Samuel Maireg Biresaw The Legal and Institutional Framework of Deposit Insurance Scheme in Ethiopia. Design Considerations, Legal and Institutional Framework

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Law - Miscellaneous, grade: 83, Addis Ababa University (Post Graduate Studies), course: Business Law, language: English, abstract: This paper tries to provide the legal and institutional framework of deposit insurance scheme in Ethiopia. Utilizing the cross-sectional and time series variation in the existence of deposit insurance schemes all over the world from the experience of other countries, international organizations on deposit insurance such as the IMF, the FSF, the Basle committee, the IADI and the contextual realities of the banking sector in the country, the researcher finds that the establishment of explicit deposit insurance scheme in the banking sector significantly reduces, on one hand the risk taking of banks and the other the sustainability of the entire financial sector. Though Ethiopia has for long established an implicit system of depositors' protection, the findings of this study supports the hypothesis that the banking sector should not for long stick only to the implicit mechanisms of depositors protection. As a result the FDRE government should come up with the mechanisms of establishing the deposit insurance scheme in the country while at the same time devising strategies to phase out the long existing implicit protection scheme in the country. In this and other related contexts the paper has provided details on the establishment of the legal and institutional framework of deposit insurance scheme in...

In the aftermath of the financial crisis, capital management has become a critical factor in value creation for banks and other financial institutions. Although complex and subject to regulatory change, the strategic importance of capital management became apparent during the crisis and has moved the subject to the top of corporate agendas. Bank and Insurance Capital Management is an essential guide to help banks and insurance companies understand and manage their capital position. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, it provides proven techniques for managing bank capital, as well as explaining key capital management perspectives, including accounting, regulatory, risk and capital management and corporate finance. It also shows how to analyze a firm's stakeholders such as depositors, policy holders, debt holders and shareholders, and manage their expectations, and how to align risk and capital management so as to best optimize the return on capital and preserve capital in periods of stress. Economic capital is also discussed in depth, as are the practicalities of bank and insurance M&A, and the book also shows how financial innovations can be used to optimise the capital position and how diversification effects are reflected in the capital position. This book will arm readers with the knowledge and skills needed to understand how capital management can improve capital structure and performance, achieving an optimal cost of, and return on capital, creating value as a result.

Indonesia, with over 240 million people and rich of natural resources and abundant human resources, is very attractive for investors operating in wide array of industries. Many reports on Human Resource Management (HRM) and the English journals have written about the developing countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia (countries such as Hong Kong, China, and India), but surprisingly, writing on HRM issues in Indonesia has been rare and mainly limited to labor economics and macro-level Human Resources Development. Therefore, this thesis intends to make a contribution to literatures of HRM issues in Indonesia, with the example for German companies which are establishing their subsidiaries in Indonesia. This book examines Human Resource Management Issues in Indonesia from environment context such as political, economical, socio-cultural, technological, environmental and legal perspective (PESTEL Analysis); culture dimension difference between Indonesia and Germany; and the current issues of managing human resources in Indonesia by firms, especially for multinational companies, such as issues of general condition of labors, recruitment and selection process, compensation appraisal, performance management, trade unions and gender.Regarding HRM issues, the study has also shown that foreign companies have many threats, if they establish their subsidiaries in Indonesia. But on the other hand, Indonesia has some strengths and already improved some essential sectors that should be consider...

Urgessa Tilahun Analysis of Life Insurance

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: A, Addis Ababa University (Addis Ababa University School of Commerce), language: English, abstract: Insurance business was introduced into Ethiopia based on mutual assistances and its modern form traces back to 1905, when bank of Abyssinia began to underwrite fire and marine insurance policy, as an agent to foreign insurance company. The general objective of the study was to analysis the insurance services in the Nile Insurance Company by giving special attention focusing on life insurance. Primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire. In addition, secondary data were extracted from relevant sources to supplement the data obtained from the survey. The result of this study reveals that gross written premium and net written premium showed on increasing trend. But there is an ups and down of the percentage change because of unhealthy completion between non private and other private insurance companies. Secondly even if there are new classes of life insurance that was sold in Nile Insurance Company, the structure of life insurance in terms of diversification of the source of revenues is limited to small classes of the business. The amount of the premium collected and claims paid in these classes of the insurance is not proportionally distributed. The end result of the data also shows that there is a direct correlation between premium collections and the claim payments i.e. the classes of...

Social Science and Power in Indonesia

The premise of Social Science and Power in Indonesia is that the role and development of social sciences in Indonesia over the past fifty years are inextricably related to the shifting requirements of power. What is researched and what is not, which frameworks achieve paradigmatic status while others are marginalized, and which kinds of social scientists become influential while others are ignored are all matters of power. These and other important themes and issues are critically explored by some of Indonesia's foremost social scientists in this seminal work.

Villages in Indonesia

The wide variety of ethnic groups in Indonesia is reflected in the ethnic diversity among Indonesian villages. Until now, descriptive studies of village life have been virtually nonexistent except in the Dutch language. This collection of comprehensive surveys of thirteen villages in Indonesia provides the first major study of this fundamental level of Indonesian society in the post-colonial period. The studies are based on first-hand field experience by outstanding Indonesian, Dutch, and American scholars. The villages included are representative of the variety of social, political, economic, and religious systems in the major island regions: Sumatra, Java, Bali, Sumbawa, Timor, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Ambon, and West Irian. Most of the contributors are anthropologists, but a sociologist, an agronomist, and an authority on adat law are also represented. Although the articles reflect the particular interests of the individual authors, certain general anthropological topics - such as demography, settlement patterns, subsistence economy, land tenure, and social and political structures - are covered in each to allow for comparisons among the studies. The editor has added a history of Indonesian village studies, and in a concluding chapter he makes general observations about village life in Indonesia. In addition to illustrating the range of Indonesia's ethnic diversity, these village surveys provide greater understanding of the social phenomena and processes that form a basic ...

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, LMU Munich (Munich School for Management), course: Executive Master of Insurance, language: English, abstract: The following master thesis covers the psychological drivers of insurance fraud. In this scientific paper it shall be explained how insurance fraudsters try to vindicate their behavior and which forms of reasoning are therefor used. Insurance fraud itself is defined as a fraud to the detriment of an insurance company by the policy holder or a third party with the aim of obtaining unjustified coverage, demanding a false payment of damages on the merits or to the extent of paying a lower insurance premium. The fraudulent behavior starts with consciously inaccurate information during application and extends up to manipulation in the context of loss. The legal consequences of insurance fraud are the same as of any other fraudulent behavior, like a fine or a short period of imprisonment. Furthermore the insurance company can claim indemnity demands or recourse or the insured can lose his coverage. It is reckoned that the annual losses of German insurance sector caused by insurance fraud are four billion Euro and that especially in the line of automobile insurance approximately every tenth notification of claim bases on fraudulent background. About 90 percent of insurance brokers report that they already were in contact with fraudulent clients and a common line in the insu...

Mary F. Somers Peranakan Chinese Politics In Indonesia

This report is the latest of the studies of the Chinese minority in Indonesia to be published by the Cornell Modern Indonesia Project. The Project has a long-term interest in this subject, and earlier studies which it has published include Giok-Lan Tan's The Chinese of Sukabumi and Donald E. Willmott's The National Status of the Chinese in Indonesia 1900-1958. In the present Interim Report Mary F. Somers undertakes to view the overseas Chinese question as part of the politics of Indonesia, concentrating on the persons of Chinese descent who are Indonesian citizens. She devotes particular attention to the peranakan Chinese organization, Baperkip and the role it has played, both in Indonesia's Chinese community and generally on the Indonesian political scene. She is also concerned with the reaction of the peranakan Chinese to the possibility of cultural assimilation into Indonesian society and the willingness of the Indonesians to accept them. After gaining her B.A. in History and Chinese Language at Trinity College in Washington, D.C., Miss Somers entered Cornell University in 1958 as a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Government and Southeast Asia Program. Following an initial period of research at Cornell and an intensive study of the Chinese (Mandarin) and Indonesian languages, she carried out research in Indonesia from December 1961 to May 1963 under a Foreign Area Training Fellowship. In 1956, approximately a year after Professor Willmott's return from Indonesia, the Modern Indonesia Project published as an Interim Report his study of the national status of the Chinese in Indonesia. Subsequently, following helpful comments by Indonesian and Western scholars who had read this study and after having accumulated a considerable amount of additional data, Dr. Willmott undertook to refine and augment his earlier study, while also carrying it forward chronologically through 1958.The present volume represents, then, a substantial expansion of his earlier Interim Report with considerable new data relating not only to the period 1955-1958 but also to the years 1900-1955. Dr. Willmott is particularly well qualified to undertake this study. He was born in China, a British subject, in 1925, living there until 1946 when he came to the United States to enroll in Oberlin College, from which he received his B.A. in 1950. Prior to his stay in Indonesia, he spent a year of resident graduate study at the University of Michigan and three at Cornell University, the emphasis of his work being in sociology and social psychology. He arrived in Indonesia with a command of the Indonesian and Chinese languages and a substantial knowledge of Indonesian and Chinese culture. Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, grade: D+, The Australian National University (Fenner School of Environment and Society), course: Independent Research Project, language: English, abstract: Forest plantations are important in Indonesia for both conservation and development aspects of forest management. They can provide a sustainable supply of wood resources to meet the increasing demands of wood processing industries, rather than escalating pressure on natural forests reserved for conservation. Income from plantation forests can address the economic marginalisation of forest dependent people. Over the last three decades, three strategies have been put into practice to stimulate the development of both large-scale and small-scale plantation forestry in Indonesia: farm forestry, community forestry and community-company partnership. The success, however, has been limited. This paper reviews experience of these strategies in Indonesia, and considers this in the context of criteria and indicators for sustainable plantation development suggested in the literature. It then develops an analytical framework to assess whether a new policy proposed in Indonesia, "the People Plantation Forest" (PPF) policy, is likely to stimulate community-based tree growing activities. Our analysis suggests that out of six elements identified in the framework, local institutional and capacity building, along with production technology and market acces...

Tri Hayuning Tyas Pasung. Family Experience of Dealing with .The Deviant. in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, Indonesia

The province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, Indonesia, continues to face the challenges of rebuilding after prolonged military conflict and the devastating tsunami in December 2004. In Aceh, as in other parts of Indonesia, people with mental ill health problems continue to be physically restrained and confined - a practice known in Bahasa Indonesia as pasung - as a way of dealing with problematic behaviours, in settings where there are serious deficiencies in mental health services. The impression that pasung is an 'inhumane' practice should be examined within a broader context in order to offer durable solutions for giving care to a person who has a mental health problem. Using xploratory-ethnographic methods, in this study I examined the reasons that lead families to decide that pasung was the only option available to them, families' explanations of mental illness, including deviant attitudes, emotional expressions and behaviors displayed by the individual who was subjected to pasung and individual subjective experience of being in pasung. The result of this study is intended to contribute to community-based mental health efforts in the region and Indonesia in general.

Franklin B. Weinstein Indonesian Foreign Policy and the Dilemma of Dependence. From Sukarno to Soeharto

How can an underdeveloped country like Indonesia draw on outside resources for its national development without sacrificing its independence? Approaching the problem from the vantage point of the Indonesian elite, this important work explores the complex interactions between domestic political factors and the shaping of foreign policy. To illustrate the ways in which underdevelopment has affected Indonesia's international participation, Professor Weinstein presents a graphic picture of what Indonesia's leaders see when they view the outside world, and he systematically seeks out the sources of their perceptions. He shows that most of the elite see the international system as dominated by exploitative powers that cannot be relied on to assist Indonesia's development. He examines the relationship between perceptions and politics under both Sukarno and Soeharto and offers an illuminating comparison of the bases of foreign policy under each leader, revealing dramatic changes and surprising continuities. His cogent analysis helps to explain the sharp reversal of policy in 1966, and his conclusions form a convincing hypothesis that can be tested in other Third World countries. This book, now brought back to life as a member of Equinox Publishing's Classic Indonesia series, will attract specialists in Southeast Asia, as well as readers with a broader interest in the politics and economics of underdeveloped countries.FRANKLIN B. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Economy - Health Economics, grade: 1,7, University of Trier, language: English, abstract: The desirability of micro health insurance is usually beyond doubt but the sustainable provision is a different matter. Even traditional insurance economics have issues which complicate the adequate coverage of risks but the problems in the microinsurance environment are even more dicult to handle. When looking for an approach on how to analyse risks in micro health insurance and how to insure them one will fail to find one. So far, data is very rare. Usually it is only possible to find a small amount of data extracted out of small scale studies/ evaluations. The microinsurance database of the World Bank is an attempt to collect all kinds of relevant data concerning microinsurance but so far, there is only some basic data for six countries.Recently there has been the attempt to start an analytical framework on how to assess insurability of risk in microinsurance. Biener and Eling provide a starting point by adjusting the insurability criteria of Berliner to a microinsurance environment. This paper will continue the work in the area of micro health insurance and suggests a further criterion to be used when assessing the insurability of risk.

Vitaliy Drozdenko Premium Calculations in Insurance Actuarial Approach

Different forms of insurance are important parts of our every day life. We buy car insurance, health insurance, traveling insurance and other types of contracts when we agree to pay a relatively small price in order to get a protection against significantly large uncertain prospective losses. One of the fundamental questions in the insurance industry is haw much a certain contract should cost. Price for the contract cannot be too low, because in this case, the insurance company will not have enough money to cover all the claims, and, at the same time, price for the contract cannot be too high because the contract will not be attractive for the customers. As we see, it is very important to keep the right balance when we price a contract. This book is devoted to the analysis of the most widely used methods for pricing of insurance contracts with known distributions of the future losses. The book can be interesting for practitioners working in insurance industry, students of actuarial and financial study programs, and for other readers with some knowledge of probability calculus.

Deliar Noer Administration of Islam in Indonesia

With the size of its Muslim population greater than in any other country-an overwhelming majority of its 135 million people regarding themselves as adherents of Islam-it is natural that for Indonesia serious questions should arise as to the position of Islam within the state. Indeed that has been the case, and ever since the country proclaimed its independence there has been an ongoing tension between the attempts of Muslims to shape society in conformity with the tenets of Islam and the efforts of successive governments to control that religion as a political and social force.Although an increasing number of scholarly studies have been concerned with the endeavors of Muslim leaders to influence the course of Indonesia's social and political development, very little has been written about the other side of this equation-the politics of the government for controlling and regulating Islam. In this essay Deliar Noer has broken important new ground by providing significant insights into this badly neglected aspect of the relationship. For this task Noer brings to bear strong credentials-extensive research on the political and social history of Islam in twentieth-century Indonesia, a solid training in political science and an intellectual integrity that has won him respect abroad as well as in Indonesia. He is the author of The Modernist Muslim Movement in Indonesia: 1900-1942 (Oxford University Press, 1973) and of numerous scholarly articles. After securing his Ph.D. in Politi...

This paves way for huge untapped market for health insurance in India. Syrstad Olav The Daily Liquidity Effect in a Floor System

This paper analyses the liquidity effect in Norway by examining the relationship between a range of liquidity variables and five different measures of the short-term interbank premium. In a floor system the key policy rate is equal to banks' deposit rate in the central bank, and as such, this analysis provides new information on the liquidity effect in a floor system. Both excess liquidity (total central bank reserves in the banking system) and structural liquidity (central bank reserves in the system before Norges Banks' market operations) have, as expected, a negative a significant effect on almost all dependent variables. Furthermore, in periods of financial turmoil European and Norwegian banks may face higher USD rates in the interbank market either because of a general USD liquidity premium or an institution specific credit premium. My analysis provides additional insight in the division between the liquidity premium and the credit premium in a way, to my knowledge, not done in earlier literature. The results indicate that during the financial crisis (2007-2009) the liquidity premium dominated in USD as the availability of credit deteriorated.

Gain a holistic view of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market risk transfer Increasing agricultural production and food security remain key challenges for mankind. In order to meet global food demand, the Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that production has to increase by 50% by 2050 and requires large investments. Agricultural insurance and financial instruments have been an integral part to advancing productivity and are becoming more important in increasingly globalized and specialized agricultural supply chains in the wake of potentially more frequent and severe natural disasters in today’s key producing markets. Underwriting, pricing and transferring agricultural risks is complex and requires a solid understanding of the production system, exposure, perils and the most suitable products, which vastly differ among developed and developing markets. In the last decade, new insurance schemes in emerging agricultural markets have greatly contributed to the large growth of the industry from a premium volume of US$10.1 billion (2006) to US$30.7 billion (2017). This growth is bound to continue as insurance penetration and exposure increase and new schemes are being developed. Agricultural (re)insurance has become a cornerstone of sovereign disaster risk financing frameworks. Agricultural Risk Transfer introduces the main concepts of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market risk transfer that are discussed through industry case studies. It also discusses best industry practices for all main insurance products for crop, livestock, aquaculture and forestry risks including risk assessment, underwriting, pricing, modelling and loss adjustment. Describes agricultural production risks and risk management approaches Covers risk transfer of production and financial risks through insurance and financial instruments Introduces modelling concepts for the main perils and key data sources that support risk transfer through indemnity- and index-based products Describes risk pricing and underwriting approaches for crop, livestock, aquaculture and forestry exposure in developed and developing agricultural systems Become familiar with risk transfer concepts to reinsurance and capital markets Get to know the current market landscape and main risk transfer products for individual producers, agribusinesses and governments through theory and comprehensive industry case studies Through Agricultural Risk Transfer, you’ll gain a holistic view of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market solutions which will support better underwriting, more structured product development and improved risk transfer.

This paper attempts to establish that this practice is anti-competitive nature, drawing on various aspects of Irish, European and American sources of competition and insurance law.Insurance Steering in the Motor Trade Industry is the practice by where insurers pressure, mislead and forcefully imply to consumers that they must use one of their "approved" or "preferred" repairers. While this practice benefits the insurance company, and often even the consumer due to financial incentives to take the insurers advice, it has led to many body-shops across the country being excluded. Any bodyshop not in this exclusive network of repairers have found themselves in a rather precarious position. While complaints have been made that this is anti-competitive and harming the market, as well as consumer welfare and choice, the claims have failed to be heard in Ireland.

Benard Kilel Barriers to micro-insurance outreach for pastoralists and crop farmers in rural areas in Kenya

Micro insurance in Kenya is still undeveloped compared to micro credit and micro savings due to the fact that it offers no immediate benefits to the insured. Insurance companies in Kenya have been taking long to compensate their clients in the case of any peril and therefore insurance is seen as a way of stealing the money from the citizens. This thesis has looked into ways of making micro insurance locally available to both large and small scale crop farmers. It has gone a step further to investigate ways of merging up micro insurance and micro credit by using insurance as collateral to acquire loan. It was realized that there is a possibility of selling an insurance contract to a buyer of a produce whereby the farmer can later pay the premium after the harvest of the produce. Moreover, there is a possibility of the harvest being used as collateral when it is in the warehouse of the Kenya National and Cereals Produce Board (NCPB). This increases the creditworthiness of the otherwise not qualifying-for-credit farmer as well as the produce being stored waiting to hit the market highs in order to be sold for profit. To make use of the technology, this paper calls for the development of a mobile application that will enable farmers access information in real time on their mobile phones and thereby being able act accordingly.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, grade: 2 (B), Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Economics), course: Intercultural Communication, language: English, abstract: Through the process of globalization, managers often have to deal with people from other countries with different cultural backgrounds. This cultural background includes not only the language; it means a completely different way of feeling, thinking, behaving and as a result also conflict management. Constructive conflict management is a competence which is of particular importance in international management. Furthermore, in an intercultural context, a manager not only needs to know how to handle conflicts in general, but also how his negotiation partners usually deal with them. This is important because the right way to solve a conflict i. e. in North America is not necessarily the right way in Indonesia. When coping with conflicts in international business negotiations, international managers must be aware of the fact that appropriate ways of solving conflicts in Western cultures like North America can very often be completely unacceptable in Asian cultures like Indonesia. The aim of this paper is to analyse typical conflict management strategies in North America and Indonesia, thereby highlighting major differences in appropriate conflict management between them.

Widjojo Nitisastro Population Trends in Indonesia

The first comprehensive demographic study of Indonesia, this book makes an important contribution to the understanding of the political and economic problems - both past and present - of the world's fourth most populous country. It demonstrates that the period 1970 to 1980 will be particularly crucial for Indonesia and will require careful social and economic planning. The author, who is acknowledged to be Indonesia's foremost economist demographer, amasses and corrects population estimates made during the era of Dutch rule, including material from as early as 1775. He discusses the census of 1930 and the impact of events of the 1940's - World War II, the Japanese occupation, and the Indonesian revolution - on population trends. He points out, for example, that low birth and high mortality rates during the subsequent period, suggest that the mean age of Indonesia's working age population is undergoing a radical rejuvenation.Using the census of 1961 as a base, Mr. Widjojo projects Indonesia's population to 1991, forecasting the probable growth rates of the total population and of its various components. He shows how the population breaks down into extremely uneven age groups and suggests the serious consequences of this situation. He emphasizes that the dramatic increases in the number of 15-to-24-year-olds that occurred in the population during the second half of the 1960's and that are projected for the 1970's make careful preparation for the futur...

It is innovative in three ways: firstly, it brings together financial and corporate governance indicators as explanatory variables; secondly, it uses an extensive number of dependent and explanatory variables compared with previous studies on Russia; thirdly, it classifies the ownership of banking institutions using the definition of majority ownership at 20% level. The findings suggest that there are some differences in the determinants of bank's profitability by ownership type: personnel cost ratio and bank portfoliocomposition ratio dominate in state-influenced banks; capitalisation, reserves and default risk ratios dominate in domestic private-owned banks; and capitalisation ratios dominate in foreign-owned banks. Operating efficiency and credit risk are important factors influencing performance across all ownership types. Furthermore, control variables such as inflation, GDP growth, the size of the banking sector, and the bank asset share ratio are significant, suggesting that they play an important role ...

Thi Thu Huong Dang A comparative analysis of the strategies the New Order and UMNO regimes in Indonesia and Malaysia adopted to deal with Islam in 1965 - 1998

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2005 in the subject Politics - Political Systems - General and Comparisons, grade: 65, University of Leeds, course: International Studies, 58 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This dissertation provides a comparative analysis of the strategies the New Order and UMNO regimes in Indonesia and Malaysia adopted to deal with Islam from 1965 to 1998. During these three decades, the two regimes were similar in viewing Islam as a big challenge. However, the strategies they employed to deal with it were different. President Suharto followed a two-pronged strategy of promoting cultural Islam and at the same time, emasculating political Islam. Meanwhile, the UMNO leadership embarked on their comprehensive Islamization project. As a result, Islam as a social and cultural force grew tremendously in Indonesia and Malaysia. Yet in national politics, Suharto pushed Islam from center to periphery, then since mid-1980s he courted Islam and pulled it out of the periphery again. In Malaysia, the Islamization race between UMNO and PAS moved Islam from the fringe to the center of mainstream politics. The work concludes that Islam was systematically manipulated by both regimes in the period of 1965-1998, and the two strategies led to the emergence of two different models of Islamization in two countries: a "think-tank" focused project in Malaysia and a bottom-up process in Indonesia.
