Marco Hölzel Crisis Management, CSR, and Crisis Communication in the Volkswagen Emissions Scandal

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Cumbria, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this research is to examine the crisis management and crisis communication of the German car company Volkswagen (VW) in its recent emissions scandal. This study aims to analyse the applied crisis management and communication strategies of Volkswagen by evaluating the crisis´ impact on each stakeholder group. To accomplish this, the research adopts a single case study design, and it considers a significant amount of qualitative, secondary data. The research first notes that Volkswagen failed in its crisis management prevention tactics, as it was unable to detect the crisis at an early stage. Moreover, the study reveals that VW implemented several immediate crisis management measures for a quick turnaround management. Instead of concentrating on a specific crisis response theory, it is evident that VW made use of different crisis response strategies. VW took full responsibility for the crisis, promising transparency, but it also shifted the blame onto a small group of employees, suggesting that the company was also the victim of human error. Finally, the study reveals the significant impact of the crisis on each stakeholder group, which reveals that VW struggled to regain stakeholder trust and did not keep its promise of transparency. Thus, the study concludes by presenting future recommen...

It provides an overview on how women feel about the process, legitimacy and handling by the public services such as police and civil and crown courts. There is a reoccurring theme in understanding "secondary victimization" throughout this dissertation on various levels of domestic violence. This work provides understanding on the reasons why women fear to report abuse to the police and how effective the police are in dealing with domestic violence. This study overlooks on the availability of support on domestic violence victims, how prevalent they are and do they actually work. Domestic violence is a subject area of great sensitivity. Due to the sensitivity of the research topic area, it can be difficult in securing accurate and reliable sources of information. In many cases, the definition of the term "domestic violence" can seem daunting and vague. This study brings forward an in-depth understanding into the definition of domestic violence. For numerous years, domestic violence has been regarded as a private matter, and not of public concern. However, it can affect families and deprive a society from aspiration, hope and wellbeing. Making War, Forging Revolution: Russia's Continuum of Crisis, 1914-1921

Offering a fundamental reinterpretation of the emergence of the Soviet state, Peter Holquist situates the Bolshevik Revolution within the continuum of mobilization and violence that began with World War I and extended through Russia's civil war. In so doing, Holquist provides a new genealogy for Bolshevik political practices, one that places them clearly among Russian and European wartime measures. From this perspective, the Russian Revolution was no radical rupture with the past, but rather the fulcrum point in a continent-wide era of crisis and violence that began in 1914. While Tsarist and Revolutionary governments implemented policies for total mobilization common to other warring powers, they did so in a supercharged and concentrated form. Holquist highlights how the distinctive contours of Russian political life set its experience in these years apart from other wartime societies. In pursuit of revolution, statesmen carried over crisis-created measures into political life and then incorporated them into the postwar political structure. Focusing on three particular policies - state management of food; the employment of official violence for political ends; and state surveillance - Holquist demonstrates the interplay of state policy and local implementation, and its impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. Making War, Forging Revolution casts a new light on Russia's revolution and boldly inserts it into the larger story of the Great War and twentieth-century European his...

Violence, Peace & Everyday Modes of Justice and Healing in Post-Colonial Africa

Violence in its various proportions, genres and manifestations has had an enduring historical legacy the world over. However, works speaking to approaches aimed at mitigating violence characteristic of Africa are very limited. As some scholars have noted, Africans have experienced cycles of violence since the pre-colonial epoch, such that overt violence has become banalised on the African continent. This has had the effect of generating complex results, legacies and perennial emotional wounds that call for healing, reconciliation, justice and positive peace. Yet, in the absence of systematic and critical approaches to the study of violence on the continent, discourses on violence would hardly challenge the global matrices of violence that threaten peace and development in Africa. This volume is a contribution in the direction of such urgently needed systematic and critical approaches. It interrogates, from different angles and with inspiration from a multidisciplinary perspective, the contentious production and resilience of violence in Africa. It calls for a paradigm shift – an alternative approach that forges and merges African customary dispute resolution and Western systems of dispute resolution – towards a framework of positive peace, holistic restoration, sustainable development and equity. The book is a welcome contribution to students and practitioners in security studies, African studies, development studies, global studies, policy studies, and political science.

Hussein Alasrag Global Financial crisis and Islamic finance

The world economy is currently facing a severe global crisis that has spilled from the financial sector to the real economy. The crisis can be traced back to July 2007 with the liquidity crisis due to the loss of confidence in the mortgage credit markets in the United States. The hope was that the crisis would be restricted to financial markets, with few repercussions on the real economy and the rest of the world. This hope was shattered in September 2008 as the crisis entered an acute phase, with strong downward fluctuations in the stock markets, substantially reduced rates of economic growth, and accompanied by increases in unemployment. The severity of this crisis has led to the evaluation of the foundations of the capitalist financial system and the search for ideas and solutions.Islamic economists contend that Islamic finance has an alternative that would prevent the recurrence of a similar crisis. This paper tries to note the main causes and the impacts of the financial and economic crisis. In addition to discuss the belief that the Islamic finance is a viable alternative to the ailing global financial system.

Sunday Akindele Theory and Practice of Crisis Management

This book addresses the issue of crisis management using conflict perspective as a theoretical framework. In the process, attempt was made to examine the concepts of "conflict" "crisis" and "crisis management" as well as the role of third party intervention/mediation in a crisis. As a point of departure, the concept of theory was examined as the necessary basis for observational consideration of phenomena (e.g. crisis, conflicts, and violence) that are germane to friction-free human existence. Within this context, the affinity between theory and practice was examined in the context of real life relationship among Theorists, Academics, Policy Makers and other Practitioners. Relevant examples across the world (where applicable) were cited. What governments and their military/security advisers should do to effectively handle crisis situations was stressed. We concluded that the need for unbiased and mutually beneficial crisis resolution must not be taken for granted. We equally contended that a friction-free governance and peaceful existence is possible in spite of the fact that human society will continue to be characterized by conflicts and multiplicity of interests.

Leiry Cornejo Chavez Structural Sexual Violence in the Peruvian Military

The aim of this work is the better understanding of structural sexual violence against women. Through a human rights approach, the author examines the link between the gendered discriminatory policies against women and the occurrences of sexual violence against female soldiers within the Peruvian Armed Forces. This empirical study demonstrates that whereas civil and political rights must be respected and enforced, the satisfaction of socio-economic rights is also a key element for the prevention of violence against women. The cases of discrimination in the access to education, to labor, and reproductive rights within the Peruvian Military demonstrate that, in reality, women are forced to remain in situations where they are exposed to sexual violence because of the existence of structural organizations perpetuating the unequal power relations between men and women.

Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera, Abel Chikanda Living With Xenophobia. Zimbabwean Informal Enterprise in South Africa

This report examines the impact of xenophobic violence on Zimbabweans who are trying to make a living in the South African informal sector and finds that xenophobic violence has several key characteristics that put them at constant risk of losing their livelihoods and their lives. The businesses run by migrants and refugees in the informal sector are a major target of South Africa’s extreme xenophobia. Attitudinal surveys clearly show that South Africans differentiate migrants by national origin and that Zimbabweans are amongst the most disliked. This report is based on a survey of informal sector enterprises in Cape Town and Johannesburg; and 50 in-depth interviews with Zimbabwean informal business owners in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Polokwane who had been affected by xenophobic violence. In many areas, community leaders are ineffective in dealing with the violence and, in some cases, they actively foment hostility and instigate attacks. The fact that migrant entrepreneurs provide goods, including food, at competitive prices and offer credit to consumers is clearly insufficient to protect them when violence erupts. However, the deep-rooted crisis in Zimbabwe makes return home a non- viable option and Zimbabweans instead adopt several self-protection strategies, none of which is ultimately an insurance against xenophobic attack. The findings in this report demonstrate that xenophobic violence fails in its two main aims: to drive migrant entrepreneurs out of business and to ...

A corporate crisis situation is an integral part of a company's life cycle. On average, the probability that corporate manager will experience a corporate crisis situation within five years is almost as high as 82%. Multinational companies in particular face a higher potential because of their various external environments, extended media and respectively public interest in their actions, and consequently their dependence on different public opinions as well as the much wider impacts because of their publics' spread. Well planned and organisationally integrated multinational crisis communication is a key success factor in a crisis situation. The book also disclosed that male refugees and intimate partners of female refugees were the prime gender based violence perpetrators of female refugees in Mai Ayni refugee camp. Moreover, the study revealed that idleness, economic dependency, physical insecurity, lack of awareness, collapse of social and family structure as well as poor reporting, coordination and legal enforcement mechanisms were identified as causes/risk factors for gender based violence against female refugees in refugee camp. Moreover, men's feeling of 'loss of power' in the camp, which challenges male's identity as superior to female, led male refugees to anger and makes female refugees vulnerable to different forms of gender based violence. Shonhiwa Kudakwashe Options for Peace-Building in Zimbabwe

Conflicts in Zimbabwe have caused communities to be divided along political party lines. Violence has been widespread and this has exacerbated economic collapse and social polarization. The acts of violence and loss of life and property and livelihoods must be addressed urgently. In high density urban areas this violence continues to divide communities. This research seeks to explore options for peace-building in high density urban areas of Zimbabwe. The Chitungwiza high density area outside Harare was used as a population of the study. The objectives of the research were to find out residents' concepts of peace, to explore the history of political violence in Chitungwiza and to seek options for peace-building in Zimbabwe's urban areas. The study drew on Laderach's reconciliation and peace-building framework, Chester Crockers's framework for institutional peace-building. The researcher used a qualitative approach to field research and interviewed victims and perpetrators of violence as well as elected leaders in the Chitungwiza community. The main findings was that options for peacebuilding should start with orientation towards peace-building for community residents.

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - General and Theories, grade: 1,3, University of Lisbon (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences), course: North American Policy, language: English, abstract: The Cuban Missile Crisis symbolizes a real showdown between two superpowers - the United States and the Soviet Union. Until today, the puzzling events occurred in the crisis prompt numerous questions, particularly in the scientific area. This research paper, therefore, aims the conduction of illustrating the main happenings during the crisis in order to be able to analyze them by using the three Conceptual Models developed by Graham T. Allison and Philip Zelikow. Allison and Zelikow use these models to give an adequate explanation of how the process of decision-making proceeds, taking the crisis as a case study and answering three main questions: Why did the Soviet Union decide to place offensive missiles in Cuba? Why did the United States respond to the missile deployment with a blockade? Why did the Soviet Union withdraw the missiles? For a better evaluation, this research paper thus, contextualizes firstly the Cuban Missile Crisis by explicating occurrences in the Cold War. Secondly, the suspenseful thirteen days during the Cuban Missile Crisis will be illuminated. Thirdly, in the last chapter, the models are outlined and used to answer the three puzzling questions stated above.

Ioannis Derziotis Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Law - Criminal process, Criminology, Law Enforcement, grade: 2:1, The University of Surrey, language: English, abstract: On 13-15 June 2014, the largest global summit that has ever been held to end sexual violence in conflicts took place at ExCel London with the participation of 1,700 delegates and 123 country delegations, including 79 Ministers. The Summit agreed to take practical measures in order to tackle impunity for the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and to begin changing global attitudes towards these crimes. This makes obvious that, although some progress has been made in recognizing rape and other acts of sexual violence as war crimes, the international and national response thereon remains to this day unclear and inadequate. The case of Bosnia offers a unique example to understand the systematic and organized form that sexual violence can take during war, its consequences and the steps required to prevent future crimes of such nature, as this was the first time in history that sexual violence was officially recognized as a war crime and a crime against humanity. This qualitative study explores if and how sexual violence was used as a weapon of war in Bosnia, its aim and the socio-cultural circumstances under which it took place. Drawing upon findings from six semi-structured interviews with a group of individuals who have expertise on this topic and from official documents of the ICTY, the conclusion of...

Gene Klann Crisis Leadership

Nothing tests a leader like a crisis. The highly charged, dramatic events surrounding a crisis profoundly affect the people in an organization and can even threaten the organization's survival. But there are actions a leader can take before, during, and after a crisis to effectively reduce the duration and impact of these extremely difficult situations. At its center, effective crisis leadership is comprised of three things--communication, clarity of vision and values, and caring relationships. Leaders who develop, pay attention to, and practice these qualities go a long way toward handling the human dimension of a crisis. In the end, it's all about the people.

Schools, once a haven to which parents could send their children with confidence regarding their safety and protection have become an environment in which violence is a frequent visitor. Recent reports tell us that serious problems disrupt teaching and learning and threaten the safety of children and educators in many schools in the Western Cape. These problems include gang violence. This study aims to assess the level of learners' exposure to gang violence and their participation in high-risk behaviour in and outside a selected high school. In response to the findings recommendations are made to stabilise and develop the infrastructure and to empower both educators and learners to address the difficulties they may experience. By means of this study the researcher wishes to raise the awareness of educators and school officials of the scope and nature of the problem and to encourage school officials to assume more responsibility in this area and to recognise quality public education as one of the most important tools in early intervention to prevent or deter juvenile delinquency or gang involvement.

This book describes how the entrenched power of global elites has created a deadly cycle of violence, enacted through the Military Industrial Complex.Vijay Mehta shows how attempts at peaceful national development, environmental sustainability and human rights are routinely blocked by Western powers. He locates the 2008 financial crisis in US attempts to block China's model of development. He shows how Europe and the US conspire with regional dictators to prevent countries from developing advanced industries, and how this system has fed terrorism. The Economics of Killing argues that a different world is possible, based on policies of disarmament, demilitarisation and sustainable development.

Nevena Nancheva A European Crisis. Perspectives on Refugees, Solidarity, and Europe.

This is a book about the crisis of the European integration project as seen from the vantage point of people's movements across and to the European continent. But why should the issue of refugees or of migration have anything to do with the dynamics of the integration or disintegration of the European Union? If anything, the existing global refugee protection regime was conceived in Europe at about the time when Europe began to integrate: It was seen as a moral imperative in the context of European solidarity and in the face of crisis. How did refugee protection become so controversial as to usher in a crisis of its own? Why do European governments and their peoples see refugees and migrants as the cause of a crisis in and of Europe? Solidarity, legitimacy, democracy, welfare, rights: How has refugee migration undermined European positions on all that has defined EU integration so far? This collection engages with these questions by focusing on the construction of the crisis narrative, offering an insight into distinctly European perspectives on and analyses of political responses to refugees, migration, and economic challenges. The aim of the volume is to provide an empirical and thematic context for understanding the link between refugee migration and the overpowering perception of Europe in crisis.

For this purpose, the research Question has been formulated as follows: How has a sense of European identity been affected by the European sovereign debt crisis? The notion of a European identity which lies at the heart of this study is everything but new to the policy makers in Brussels, to social theorists and to political scientists from around the globe. As elusive as the concept of a European identity might first appear, the sheer amount of academic publications, research projects, think tanks and media coverage that have contemplated the notion of European identity, indicate its fundamental importance to the future of the European project and its institutions. Given the fundamentally altered circumstances, which Europe has been facing since the onset of the European debt crisis in late 2009, it becomes necessary to reassess the contemporary state of an evolving sense of European identity. As large parts of the Academic community and various EU lead polls have suggested, the interplay between national and supra-national "imagined communities" and the E...

The authors of Violence and Crime in Latin America contend that perceptions and representations of violence and crime directly impact such behaviors, creating profound consequences for the political and social fabric of Latin American nations.Written by distinguished scholars of Latin American history, sociology, anthropology, and political science, the essays in this volume range from Mexico and Argentina to Colombia and Brazil in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, addressing such issues as extralegal violence in Mexico, the myth of indigenous criminality in Guatemala, and governments’ selective blindness to violent crime in Brazil and Jamaica. The authors in this collection examine not only the social construction and political visibility of violence and crime in Latin America, but the justifications for them as well. Violence and Crime in Latin America makes a substantive contribution to understanding a key problem facing Latin America today. This original, thought-provoking volume enhances our understanding of crime and violence throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Art and Violence in Early Renaissance Florence

This study is the first to examine the relationship between art and violence in 15th-century Florence, exposing the underbelly of a period more often celebrated for enlightened and progressive ideas. Renaissance Florentines were constantly subjected to the sight of violence, whether in carefully staged rituals of execution or images of the suffering inflicted on Christ. There was nothing new in this culture of pain, unlike the aesthetic of violence that developed towards the end of the 15th century. It emerged in the work of artists such as Piero di Cosimo, Bertoldo di Giovanni, Antonio del Pollaiuolo, and the young Michelangelo. Inspired by the art of antiquity, they painted, engraved, and sculpted images of deadly battles, ultimately normalizing representations of brutal violence. Drawing on work in social and literary history, as well as art history, Scott Nethersole sheds light on the relationship between these Renaissance images, violence, and ideas of artistic invention and authorship.
