Livestock contribute to food, economy and sustainable agriculture. Livestock production systems differ widely in scale and intensity across the world and reflect differences in available resources (i.e. land, feed and water), socio-economics and tradition. We need to develop a good understanding of the differences among production systems if we are to be able to help poor livestock keepers take advantage of the rising demand for animal source foods, help livestock keepers adapt to a changing and more volatile climate; minimize the risk of disease emergence and spread, not only among livestock but also in people; and to help all livestock keepers mitigate greenhouse gas emissions via a wide range of options. Understanding how livestock fit into these systems, and how these systems may evolve in the future, is critical.

The exploitation of traditional crops, which often are grown with low inputs, and are largely adapted to the climatic conditions of the developing countries, would be a step towards better resource utilization. Available literature from research on sweet potato focused more on tuber yields with little or no attention paid to foliage yield and quality. Unfortunately, Information about feeding value, extent and evolution of feeding practices of vine as a feed source is not much known due to lack of knowledge about the crop, and its use for animal feed. Furthermore, information on supplementation of livestock diets with sweet potato vines in Ethiopia is not sufficient. Therefore, the current study was designed to evaluate the effect of substituting sweet potato vines with concentrate mix at increasing levels on feed intake, growth performance and carcass traits of Sidama goats.

Livestock rearing is one of the most important economic activities in the rural areas of India which provides supplementary income to most of the families dependent on agriculture. Apart from providing subsidiary income to the families, rearing of livestock such as cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, poultry etc. is a source of readily available high quality animal protein to the farmer's family. Livestock farms in rural and periurban farming systems vary widely in size and other characteristics like economic performance, type of herd maintained, feeding systems followed etc. This variation possess problem to identify target group based on which research and extension activities could be carried out. The need to identify the patterns in livestock farming thus is essential to understand the differences and target the research and extension activities in a more meaningful way. Many variables influence the patterns of livestock farming. Identifying the most important or crucial variables to structure the livestock farming in a homogeneous way is thus imperative. This study gives an account of the livestock production systems followed by rural and periurban farmers in South Gujarat, India

The study on the impact of HIV/AIDS on the livestock-producing communities of Uganda was carried out in Kashumba and Moyo sub counties. There was no clear data that supported the impact of HIV/AIDS on livestock producing communities on labour, decision-making, grazing and watering time and factors that aggravated its effects. Data were collected using semi-structured questionnaire, focus group discussion, observation guides and review of secondary data. The study showed that there was reduction in the availability of labour for grazing and watering livestock in both Moyo and Kashumba; There was shift in decision-making and implementation from ailing household heads to selected household members. There was significant negative changes in livestock grazing and sale of livestock products in households affected by HIV/AIDS compared to those non affected. Furthermore, there was reduction in grazing and watering time for livestock activities. It was observed that daily animal source foods reduced in the affected households. The study recommended that HIV/AIDS mitigation measures be intergrated in the livestock sector plans that will create HIV/AIDS competent communities in Uganda.

The smallest of gaps between buildings is utilized, perimeter block develop - ments are completed, courtyards filled in, houses height - ened and smaller structures replaced with larger ones. This process of densification preserves existing and natu - rally developed quarters and infrastructure, while protect - ing against urban sprawl and the development of soulless quarters full of new builds. In some cases, a self-contained element that clearly sets itself apart from the existing built environment is most suitable; in others, the best solution is the re-interpretation and development of the existing context. Maize is one of the most important cereal crops in the World's agricultural economy both as food for humans and feed for animals and poultry. Maize is known as "Queen of Cereals" due to its higher yield potential compared to other cereals. In India it is the third most important food crop after rice and wheat. The demand for maize is increasing day by day in India, owing to the increased demand for poultry and cattle feed and for the same reason it is also emerging as an important cereal crop in India. In crop plants, the physiological basis of dry matter production is dependent on the source-sink concept, where the source is the potential capacity for photosynthesis and the sink is the potential capacity to utilize the photosynthetic products. Hence, for improving attainable crop yields the knowledge of yield forming physiological processes such as source-sink relationships is required. Many studies have been conducted on source-sink relationship in different crops including maize to understand this phenomenon towards maneuvering such crops. Since, maize being the sink limiting crop, it is important to study the source-sink relationship to improve the sink capacity and maize yield

India is especially suitable for agricultural products, its vast plains containing alluvial soil with rich natural contents. The major economy of India is based on agricultural products. The green revolution in India brought high hopes for Indian farmers. Several new scientific information helped crop production to grow by leaps and bounds: the more researches, the more intricacies. Further knowledge of pests makes scientists consider several new solutions. The use of chemicals was immediately adopted to decimate the population of pests and, at first, good results were obtained. But later on, harmful effects of the pesticides became known. It was realized later on that the regular use of chemicals in pesticides is extremely dangerous for human health.Generally, chemical pesticides are used to curb the harmful effects of insects and pests. But the immediate gain of this process has an adverse effect on the environment in the long run. Regular use of chemicals leads to insecticide resistance. Then, biodiversity is distributed by pest resurgence and pesticide residues. So, the immediate gain of one generation creates serious problems for the next generation. To sustain agriculture towards its natural mode some new solutions are to be traced. The solution to reduce pesticides is present in the preference for biological management. Predators and parasitoids may be used as natural enemies. In order to gain control over the thrips pests by less harmful means for the agricultural crop...

Despite this fact, it has largely been ignored in water management for food security. Livestock production interacts with the water resources directly or indirectly and the interaction can be positive or negative depending on the type of production. Evidences suggest that there is a huge knowledge gap and much misinformation about livestock's use of and impact on water resources. This book tries to answer the questions that what type of interaction exists in the Nile River Basin and how much is the productivity of the water for livestock production. This book should be useful for any level researchers and professionals in environment, livestock, agriculture and similar fields.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 7.31, Junagadh Agricultural University (College of Agriculture), course: Farm Power and Machinery, language: English, abstract: It is seen that large quantities of agricultural crop residues are being wasted. A major disadvantage of most recyclable waste is their bulk i.e. it requires a large space for accommodation. It has been observed by bio-scientists that if the waste is burnt, this affects the soil microflora, results in loss of nitrogen and organic matter. Most bulky residues need some type of pre-incorporated physical processing or shredding to facilitate their rapid decomposition and mixing with the soil. It has been an established fact that finer particles (4 to 5 cm) decompose faster as compared to large particles. Shredder is ideal for disposal of course leaves, garden and agricultural wastes. Such as twinges, small branches, flower stalks straw, tree pruning etc. This scientific way returns the nutrients back to the soil in natural ways. Therefore the efforts must be concentrated towards effective utilization of all the wastes.Serious efforts in this direction provide rich dividends to the farmers as well as solve the disposal problems, minimize pollution effects, open up evens for starting rural industries and self-employment or gainful employment for rural youth. It is more relevant way to avoid migration of youth from villages to the urban area in search of employment.Despite their ...

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Environmental Sciences, , language: English, abstract: Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) is one of the largest carnivores of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS). Black bear-human conflict is a major concern throughout the eastern Himalayas and particularly in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal state. A study was undertaken to assess the Black bear-Human conflicts using Questionnaire surveys within the fringe villages of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS), West Bengal during the period June-July 2013 by applying snowball-sampling technique. The black bear-human conflicts recorded were in three forms: crop raiding, livestock predation, human attacks and sometimes even death of humans. Crop damage was observed to be the most common type of conflict as reported by more than 80% of the respondents. The extent of crop damage was intense in the month of June-September, mainly concentrated along forest boundary areas which can be related to the cropping pattern and pre-hibernation period of black bears. Crop damage and livestock damage was estimated for the areas surveyed. The traditional methods adopted by the villagers to scare or chase off bear included, shouting, drumming empty tin, Bamboo netted fencing , keeping guard dogs and handmade fire mashals (Pultho). However these methods are hardly effective because their applicability lies when the villagers know about the presence of bears in their fields, which is very rare as...

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Engineering - General, Basics, Flinders University (School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics), language: English, abstract: In this thesis, experimental, analytical and numerical analysis are used for distributed parameter plate structure modeling, an infinite-dimensional and a very high-order plate mathematical transfer function model is derived based on modal analysis and numerical analysis results. A feed-through truncated plate model which minimizing the effect of truncated modes on spatial low-frequency dynamics of the system by adding a spatial zero frequency term to the truncated model is provided and numerical software MATLAB is used to compare the feed-through truncated plate model with traditional balanced reduction plate model which is used to decrease the dimensions and orders of the infinite-dimensional and very high-order plate model. Active vibration control strategy is presented for a flexible plate structure with bonded three self-sensing magnetic transducers which guarantee unconditional stability of the closed-loop system similar as collocated control system. Both multi-mode SISO and MIMO control laws based upon positive position feedback is developed for plate structure vibration suppression. The proposed multi-mode PPF controllers can be tuned to a chosen number of modes and increase the damping of the plate structure so as to minimize the chosen number of resonant responses. Stability c...

Most developing countries are facing difficulties in providing sufficient animal protein for their population. The cost of feed is very high and this has made livestock production very expensive. Since energy is one of the most expensive segments of a poultry ration, accurate knowledge of the available energy content of feedstuffs is necessary to formulate the most economical least-cost rations. This research work determines (i) the true metabolizable energy (TME) of maize pap waste (MPW) and rice milling waste (RMW), (ii) the growth response of broiler birds to diets containing graded levels of MPW and RMW, (iii) the effects of dietary inclusion of MPW and RMW on internal organs and nutrient retention of broiler birds and, (iv) the cost effectiveness of feeding broiler starters and finishers with diets containing graded levels of these agro-industrial by-products. An important feature of the TME assay is the reproducibility of its data between laboratories. The findings are novel and should be recommended for feed millers, animal nutritionists and research institutions.

Aubergine is an important dietary vegetable grown all over the country. The crop is subjected to high degree of instability in production, mainly on account of losses caused by different insect pests at different stages of the crop. Meghalaya (part of North Eastern Himalayas)is highly weather dynamic which are most conducive for development of different insect species and their natural enemies. Recently it has been observed that minor pests are becoming major in some commercial crops. Therefore, periodical surveillance may help to recognize the relative economic importance of different pests on that crop. Nearly 25.82 to 92.50% damage is attributed due to shoot and fruit borer. Management of this notorious pest by using conventional insecticides and synthetic pyrethroids has been found effective. However, indiscriminate use of insecticides has resulted in development of resistance, environmental pollution,bio-accumulation and bio-magnifications of toxic residues which leads to ecological imbalance. Considering these entire quandaries and to keep uncontaminated biodiversity, the study was conducted to evaluate some Eco-friendly insecticides as well as pheromone for their bio-efficacy.

In Ethiopia, the agricultural sector is a corner stone of the economic and social life of the people. The livestock sector in Ethiopia contributes 12% and 33% of the total and agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP), respectively, and provides livelihood for 65% of the population. The sector also accounts for 12-15% of the total export earnings. These livestock genetic resources are important or vital to development of the economic ,social and environmental of the one country. The diverse agro-ecology and agronomic practice prevailing in the country together with the huge population of livestock in general and poultry in particular, could be a promising attribute to boost up the sector and increase its contribution to the total agricultural output as well as to improve the living standards of the poor livestock keepers. Poultry production, as one segment of livestock production, has a peculiar privilege to...
