The Democratic Developmental State. North-South Perspectives. The Democratic Developmental State. North-South Perspectives. Новинка

The Democratic Developmental State. North-South Perspectives.

The idea of a democratic developmental state forms part of the current development discourse advocated by international aid agencies, deliberated on by academics, and embraced by policy makers in many emerging economies in the global South. What is noticeable in this discourse is how little attention has been paid to a discussion of the essence of a democratic developmental state, and much of what passes for theory is little more than policy speak and political rhetoric. This volume fills a gap in the literature on the democratic developmental state. Analyzing the different approaches to the implementation of democratic developmental states in various countries in the South, it evaluates the extent to which these are merely replicating the central tenets of the East Asian model of the developmental state or if they are succeeding in their attempts to establish a new and more inclusive conceptualization of the state. In particular, the authors scrutinize to what degree the attempts to build a democratic developmental state may be distorted by the imperatives of neoliberalism. The volume broadens the understanding of the Nordic model of a democratic developmental state and shows how it represents an additional, and perhaps contending understanding of the developmental state derived from the East Asian experience.

First published in 1946, and now in its Seventh Edition, the Handbook has long been considered the definitive guide to the field of developmental science. Volume 1, Theory and Method, presents a rich mix of classic and contemporary theoretical perspectives, but the dominant views throughout are marked by an emphasis on the dynamic interplay of all facets of the developmental system across the life span, incorporating the range of biological, cognitive, emotional, social, cultural, and ecological levels of analysis. Examples of the theoretical approaches discussed in the volume include those pertinent to human evolution, self regulation, the development of dynamic skills, and positive youth development. The research, methodological, and applied implications of the theoretical models discussed in the volume are presented. Understand the contributions of biology, person, and context to development within the embodied ecological system Discover the relations among individual, the social world, culture, and history that constitute human development Examine the methods of dynamic, developmental research Learn person-oriented methodological approaches to assessing developmental change The scholarship within this volume and, as well, across the four volumes of this edition, illustrate that developmental science is in the midst of a very exciting period. There is a paradigm shift that involves increasingly greater understanding of how to describe, explain, and optimize the course of human life for diverse individuals living within diverse contexts. Developmental biology is at the core of biological science, integrating molecular biology, genetics and anatomy. The past 15 years has seen revolutionary advances not only in our understanding of the processes by which an egg develops into an adult, but also in the application of this knowledge to the areas of reproductive technology, drug development and organ replacement. Essential Developmental Biology is a concise and well-illustrated treatment of this subject for undergraduates. Assuming no prior knowledge of anatomy and only the basics of cell biology and genetics, the book starts off by introducing the principles and approaches of developmental biology. The second section covers the characteristic development of each of the principal model species used for research and the final chapters are devoted to organ development, predominantly in vertebrates. With an emphasis throughout on the evidence underpinning the main conclusions, this book is suitable as the key text for both introductory and more advanced courses in developmental biology. A new approach to a widely taught subject. Priced for student purchase at approximately half the price of the main competition. Over 200 illustrations, with artwork available free on the Web. Well-known author/media celebrity.

Ph.D. Mary Kay DeGenova Different Dreams. Reflections and Realities of Raising a Child With Developmental Disabilities

Mary Kay DeGenova was in a neurologist's waiting room when she saw a mother cradling a newborn in her arms. The mother was wiping away tears as she looked around at the other kids-some of whom were running around while others were in wheelchairs with feeding tubes. The look on the new mom's face brought back all the emotions DeGenova felt when she first began her own journey as a parent of a child with developmental disabilities. In this guide for new parents, DeGenova shares the challenges she's overcome and what other parents of a child with developmental disabilities can expect on their own respective journeys. She provides comfort to other parents with a child with developmental disabilities by letting them know they are not alone, as well as highlighting the overwhelming beauty and joy that is inevitable on this parenting path. More importantly, she shares useful advice and strategies to help new parents navigate the complicated world of raising a child with a developmental disability.
