Regarding a strategy of expressing foreign genes in plants, two diverged RMV-based expression vectors containing a green fluorescent protein were cloned into the binary vector pPZP200 for subsequent agroinfiltration work. An infectious full-length clone of RMV and three RMV-based mutants already existed. They vary depending on which of the two putative ORFs is inactivated. An additional mutation site of one of these mutation constructs was discovered and reverse mutated. After the inoculation of the constructs on N. benthamiana and N. tabacum, the analysis revealed distinct effects in virus accumulation and symptom characteristics of the three mutation constructs. These results differ from the ones of the wild type clone. Accordingly, all three mutants show both lower virus accumulation levels and lesser symptom characteristics. Further, the results from N. benthamiana indicate an ability to reverse mutate the -4K virus. In addition to the description and the analysis of these results, the potential role of the two putative ORFs will be discussed and an outlook on further investigations will be given.

African History: A Very Short Introduction

This Very Short Introduction looks at Africa's past and reflects on the changing ways it has been imagined and represented, both in Africa and beyond. The author illustrates important aspects of Africa's history with a range of fascinating historical examples, drawn from over 5 millennia across this vast continent. The multitude of topics that the reader will learn about in this succinct work include the unity and diversity of African cultures, slavery, religion, colonial conquest, the diaspora, and the importance of history in understanding contemporary Africa. The book examines questions such as: Who invented the idea of "Africa"? How is African history pieced together, given such a lack of documentary evidence? How did Africa interact with the world 1000 years ago? Africa has been known as "the cradle of mankind", and its recoverable history stretches back to the Pharaohs. But the idea of studying African history is itself new, and the authors show why it is still contested and controversial. This VSI, the first concise work of its kind, will prove essential reading for anyone interested in the African continent and the diversity of human history. Формат издания: 11 см х 17,5 см.

Who is an African.. Identity, Citizenship and the Making of the Africa-Nation

Who is an African? At face value, the answer seems obvious. Surely, everyone knows who the African is, it would seem. But the answer becomes less obvious once other probing qualifiers are added to the question. How is the African identity constructed in the face of the mosaic of identities that people of African ancestry living within and beyond the continent bear? Do all categorised as Africans or as having an African pedigree perceive themselves as Africans? Are all who perceive themselves as Africans accepted as such? Are there levels of "Africanness", and are some more African than others? How does African identity interface with other levels of identity and citizenship in Africa? And what are the implications of the contentious nature of African identity and citizenship for the projects of pan-Africanism, the making of the Africa-nation, and Africa's development trajectories? Contributors to the volume, including Ali Mazrui, Kwesi Prah, Gamal Nkrumah, Helmi Sharawy and Marcel Kitissou, address these questions and more. They examine the issues of African identity and citizenship, the politics spurned by the co-existence of peoples of different Africanities in the same country, and the prospects of constructing an Africa-Nation in which Africans of all hues are as sentimentally attached to, as say, the Europeans are attached to Europe. Though the projects of pan-Africanism and the making of the Africa-nation have not achieved the desired levels of success, some...

The patriarchal approach to leadership in the African context is indeed an enigma, judging from the unpredictable outcomes and the quest for effective leadership. In many ways, the secularized big-man in the public square is no different from the sacralised great-man of God in the church. The Lord Jesus Christ calls his followers to servant leadership. The secular world has also established the efficacy of the servant leadership approach for cutting-edge leadership. This book looks at the nature of evangelical associations in their diversity and what it takes for leaders to build unity and harmony for effectiveness, especially in the African context.

The aim of this study is to gather the state of research on theoretical approaches, organizational best practice and practical implementation. To rate the current implementation in Germany, companies, especially all 30 DAX-listed companies, were evaluated and Diversity Charter signatures and the appointment of a diversity manager were used as central evaluation criteria. Furthermore, a deductive content analysis examined components of implemented diversity practices. The Diversity Charter was signed by 28 companies and 29 have a person in charge as a diversity manager. This is a slight increase over the previous year, but the number of new signatories in total shows a step backwards. The content analysis shows that almost all DAX 30 companies have established a strategic integration and a focus on themes of gender and cultural diversity were identified. The results are discussed, taking into account theoretical findings, and implications for the business environment are added.

Sugarcane is an important crop plant and has served as a source of sugar for hundreds of years, recently it is used to produce bioethanol, a renewable bio-fuel energy source. Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV) was detected in the late 1990s first in Hawaii as a causal agent of a sugarcane disease (Yellow leaf) which leads to sugarcane yellow leaf syndrome and reduced sugar yield and later in many sugarcane regions of the world. The virus particles were observed in the cytoplasm of phloem companion cells of sugarcane. Viral infection often affects carbon assimilation and metabolism in host plants. Todays analysis revealed that SCYLV belongs to polerovirus which is a member of the luteoviridae family and has a apparently arisen through recombination between a Polerovirus, a Luteovirus and an Enamovirus. It is a +ssRNA-virus whose sequence contains 6 open reading frames.

Emmanuel Y. Lartey Postcolonializing God. An African Practical Theology

Postcolonializing God examines how African Christianity especially as a practical spirituality can be truly a postcolonial reality. The book offers thoughts as to how African Christians and by that token others who were colonial subjects, may practice a spirituality that bears the hallmarks of their authentic cultural heritage, even if that makes them distinctly different from Christians from the colonizing nations. There are themes in both the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Scriptures in which God's activities result in shattering hegemony, overthrowing the powerful, diversifying communities and affirming pluralism. These have by and large been ignored or downplayed in the formation of Christian communities by western and westernized Christians in Africa. The effect of this is that much of the practice of African Christians imitates that of a European Christianity of bygone times. Postcolonializing God charts a different course uplifting these ignored readings of scripture and identifying how they are expressed again by Africans who courageously seek through the practices of mysticism and African culture to portray a God whose actions liberate and diversify human experience.Postcolonializing God seeks to express the human diversity that seems to be the Creator's ongoing desire for the world and thereby to continue to manifest the manifold and diverse nature and wisdom of God. It is only as humans refuse to be created in the image of any other human beings, that the r...

Rafajlovski Goran, Digalovski Mihail INDUCTION MOTORS Dynamics and Vector Control

Vector control is a method for dynamic control of the speed torque and power factor of the induction motor through permanent control of the intensity and the angle of the space vectors of the electromagnetic variables. The basic idea of the Field Oriented Control (FOC) algorithm is decoupling the stator current into flux and torque producing components. Both components can be controlled separately after decoupling. The structure of the motor controller is then as simple as that for a separately excited DC motor. Direct vector FOC control system is based on measurement, acquisition and (or) estimation of the space angle of the rotor's flux. Unlike the control system which is oriented to the space vector of the rotor's flux, on the dynamic model in a d-q coordinate system of IM and PWM of the voltage inverter, thereby using linear control technique and linear controllers, the direct torque control systems (DTC) are based on the space angle of the stator flux, on the dynamic model of the induction motor in a stationary frame of reference and on the space-vector modulation of the inverter. DTC method is based on non-linear control techniques and non-linear controllers.

Plant diversity was studied in the plantations of different species at Wondo Genet. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of overstorey species, age, and density of the different plantations on the understorey plant diversity. The plantations species were of Cupressus lusitanica, Eucalyptus grandis, Grevillea robusta and Juniperus excelsa. The age of the stands of the different species ranged between 6 and 23 years. A total of 72 plots, having 20 m x 20 m area were studied under the plantations. A total of 45 understorey plant species were recorded. There was a significant difference among the plantation stands with regards to understory plant density, diversity and number of species. The diversity and number of understory plant species were positively related with age of the plantation stands while understorey plant density was inversely related with overstory plant density and crown cover. The overstorey plantation appeared to affect the abundance of understorey plant species more than the species richness. Canopy cover was significantly associated with understorey plant density under all the plantation stands than other stand characteristics.

New African Intellectuals and New African Political Thought in the Twentieth Century

This book is purposely and deliberately entitled New African Intellectuals and New African Political Thought in the Twentieth Century. It encapsulates the recent debate about the political and cultural role played by the New African intellectuals in developing modern African political thought. The authors argue that the "New African Intellectuals" was a culturally and politically dominant movement of the twentieth century, despite the fact that it was suppressed and oppressed by white colonialism and racism. It was a political and cultural expression of the oppressed and disposed people. During its cultural and political splay the "New African Intellectuals" was preoccupied with three inseparable historical issues: forming the concept of the New African, constructing the foundations of African modernity, and formulating the principles of African Nationalism. Offering fresh insights that are both empirically and theoretically informed, this book illuminates the processes and consequences of the New African scholars and writers. The political contribution made by the New African intellectuals is traced from its origins in literature, music and language. The discussion concludes with an exploration of the dilemma faced by African languages as they are dominated by European languages. The authors argue that this dominance has resulted in the petrifaction and mummification of African languages because outstanding, even great African writers are not using them in re...

THAI DAN VO Genetic diversity of Vietnam tea

Tea plant, Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze, used to produce the oldest and most popular non-alcoholic soft beverage across the world, is one of the most important cash crops of many countries, including Vietnam. Known as a freely cross-pollinated plant, with many overlapping morphological, biochemical and physiological attributes, tea can not be separated into discrete groups to identify various taxa. Since hybrids are used and clonal propagation is recommended, genetic diversity of tea can be diminished if care is not taken. Information on taxonomic characteristics, genetic diversity and biogeography of tea in the living collections may help in identifying genotypes with high productive potentials which could be used as progenitors to improve the existing genetic base of commercially grown tea. Revealing the genetic diversity by using molecular markers has assisted breeders assigning appropriate parents to be used in crosses.

Cornelius Olowola African Traditional Religion and the Christian Faith

The continuing revival of traditional African religion presents an unavoidable challenge to African Christianity. While Africans today are being exposed to modern education, traditional thought is still the source of the basic world-view of most of the people, and the growing Christian population is not exempt from this influence. This book provides a new, constructive and critical approach to African traditional religion, from the standpoint of Christian faith. The major issues discussed are: African beliefs about God; sources of African knowledge about God; African beliefs about the spirit world; worship of the spirits; and African beliefs about sacrifice and sacrifice in a biblical perspective.

Language Pedagogy and Language Use in Africa (PB)

The study of African language pedagogy and use in the Diaspora was initiated in the 1960s as African countries attained independence from colonial powers. In the continent, the enthusiasm for the use of indigenous languages and scholarship has remained relatively moderate as scholars are conflicted in their loyalty to imperial languages. The attitude towards the use of African languages by African leaders has also hampered scholars' efforts to create and sustain the needed visibility for African languages around the world. Needless to say, the study of African languages is not only critical to the study of language theories but also important in changing Africa's overwhelming reliance on European languages to communicate with each other. The reliance has not only affected the politics of the continent but also its economic wellbeing. An analysis of the enormous developmental challenges facing the African continent will reveal that many of the economic, social, political and cultural challenges have major language components. It can actually be said that the challenges of development in Africa are either outright language challenges or are language- based. More significantly, at the social level in many parts of the continent, African languages are now perceived as inadequate means of communication. Language Pedagogy and Language Use in Africa discusses the importance of teaching and using of African languages in the African continent and beyond and provides illustrati...

Diseases transmitted by insects continue to have a major impact on human populations. Malaria, dengue, onchocerciasis, sleeping sickness and leishmaniasis all adversely affect man. Malaria is one of the most important causes of child mortality and reduces economic development in many countries, with agricultural productivity often greatly reduced, as many vectors are active in the wet season favourable for crop production. Vector control is crucial to reduce the extent to which drugs are needed to treat the diseases, as the parasite can become resistant, or the drugs are often too expensive for those living in rural areas and urban slums most affected by these diseases. Chemical control of vectors is often the only method that can reduce vector populations in a disease epidemic, but with vectors developing resistance to insecticides, there is increasing awareness that a single control method is often insufficient and also that chemical control must be integrated where possible with other control measures. In Integrated Vector Management, Graham Matthews covers the main chemical methods of vector control, including the use of indoor residual spraying, space treatments, the use of treated bed nets and larviciding, but also stresses the importance of drainage schemes and improvement of houses to prevent access of indoor vectors, techniques that have largely been responsible for reducing the risk of vector borne diseases in Europe and the USA. This book combines practical information from successful vector control programmes, including early use of DDT, and recent research into a vital resource for all those now involved in combating insect vector borne diseases. Integrated Vector Management is an essential tool, not only for medical entomologists and those directly involved in government health departments, but also for all those who provide the skills and management needed to operate successful area-wide vector management programmes. Libraries in all universities and research establishments world-wide, where biological sciences, medicine and agriculture are studied and taught should have multiple copies of this important book.

What are the origins of slavery and race-based prejudice in the mainland American colonies? How did the Atlantic slave trade operate to supply African labor to colonial America? How did African-American culture form and evolve? How did the American Revolution affect men and women of African descent? Previous editions of this work depicted African-Americans in the American mainland colonies as their contemporaries saw them: as persons from one of the four continents who interacted economically, socially, and politically in a vast, complex Atlantic world. It showed how the society that resulted in colonial America reflected the mix of Atlantic cultures and that a group of these people eventually used European ideas to support creation of a favorable situation for those largely of European descent, omitting Africans, who constituted their primary labor force. In this fourth edition of African Americans in the Colonial Era: From African Origins through the American Revolution, acclaimed scholar Donald R. Wright offers new interpretations to provide a clear understanding of the Atlantic slave trade and the nature of the early African-American experience. This revised edition incorporates the latest data, a fresh Atlantic perspective, and an updated bibliographical essay to thoroughly explore African-Americans’ African origins, their experience crossing the Atlantic, and their existence in colonial America in a broadened, more nuanced way.

Damlègue Lare Modern African Drama. Critical and Theoretical Approaches

This book presents a contour of the literary theories and critical approaches in modern African drama. Theories are discussed against the backdrop of modern African drama and include Symbolism, Naturalism, Nativism, the quest for Indigenous Aesthetics, Oral Narratives, Narratology, Marxism, Cultural Materialism, Structuralism, Poststructuralism, Psycho-analytic criticism, New Historicism, Ecocriticism, Feminism, Postcolonialism and Intertextuality. The objective is to offer researchers and scholars of modern African drama a comprehensive approach of the discipline of African drama from theoretical perspective. Critical debates on the possibility of reading African drama with the lenses of contemporary literary theories have been controversial among critics of African literature. Some critics have been asserting that African drama should be theory-free in its intellectual and scholarly interpretation. Others opine that modern African drama should be analyzed within the mainstream of African literature alongside the novel and poetry. This book seeks to revert these views by pointing out the importance of theories in the interpretation and understanding of African drama.

Newcastle disease virus continues to be a threat to the poultry industry worldwide. The disease has become more pronounced in resource constrained households that rely on backyard poultry system as a source of income and animal protein particularly in under developed countries including Uganda. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of Newcastle disease virus in apparently healthy birds, identify the Newcastle disease virus pathotypes and genotypes circulating in Uganda and to compare the regional distribution of these strains in live bird markets in Uganda. Six hundred fifty (each of cloacal and oropharyngeal swabs) samples were collected from live bird markets in all the regions of Uganda. The samples were processed and inoculated in 10-day old embryonated chicken eggs and incubated for 72 hours. Allantoic fluid was harvested and tested for the presence of Newcastle disease virus using hemagglutination and hemagglutination inhibition tests.

Institutional diversity serves as one of the fundamental hallmarks of American higher education. After a long history of support for many institutional types, the past 40 years have seen a decline in institutional variety. Through a discussion of history, theoretical contexts, and causes of homogenization, this monograph examines how higher education policymakers and leaders can strengthen institutional mission and preserve the benefits of institutional diversity. Higher education needs to serve a variety of functions for students, from liberal arts education to vocational training programs. No single institution or institutional type can adequately fulfill all of these roles, and this monograph considers the rewards and challenges of maintaining a healthy, beneficial diversity. It also covers the roles, purposes, trials, and benefits of institutional diversity. It provides practical examples and theoretical perspectives useful in understanding the complexities of higher education systems and the external pressures faced by colleges and universities that challenge institutional mission and threaten institutional diversity and its well-established benefits for students and society. This is the third issue of the 39th volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Gerhard Kubik Angola in the Black Cultural Expressions of Brazil

The transplantation of African musical cultures to the Americas was a multi-track and multi-time process. In the past many historical studies of African diaspora music, dance and other aspects of expressive culture concentrated on events in the Americas. What happened before the American trauma and simultaneously in Africa was often looked at unhistorically. In this book, world-renowned ethnomusicologist Gerhard Kubik considers African music and dance forms as the products of people living in various African cultures which have changed continuously in history, absorbing and processing elements from inside and outside the continent, creating new styles and fashions all the time. African diaspora music then appears as a consequent and creative extension overseas of African musical cultures that have existed in the period between the sixteenth and the twentieth century. From this perspective African diaspora music cannot be described adequately in terms of "retentions" and "survivals," as if African cultures in the Americas were doomed from the outset and perhaps only by some act of mercy permitted to "retain" certain elements. Using field research and documentary sources, Kubik tracks down some aspects of the Angolan dimension in the panorama of African music and dance cultures in Brazil, and also addresses methodology applicable in the wider context of African diaspora cultural studies.

However, unlike African Americans, immigrant Nigerian men also have other unique health needs. Preventive health strategies used for African Americans can be applied to immigrant Nigerian men; however, accessibility to health insurance poses unique challenges to them.
