Performance measurement and management (PM&M) poses daunting challenges to organizations in terms of meeting multiple stakeholders' objectives. The performance of three directory-based cache- coherence protocols; strict request-response, intervention forwarding and reply forwarding are evaluated via simulation on the SOME-Bus, which is a fiber-optic interconnection network supporting DSM. The simulated system contains 64 nodes, each of which has a processor, cache controller, directory controller and output channel. Simulations have been conducted for each protocol to measure average processor utilization and average network latency for varying values of DSM parameters such as the ratio of the mean channel service time to mean thread run time (T/R), probability of a cache block being in modified state {P(M)}, the fraction of write misses {P(W)} and under different traffic patterns. The results reveal that the performance of all protocols decreases under all traffic patterns as P(W),P(M) or T/R increases. The effect of P(W) on the performance of the protocols reduces as P(M) increases. Reply forwarding performs the best for high P(M) values, intervention forwarding yields the best performance for low P(M) and high P(W) values and strict request-response is the best protocol under hot-region (HR) traffic.

The focus of this work is the design and performance evaluation of Network on Chip (NoC) based multi-core hardware accelerators for computational biology. Sequence analysis and phylogenetic reconstruction are the two problems in this domain which have been addressed here. An effective approach to speed up such operations is to integrate a very high number of processing elements in a single chip so that the massive scales of fine-grain parallelism inherent in this application can be exploited efficiently. Network-on-Chip (NoC) is a very efficient method to achieve such large scale integration. Specifically, we (i) propose optimized NoC architectures for different sequence alignment algorithms that were originally designed for distributed memory parallel computers, (ii) a custom NoC architecture for solving the breakpoint phylogeny problem (iii) provide a thorough comparative evaluation of their respective performance and energy dissipation.

Onion is one of the most important vegetable crops grown in all countries. In Egypt, onion is a major export crop. The total cultivated area of onion is about 146336 feddan (61485.7 ha). This area produced about 1.9 million Mg .The aim of the present study is to design, fabricate and evaluate an onion peeling machine to be used in small and medium production units, such as restaurants, hotels and small onion drying units. It could be used for large production units with some modifications, such as onion drying factories.An onion peeler was evaluated. Some physical properties of onion related to peeling process were determined. Peeler productivity, peeling efficiency index, actual peeling efficiency, the removed peels percentage, the onion mechanical injury and energy requirements as affected by onion bulb size, drum rotational speed, peeling residence time and batch load were investigated. The peeler performance was improved by adding water and air pressure systems; the peeler was also evaluated under the same previous operational parameters. Economical assessment of the onion peeling machine was carried out to determine the final peeling cost at different operational parameters.

In this book, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) sanitary sewerage system was appraised. Using a developed evaluation criteria and scoring format, the system performance was evaluated and found to be 50%, hence necessitating that an improvement design be carried out. The improvement design consisting of an optimized sewer extension network was put forward. The dynamic programming - optimization techniques as employed by SEWER 3.0 software, has been utilized to identify and determine the best pipe-slopes and sizes combinations for the proposed sewer extension network. The output of the SEWER 3.0 analysis reveals that an additional pipe length of 3,298 m is required for the proposed network at an optimized total cost of $161,097 USD). In order to make proper evaluation of the existing WSP, the ponds were visited, and influent and effluent qualities of the ponds were determined and compared with standard effluent quality requirements. The results obtained for the suspended solids and faecal coliform quality parameters show that WSP treatment performance is generally low on the average. This led to a higher than normal total sludge to be generated.
