This book is concerned with food production and security in Sub Saharan Africa. It seeks to highlight the importance of urban food systems, women and micro-livestock farming, and how these can be instrumental in ensuring food security. There is an attempt to suggest that understanding of climate change variables and their impacts on agricultural production is a prerequisite for defining appropriate agricultural adaptive responses to increase food production. The book acknowledges that meeting food demand due to increasing human population in Sub Saharan Africa has been a challenge. Suggest improved productive resources supply side will translate into adequate food production. If food production is improved Sub Saharan Africa will not continue to worry that human population growth will out pace the ability to meet the predicted food demand.

It also considers the question of sui generis protection from the perspective of food security. It examines the extent to which existing IPRs can fulfill the twin goal of promoting technological development and food security. It also examines further options that are open to Sub-Saharan Africa countries under the TRIPS Agreement and beyond the TRIPS Agreement, taking into account other treaties such as the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (International Treaty on PGRFA).

Seventy percent of the global burden of mental disorders is located in low and middle income countries (LMIC),including sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, in Africa, only 0.62% of the national health budget is allocated to mental health compared to a global median of 2.8% and 5% in Europe. The government is the source of funding in 62%of patients with severe mental disorder in the World Health Organisation (WHO), Africa Region, the lowest of all the WHO regions, and lower compared to a global median of 79%. This is compounded by poor resources, with mental health outpatient facilities in WHO Africa Region being less that 10% of the global median. To address these problems, the WHO launched its Mental Health Action Gap Programme (mhGAP) in 2008, to scale-up mental health services in low and middle income countries (LMIC). The book is directed to all policy makers in sub-Saharan Africa to aid decision making about the urgent need for sustainable and relevant mental health care strategies, and the important areas that need priority. The book should be helpful to local and international researchers in formulating research questions relevant to the African continent and it will be of interest to medical practitioners and students in the region as adjunct to standard text books.

Civil conflicts in Africa range from few interstate wars to several intrastate conflicts characterized by secessionist movements, irredentism, coups and counter coups, genocide, wars of liberation to resource-based wars. The varied causes of conflicts in the continent's diverse and complex social formations are seen in ethnic terms and include struggles for economic/environmental resources, poor institutions of governance and issues of identity such as religion, language and racial differences. The core issue addressed in this volume is how to understand and explain the structural and analytical reasons for persistent civil conflicts in Africa. The core assumption is that most civil conflicts in Africa erupt largely because of the nature of state formation in the continent. Other significant variables that are explored as explanations for the persistent instances of civil conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa and the slow efforts at nation-building across the continent include issues of territoriality, climate change, ethnicity, ideological incongruities, institutional problems, the nature of postcolonial state, unreformed governance and economic structures, and corruption. This book also examines some sources of unresolved issues of territoriality and explains their connections to political violence and socio-political and cultural tensions across sub-Saharan Africa. It offers suggestions on how scholarly research and policies could help mediate if not mitigate future territor...

HIV/AIDS has been named the Sub Saharan disease. In countries that have achieved significant declines in HIV prevalence, young people have registered the biggest behavioural changes. It means they hold the keys not only to our understanding of the epidemic, but more importantly, to the efforts required to stem the tide of infections. However, the majority of young people are ignorant of how to prevent transmission, have low compliance to condom use, which is in some cases accentuated by misconceptions about HIV/AIDS transmission and have insufficient knowledge regarding transmission and avoidance behaviours. As such, consensus on feasible preventive interventions target young people, particularly those in schools. It is on this premise that the book unlocks the key pillars in effective HIV/AIDS education policies and practices. The study has drawn upon the experiences of selected Urban Schools in Malawi to explore the needs of young people in classroom, the extent to which the classroom practices respond to the needs, and the factors influencing these using questionnaires, interviews, lesson observations, and document analysis. Malawi typically represents most Sub Saharan African countries in terms of challenges faced by education systems. Given the similar cultural settings of the people of Sub Saharan Africa, the findings and recommendations of the study generalises to the education systems of Sub Saharan Africa to a greater extent. The book shows the need for open discussio...

By the late 1980s, dictatorship had triumphed over democracy in Sub-Saharan (SS) Africa, thereby bringing to a halt the democratization process that had been introduced by the colonial powers before independence in the mid 20th century. As a consequence, it triggered a chain of widespread street protests, violence and strikes, led by the civil society.Coupled with a devastating economic crisis, it drew the attention of several external bodies who began a series of activities to normalize the societies. But their actions sparked up a conspiracy theory from African scholars, politicians and media, accusing the mostly Western-based actors of double standards and neo-colonialism in Africa. This theory therefore put to question an important issue; whether the activities have been meant for the promotion of democracy or for some other purposes. So in this 89 page book, the author, after identifying these actors, and critically probing into their policies, came up with some very interesting revelations about the motives behind it all. Its a must-read book especially for students and lovers of democracy and rights activists.

In Sub-Saharan Africa decades of development and malaria control have not significantly eliminated the risk of malaria infections. In 2010, 91% of the 655000 malaria deaths occurred in Sub-Saharan Africa. Why has malaria become such a difficult disease to control despite the fact that it is largely preventable and treatable, and the knowledge to do this exists? Development and Malaria Prevention in Rural Ghana provides a critical exploration of the factors that explain why increased policy attention and resource mobilization to malaria control in Sub-Saharan Africa have not led to malaria eradication or drastic reduction in malaria morbidity and mortality. Based on empirical research in Ghana, the book brings into conversation debates from development studies and public health and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of current policy responses to malaria especially in rural Ghana. The book is intended for senior undergraduate students, graduate students, and teachers interested in issues of development and health in Africa. The book will also be a valuable resource for policy makers and development and healthcare practitioners concerned with the fight against malaria.

Animal trypanosomiasis presents a serious veterinary problem in most parts of the developing world, nowhere more so than in sub-Saharan Africa where it is arguably the most important animal disease. While many other animal diseases of major economic importance have been successfully controlled during this century, trypanosomiasis continues to present a major constraint to animal production in sub-Saharan Africa. In livestock, the disease is manifested by loss of body condition, anaemia, pyrexia and death if not treated. Despite availability and use of tsetse and trypanosomiasis control technologies at the Kenyan coast effective control of the disease has been elusive. Cross sectional and longitudinal studies were conducted to assessing the the epidemiology and impact of drug resistance in the control of trypanosomiasis in cattle under different production systems

Many economists have argued that prolonged fiscal expansions contribute to current account imbalances. The purpose of this work is to explore this phenomenon in the case of Sub-Saharan Africa countries during the period 1980 to 2007. In the framework of panel cointegration test, panel VAR Granger Causality analysis and a reduced-form consumption function, this work tries to evaluate the validity of the conventional (Keynesian) view and the Ricardian Equivalence Hypothesis (the link between the twin deficits) in two groups of Sub-Saharan Africa countries: Oil importing and Oil exporting economies. The findings of this work would help policy makers and planners in managing deficits based on the direction of causation. It also triggers interested researchers in the area to inquire further about the issue.

Sub-Saharan Africa has enjoyed a high rate of growth in the last couple of years, thanks to increasing prices of raw materials. Revenue in the form of royalties from the extractive sector, as well as profits from companies in which governments hold interest, have been invested in projects aiming to improve people's quality of life on a scale never before seen in the region's post-colonial history. An expanding middle class has attracted interest from companies in consumer goods and services industries. More and more countries seem to be 'open for business', seeking to attract investment and increase exports, rather than just receive development aid. Still, challenges to doing business in Sub-Saharan Africa remain, and they are amongst the greatest in the world. This work analyzes such challenges, considering they are all stemming from the way countries are governed. Two major factors are treated: the quality of business regulation and political stability. The work also intends to show some of the differences that exist between countries in the region, being useful both for academics and business professionals looking to enter new markets.

Ambassador (Dr.) Robin Renee Sanders’ new book on The Rise of Africa’s Small & Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) is an insightful examination of the dramatic shift in the development paradigm for Sub Saharan Africa — driven in large part by the imaginative, innovative, and insta-impact leadership of the region’s small businesses or SMEs. “SMEs have helped drive economic development, growth and aided in increasing the size of the Continent’s middle class,” Sanders says. With the Introduction to the book by renown civil rights leader Ambassador Andrew Young, and the Foreword by Sub Saharan Africa’s leading businessman, Mr. Aliko Dangote, Sanders’ book credits the determination of Africa SMEs and entrepreneurs (which includes African nationals, immigrants and African Americans) for stepping into the void left by 40-years of post-independence development approaches that had little impact on reducing overall poverty and creating jobs in the region. “Africa’s dynamic entrepreneurial spirit of Generation-Xers and Millennials’ are and have formed SMEs and social enterprises that today are responsible for conceiving and inventing many of the new apps, and answers to address the region’s age-old poverty issues,” Sanders emphasizes. “Africa SMEs are not only a key driver for jobs, but serve as an additional catalyst to grow the middle class.” Sanders argues that it was the Rise of the Africa SME – converging with technology and its mobility – that has changed, over the last decade, the ...

In Narrative Paths: African Travel in Modern Fiction and Nonfiction, Kai Mikkonen argues that early twentieth-century European travel writing, journal keeping, and fiction converged and mutually influenced each other in ways that inform current debates about the fiction-nonfiction distinction. Turning to narratives set in sub-Saharan Africa, Mikkonen identifies five main dimensions of interplay between fiction and nonfiction: the experiential frame of the journey, the redefinition of the language and objective of description, the shared cultural givens and colonial notions concerning sub-Saharan Africa, the theme of narrativisation, and the issue of virtual genres. Narrative Paths reveals the important role that travel played as a frame in these modernist fictions as well as the crucial ways that nonfiction travel narratives appropriated fictional strategies. Narrative Paths contributes to debates in narratology and rhetorical narrative theory about the fiction-nonfiction distinction. With chapters on a wide range of modernist authors-from Pierre Loti, André Gide, Michel Leiris, and Georges Simenon to Blaise Cendrars, Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Joseph Conrad, Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh, and Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen)-Mikkonen's study also contributes to postcolonial approaches to these authors, examining issues of representation, narrative voice, and authority in narratives about colonial Africa.

The African continent is on the rise. Africa is set for a radical Demographic shift. By the year 2050, more than half the projected 2.2 billion rise in world population is expected to take place in Africa. Within the next 35 years, 1 in every 4 people will be African, this number rising to 4 in 10 people by the end of the century making the future of humanity increasingly African. Africa today is a magnet and a hive of activity for billions of dollars in foreign direct investments meant for the extraction of the vast wealth of raw materials that sustain the growth and viability of the global economy. In the past ten years, Africa has experienced a sharp rise in economic growth with a potential domestic market in excess of 900 million people. Seven out of the top ten fastest growing economies in the world are African countries. Many foreign investors have been forced to turn away from their traditional investments in developed markets and are now looking closely towards emerging pportunities on the African continent. “THE AFRICANS”, asks the hard questions about what is in it for the more than one billion Africans on the continent and demonstrates that Africa’s present condition is intimately connected with her past. Since the 1990s, sub-Saharan Africa has experienced unprecedented attempts at reforming teacher and student classroom practices, with a learner-centred pedagogy regarded as an effective antidote to the prevalence of teacher-centred didactic classroom practices. Attempts at reform have been going on all over the continent. In fact, learner-centred pedagogy has been described as one of the most pervasive educational ideas in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere. Research has revealed that the major attempts have largely failed mainly because teachers have not been able to adopt instructional innovations to technical problems. This failure is also related to lack of resources, and poor teacher training programmes which lead to poor teacher quality, among others. This book attempts to explain why pedagogical change has not occurred in spite of the much energy and resources that have been committed to such reforms. The book also takes us inside what the author calls 'the socio-cultural world of African classrooms' to help us understand the reasons teachers dominate classroom life and rely disproportionately on didactic methods of teaching. Its conceptual analyses capture the best of both the sociology and the anthropology of education in contexts of poverty, as well as the politics of education. The book concludes that a socio-cultural approach should be the basis for developing culturally responsive indigenous pedagogies, though these may or may not turn out to be ...

Over the past four decades, policy makers and stakeholders have struggled with the challenge of promoting industrial development in low and middle-income economies in general, and in sub-Saharan African (SSA) in particular. With the rise of the Asian Drivers (China and India) and their increase in demand for raw materials to fuel growth, the turn of the millennium saw a commodity price super-cycle emerge, benefiting a number of resource rich countries in SSA. Faced with the specter of the Resource Curse, this book examines an industrial pathway where countries can "Make the Most of Commodities." Bringing together ground-breaking research in the commodity sectors, this book uses case-studies to explore conduits for industrial development, focusing on backward and forward linkages, with policy advice for both governments and corporate sectors.

Master's Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: Merit, University of Kent, 55 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The persistent low state of development in sub-Saharan Africa has become a global challenge. Academics and think-tanks continue to search for solutions to Africa's longstanding problems. Studies have proven that the entire region is essentially confronted with a crisis of social structures and government and the fragmentation of authority is the hallmark of this crisis (Van Hoyweghen & Smis, 2002:575). Over twenty-four million people are infected with AIDS/HIV, growth of per capita income is low and civil wars have killed millions in Rwanda, Burundi, Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo. African governments owe billions of dollars in debt (Polanyi, 2003:563). This irreversible trend brought the good governance discourse in development cooperation between the donors and African counterparts. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the concept of good governance is being implemented in Africa. For clarity purposes, the work is limited to the analysis of the efforts being made by the European Union (EU) and the World Bank in assisting African countries to implement good governance. This choice is based on the fact that the EU and World Bank are the main multilateral aid donors and development partners of the region. It argues that good governance en...

The social and religious phenomenon popularly known as the “prosperity gospel” should not be considered merely as a practical issue that needs addressed in churches, but also a matter that requires academic investigation and engagement. Dr Habarurema applies biblical scholarship, historical enquiry and contemporaneous analysis to generosity and financial reward in 2 Corinthians 8–9 and to the prosperity gospel movement.Focusing on the concepts of divine charis and autarkeia, this study provides insight into the apostle Paul’s exhortations to care for the poor and vulnerable in society as a manifestation by the church, of God’s compassion and grace. This book provides detailed exegesis of the chapters in question, an overview of Pentecostalism within Protestant and Roman Catholic churches in sub-Saharan Africa, comparison of the themes with their treatment by theologians throughout the history of the church and investigation of the prosperity gospel movement. The author concludes with a series of hermeneutical and theological recommendations to promote a reading which is faithful to Paul’s thoughts in 2 Corinthians 8–9, fully integrated in his overall theology, and remains open to insights provided by Pentecostal hermeneutics.

Questions surrounding democracy, governance, and development especially in view of Africa have provoked acrimonious debates in the past few years. It remains a perennial question why some decades after political independence in Africa the continent continues experiencing bad governance, lagging behind socio-economically, and its democracy questionable. We admit that a plethora of theories and reasons, including iniquitous and maledictious ones, have been conjured in an attempt to explain and answer the questions on why Africa seems to be lagging behind other continents in issues pertaining to good governance, democracy and socio-economic development. Yet, none of the theories and reasons proffered so far seems to have provided enduring solutions to Africa's diverse complex problems and predicaments. The concept of sustainability holds that the social, economic, and environmental factors within human communities must be viewed interactively and systematically. Sustainable development cannot be understood apart from a community, its ethos, and ways of life. Although broadly conceived, the pursuit of sustainable development is a local practice because every community has different needs and quality of life concerns. Within this framework, contributors representing the disciplines of anthropology, sociology, geography, economics, law, public policy, architecture, and urban studies explore sustainability in communities in the Pacific, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, and North America.

As Sub-Saharan Africa continues to claim the lion's share of the world's HIV burden, it is crucial to shed some light on the types of sexual behaviors and the underlying factors influencing these behaviors in relation to HIV/AIDS in this particular part of the world. Even though the relationship between sexual behaviors and HIV/AIDS has garnered a lot of attention and many researches have been conducted in the area, comprehensive knowledge is still inadequate in Sub-Saharan countries partially explaining the staggering incidence rate despite enormous investment focused on prevention. Given the paramount economic and social impact of HIV in Africa as a result of its drastic effect on the young and productive part of the society, studies specifically targeting this age group can unravel a wealth of information essential for intervention. This book closely examines perception of risk of HIV/AIDS and intention to adopt preventive behaviors among students in Dire Dawa University in Ethiopia.

Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich VWL - Internationale Wirtschaftsbeziehungen, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: On the basis of this prediction this paper will assess whether the United Nations´ development agenda - the Millennium Development Goals - could provide a pathway in achieving this keen target and herald an era of bold ambition to solve one of the world´s most urging problems. The MDGs comprise eight global objectives, one of them "The eradication of worldwide poverty", which is being measured by a set of economic indicators in order to derive respective strategies for halving destitution between 1990 and 2015. In the course of this work the success and shortfall of the implemented strategies will be analyzed for Sub - Saharan Africa, the region where the greatest share of the world´s poor reside. Furthermore, the chances and deficits that global development agenda such as the MDGs exhibit will be taken into deeper consideration highlighting the needs of the development assistance of the years to come. Ultimately, the future efforts of international institutions, governments and nongovernmental organizations with reference to poverty alleviation will be outlined and evaluated as far as Mr. Kim´s statement of ending poverty within a generation can be realized.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa has been addressed and perceived predominantly through the broad perspectives of social and economic theories as well as public health and development discourses. This volume however, focuses on the micro-politics of illness, treatment and death in order to offer innovative insights into the complex processes that shape individual and community responses to AIDS. The contributions describe the dilemmas that families, communities and health professionals face and shed new light on the transformation of social and moral orders in African societies, which have been increasingly marginalised in the context of global modernity.

Across Africa, funerals and events remembering the dead have become larger and even more numerous over the years. Whereas in the West death is normally a private and family affair, in Africa funerals are often the central life cycle event, unparalleled in cost and importance, for which families harness vast amounts of resources to host lavish events for multitudes of people with ramifications well beyond the event. Though officials may try to regulate them, the popularity of these events often makes such efforts fruitless, and the elites themselves spend tremendously on funerals. This volume brings together scholars who have conducted research on funerary events across sub-Saharan Africa. The contributions offer an in-depth understanding of the broad changes and underlying causes in African societies over the years, such as changes in religious beliefs, social structure, urbanization, and technological changes and health.Michael Jindra is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and a visiting research scholar in the Center for the Study of Religion and Society at the University of Notre Dame. Malaria and Poverty in Africa

Malaria is a serious health and economic problem in Africa, afflicting more than half of the continent's population. Although HICV/AIDS, TB and nutritional deficiencies pose major development problems on the continent, the challenges presented by malaria are of a different kind, because the disease is widespread, persistent and grossly underestimated by the general population. The importance of malaria, along with HIV/AIDS and other diseases in the development agenda, is now recognised in Goal 6 of the Millennium Goals. This book provides the evidence required to design and implement malaria control strategies in Africa. The chapters analyse the nexus between poverty and malaria with a focus on policies that can be implemented at various levels of society to fight the disease. Malaria and Poverty in Africa is the outcome of a research sponsored by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). Augustin Kwasi Fosu is the Director, Economic Division of the United Nations Commision for Africa, Addis Ababa, and former Director of Research at the AERC, Nairobi. Germano Mwabu is Professor of Economics at the University of Nairobi. He was co-director of the AERC project on Poverty Income Distribution and Labour Markets in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The competitive nature of the examinations locked out many candidates from pursuing University education. The emergence of Private Universities has provided a reprieve. Students who qualify but fail to get admission into Public Universities join Private Universities. The book explores expansion of Private Universities and its implication on Student characteristics, access factors, quality and completion rate. Using Kenya as a case, the study established that the minimum entry qualifications of students admitted was a C+ in secondary examinations and more females (58.23%) than males (41.77%) were enrolled. Majority (67.82%) of them were not married and most Students (52.47%) were below 24 years of age. Most students were enrolled in the faculties of education, business and computing science which accounted for over 70% of total enrollment. Factors that influenced access were: Newspaper advertisements, reasonable cost of the programs and strict graduation schedules. However, private universities should improve on provision of facilities and infrastructure.

“Lost in Democracy” is an exposé on Africa’s difficulty with democracy. It examines the indigenous systems of government that existed in different parts of the continent prior to the arrival of explorers and colonial adventurers in the continent as well as the introduction of the western sociopolitical systems. It compares African leadership with leaderships in other parts of the world with similar colonial experiences and identifies the problems posed by global powers protecting strategic interests in Africa. It also identifies the strength and weaknesses of democracy in the continent against the backdrop of all such difficulties as well as the up and down sides of the primordial African indigenous systems. It concludes with suggestions of possible alternatives to the current unworkable systems.

This is both an analytical and a constructive work that seeks to propose a theological framework for development in Africa with a specific focus on Tanzania. Most of past educational materials in this field concerned themselves with the term “development.” This study endeavored to analyze the deficiency of this term and thus introduced couple qualifying terms namely, “Sustainability” and “Transformation.” These terms, above all, present a crosscutting perspective in dealing with human condition facing the sub-Saharan Africa but without necessarily universalizing them. The quest for an African theology of sustainable development in Tanzania derives its legitimacy from historical phenomenon that has denied local knowledge utilization in bringing solution to the problems facing people. The church in Tanzania which, provides a larger percentage of social services to the population, relies on theologies and methodologies that have little input from Tanzanians themselves.

This book covers potential impact of biofuels in Sub-Saharan Africa, specifically Malawi. The production and processing of biofuels in Malawi has potential environmental and socio-economic benefits and risks. This must be strategically assessed to ensure sustainability and reduction or elimination of impacts on its natural resources. There is no framework in terms of policies, legislations and institutions to roll out sustainable biofuel sub-sector in terms of regulations, standards, certification, incentives and public-private partnerships. Biofuels is assumed to be tackled under other sectoral policies such as energy, agriculture, water and trade but these policies are either blind or mention biofuels under renewable energy with no specific plan for the biofuel sub-sector. Thus need to integrate biofuel sub-sector in the economy of Malawi to actualise its sustainability. The book is suitable for researchers, policy makers, academicians and students interested in biomass related renewable energy and their impact on natural resource base.

Each year at least 3.3 million babies are stillborn, more than 4 million die within 28 days of birth, and a further 6.6 million young children die before their fifth birthday. The highest PMR are reported from sub - Saharan Africa (about 80 per 1000 births ), followed by Asia and Latin America (UNICEF 2008). In sub - Saharan Africa alone 1.2 million babies die in the first month of life and another million babies are stillborn each year. In Western Europe, neonatal and infant mortality has declined during the last 30 years to 4-6 per 1000 births . In many agricultural areas of Africa, soil acidity is among constraints of agricultural activities. Lime plays a great role in agriculture, it is considered as important in correcting acidic soils for improved crop yields. In addition, to achieve sustainability of agricultural activities, lime is considered as the pillar for constantly production of food crops. Limestone deposits are scattered in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa and are well suited for agricultural purposes. In order to value local lime deposit, it is important to analyze and contrast their effects on soil properties and yield of crops. Therefore, this book reviewed and analyzed soil acidification, quality and effects of different limes available in Rwanda with main focus on lime effects on soil properties and yield of Irish potato (Solanum tuberosum.L).

At the end of 2010, an estimated 34 million people were living with HIV worldwide, Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most heavily affected by HIV, bout 68% of all people living with HIV resided in it. Simple robust approaches are needed to monitor the prevalence and incidence of HIV in Africa. The collection of dried blood spots (DBS) on filter paper provides a powerful approach for the development of large-scale, population-based screening programs. DBS methods are particularly valuable in developing countries and isolated rural regions where resources are limited. Large numbers of field specimens can be economically collected and shipped to centralized reference laboratories for molecular and (or) serological analysis.

The subject of food security or insecurity is a complex development issue in most third world countries. In a given locality, the pervasiveness of food insecurity could be a measure of local level of governance, natural disaster, conflict, war, power imbalance, highly skewed economic distribution among citizens, lack of and competition for natural resources, over population and/or other factors.Currently, over 800 million people or 13 per cent of the world’s population are chronically undernourished in a world that can produce sufficient food for everyone and day in and day out, they wake up hungry and go to bed hungry. In Sub-Saharan Africa only,it is projected that by 2020, the number of food-insecure people will exceed 500 million, out of a total population of roughly 1 billion. Within this sub-continent,the Horn of Africa is one of the most volatile regions which might mainly be triggered by food insecurity. The driving forces of food insecurity in this area are not easy to analyse and at times could be enigmatic.Using the case of Djibouti & Somalia, this book explicates how a number of factors are involving in bringing down a country to a state of unparalleled food insecurity & termoil.

African Friends and Money Matters grew out of frustrations that Westerners experience when they travel and work in Africa. Africans have just as many frustrations relating to Westerners in their midst. Each manages money, time, and relationships in very different ways, often creating friction and misunderstanding. This book deals with everyday life in Africa, showing the underlying logic of African economic systems and behavior. Two new chapters in this second edition emphasize personal relationships, making the book even more relevant to the thoughtful reader. Maranz introduces these principles, as well as the very different goals of African and Western economic systems, plus ninety specific observations of money-related African behaviors. Personal anecdotes bring this book to life. The result is that the reader can make sense of customs that at first seem incomprehensible. This popular book has captured the interest of Westerners living in or visiting Sub-Saharan Africa: business, diplomatic, and NGO personnel; religious workers, journalists, and tourists. The readership includes professors and students of African Studies. African readers will also be interested for what it reveals about Western culture and ways Westerners often react to Africa. David E. Maranz (Ph.D., International Development) has worked with SIL International in several African countries since 1975 in community development, administration, and anthropology consulting.
