In developing countries children experience repeated episodes of diarrhea and acute respiratory infection (ARI), treatment of these child illnesses still remains a challenge. This study seeks to investigate factors associated with the treatment of ARI and diarrhoea among children under-five years in Zambia based on nationally representative 2007 Zambia Demographic Health Survey (ZDHS) data. Determinants of treatment are varied, thus it is interesting to investigate which ones are, among the many determinants of treatment. On average, out of the total 909 (15.6%) and 1447 (22.6%) children who had diarrhea and ARI respectively two weeks prior the 2007 DHS, 32.5% and 34.3% did not receive any treatment for diarrhea and ARI respectively. Ringson John The Coordinated Governance System in Zimbabwe

This book assesses the effectiveness of HIV and AIDS intervention strategies within a coordinated governance framework in Gutu. The study was largely informed by the basic human needs theories such as the hierarchy of needs by Maslows (1943) and Burton (1990) and the wheel model by Tigere et al (2006) respectively. Various HIV and AIDS intervention strategies were investigated both qualitatively and quantitatively. Such intervention strategies include right based advocacy, PSS, CHBC and T&C selected through the researcher's conscious choice as major intervention strategies. The effectiveness of the above strategies was analyzed in terms of how each intervention strategy meets the physical and psychological human needs. As such the study found out that implementers of HIV and AIDS must shift from symptom to the underlying causes. The reason being that in the bygone years sexual behavior was seen as the major driver and the pandemic was regarded only to be a biomedical challenge that could be resolved on medical grounds. However, this study established the socio-political and economic governance as major key drivers of HIV and AIDS prevalence not only in Zimbabwe but world-over.

They are produced to be used instead of sugar, have the same taste as sugar, are not considered as harmful to health, have low calorie and/or without calories. Increasing with the prevalence of obesity, individuals wishing to reduce energy intake have talented particularly to energy-free sweeteners and low-calorie products. The products made with sweeteners are equivalent to the product made with sugar being preferred by producers and consumers. Aaron Murchan Is a Cosmopolitan Approach to Humanitarian Intervention feasible within the current International Order

Projektarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Thema: Völkerrecht und Menschenrechte, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Humanitarian intervention is an issue at the centre of international relations and is shrouded in uncertainty. The logic supporting humanitarian intervention is clear in that it aims to save lives and end conflict. Yet, many questions remain as to what is the correct approach to humanitarian intervention. This dissertation aims to clarify these questions through exploring a cosmopolitan approach to humanitarian intervention. Drawing on extensive research, a thin cosmopolitan approach is promoted as the most feasible within the current international order. This approach is developed through an exploration of ethical cosmopolitanism which addresses such questions as when to intervene, who may intervene and how to execute the intervention. A cosmopolitan approach also requires institutional change but the more radical and traditional ideas that cosmopolitanism is associated with such as the creation of a world government or a world army clash with the contemporary international order of states. For this reason, a regional humanitarian intervention force alongside a thin cosmopolitan ethical basis capable of functioning within the current international order will be proposed.Ultimately, having utilized the framework of the contemporary international order it is concluded that a cosmopolitan approach to humanitarian intervention is f...

Anna Lena Hallmann Food Advertising to Children. A Critical Evaluation of Public, Governmental and Corporate Responsibilities in Germany

With increasing levels of child obesity, the food industry and its advertising techniques are ever more in the centre of public and academic discussion. While such discussion is complicated by the subjectivity of ethical understanding, the existing body of research also lacks evidence for the actual effects of child-directed advertising. In order to advance a solution in the persisting conflict, this paper critically examines public, governmental and corporate responsibilities. A reflection of theoretical and empirical research is therefore complemented by the collection of primary data - drawn from qualitative interviews with children and their parents. As means of implications for practice, the author drafts an organisational concept, namely the 'Initiative for the responsible use and creation of children's food advertising'.

Monika Dahiya Prevalence of Oral Manifestations of HIV Infection

This book outlines the current epidemiology of HIV associated oral lesions globally and stratifies countries falling under all six WHO regional offices according to high, medium and low prevalence of oral manifestations of HIV infection. Currently there are many knowledge gaps in the prevalence of oral lesions related to HIV infection from different regions as majority of the countries have no database or referral system for these kind of lesions. This is an obstacle to the implementation of various HIV prevention and health promotion programmes as oral lesions are strong indicators of HIV infection, invariably often are the first lesions to be identified and reportedly, are markers of disease progression and parallel the changes in various laboratory markers like CD4 cell count and HIV viral load. Having such a database can prove to be very pivotal in our fight against AIDS because of its diagnostic and prognostic significance. This work is amongst some early studies to show the prevalence globally across countries falling under all six WHO regional offices.

This special issue is a «how to» on overcoming the many systems-level challenges in K–12 public education to implement effective reading interventions for the vast numbers of students reading below grade level. It emphasizes building researcher–practitioner partnerships, providing ongoing professional development for teachers, and removing institutional barriers to change as the keys to effective reading intervention. Interventions for the upper grades focus on the challenges of coaxing content-area teachers to learn new routines for building background knowledge, teaching academic vocabulary, and conducting discussions to foster critical reading and knowledge application. In the primary grades, interventions follow a multi-tiered system of support where enhanced classroom instruction is supported by small-group intervention for struggling readers. The volume also discusses the importance of training special educators to implement data-based individuation. This is the 154th volume in this Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in this subject area. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts from that field.

Hege Kristin Ulvin The United States and the Norm of Non-Intervention

In this book, Hege Kristin Ulvin analyses the role of the norm of non-intervention in American use of military force, focusing on the administrations of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. It is often said that these two presidencies are very different from each other - not least with respect to the US role in the international society. This study suggests that the two administrations differ more in rhetoric than in substance regarding the use of military force. In the four cases analysed here, US national security was used as the first and foremost reason for US intervention. Arguments focusing on other factors, such as international security and humanitarian concerns, were to a large extent used to accompany the argument of national security. What seems to be more important to US intervention policy than person and political party is the long American tradition of exceptionalism, which seems to result in a United States placing itself above international arrangements and norms, claiming a right to act unilaterally. Ulvin's analysis indicates that as long as US conviction, resources and will of action are present, intervention will eventually happen.

The most interesting research questions of political economy are on those subjects which somehow injure our moral sensibilities, but where there is no clear policy avenue through which to address them. This book deals with just such a topic: while it is uncontroversial to say that a world without child labor would be better than one with, it is not clear that legislation, either national or international, will be successful in reducing it.This book presents some evidence that fits nicely with intuitions about child labor in the developing world. Regression analysis of panel data covering 150 countries from 1970-2004 shows that macroeconomic conditions are significant determinants of child labor, defined here as the percent of children ages 10-14 who participate in the workforce. The study shows that ratification of the ILO's child labor convention does not significantly predict lower levels of child labor, leaving the second part of the book to answer the question: If ratifying the child labor convention does not affect compliance, why do countries bother?

I realized that children with ASD prefer to deal with things and can be very creative in their own way. I figured out that maybe they can learn to fold and write, which are important tasks reinforced through occupational therapy. It was during my thesis writing when I came up with the idea of trying out origami or paper-folding as a form of intervention. My goal was to see if origami could significantly improve the attending skills and impulse-control behaviors of children with ASD at the preschool where I worked. To make the terminology shorter, the improvement of attending skills also means the reduction of inattention and the lengthening of attention span. The improvement of impulse control also meant the reduction of impulsivity. I developed an origami instructional manual to make sure that the intervention given to each child is consistent. The manual involves very simple origami instructions and involves some drawing and uses paper in varying sizes, colors and textures to keep the child interested. The result...
