Steve Zolno The Future of Democracy. Lessons From the Past and Present To Guide us on our Path Forward

What is democracy and where did it come from? Is it a new development or was it always present in human society? And perhaps the most important question: what can we do to preserve and strengthen democracy among the forces that oppose it?In this book we explore trends throughout history that have brought democratic – and undemocratic – government to people wherever civilization exists. We discuss where democracy has been most, and least, successful and why. But our most important task is to clarify what each of us can do, as politicians or ordinary citizens, to bring the benefits of democracy more fully into the personal and political lives of those who cherish it. Includes the section: Guide to Voting in a Democracy–

Can Educators Make a Difference. Experimenting with and Experiencing, Democracy in Education

As the title of this book suggests, how we understand, perceive and experience democracy mayhave a significant effect on how we actually engage in, and with, democracy. Within theeducational context, this is a key concern, and forms the basis of the research presented in thisvolume within a critical, comparative analysis. The Global Doing Democracy Research Project(GDDRP), which currently has some 70 scholars in over 20 countries examining how educatorsdo democracy, provides the framework in which diverse scholars explore a host of concerns related to democracy and democraticeducation, including the impact of neoliberalism, political literacy, critical engagement, teaching and learning for and about democracy, social justice, and the meaning of power/power relations within the educational context.Ultimately, the contributors of this book collectively ask: can there be democracy without a critically engaged education, and, importantly, what role do educators play in this context and process? Why many educators in diverse contexts believe that they areunable, dissuaded and/or prevented from doing thick democratic education is problematized in this book but the authors also seek toillustrate that, despite the challenges, barriers and concerns about doing democracy in education, something can, and should, be done todevelop, cultivate and ingratiate schools and society with more meaningful democratic practices and processes. This book breaks new ground by using a similar empirical me...

This monograph examines and discusses the engaging issue of good governance and civic engagement in an emerging democracy. Drawing insights from relevant academic and policy literature, it shows how discursive practices and normative principles can help to consolidate democratic governance in young and growing democracies. Using Nigeria as a case study, it demonstrates how the country strives to nurture her democracy and the place of civic engagement in stabilising democratic governance with some lessons drawn from some aspect of British democracy.

Does a democracy have a right to defend itself from groups and individuals within that democracy that actively attempt to do away with that very same democracy? Can it do so by using anti-democratic weapons? Should it? But what it the people that comprise that democracy are persuaded to do away with democratic principles? This stageplay is set in Europe during the 1970s when many countries were faced with this conundrum.

Defining Democracy seems like such a simple thing to do yet the evidence proves otherwise. We are here to discuss this paradox and to journey forward we are forced to acknowledge one simple and quite startling fact:THE FORM OF GOVERNMENT WE IDENTIFY AS 'DEMOCRACY' TODAY IS NOT, I REPEAT, IS NOT ACTUALLY DEMOCRACY!Question: Why are juries selected randomly by lottery? Why don't we elect jury members if election is such a vastly superior method of obtaining the best individuals to weigh crucial decisions? The hard truth of the matter is that, to the corrupt, true democracy is just bad for business. In other words, the 'Abortion of Democracy'did not happen by chance.

Authors Christopher Achen and Larry Bartels argue that the public, journalists, and political scientists rely on a group of common-sense understandings of democracy. The authors collectively refer to these beliefs as the “folk theory” of democracy. The folk theory presumes that people behave as engaged citizens and that election outcomes reflect public policy preferences. This assumption is inaccurate and misleading, and therefore presents a danger to democracy.Political scientists have tried in various ways to validate or systematize the intuitions on which the folk theory in based. Anthony Downs put forward a spatial model of voting, which supposes that individuals vote for the politicians who are closest to their own policy preferences. Democracy and Education is regarded as the seminal work on public education by one of the most important scholars of the century. It has been re-published in many editions and continuously in print ever since the original publication in 1916.John Dewey’s Democracy and Education addresses the challenge of providing quality public education in a democratic society. In this classic work Dewey calls for the complete renewal of public education, arguing for the fusion of vocational and contemplative studies in education and for the necessity of universal education for the advancement of self and society.

Aijan Sharshenova The European Union.s Democracy Promotion in Central Asia. A Study of Political Interests, Influence, and Development in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in 2007-2013

Brussels made democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and good governance its top co-operation priorities in the EU Strategy Framework towards Central Asia for 2007-2013. This book examines two interrelated questions: To what extent has EU democracy promotion in Central Asia been successful? And, to the extent that it was successful, why was it so?The book presents a comprehensive analytical framework for the evaluation of democracy promotion, including factors which may facilitate or hinder democratic development in Central Asia. It demonstrates the validity of a holistic approach to analyzing impediments of democracy promotion meaning that external pro-democratic support is affected by a variety of diverse factors whose impact can vary as international, regional, and domestic conditions change. The stable and rich authoritarian state of Kazakhstan is different from the much poorer Kyrgyzstan-a state prone to political instability, but also to democratic openings. By contrasting the success of democracy promotion in these two countries which have different strategic importance for the EU, this study provides valuable insights into how non-normative interests interfere with normatively driven policies.

Pasi Ihalainen The Springs of Democracy

During the First World War, conflicts between the people's sacrifices and their political participation led to crises of parliamentary legitimacy. This volume compares British, German, Swedish and Finnish debates on revolution, rule by the people, democracy and parliamentarism and their transnational links. The British reform, although more about winning the war than advancing democracy, restored parliamentary legitimacy, unlike in Germany, where Allied demands for democratisation made reform appear treasonous and fostered native German solutions. Sweden only adopted Western political models after major confrontations, but reforms saw it embark on its path to Social Democracy. In Finland, competing Russian revolutionary discourses and German- and Swedish-inspired appeals to legality brought about the deterioration of parliamentary legitimacy and a civil war. Only a republican compromise imposed by the Entente, following a royalist initiative in 1918, led to the construction of a viable polity.

A short, sharp intervention in the crucial debate about the future of democracy, which has been brought to a head by events from Brexit to the Trump phenomenon. We live in strange days in the history of democracy.Every serious politician in the Western world supports democracy. Yet when the EU Referendum and American Elections both delivered the ‘wrong’ result, elites challenged the merit of the people’s will, and some even tried to block it. Preferring unelected institutions, from technocrats to the courts, self-appointed higher minds questioned whether voters are fit to be trusted with their own futures. Ours is the age of “I support democracy, but…”And yet the answer will never be to impose limitations. Popular democracy must offer better choices, rather than removing choice altogether. It’s time to defend democracy and fight for more it, with no ifs, buts or backtracks.

Jussi Kurunmäki, Johan Strang Rhetorics of Nordic Democracy

Democracy is today a concept that is overwhelmingly positively evaluated almost everywhere. A lot has been written about socio-economic and cultural backgrounds of democratic regimes as well as their institutional settings. By contrast, not much is known about the political manoeuvres and speech acts by which 'democracy' has been tied to particular regions and cultures in concrete historical situations. This book discusses a series of efforts to rhetorically produce a particular Nordic version of democracy. It shows that the rhetorical figure 'Nordic democracy' was a product of the age of totalitarianism and the Cold War. It explores the ways in which 'Nordic democracy' was used, mainly by the social democrats, to provide the welfare politics with cultural and historical legitimacy and foundations. Thus, it also acknowledges the ideological and geopolitical context in which the 'Nordic welfare state' was conceptualised and canonised. The contributors of the book are specialists on Nordic politics and history, who share a particular interest in political rhetoric and conceptual history.

Pablo Ghetti Constitutional Exposure. A Postulation for Democracy to Come

CONSTITUTIONAL EXPOSURE identifies and then builds on the principal postulation in Jacques Derrida’s discourse on ‘democracy to come.’ First, Pablo Ghetti argues that Derrida’s key postulation in democracy to come lies in what is termed ‘constitutional exposure,’ i.e. exposure of the ‘constitutional’ experience of law (constitution–ruin, visibility–invisibility, friendship–enmity, universality–singularity). Second, he intensifies Derrida’s discourse by further addressing both law and the ‘to come.’There are two obstacles to Derrida’s constitutional exposure: his understanding of juridical law [droit] and the ‘to come’ as opposed to justice and sovereignty, respectively. As in democracy per se, what is needed of law and ‘to come’ is to insist upon ‘their’ exposure. Democracy ‘to come’ is a postulation that still has a ‘to come’ ultimately towards an overexposure as a radical democratic postulation with and beyond Derrida. Such a beyond is thought from within Derrida’s work and his sources, but also through critical legal thought, radical democratic theory, post-Marxism, and the philosophy of Jean-Luc Nancy. Working towards a more equal and fuller enjoyment of democracy and the exposed constitution of law, this book crafts various strategies and develops a language through which constitutional settings can be further studied and critiqued, and through which their democratic core can be defended and enhanced.

Most people would agree that democracy throughout the world is in deep trouble. From the polarizing politics of the United States to the endless refugee crisis in Europe to the rise in radical Islam, there is a widespread feeling that our way of life—political, cultural, and social—is under siege. But what if democracy itself is to blame? What if the current threats are not distortions of but inherent to democracy? What if the solution to our present ills is not “fixing” the system, but junking it entirely? Christophe Buffin de Chosal asks these forbidden questions, and answers them unarguably with Gallic wit and glittering style. If you read only one book on politics this year, let this be it!

Robert Corfe The Democratic Imperative

Democracy understood as people power, which is the only proper definition of the word, is put forward in this book as the panacea for resolving the most pressing issues of our time. But democracy as a practicable system hinges on many conditions which are seldom appreciated by our world leaders, international institutions, or relevant bodies of learning. The evolution of democracy as a system of government and way of life, and the problems to which the former gives rise is broadly discussed by the author. Of most significance are those situations, in both East and West, when democracy is ideologically used as a cover for ulterior purposes. It is powerfully argued that the left/right divide which for 200 years has served as the rationale for advancing social progress in sustaining democracy is now destroying it, as partly witnessed through the collapse of both party memberships and voting figures in most advanced industrial economies. This has occurred through the transformation of society and the world of work over the past 60 years, and has left our parliamentary representatives trapped in a time-warp of the past in their inability to meet the actuality of contemporary issues. It is clearly shown, through a variety of reasons, that democracy as an all-inclusive system of government is only workable within the nation state. This partly explains the crises of the EU, and the shortcomings of the UN's Security Council. The greatest threat to democracy, since it limits the po...

Soon after Arend Lijphart and Gerhard Lehmbruch had depicted consociational democracy as a viable alternative to majoritarian forms of democracy, a fierce debate about its wider applicability took root. Lijphart and Lehmbruch had presented the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland as cases of consociational democracies - but would the concept work in countries that are divided more deeply? For a good reason, the issue regained relevance and interest of scholars during the 1990s: Intra-state wars now took their tolls on an unprecedented scale - many of which had an ethnic dimension. It requires no statistical analysis to acknowledge ethnic divisions as one of the most serious sources of today's violent conflicts. In this context, it has been asked whether consociational democracy is a suitable and appropriate model to accommodate the diverse interests and cultures of groups in a multiethnic society. Is it a sustainable model able to prevent conflicts...

Mikko Valtonen Radical Democratic Education

The relationship between democracy and education is always one of the core questions when it comes to the existence, continuity, and development of a democratic society. In the spirit of the original sense of philosophy, this is, the loving of wisdom, Mikko Valtonen pursues in this book a perspective of a wise educator and asks through insightful philosophical analysis what could be the nature of the most wise and best education imaginable. The book consists of seven key dimensions of radical democratic education which include 1) democracy as a radical and progressive form of living, 2) liberating and therapeutic view on education, 3) melioristic worldview, 4) the ideal of self-critical reason, 5) hope as a fundamental attitude in education, 6) the ideal of peace and non-violence, and 7) synthesis of theory and practice. In the spirit of radical democracy theory, Valtonen defends the extension and radical deepening of democracy in all educational practices and understands democracy broadly as an active, communal, and value-based form of living deeply defining our whole human existence instead of being a mere quality of a political system.

Sunday Layi Oladipupo Roadmap to Nigerian Democracy. Issues and Challenges

Roadmap to Nigerian Democracy: Issues and Challenges examined the transition from military administration to civilian government in Nigeria. This piece covered the period between 1999 and 2007. It articulated the imbroglio that beclouded the transition with references to some of the inherent paradoxes. The book adopted utilitarianism to recommend the need for good governance that transcends the current practice of democracy in Nigeria. The book built on the utilitarian principle to advocate for a viable democratic culture that centred on sustainable development, adequate social and functional support scheme, which will enhance and guarantee social, economic and political pluralism. This social support scheme must in turn have poverty eradication as its major task. Thus, it has to create an enabling environment where there will be room for free education, free health care services, easy and accessible road network for transportation, etc., knowing full well that democracy that failed to eradicate poverty is not and can never be democracy in the real sense of it.

The system of liberal democracy provides the best political actors that provide excellent services and goods aimed at responding to the citizens’ needs equally, regardless of religion and political affiliation, race, gender, origin, age, etc. This glory works of delivering the extraordinary services to the citizens equally occur because liberal political actors have accepted all the principles of democracy and applied them to the systems of their respective countries’ institutions. Illiberal democratic political actors are fearful to apply all the principles of democracy in the systems of their respective countries’ institutions. Refusing to accept all the principles of democracy should be recognized as one among other reasons why illiberal political actors have more often initiated the civil wars and likewise fail to provide the excellent services to their citizens equally. Hence, a liberal democratic form of government shall be a hope to the citizens of the illiberal democratic countries for attaining the peaceful countries and peaceful political actors. To understand how a liberal democratic form of g...

Ali Monazzami Ghassemlou.s ideas of democracy for Iran as a multi-nation country

Until today, the relationship between the Persians and other nations in Iran has been very unbalanced, Independent of which governance form the country has had. The Kurds in Iran have fought for self-governance right many years. Now they believe they can realize this goal by democratizing Iran, while they believe that all Kurds are one nation. The problem statement for this task have been: What did democracy mean for Ghassemlou in theory and practice, and how Ghassemlou's ideas about democracy can help us to democratize Iran? The main finding in this thesis is that Iran is a multi-national and multi-religious country ruled by an Islamic theocratic system, that Persians have great influence over it, and that consequently - in order to democratize Iran, the country first needs to remove this theocratic system, then can create a system that will help people to practice democracy. Such a system should bring up democratic personalities, by training in practising democracy, in which people will form organizations, have freedom of speech, tolerate differences, and grants people a great degree of self-governance trough a decentralized political system.

Edward Aspinall, Ward Berenschot Democracy for Sale. Elections, Clientelism, and the State in Indonesia

Democracy for Sale is an on-the-ground account of Indonesian democracy, analyzing its election campaigns and behind-the-scenes machinations. Edward Aspinall and Ward Berenschot assess the informal networks and political strategies that shape access to power and privilege in the messy political environment of contemporary Indonesia. In post-Suharto Indonesian politics the exchange of patronage for political support is commonplace. Clientelism, argue the authors, saturates the political system, and in Democracy for Sale they reveal the everyday practices of vote buying, influence peddling, manipulating government programs, and skimming money from government projects. In doing so, Aspinall and Berenschot advance three major arguments. The first argument points toward the role of religion, kinship, and other identities in Indonesian clientelism. The second explains how and why Indonesia's distinctive system of free-wheeling clientelism came into being. And the third argument addresses variation in the patterns and intensity of clientelism. Through these arguments and with comparative leverage from political practices in India and Argentina, Democracy for Sale provides compelling evidence of the importance of informal networks and relationships rather than formal parties and institutions in contemporary Indonesia.

Hope for American democracy in an era of deep divisions In Healing the Heart of Democracy, Parker J. Palmer quickens our instinct to seek the common good and gives us the tools to do it. This timely, courageous and practical work—intensely personal as well as political—is not about them, «those people» in Washington D.C., or in our state capitals, on whom we blame our political problems. It's about us, «We the People,» and what we can do in everyday settings like families, neighborhoods, classrooms, congregations and workplaces to resist divide-and-conquer politics and restore a government «of the people, by the people, for the people.» In the same compelling, inspiring prose that has made him a bestselling author, Palmer explores five «habits of the heart» that can help us restore democracy's foundations as we nurture them in ourselves and each other: An understanding that we are all in this together An appreciation of the value of «otherness» An ability to hold tension in life-giving ways A sense of personal voice and agency A capacity to create community Healing the Heart of Democracy is an eloquent and empowering call for «We the People» to reclaim our democracy. The online journal Democracy & Education called it «one of the most important books of the early 21st Century.» And Publishers Weekly, in a Starred Review, said «This beautifully written book deserves a wide audience that will benefit from discussing it.»

Abdelkrim Dekhakhena The New Project for the Middle East. From US Democracy Promotion to ISIL Destruction

Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Near East, Near Orient, , course: American Studies, language: English, abstract: The supercilious idea of the United States that, by toppling Saddam Hussein, can rapidly democratize Iraq and unleash a democratic tsunami in the Middle East, has metamorphosed into an apocalypse that swept the core nations of the region. Chaos and destruction became the "manifest destiny" of these peoples and democracy became a dangerous fantasy. The United States' record of building democracy after invading other countries is mixed at best and the Bush administration's commitment to state-building efforts in Iraq is doubtful. The United States have failed at developing democracy in the Middle East - which has led to increased instability and anarchy - because U.S. foreign policy has misunderstood the formula for building democracy in the region. The United States is just the latest Western nation to fail in the Middle East. The repercussions of a miscalculated intervention in Iraq were likely to complicate the spread of democracy in the Middle East rather than to promote it. Instead of developing democratic governments in the region the US intervention paved the way for the emergence of more oppressive radical groups that hijacked the reins of power from the legitimate governments and anguished peoples' lives through acts of terror and bullying. The new paradox that Bush's neoc...

"Democracy in Nigeria - Thoughts and Selected Commentaries" consists of a series of essays which address a variety of issues bordering on good governance and the stability of the Nigerian state. While the author is optimistic about the future of his nation and proposes measures that can drive its democracy forward, he is unhappy that corruption, in particular, has impeded progress in an otherwise vibrant nation. He believes that proper education and a realistic federal arrangement provide the solution to religious intolerance and all the ills that are associated with it, while a more proactive population can actually tame the monster of corruption if they are genuinely worried that corruption has been responsible for their individual and collective plights.

Marie Lechler An Econometrical Analysis of the Interdependencies Between the Demographic Transition and Democracy

This paper investigates the effect of an exogenous demographic transition on democracy. As possible channels through which this influence makes an impact, education and per capita income and, to a lesser degree, urbanization were identified. These interdependencies were tested using pooled ordinary least squares as well as fixed effects models on the basis of panel data. In conclusion, the demographic transition affects democracy through the aforementioned channels primarily in poor countries that have experienced their demographic transition and subsequent democratization in the second half of the 20th century or later.

During World War I, President Masaryk of Czechoslovakia created a policy of enlightened democracy that caught the attention of Europe and America. He believed that tyranny cannot permanently conquer and that truth will ultimately prevail. He saw clearly, however, that democracy must create for itself a spiritual discipline, that it must solve the problems of living, that it must present a unified outlook on existence.Originally published in 1941.A UNC Press Enduring Edition -- UNC Press Enduring Editions use the latest in digital technology to make available again books from our distinguished backlist that were previously out of print.
