Increasingly grassroots organizations are trying to convince and coach people to simplify their consumption and regain the riches of a decluttered life that is in harmony with Earths carrying capacity. In this research 40 (!) downshifting promotion initiatives are studied in the Netherlands. The main focus is on the viability of these initiatives to contribute to or influence current societal consumption practices in a direction of less consumption. This work demonstrates that there is a rich diversity of initiatives promoting downshifting in creative ways, providing inspiration and tools for those people interested in lowering their consumption levels. The positive message provided by these initiatives reflects a departure in environmental organizations from ‘doom scenario’s and guilt triggering, towards practical and enabling strategies.

Astrid Kander, Paolo Malanima, Paul Warde Power to the People. Energy in Europe over the Last Five Centuries

3752 руб.
Power to the People examines the varied but interconnected relationships between energy consumption and economic development in Europe over the last five centuries. It describes how the traditional energy economy of medieval and early modern Europe was marked by stable or falling per capita energy consumption, and how the First Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century--fueled by coal and steam engines--redrew the economic, social, and geopolitical map of Europe and the world. The Second Industrial Revolution continued this energy expansion and social transformation through the use of oil and electricity, but after 1970 Europe entered a new stage in which energy consumption has stabilized. This book challenges the view that the outsourcing of heavy industry overseas is the cause, arguing that a Third Industrial Revolution driven by new information and communication technologies has played a major stabilizing role. Power to the People offers new perspectives on the challenges posed today by climate change and peak oil, demonstrating that although the path of modern economic development has vastly increased our energy use, it has not been a story of ever-rising and continuous consumption. The book sheds light on the often lengthy and complex changes needed for new energy systems to emerge, the role of energy resources in economic growth, and the importance of energy efficiency in promoting growth and reducing future energy demand.

Food is the basic necessity for human survival and evolution. A region with different food species and their abundant growth and availability demonstrate better consumption pattern of different food items. The purpose of this study has been to identify food varieties and energy consumption ratio among people with low and high income levels among thirty randomly selected Bengali Hindu families of Kolkata, east India. In addition the study also investigated the influence of income on the availability and abundance of different food items and their corresponding amounts. The survey indicated that people from low income groups demonstrated lack of key nutrients in their regular diets with symptoms of deficiency diseases. Income has a direct effect on the consumption rate of foods. Low income and illiteracy were found as the two main factors of difference between the two economic classes. The study further highlights that higher income was associated with better consumption of nutritious food. The current volume will be useful for those involved in research and development in food, food preferences and food habits, nutrition sciences, ethnicity, socio-economic and cultural relations.

The search for alternative development agents, global orientation towards neo-liberal policies and the shift in development approaches from modernization to social and human development boiled down to rapid proliferation of Local NGOs(LNGO) in the Global-South. The entry of LNGOs shifted the role of International NGOs (INGO) from direct implementers to partners whose major responsibility was to develop the capacity of the LNGOs. After more than two decades of INGO-NGO partnerships pursuing capacity building and sustainable development, whether or not greater capacity is attained by LNGOs and whether or not greater development effectiveness and sustainability are achieved is debatable. This book considers these issues and analyses the proximity of reality with the rhetoric through a case study of NGOs in Nepal. This book should help to inform the NGO partnership debate further and should be useful particularly to NGO workers, professionals, academicians and anyone who is interested in NGO and development sector.

'Consumption, Cities and States' examines the fascinating intersection of consumption, citizenship and the state in a cross-section of global cities in Asia and the West. It focuses on a number of theoretical and empirical analyses: developing and amplifying the intersection of consumption, citizenship and the state in late modernity in relation to a range of cities; examining the concept of the global city as an 'aspirational' category for cities in Asia and the West; and considering case studies which highlight the intersection of consumption and the state. As Ann Brooks and Lionel Wee demonstrate, the interface between citizen status and consumer activity proves a crucial point of analysis in the light of the neoliberal assertion that individuals and institutions perform at their best within a free market economy.

The economic development of a nation is directly dependent on the per capita energy consumption. In developing countries like India, the energy consumption is increasing with increase in population and industrialization. The crude oil consumption constitutes the largest share of total energy consumption in India. As an estimate, more than 80% of petroleum product is imported from oil producing countries putting heavy pressure of foreign exchange looking at the huge consumption of petroleum diesel in transportation, industry, commercial sector and others. There is a need to search for alternative to diesel. In India, about 60 Mha of waste land and road/ rail network track side is available that can be utilized for growing the resources for non-edible oil production which can further be converted into biodiesel, used as diesel fuel substitute. Pongamia is a drought-resistant perennial, growing well in marginal/poor soil. Pongamia, the wonder plant produces seeds with an oil content of 30%. The oil can be combusted as fuel without being refined. It burns with clear smoke-free flame, tested successfully as a fuel for simple diesel engine.

This book is a result of a series of regional discussions by experts and practitioners involved in the urban and planning of their countries. It highlights urbanization issues that have implications for regional - including ASEAN - cooperation, and provides practical recommendations for policymakers. It is a first step towards assisting governments in the region to take advantage of existing collaborative partnerships to address the urban transformation that Southeast Asia is experiencing today.

This research paper explores the subject of collaborative consumption with focus on Canadian and German consumers. It provides an overview of collaborative consumption in the U.S., Canada, and Germany. Advantages and disadvantages are compared. The author then focuses on the apparel market in the respective countries. Different types of collaborative apparel consumption and clothing swap business models are discussed. The researcher draws up the hypothesis that although collaborative clothing consumption seems to be dependent on population density, consumers in urban and rural areas are equally interested in changing their shopping behavior. This hypothesis is proven with a survey that was conducted in Canada and Germany. A clothing swap experiment in Kelowna, B.C. explored the potential success of apparel swap businesses in Western Canada. It was a successful event relative to other Canadian swap events in major metropolitan areas, even though the critical mass of apparel items that would have satisfied every attendee could not be generated. The conclusion of this research: in regards to numbers of items sold, resold, or exchanged, this trend will presumably not surpass traditional ways of apparel consumption anytime soon. However, the popularity of collaborative apparel consumption is increasing and consumers in rural as well as urban areas are interested in participating.

Balanced regional development aims at economic development of a region along with creation of gainful employment. As economic development takes place, a shift in structure of the economy and employment is experienced resulting into restructuring of employment generation capacities of the economic sectors. However, it is observed that although the sectoral approach of planning does assist in the development of the particular sectors, it does not necessarily lead to the balanced regional development. Therefore this book pertains to the assessment of the influence of various sectors of the economy for balanced development of a region in India. The authors have made efforts to develop appropriate policy interventions for balanced regional development through analysis of employment generation capacity of various sectors of economy vis a vis the demand for employment in the region. System concept and system dynamics modeling was followed for the development of simulated scenarios for policy analyses. The authors believed that the integrated sectoral planning approach of development presented here through application of systems concept could bring about balanced regional development.

The innovation capacity-building can contribute to improve the integration of developing countries in the world economy. The economic development has been a much discussed subject of the period after the Second World War until the 1990s. After the implementation of a global regulation system for trade and capital flows in the 1990s, the development economics has almost disappeared in favor of different theories on globalization, on finance and on international trade. The purpose of this book is to show that the innovation capacity building in developing countries is necessary to improve their weight in the world economy and to facilitate their economic ties with northern countries. However, there are important difficulties due to the lack of proactive economic policies. Our aim is to contribute to the revival of the development economics. The issue of improving the well-being of the world population as a whole is highly topical. However, studies neglect the need to give economic, financial, technological and political resources to developing countries to promote their own development. One of the most important means is to strengthen their innovation capabilities that allow them to better integrate into the world economy.

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Psychologie - Biologische Psychologie, Note: 1,0, Universität Koblenz-Landau, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Consumption of Cannabis is discussed as an ethological factor in the development of schizophrenic spectrum disorders. There is evidence that cannabis causes cognitive deficits, which can typically be found in schizophrenic patients or vulnerable individuals. An often disturbed cognitive process in schizophrenia is the early-information-processing. One of its components is the gating of sensory input. The gating-function can be measured with the P50-Gating paradigm evoked by acoustic stimuli using EEG. The P50-Gating is known to be disturbed in many patients with schizophrenic spectrum disorders. Little is known, if the P50-Gating is disturbed in Cannabis-users, even after a while of abstinence from the drug. Another field of interest in this work is the clinical correlates of the P50 and its influence on higher cognitive functions and behaviour. In summary, his thesis wants to elucidate the epidemiological evidence between Cannabis-consumption and schizophrenic spectrum disorders. Results: We could not find a persistent deficit of the P50-Gating in abstinent Cannabis-users compared to healthy controls. Nevertheless, we could find different correlations between variables of Cannabis consumption patterns and the P50-Gating. Consumption of Nicotine could be found as an important confounder in the study design. As predicted, P50-G...

This book shares insights on the landscape of administration and enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights in Ethiopia. It argues the benefits of IP regime have to be envisioned with institutional capacity. This book shares the notions of New Institutional Economics (NIE) to define institutional capacity. Quality of IP laws should be seen as crucial element of institutional capacity. IP administration and enforcement in developing countries as in the case of Ethiopia may face conundrums. This, however, cannot hide the prospect of the IP regime if the country has liberalized trade, good inflow of FDI and promising technological capability. The Status of Ethiopia in the aforementioned criterion is addressed. A critical assessment is made on the development of IP rights, current IP rights administration and enforcement practices in Ethiopia to identify the challenges and prospects. Relevant policy considerations have been drawn from the analysis. This book is aimed to serve as a reference to IP researchers worldwide who are interested in having in-depth understanding how IP fits in the development aspiration and machinery of developing countries like Ethiopia.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 16,2 (French Grading), , course: European Master in Business Studies, language: English, abstract: Changes in consumption patterns have always taken place. Never in the history, however, was the impact of humans on their surrounding environment that significant. The base of this impact is industrialization and the post World War II economic boom in the triad. The attitude towards buying changed dramatically with the start of hyper-consumption and the introduction of the credit system. Idealizing haves and admiring ownership impacted people and nations around the globe. The invention of the Internet gives rise to a completely new form of media. It allows the current and new generations to thrive on the developments. The Internet offers new marketplaces and acts as a medium to create new communities. The most recent developments indicate a revival of old virtues and arts of trading. Collaborative consumption is a developing and increasingly observable trend which includes many forms of sharing and trading and defines access as superior to ownership. This trend appears to be manifold and covers numerous traditional and new industries (Botsman, 2010).The purpose of the thesis is to investigate if this trend can be considered as a phase, a niche, or if it can become a movement that will potentially redefine the way we do business. Will collaborative consumption develop into the new sta...

The book is premised on the assertion that institutions and processes of governance are fundamental to Africa’s transformation in the twenty-first century. After decades of political independence and myriads of development experimentations in most of Africa, there are still 388 million people in extreme poverty and approximately 239 million chronically undernourished in the continent. The book provides a critical overview of the various approaches to development and the many fads of public sector reform in the developing world. The discussion also lays out an analytical framework drawn extensively from the literature on administrative and institutional capacity to advance what the authors refer to as strategic development management. In particular, the discussion proposes models of innovative participatory governance for leveraging developing countries’ natural and human resource potentials for economic and social development. Using Sierra Leone, a post-confclit country, as an illustrative case study, the book examines the nature, challenges, and prospects of the institutions and processes of development policy governance in developing countries.

“The most fundamental difference between ‘developing’ and ‘developed’ societies is technology, in a broad yet specific sense”; so states the author of this important study, Liberation and Technology: Development possibilities in pursuing technological autonomy. The ways in which technology is developed, institutionalized, animated and celebrated, form the core of ‘development’ (human, economic, environmental, etc.) and ultimately civilization itself. But ‘techno-spheres’ are not only technical. They are also social, political, and ideological. For societies and countries that have long been kept from realizing their own prosperity and dignity, development is also liberation. The main treatise of this book is that each developing society ought to seek to achieve technological autonomy in its quest for positive transformations and prosperity for its people. Technological autonomy is about attaining a high level of self-determination in planning and managing technological affairs. Attaining endogenous capacity to guide and execute decisions on production and innovation; creating and transferring key technological products and services; steering relevant foreign and local investment as well as trade; setting own priorities of development free from external manipulation; are goals that must be central to such planning efforts. With evidence and argument, and in plain language, this book suggests a novel way of thinking about development, through envisioning and building better tech...

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: 75.00, University of Geneva, course: Master of Business Administration, language: English, abstract: This project presented an investigation into the impact of microfinance banks (MFBs) on the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Abuja between the periods of (2005-2017). To achieve this, a comprehensive analysis was undertaken regarding the development of Microfinance as an economic tool, and the relevance of SMEs to the achievement of widespread economic empowerment and the alleviation of poverty in Nigeria. Aside from conventional banking services such as the acceptance of deposits and provision of credit, findings from primary research disclosed that the provision of capacity building and other supportive services were designated by the CBN as necessary for adequate development of SMEs. However information on the existence of some of these service or information regarding the measures of success experienced by SMEs in terms of growth through access to these services were difficult to ascertain. Therefore, a secondary research was undertaken on twenty-one (21) MFBs and forty-eight (48) SMEs all based in FCT Abuja, Nigeria with the aim of investigating the factors surrounding the rendering of capacity building and other core microfinance services as prescribed by the CBN. Findings revealed that only a fraction of identifiable CBN-described capacity building service...
