The aim of this study was to define connections between heifer rearing intensity (average daily weight gain, age at first calving, body condition scores during the rearing phase) and production performance, fertility and longevity of dairy cows in the production period with regard to overall herd economics. A dairy herd is a complex system consisting of two interconnected parts - the milking herd and the replacement herd. Management decisions regarding replacement policy can have profound effects on the profitability of the farm as a whole. Although it is often pursued as a management target, low AFC does not always lead to the most profitable outcome in dairy herd management.

Livestock contribute to food, economy and sustainable agriculture. Livestock production systems differ widely in scale and intensity across the world and reflect differences in available resources (i.e. land, feed and water), socio-economics and tradition. We need to develop a good understanding of the differences among production systems if we are to be able to help poor livestock keepers take advantage of the rising demand for animal source foods, help livestock keepers adapt to a changing and more volatile climate; minimize the risk of disease emergence and spread, not only among livestock but also in people; and to help all livestock keepers mitigate greenhouse gas emissions via a wide range of options. Understanding how livestock fit into these systems, and how these systems may evolve in the future, is critical.

There continues to be strong interest within the food industry in developing new products which offer functional health benefits to the consumer. The premium prices that can be charged make these added-value products lucrative for manufacturers, and they are also commercially popular. Dairy foods are central to this sector: they are good delivery systems for functional foods (yoghurts, milk drinks, spreads) and are also rich in compounds which can be extracted and used as functional ingredients in other food types. Milk and Dairy Products as Functional Foods draws together a wealth of information regarding the functional health benefits of milk and dairy products. It examines the physiological role and the claimed health effects of dairy constituents such as proteins, bioactive peptides, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), omega 3 fatty acids vitamin D and calcium. These constituents have been shown to be, for example, anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, hypocholesterolemic, immune-modulating and antimicrobial. This book examines the evidence for these claims, and investigates practical approaches for utilising these attributes. The book is aimed at dairy scientists and technologists in industry and academia, general food scientists and technologists, microbiologists and nutritionists together with all those involved in the formulation and production of functional food products.

Food insecurity is one of the major problems that the rural populations of Ethiopia are facing. Recurrent drought, natural resource degradation and population pressure are among the major causes of poor agricultural production, food insecurity and malnutrition. Integration gap in livestock-crop interactions, recognized as some of the problems facing forage development in Ethiopia acting bottleneck to livestock productivity. The main source of livestock feed in Ethiopia comes from natural pasture which are low in quality and quantity. Moreover, these areas are also diminishing in size due to conversion into farm land because of high human population growth. Rugged topography and high population pressure are causes of farm-land shortage. Due to this critical problem, growing forage crops as sole crop for animal feed is difficult. The only possibility is the use of land for food and forage production. Growing of forage legumes through intercropping is one way of introducing forage crops so as to use the small farm land for both crop and feed production. The system offers a potential for increasing fodder without appreciable reduction of grain production to satisfy livestock revolution

Milk is nature’s most complete food, and dairy products are considered to be the most nutritious foods of all. The traditional view of the role of milk has been greatly expanded in recent years beyond the horizon of nutritional subsistence of infants: it is now recognized to be more than a source of nutrients for the healthy growth of children and nourishment of adult humans. The conception of secularism has been fragile and flexible; it varies from country to country. Its scope and implication is too difficult to define in most legal systems including Ethiopia. This author, thus, tries to acquaint readers with the basic concept of separation of state and religion. He also tries to demarcate the line between state and religious matters. This book is useful for researchers, lawyers and academicians interested in the issues of secularism in general and particularly in Ethiopia.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,7, University of Groningen (Economics and Business), language: English, abstract: Pull systems can be simple but effective production control systems. However, most pull systems do not perform well with random processing times and have a limited applicability for the MTO sector. The systems do not achieve a decent reduction of total throughput times (TTT) or only under special conditions. The unsolved problem is how to design a load-based system that is able to perform well with random processing times. To overcome this problem a load-based pull system with an adapted release mechanism is proposed. Pull systems need to balance the workload effectively over the different routes and stations in order to reduce TTT. By prioritizing orders regarding their size, the adapted release mechanism balances the workload within the routes and between the different routes. A discrete event simulation with several sets of experiments was conducted to test this release mechanism in a load-based system and compare it to various other pull systems. The results show an improved performance of the proposed system compared to the other systems. The magnitude of this performance improvement strongly depends on the used ratio of large to small orders.

The small structured farms that dominate the organic production in these regions are often excluded from the organic market, because of e.g. the high costs of the normally used third party certification. To improve their organic market access Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) were developed in Brazil. Thus Brazil became a pioneering country in terms of equal recognition of these two certification systems. However certification and social learning in a network has a great potential for the improvement of the principle of fairness in organic Agriculture.

Modelling of river systems at watershed scale is becoming important both for the current needs of basin management and for predicting the long-term evolution of the river itself. Long-term predictions are becoming necessary to prevent serious mistakes made by the present interventions that may possible result in irreverisble damages in the future. Long-term numerical simulations inevitably require to extend the analysis to larger and larger portion of the watershed since morphological perturbations tend to propagate from their origin over the hydrographic network. Indeed, the propagation celerity of the perturbation, combined with the damping length of the perturbation itself, may be used to evaluate the response time of the river system. Morphological long-term models at watershed scale require out of necessity a number of simplifications for the following two reasons: - reasonable computational effort; - application to river systems that are totally or partially unsurveyed. Such a type of simple models, therefore, can only be 1-D models. These may possibly be applied to create boundary conditions for more detailed 2-D models devoted to local and instantaneous investigations.

With no exceptions, all federations exercise intergovernmental relations. It is an inherited and inevitable part of a federal system. We are living in the world where 40 percent of states are under federal systems. Some Federations develop intergovernmental relations by the constitution that establishes federal system. Some expand it through legislation. Other establish and rely on independent institutions that manage different orders of government relations. Ethiopia, a multi-ethnic and multilingual state is a federal state structure since 1995 in order to accommodate diversity which is the manifestation not only of Ethiopia but also eastern parts of Africa. Self-rule and shared rule as one principle of a federal system became the only option to protect Ethiopia from disintegration and never ending war. It transformed Ethiopia from dead end to a new beginning. However,as far as the issue of intergovernmental relations is concerned neither the constitution nor the institutions that exist deal with how should the relationship look like. This leads the federal government and its institution to dominate state government and institution that brings centralized federalism in Ethiopia.

In The First American Frontier, Wilma Dunaway challenges many assumptions about the development of preindustrial Southern Appalachia's society and economy. Drawing on data from 215 counties in nine states from 1700 to 1860, she argues that capitalist exchange and production came to the region much earlier than has been previously thought. Her innovative book is the first regional history of antebellum Southern Appalachia and the first study to apply world-systems theory to the development of the American frontier. Dunaway demonstrates that Europeans established significant trade relations with Native Americans in the southern mountains and thereby incorporated the region into the world economy as early as the seventeenth century. In addition to the much-studied fur trade, she explores various other forces of change, including government policy, absentee speculation in the region's natural resources, the emergence of towns, and the influence of local elites. Contrary to the myth of a homogeneous society composed mainly of subsistence homesteaders, Dunaway finds that many Appalachian landowners generated market surpluses by exploiting a large landless labor force, including slaves. In delineating these complexities of economy and labor in the region, Dunaway provides a perceptive critique of Appalachian exceptionalism and development.

Although goat production occurs throughout the country, goat milk production is limited and is only undertaken in the semi-arid regions in the south western parts of the country. Dairy goat production has been gaining popularity in many countries around the world in the recent years among the small scale farmers. There, however, has not been much attention given to goat milk production in the smallholder areas despite its nutritional, health, and potential for niche export markets. This book therefore ascertains the primary reasons for keeping goats in smallholder areas where goats are milked, determines and analyzes the socio-economic factors influencing goat milk production. The book shows the potential that exist to stimulate goat milk production in the smallholder areas targeting improved disease control through accessibility of veterinary medicines and vaccines.Government and research organizations can deliberately formulate strategies to introduce improved goat milk breeds and promote the development of para-veterinary programs as a way of diversifying income sources and promoting the development and eventual commercialization of goat milk production in Zimbabwe.
