Feminist critics have long considered language a primary vehicle for the transmission of sexist values in a society. This much-needed sociolinguistic critique examines the representation of women in traditional Japanese language and society. Derogatory and highly-sexualized terms are placed in historical context, and the progress of nonsexist language reform is reviewed. Central to this work are the individual voices of Japanese women who took part in a survey, expressing their candid thoughts and concerns regarding biased gender representations. In their own words, they give voice to the reality of being female within the constraints of a traditional--and sometimes misogynistic--language.

The study of African language pedagogy and use in the Diaspora was initiated in the 1960s as African countries attained independence from colonial powers. In the continent, the enthusiasm for the use of indigenous languages and scholarship has remained relatively moderate as scholars are conflicted in their loyalty to imperial languages. The attitude towards the use of African languages by African leaders has also hampered scholars' efforts to create and sustain the needed visibility for African languages around the world. Needless to say, the study of African languages is not only critical to the study of language theories but also important in changing Africa's overwhelming reliance on European languages to communicate with each other. The reliance has not only affected the politics of the continent but also its economic wellbeing. An analysis of the enormous developmental challenges facing the African continent will reveal that many of the economic, social, political and cultural challenges have major language components. It can actually be said that the challenges of development in Africa are either outright language challenges or are language- based. More significantly, at the social level in many parts of the continent, African languages are now perceived as inadequate means of communication. Language Pedagogy and Language Use in Africa discusses the importance of teaching and using of African languages in the African continent and beyond and provides illustrati...

Since the beginning of times music has played an essential role in human society and language development. Music and song comprise a significant part in the development of human speech and language learning processes. This book aims to study the effectiveness of music and songs of The Beatles in teaching English as a foreign language. The book analyzes several language acquisition hypotheses and theories, along with discussing different teaching methodologies that incorporate music and song as a major teaching component in the foreign language acquisition. Likewise, it provides worksheets of possible activities that make use of The Beatles' songs. Special focus is on the psychological part of language learning and the role of interaction between music and the human brain in terms of occurrence of the din and involuntary mental rehearsal, which suggest that songs are an effective aid to memorization. The analysis should draw attention to this new and exciting way of foreign language learning, and should be especially useful to professionals in the fields of linguistics and language teaching methodology, as well as foreign language learners.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, , course: Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Special Degree in English Studies, language: English, abstract: The present thesis is an attempt to recognize the sociolinguistic prestige of Received Pronunciation (RP) in contemporary Sri Lankan society, using attitudes, perceptions, and practices of habitual English users in Sri Lanka. Since this study approaches RP from a number of dimensions that are vital in a sociolinguistic study of an accent, this plurality of dimension is reflected in its methodology. The research methods are (a) an attitudinal survey; (b) a series of semi-structured interviews; (c) Observation of participants' behaviour during interviews; and observation of RP used by Sri Lankans.RP's prestige has not changed radically even after 64 years of independence from colonial rule, despite the burgeoning discussion on the suitability of the home-grown standard of English at academic and policy levels. However, Sri Lankan English has surpassed RP as the descriptive standard ,that is, the standard sanctioned by actual use despite RP's continuous role as the prescriptive and the imagined standard, which is accorded more prestige. The residual sociolinguistic prestige of RP is initially examined as a matter of language ideologies surrounding the English language as well as language in general. Subsequently, the discussion focuses on the British-orientation of ...

Also, the specific challenges that arise regarding the training of employees will be explained in detail, as well as those in establishing the use of English in the enterprise. Furthermore, this thesis intends to give insight on the definition of the term "Lingua Franca" in former times as well as its modern usage. To enhance the understandability of why it is English that is chosen as the universal language, the history of the language is briefly described. Finally, from the entirety of investigations, conclusions on the choice of English as company language shall be drawn, and an outlook on the possible future of English as the World Language shall be given.

Document from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, University of Marburg, language: English, abstract: This study investigates the tense and aspect systems in use in Irish English, which is also called Hiberno-English. Against the background of previous research, corpus material mainly consisting of Dublin English is discussed. The corpus consists of close to a quarter of a million words, collected manually mainly from written text, with some additional examples from participant observation. In addition to investigating the tense and aspect forms in use, possibilities for the geneses of the categories are discussed, and the potential influence from Early Modern English and Late Modern English is assessed, as well as the potential input from the Irish language. It is suggested that the tense system corresponds to that of Standard British English, whereas the aspectual system differs to varying degrees in perfect, progressive and habitual marking. It is further argued that the majority of the specially used aspectual categories in Hiberno-English could have been influenced in their development by influence from both the Irish language - i.e. Gaelic, and by influence from earlier British English language structures which were in use during the formative stages of the variety. This is not the case for the distinctive Hiberno-English after-perfect, however, which is entirely modeled on a corresponding Irish language structure.

The effect of age on language use provides an interesting research area inside sociolinguistics. An average person can differentiate for example children's language from adolescents' language, but s/he is not aware of the causes of this difference and sociolinguistic variation. Of course, language use is affected by other numerous factors, like social class, occupation, gender. Teenagers' talk involves a lot of slang words which emphasise the rebellion against childhood and adulthood. Later, in adulthood standard English comes into prominence. Slang is the main feature at this age. Adults generally use standard language but their occupations and jobs can affect their language use. Based on this evidence I was curious to see whether youngsters use more slang words than older people. I have examined four television programmes, and the result has been surprising. My research sought the following research questions:1.Does the speech of the youth on television contain more slang words that of the adults' 2. Is the difference in the number of slang words used by youngsters and adults considerable' The last chapter, the pedagogical section.

Contemporary findings (Pléh, 2010) have also showed that LA is one of the most important processes in our life, determining the whole procedure of language learning, not only in the case of second language, but also in the case of our mother tongue. Moreover, the whole process includes memorizing things, conceptualization, connecting cognitive information and eventual accuracy in the use of language. Interestingly enough, contemporary findings have also proved (Deb K. Roy et al., 2002) that first language acquisition begins even before the birth of the child, which means that the adaptation to the new circumstances and verbalcommunication starts in the mother's uterus. These new researches and our devotion to medical disciplines1 have made us compose an essay on the biological factors of Second Language Acquisition. No doubt, biological and neurobiological factors are very severely important parts of LA procedures, however, they are not really put into the focus of linguistic experts. The reason for this might be traced in several things...

Now a day the soil fertility of high land areas, where most of the agricultural activities have been done at the escarpments of the landscape, has been decreased. These in turn decrease the productivity of land because of the removal of soil and nutrient by erosion. Therefore the use of fertilizer has increased to compensate the removed nutrients through erosion. The change in land use is also another factor to increase or decrease the fertility of the land. The application of the same fertilizer rate at each landscape position lead us wastage or inefficient. This book, therefore, provides the variability of soil chemical fertility among different land use and landscape position, as well as soil deterioration indices. The analysis help some light on this variability, and especially useful to professionals like researchers, agriculture experts and instructors etc working in areas of soil fertility and decision makers who may use fertilizer in the high land areas or any else.

The analysis is based on empirical data gathered in a small-scale empirical study with the participation of Hungarian learners of English of different ages, levels of English and educational background. The results reveal that native speaker varieties of English are favoured over non-native varieties by learners when they choose a target variety of the language. Moreover, several factors influence this choice of target variety, including knowledge of the varieties of English, personal influence, the situations in which learners of English use the language outside the classroom, learners' aims concerning the use of English in their future, native and non-native interlocutors learners use the language with and certain language-related attitudes. The participants were also found to reject the norms of non-native varieties of English and English as a Lingua Franca as possible alternatives to the standards of the native varieties.

What is linguistic meaning? What do people precisely do in uttering sentences? What are the principles involved in linguistic interpretation? How is it possible that linguistic signs, such as oral sounds or squiggles on a piece of paper, refer to things in the world? This book presents the attempts by philosophers in the 20th century to understand the workings of language, and address questions such as these.Presenting an accessible, balanced introduction to the philosophy of language as it has evolved in analytical philosophy during the 20th century, this textbooks offers equal attention to both of the main divisions within the field of philosophical semantics -truth-conditional theory and speech act theory - and shows how these theoretical approaches may be construed as complementary abstractions from a prior, undifferentiated understanding of meaning as defined by use. Meaning, Use and Truth offers students of philosophy of language, and those in related fields such as logic and linguistics, a comprehensive introduction to the field, and explores why philosophy of language in the 20th century could be viewed as providing the key to the solution if the classical problems of philosophy. Though such aids are greatly helpful in L2 teaching and continually expanding their scope with the availability and development of technology, their use in the EFL class especially at the tertiary level in Bangladesh is still limited. This study was then designed to address varied issues related to the use of audio aids in the EFL class at the tertiary level in Bangladesh. It concludes that the use of audio aids in the EFL class is a plus, but the lack of teacher training, audio equipment and material and administrative support seriously restricts it. Hence, the researchers recommend proper teacher training, adequate audio equipment and material, necessary administrative support, and a well equipped language lab to ensure the optimal use of audio aids, and thus guarantee the learner's maximum benefit.

IntroductionIn September 2010 a huge debate started in Britain after the famous actress Emma Thompson had given an interview for the BBC during which she complained heavily about the language of teenagers. "I went to give a talk at my old school and the girls were all doing their 'likes' and 'innit' and 'it ain'ts', which drives me insane"1, she said indignantly. Her statement probably mirrors what the majority of adults think of the language used by teenagers today. "Parents and teachers often have a critical and negative attitude towards adolescent language, judging it as 'sloppy' and attempting to correct vernacular features such as local accents, slang words, discourse particles or code-mixing." (Androutsopoulos 2005: 1501) This debate about the appropriateness or inappropriateness of vernacular language use traces back to the very roots of modern sociolinguistics. The American linguist William Labov was the first who conducted several quantitative studies concerning language variation in the 1960s (cf. Becker & Bieswanger 2006: 193). He tried to find out how the social background of speakers influences their language use, and why people decide to use either st...

First of all, the African-Americans had to change their self-conception and their self-perception to achieve a special position in society as an individual. Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Erfurt (Philosophische Fakultät - Fachbereich Anglistik), course: Intercultural Communications, language: English, abstract: "Idioms, the colourful side of languages, are one of the symbols used while we are communicating our thoughts and feelings. They are used to give life and richness to the language by taking the existing words, combining them in a new sense, and creating new meanings, just like a work of art." (LEN-NON, 1998, cited in BULUT; ÇELIK-YAZICI, 2004: 105)This combination of existing words "like a work of art" represents a huge challenge for non-native speakers they have to cope with in their language learning process. In the context of intercultural communication, non-native and native speakers interact with each other and often make use of idioms and other fixed expressions as "the colourful side of languages", because they are used to it from their usual communication in their first languages. However, these fixed expressions constitute a special part of the language use due to particular characteristics, which will be explored further in this term paper. Consequently, communication between non-native and native speakers does not always runs smoothly when phraseological language comes into play. Amongst others, the cultural boundedness as well as native-like creative exploitations of the fixed expressions re...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Essen, language: English, abstract: The topic of age and employment is increasingly becoming relevant due to discussions regarding the future of the working society in Germany as well as against the background of demographic changes. These emerging demographic trends, characterized by a declining birth rate, a greater share of older people and an increasing life expectancy, lead to a future lack of younger employees, growing age diversity within the company as well as to older customers and employees. In order to maintain and improve their position in an increasingly competitive market, companies will need to bring instrategies and competencies that allow them to equally develop, remain and use the potentials of all age groups in the company.Up to now, companies have not sufficiently recognized and used the economic potential that in particular their older employees can contribute to the working processes. On the contrary, the up to now existing legal simplification of early retirement together with false prejudices about the achievement potential connected with age discrimination have led to the dismissal of especially older employees in cases of necessary restructuring measures connected with staff reduction. The fact that the older employees' potentials in combination with the potentials of the younger employees in the sense of a ...

Making sense of the world around us is a process involving both semiotic and material mediation--the use of signs and sign systems (preeminently language) and various kinds of tools (technics). As we use them, we experience them subjectively as extensions of our bodily selves and objectively as instruments for accessing the world with which we interact. Emphasizing this bipolar nature of language and technics, understood as intertwined "forms of sense," Robert Innis studies the multiple ways in which they are rooted in and transform human perceptual structures in both their individual and social dimensions. The book foregrounds and is organized around the notion of "semiotic embodiment." Language and technics are viewed as "probes" upon which we rely, in which we are embodied, and that themselves embody and structure our primary modes of encountering the world. While making an important substantive contribution to present debates about the "biasing" of perception by language and technics, Innis also seeks to provide a methodological model of how complementary analytical resources from American pragmatist and various European traditions can be deployed fruitfully in the pursuit of new insights into the phenomenon of meaning-making.

The language of the Bible has no inconsiderable influence in forming and preserving our national language. On this account, the language of the common version ought to be correct in grammatical construction, and in the use of appropriate words. This is the more important, as men who are accustomed to read the Bible with veneration, are apt to contract a predilection for its phraseology, and thus to become attached to phrases which are quaint or obsolete. This may be a real misfortune; for the use of words and phrases, when they have ceased to be part of the living language, and appear odd or singular, impairs the purity of the language, and is apt to create a disrelish for it in those who have not, by long practice, contracted a like predilection. It may require some effort to subdue this predilection;but it may be done, and for the sake of the rising generation, it is desirable. The language of the scriptures ought to be pure, chaste, simple, and perspicuous, free from any words or phrases which may excite observation by their singularity; and neither debased by vulgarisms, nor tricked out with the ornaments of affected elegance.Noah Webster, 1833Noah Webster, Jr. (October 16, 1758--May 28, 1843) was an American lexicographer, textbook pioneer, English-language spelling reformer, political writer, editor, and prolific author.

An in-depth biography of the Latin language from its very beginnings to the present day from the widely acclaimed author of ‘Empires of the Word’.The Latin language has been a constant in the cultural history of the West for over two millennia. It has shaped the way we think of ourselves and of our (central) place in the world. It has formed and united us as Europeans, has been the foundation of our education for centuries and defined the way in which we express our thoughts, our faith and our knowledge of the workings of the world. And yet, Latin began life as the cumbersome dialect of a small southern Italian city-state.Its active use lasted three times as long as Rome's Empire and its use echoes on in the law codes of half the world, in terminologies of biology and medicine, and until forty years ago in the litany of the Catholic Church, the most populous form of Christianity. In ‘Ad Infinitum’, Nicholas Ostler examines the reasons why Latin made such a long-lasting impact on language, and how it managed to stay alive for two millennia despite the cultural superiority of Greek. He will look at how Latin's sturdy roots remained untouched while empires rose and fell, the influence of religion, war and the ways it has progressed through medieval times right up until the present day.

The Ideological Leanings of Contemporary Nigerian Female Playwrights attempts an investigation into the plays of Nigerian women, with specific interest in ADAUGO and NNEORA: AN AFRICAN DOLL'S HOUSE by Osita Ezenwanebe and Tracie Utoh-Ezeajugh respectively, in order to unearth the ideologies in these plays. This was achieved through a critical analysis of the two plays as primary data while referencing the literary contributions of other critics and writers. The unique techniques of the playwrights' dramaturgy help to position the plays in proper perspective as feminist narratives, with sociological undertones. At the end of the book, it is discovered that women do not yet have complete economic and social freedom, a condition which stifles their growth and contribution to society. Many Nigerian societies still insist on social role differentiation which deprives women from maximizing their potentialities and contribution to society. Women have unique strengths and virtues which enable them sustain the family and society in times of uncertainties. The book concludes that the predominant ideology in ADAUGO is Womanism, while NNEORA is a blend of Motherism and Nego-feminism.

The research question of this paper is: To what extent is the representation of women and their status in the fictional societies determined by gender relations in the context of the distribution of power? To explore this question the historical context in which s/he wrote the novel is also assumed to be important. The approach applied to this thesis is based on gender and literary studies. This book contains an analysis of the structure and use of ideophones - sound-symbolic words evoking sensory imagery - in Katuena (Tunayana), a moribund Amerindian language with only a few remaining speakers. The Katuena language has a large number of ideophones, and these are used both in story-telling and in daily conversation. The first part of this study provides an introduction to the Katuena people, their history and their language, as well as an overview of the literature on ideophones. The second part uses a corpus of the language and interviews with speakers to provide a comprehensive analysis of the phonological and morphological structures of Katuena ideophones, as well as their syntactic characteristics. This is followed up by an analysis of the meanings and uses of ideophones, including the ways in which iconicity contributes to their meanings, and the gestures which frequently accompany these sound-symbolic words. There are very few speakers of Katuena (Tunayana) left, and this language will soon disappear completely. This book and the research contained within it are a small step towards the full documentation of Katuena language and culture.
