesses already make use of their possibilities to meet the cross-cultural and developmental requirements.Monika V. Kronbügel is an expert on the subject of international marketing as well as o...

Take a holistic look at an intentional educational ecosystem that builds cultural competence, a critical skill college graduates need for careers and citizenship in a diverse global society. This monograph unpacks the multilayered meanings of cultural competence and offers a term, “diversity competence,” that is more consistent with the broad spectrum of diversity learning outcomes that occur on campus. Drawing on the findings of a survey of recent college graduates now working as professionals, the monograph offers: leading-edge, integrative models that bring together the multidimensional components of the learning environment including curricular, co-curricular, and service learning, research-based factors contributing to a campus environment that encourages cultural competence, in-depth assessment and analysis of best practices, and concrete recommendations that offer a transformative pathway to the attainment of diversity competence in the undergraduate experience. This is the fourth issue of the 42nd volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Over the past decade, a large number of articles have appeared in language teaching journals as well as books describing strategies and pitfalls in forming students’ socio-cultural competence. But almost all of these sources concentrate on building students’ socio-cultural competence in general. As for teaching specific aspects of culture, useful information can hardly be found. Studying culture should be carried out step by step and consist of some particular topics like art, history, geography, etc. of the English-speaking countries(ESC). That is why teaching history of the ESC promotes direct forming socio-cultural competence, which is the main goal of foreign language teaching at a Russian secondary school. The effectiveness of any English country studies course at a secondary school is determined by using authentic materials. Authentic materials increase students’ motivation and provide them with real aspects of a target language culture. The usage of authentic materials in teaching ESC history is shown as the most effective way of building students’ socio-cultural competence.

Therefore, theoretical and practical insights in the subject of culture, its implicit and explicit differences, as well as its measurements will be provided. Due to the fact that communication - as a major cultural attribute - is the most obvious level on which cultural differences are recognized, insights in the topic of cross-cultural and intercultural communication will be given. A thorough discussion of the concept of culture and communication is beyond the scope of this paper, but in what follows, an adequate overview of recognized and well-known researchers' theories and findings will be provided. Besides giving theoretical background knowledge, it will be examined whether the internationally defined soft skills of intercultural competence can be seen as an approach towards a universal interculture, likewise a universal communication. The topic of the present thesis will be illustrated by a case study, as well as researched and evaluated by a field study conducted at one of the most culturally diverse organization - the United Nations. Findings should only expose tendencies to confirm or d...

Document from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,3, Humboldt-University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: The number of Western expatriates in China is growing; however, the rate of expatriate failure remains very high. Many multinational enterprises are now providing their expatriates with cross-cultural training (CCT), which many studies suggest is an effective way to improve expatriates' intercultural competence and their work performance overseas. This study attempts to develop an optimal methodology for CCT in China, based on review of the literature and empirical data of five semi-structured interviews. A seven-step model is developed, and each step is examined for its effectiveness and applicability in a Chinese context. Ultimately, the final model is presented in the Research Summary, and its implications are discussed in detail.

Theorists in education recommend multicultural education and cultural competence training as a way to address the achievement gap, especially in urban schools serving large populations of students of color. It is assumed that more training for educators can alleviate the issues present in these schools. Most theory has not been incorporated into practice, especially in secondary schools. Theorists continue to advocate for such educational methods, but their recommendations ignore the political and historical context of urban schools. Most research does not address the perceptions of those who practice in the field. Those who work in these urban, high-poverty schools can lend a perspective that is absent in most of the literature, and can help explain why these recommendations are not implemented as recommended.

Leadership is a universal phenomenon that has been consistently identified as playing a critical role in the success or failure of organizations. This book begins with an overview of the history and evolution of leadership studies and traces some of the major "schools" of leadership studies that have attracted the interest of researchers since the 19th century. Also discussed are the various theories and models of leadership that have emerged over that period. The author introduces cross-cultural leadership studies and then discusses cross-cultural competencies of global leaders, which are the practical applications of the information available from the researchers to the day-to-day activities of leaders in business organizations around the world. Finally, the book assesses the research on cross-cultural leadership, culture, and leadership in developing countries.

This book raises significant questions related to cross-cultural management, human resources policies, business ethics, and intercultural values through the study of Chinese companies in Middle Africa. Based on the five cross-cultural dimensions developed by G. Hofstede (2001, 2008), it increases our understanding of Chinese companies’ management practices and related intercultural problems. Moreover, this book allows identifying and differentiating which traditional cultural values are dominant among Middle Africans and Chinese working in Middle Africa, respectively. The findings and implications of this study aim to enhance Chinese and other foreign companies operating in Middle Africa to implement better cross-cultural and management strategies. In addition, it offers practical guidelines to have a better understanding of culture diversity between Chinese and Middle Africans. This study will help foreign companies in Middle Africa to foster their growth, and to achieve success, employee development and wellness.

Major changes are occurring in the United States population and the nation's health care institutions and delivery systems. Significant disparities in health status exist across population groups. But the health care enterprise, with all its integrated and disparate parts, has been slow to respond. Written by three nationally known scholars and experts, Diversity and Cultural Competence in Health Care: A Systems Approach is designed to provide health care students and professionals with a clear understanding of foundations, philosophies, and processes that strengthen diversity management, inclusion, and culturally competent care delivery. Focusing on current practice and health care policy, including the recently passed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA), this textbook integrates strategic diversity management, self-reflective leadership, and the personal change process with culturally and linguistically appropriate care into a cohesive systems-oriented approach for health care professionals. The essentials of cultural competence and diversity management covered in this text will be helpful to a wide variety of students because they encompass principles and practices that can be realistically incorporated into the ongoing work of any health care field or organization. Each chapter contains learning objectives, summary, key terms, and review questions and activities designed to allow students to understand and explore concepts and practices identified throughout the text.

Cultural Competence in America's Schools: Leadership, Engagement and Understanding focuses on explicatingthe impact of culture and issues of race and ethnicity on student learning, teacher and leadership efficacy, andeducational policy making in our nation's public school system. The authors agree with Levin (2012), whopointed out that the challenge of dealing effectively with racial and ethnic diversity in education in traditionallyhomogeneous societies is a global problem. One indicator of this point is revealed in a U.S. study that was commissionedby the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality, which reported on the serious consequencesfor student achievement and teacher effectiveness in the face of "the gap between teacher training andthe realities of the classroom when it comes to teaching diverse populations and students with special needs."(Public Agenda, 2008, p. 2).

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Oxford Brookes University, language: English, abstract: Global markets are changing faster than ever and increasing international competition makes it necessary for managers to understand not only the domestic culture but also the host country's culture. Derived from globalisation, successful cross-cultural management is gaining in importance and its need for understanding of cultural differences becomes essential. Because of this it is argued that, with the increasing importance of a cross-cultural understanding, Hofstede's (1980) model of cultural dimensions gains proportional importance and attracts notice at the same time. His study is widely used in global operating organisations within trainings and workshops. The first step of effective cross-cultural management is the awareness that cultural differences exist and domestic strategies might fail in host countries.Even though, Hofstede's (1980) cultural study is the most important one and widely known, there are many other cultural studies, which are only partly supporting his study. For each and every model of cultural identifications arouse praise and criticism and Hofstede was not spared by criticism. The main criticism refers to the methodology Hofstede used and many authors questioned its validity and reliability. Another major critique is that the nearly 40-years old survey f...

New applications of the ABC's model of CulturalUnderstanding and Communication are presented and discussed in this new volume, based on studies done inthe United States, Canada and Europe. In this ground-breaking project, the authors describe how the ABC'smodel challenged and changed the cultural perceptions of those who participated in it, even those who wereinitially highly resistant to such possibilities. Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 74%, University of Warwick, language: English, abstract: International marketers are trying to encourage positive electronic word-of-mouth (eWoM) about their products and services. The question of whether consumers in different cultures respond differently to eWoM is critical if marketers are to leverage the potentially global power of eWoM. The central objective of this study is to critically evaluate whether espoused national cultural values at the individual level influence the effect of eWoM on consumers' purchase intention.Prior cross-cultural eWoM research mostly studied culture at the country level. This paper draws on perspectives in cultural psychology and cross-cultural research that argue that individuals espouse national cultural values to different degrees. Therefore, predicting the influence of culture on individuals' behaviour necessitates to assess cultural values by personality tests at the individual level of analysis. Yet, no research can sufficiently answer the question of how individual level culture may influence the effect of eWoM on purchase intention. The present research addresses this gap by measuring espoused national cultural values of power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism/collectivism, and masculinity/ femininity at the individual level of analysis and investigating their ...

A volume in Contemporary Language EducationSeries Editor: Terry Osborn, University of South Florida Sarasota-ManateeThere is pressure on world language educators to prepare learners with 21st century skills to meet the challenges of an increasingly interconnected globalized world. The need for change was summarized in the 2007 report of the MLA Ad Hoc Committee on Foreign Languages that suggested the implementation of curricular reform by developing students' "translingual and transcultural competence" (p. 3) which allows someone "to operate between languages" (p.237). How-ever, the integration of such a meaningful cultural component in instructed language learning is a complex topic. This book recognizes the difficulty world language educators face to achieve the goals of the MLA report, particularly at beginning levels of instruction in target language use classrooms. Accordingly, this book informs instructed language learning and teaching by bridging developmental theories from the fields of intercultural competence with second language pedagogies-particularly communicative language teaching (CLT) and literacy-based approaches-providing examples of practical applications inside the classroom and beyond. It is intended to support the many FL educators who have consistently reported that they are struggling to incorporate meaningful cultural instruction into their practice (Fox & Diaz-Greenberg 2006; Phillips & Abbott, 2011; Sercu, 2005).This book...

What have international relations, mergers and cross-discipline innovation got in common? They share a dependence on the ability to create mutual understanding between people from different cultural backgrounds. As organisations become more global, and innovative development more urgent, developing the skills to get the best from difference becomes a necessity rather than an option. Cultural Intelligence (CI) is a progressive approach to thinking about culture that aims to provide the reader with a better understanding of what goes on when people with different cultural backgrounds meet, including the emotional drivers and irrational reactions. It introduces a way of thinking about culture as a dynamic and socially constructed phenomenon rather than a fixed set of rules, and suggests ways to benefit from cultural complexity using it as a resource and route to innovation.Cultural Intelligence is for leaders and specialists who have a commitment to bridging and benefiting from differences, and who are looking for alternatives to the traditional cultural concepts. This book gives an introduction to CI and to the dynamic approach to culture. It contains four themed chapters each of which provides an in-depth discussion of one cultural field. Cultural Intelligence contains numerous examples from the authors' teaching, research and consultancy work. It utilises experiences gained from work on the development of international groups from diversity projects, cross-disciplinary pr...

How should we positively interact with others from all types of backgrounds in ways that acknowledge God's diversity in the world? What are effective ways to engage in cross-cultural collaboration endeavors that honor and respect the culture of those involved with our efforts? The principles of cultural humility, beginning with intentional relationship building, provide a framework that can guide our cross-cultural interactions and partnerships with others both locally and globally, in ways that respect both the culture and backgrounds of others. In this book, Eloise Hockett and John Muhanji share their unique experiences of cross-cultural collaboration using the principles of cultural humility, primarily in Kenya. From Mt. Elgon, to a village in rural Kenya, to working with teachers in schools, John and Eloise describe each project through the lens and perspective of an American and a Kenyan. Within these narratives, Eloise and John also share their journey of how they learned to engage and work with one another and learn from each other. John and Eloise believe their collaborative efforts incorporating the themes of cultural humility fully demonstrate how God can work through each person regardless of their cultural background, in order to carry out His plan in the world.""At the heart of this book is a deep commitment by the authors to recognize and honor each other's cultures. The examples in this book are both encouraging and useful in themselves, but they...
