This special issue addresses the construction of ethnic identity among international transracial adoptees, which typically involve the placement of Black, Asian, Hispanic, or Multiracial children with White parents. International transracial adoptees, similar to immigrants, navigate a cultural and ethnic context other than their birth culture. However, they are unique in that they navigate these experiences within families who don’t share their cultural, ethnic, and racial background. Critical questions emerge about the construction and development of their ethnic identity. These questions include the role that transracial adoptive parents play in providing cultural socialization (exposure to children’s birth culture); the impact of culture camps designed to provide cultural socialization in the context of peers; the intersection of adoptive identity and ethnic identity and youth adjustment; whether relations between ethnic identity and adjustment are linear or curvilinear; the role of bicultural identity integration as a link between ethnic identity and pscyhosocial adjustment; and ethnic identity processes among internationally transracially adopted young adults who mentor younger adoptees from similar cultures. These questions are addressed in this special issue in a collection of studies that examine ethnic identity among diverse international transracial adoptees, at different ages, adopted into two countries and using differing sample sizes and methodologies. International transracial adoptive families represent a microcosm of the growing international, transracial, and transethnic social transactions taking place in this diverse world. The collective findings in this special issue about the multidimensionality of ethnic identity and its intersectionality with other identities across developmental eras not only enhance knowledge about identity development among international transracial adoptees, but also expand understanding about identity development in general. This is the 150th volume in this Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in this subject area. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts from that field.

Price Dynamics in Equilibrium Models - The Search for Equilibrium and the Emergence of Endogenous Fluctuations

A long-standing unsolved problem in economic theory is how economic equilibria are attained. Price Dynamics in Equilibrium Models: The Search for Equilibrium and the Emergence of Endogenous Fluctuations considers a number of adjustment processes in different economic models and investigates their dynamical behaviour. Two important themes arising in this context are "bounded rationality" and "nonlinear dynamics". Important sub-themes of the book are the following: how do boundedly rational agents interact with their environment and does this interaction in some sense lead to rational outcomes (which may or may not correspond to equilibria)? The second sub-theme deals with the consequences of the nonlinear dynamical nature of many adjustment processes. The results presented in this volume indicate that endogenous fluctuations are the rule rather than the exception in the search for equilibrium. The book uses the theory of nonlinear dynamics to analyze the dynamics of the different economic models. Due to the complexity of most of the models, an important role is played by computational methods. In particular, at regular instances the models are analyzed by numerical simulations and some computer-assisted proofs are provided. It also covers a wide range of dynamical models from economic theory. Most of these models merge the theory of nonlinear economic dynamics with the theory of bounded rationality. The book is written for anyone with an interest in economic theory in general ...

In Work, Identity, and Legal Status at Rome, Sandra R. Joshel examines Roman commemorative inscriptions from the first and second centuries A.D. to determine ways in which slaves, freed slaves, and unprivileged freeborn citizens used work to frame their identities. The inscriptions indicate the significance of work-as a source of community, a way to reframe the conditions of legal status, an assertion of activity against upper-class passivity, and a standard of assessment based on economic achievement rather than birth. Drawing on sociology, anthropology, ethnography, and women's history, this thoroughly documented volume illuminates the dynamics of work and slavery at Rome.Sandra R. Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Mannheim (Lehrstuhl für Anglistische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: Travel writing helps travel writers to redefine their identity and to revise their concept of home as well as to determine its relative position in the world when using it as a frame of reference. In "Wanderlust: A Love Affaire with Five Continents", Elisabeth Eaves, both author and protagonist, renegotiates these two concepts - home and identity - in her inner journey of self-exploration. Making use of a qualitative and explorative approach, this paper investigates the question of how the search for identity and belonging is fashioned in the book. First, the theoretical part of the paper relates the concepts of home and identity to infer how home can function as a source of identity. These theoretical frameworks are then applied in the subsequent section to assess the manner and success of Elisabeth's strategies of identity construction providing an answer to the question whether her mobile lifestyle as a modern nomad leads to homelessness and lack of identity. Finally, the analysis section breaks down the narrative techniques Elisabeth uses to secure her public identity as travel writer and relates them to the construction of her personal identity.

Nikola Stojkoski Essay on Human Reason. On the Principle of Identity and Difference

The nature of human reason is one of the thorniest of mysteries in philosophy. The reason appears in many specific forms within general areas such as cognition, thinking, experiencing beauty, and moral judgment. These forms are “perfectly” known in philosophy, yet an unknown pattern has been noticed which shows us that they are all a variation of the same theme: truth is an identity relation between the “thought” and “reality”; justice is an identity relation between the given and the deserved; beauty is an identity relation as rhyme is an identity relation between the final sounds of words; rhythm is an identity relation between time intervals; symmetry is an identity relation between two halves; proportion is an identity relation between two ratios; anaphora is an identity relation between the initial words. Particular things are identities in themselves and universals are identities between particulars. One idea associates another idea identical to it; an analogy is an identity between relations; induction is an identification between the known and unknown instances; and all the logic rests on the law of identity. What is common for all of them is the nature of reason itself.

Questions of identity continue to intrigue theologians in Africa, and African intellectuals often note communal emphases in African thought. This raises the question, How do ecclesiologies in Africa engage with identity concerns, and how do they envision the Christian identity? Stephanie Lowery argues in this book that theologians in Africa provide theological and biblical arguments regarding Christian identity that are relevant to individual Christians and ecclesiologies in all contexts. She also proposes the social identity approach as a tool that can both further articulate and advance these discussions. ""Drawing from her exposure to African Christianity and expertise in African theology, Lowery has produced an accessible and insightful work that discusses in a distinctive manner the relationship between identity and church as imagined in the works of some key African theologians. National Identity. Theory and Research

A volume in Cross National ResearchNational identity has been the subject of much controversy and debate. Some have even suggested dropping the concept entirely. One group, Essentialists, argue that national identity is fixed, cultural, based on birth and ancestry. Another viewpoint is posited by Postmodernists who argue that national identity is malleable, invented or imagined. As alternatives, some have suggested that national identity is a hybrid of both Essentialist and Postmodernist views. And still others bypass this argument and suggest that national identity should be based on civic factors, such as shared values and norms about citizenship. While controversy and debate are healthy exercises in any science, at some point order must be established if science is to proceed. The present volume is based on the idea that national identity is an ideal-type concept; it does not completely capture reality, but is used for analytic purposes. In addition, rather than focusing on these theoretical debates, we pursue research with the idea that results from research will contribute to the field of national identity. Three areas of national identity are discussed: theoretical, national, and individual. Two chapters focus on the major theories about national identity, provide critiques, and make suggestions about the topic. In section two, six chapters provide case studies of national identity on Scotland, Ireland, Russia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Germany, and France. In section three, t...

Structural dynamics is a subset of structural analysis which covers the behavior of structures subjected to dynamic loading. The subject has seen rapid growth and also change in how the basic concepts can be interpreted. For instance, the classical notions of discretizing the operator of a dynamic structural model have given way to a set-theoretic, function-space based framework, which is more conducive to implementation with a computer. This modern perspective, as adopted in this book, is also helpful in putting together the various tools and ideas in a more integrated style. Elements of Structural Dynamics: A New Perspective is devoted to covering the basic concepts in linear structural dynamics, whilst emphasizing their mathematical moorings and the associated computational aspects that make their implementation in software possible. Key features: Employs a novel ‘top down’ approach to structural dynamics. Contains an insightful treatment of the computational aspects, including the finite element method, that translate into numerical solutions of the dynamic equations of motion. Consistently touches upon the modern mathematical basis for the theories and approximations involved. Elements of Structural Dynamics: A New Perspective is a holistic treatise on structural dynamics and is an ideal textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate students in Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil engineering departments. This book also forms a useful reference for researchers and engineers in industry.

The present study was aimed at exploring the relationship between personality traits and marital adjustment, among working and non-working married women. Sample of the study consisted of 100 working and non-working married women (working married women = 50, non-working married women = 50). Their age ranged between 25 to 46 years. Adjective checklist (John, 1990) was administered in order to measure the level of Neuroticism, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness among working and nonworking married women. Urdu Translation of Dyadic Adjustment Scale (Naseer, 2002) was administered to measure the Marital Adjustment of the entire sample. Results indicated that there was no correlation between the personality traits and marital adjustment. However it was found that working married women were facing more problems in their married life as compared to non-working married women.

Stuart Joy Time, Memory . Identity. The Films of Christopher Nolan

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Film Science, grade: none, , course: Film Studies, language: English, abstract: In spite of the diversity of Christopher Nolan's body of work, the director's experience of time, memory and identity has perhaps remained an integral part of his filmmaking. From Following (Christopher Nolan, 1998) to The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008) his films are debatably rooted in a cinematic experiment to interrogate the construction of time and the malleable nature of memory and identity. It is this examination of time and identity that unites the wide range of Nolan's work. Indeed, in many respects Nolan has arguably sought to develop a filmic language that concretely resembles the abstract structures of memory function and systems of identity. With this in mind, this thesis examines the representations of time, memory and identity in Nolan's films in order to attain an understanding of identity in contemporary cinema and thought. The paper will consider the reflexive strategies and implications behind Nolan's obsession with identity, not only in terms of his body of work but more importantly, in terms of what it can reveal about cinema's own relationship to issues of identity. More specifically, I contend that the insights of scientific, psychological and sociological literature on identity and memory as well as those of contemporary filmmaking are engaged in communicating the complex relationships amongs...

Damen Joe Mapping the Self-Portrait - Navigating Identity and Autobiography in Visual Art

A traditional self-portrait in visual art is popularly understood as a singular image - usually a painting, photograph, drawing or other similar graphic medium - where the artist is also the subject. This text expands this view by considering the self as changeable, constantly in flux, and therefore impossible to capture in just one image. Exploring the possibilities of representing identity, this book focuses on the writing of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, allowing for an understanding of identity that acknowledges the movement and change of the self and allows an art-work to represent identity as a constantly changing form. With an emphasis on narrative-based self-representation, this text explores the construction of identity and possibilities of representing the self through autobiography and visual art.

African American Males and Education. Researching the Convergence of Race and Identity

African American Males in Education: Researching the Convergence of Race and Identity addresses anumber of research gaps. This book emerges at a time when new social dynamics of race and otheridentities are shaping, but also shaped by, education. Educational settings consistently perpetuate racial andother forms of privilege among students, personnel, and other participants in education. For instance, differential access to social networks still visibly cluster by race, continuing the work of systemic privilegeby promoting outcome inequalities in education and society. The issues defining the relationship between African American males and education remain complex. Although there has been substantial discussionabout the plight of African American male participants and personnel in education, only modest attempts have been made to center analysis of identityand identity intersections in the discourse. Additionally, more attention to African American male teachers and faculty is needed in light of theirunique cultural experiences in educational settings and expectations to mentor and/or socialize other African Americans, particularly males.

One of the first books to provide in-depth and systematic application of finite element methods to the field of stochastic structural dynamics The parallel developments of the Finite Element Methods in the 1950’s and the engineering applications of stochastic processes in the 1940’s provided a combined numerical analysis tool for the studies of dynamics of structures and structural systems under random loadings. In the open literature, there are books on statistical dynamics of structures and books on structural dynamics with chapters dealing with random response analysis. However, a systematic treatment of stochastic structural dynamics applying the finite element methods seems to be lacking. Aimed at advanced and specialist levels, the author presents and illustrates analytical and direct integration methods for analyzing the statistics of the response of structures to stochastic loads. The analysis methods are based on structural models represented via the Finite Element Method. In addition to linear problems the text also addresses nonlinear problems and non-stationary random excitation with systems having large spatially stochastic property variations. Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2,0, University of Hamburg (Institut für Journalistik und Kommunikationswissenschaft), language: English, abstract: In these difficult times of the European sovereign debt crisis, this project aims at exploring the effect of this unprecedented crisis situation onto the sense of a European identity. For this purpose, the research Question has been formulated as follows: How has a sense of European identity been affected by the European sovereign debt crisis? The notion of a European identity which lies at the heart of this study is everything but new to the policy makers in Brussels, to social theorists and to political scientists from around the globe. As elusive as the concept of a European identity might first appear, the sheer amount of academic publications, research projects, think tanks and media coverage that have contemplated the notion of European identity, indicate its fundamental importance to the future of the European project and its institutions. Given the fundamentally altered circumstances, which Europe has been facing since the onset of the European debt crisis in late 2009, it becomes necessary to reassess the contemporary state of an evolving sense of European identity. As large parts of the Academic community and various EU lead polls have suggested, the interplay between national and supra-national "imagined communities" and the E...

Hence, this Master Thesis empirically seeks to find a divergence of language proficiency and willingness to communicate towards the adjustment dimensions and additionally investigates adjustment in the beginning of the international assignment and the current point-in-time. Furthermore, these relationships are examined on a potential interaction of the expatriates' hierarchical position, since it has been argued that language is more important for supervisory personnel and willingness to communicate more denoted to upper management levels. The moderating effect of the assignees' assignment vector is scrutinized in order to confirm whether the comprehensive model of international adjustment (Black et al, 1991) applies equally well to all 97 participating expatriates. Quantitative analysis revealed a positive relationship of both communication skills towards interaction and work adjustment dimension with a higher significance level at the current point-in-time and a slightly higher importance of willingness to communicate to explain the relationship. Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject African Studies, University of Nigeria (University of Ibadan, Nigeria), language: English, abstract: This paper focuses on the socio-political and economic issues involved in the production of oil producing and non-oil producing communities as categories of identification in Nigeria. Using Ilaje people of Ondo State as a case, this paper, through qualitative methods of study, examines the factors of history, elite politics, and the state in identity formulation and the effects which the construction of the "other" among a supposed homogeneous group has on the existing forms of social relationship. It is established from the study that though the advantage of the oil producing community identity is utilized to attain political and economic height, the identity remains subordinate to a much larger and inclusive Ilaje identity. Generally, this paper is a reflection on how identity is manipulated even in the local context to suit competition for resources. It discusses the cultural creation of space and its hegemonization in quest of making exclusive and optimum advantage of resource in the space. The paper concludes that even when the spatial differentiation is yet to generate any remarkable conflict, the feelings of "oneness" appears to have been sufficiently weakened.

Research in insect population dynamics is important for more reasons than just protecting forest communities. Insect populations are among the main ecological units included in the analysis of stability of ecological systems. Moreover, it is convenient to test new methods of analyzing population and community stability on the insect-related data, as by now ecologists and entomologists have accumulated large amounts of such data. In this book, the authors analyze population dynamics of quite a narrow group of insects – forest defoliators. It is hoped that the methods proposed herein for the analysis of population dynamics of these species may be useful and effective for analyzing population dynamics of other animal species and their effects and role in global warming. What can insects tell us about our environment and our ever-changing climate? It is through studies like this one that these important answers can be obtained, along with data on the insects and their behaviors themselves. The authors present new theories on modeling and data accumulation, using cutting-edge processes never before published for such a wide audience. This volume presents the state-of-the-art in the science, and it is an essential piece of any entomologist’s and forest engineer’s library.

Stuparu Lorena-Valeria Our Identity. A Substantial Reality or a Convention .

The volume "OUR IDENTITY: A SUBSTANTIAL REALITY OR A CONVENTION ? " is focused on the individual identity problem. Individual identity emphasizes its character as a problematic notion given that the modernity defines the individual both as a subject and as an object of knowledge, in the center of philosophical preoccupations which gives him a power that will become manifest in the political sphere. If liberal thinking, and especially postmodern liberalism, built a concept of individual identity that transcends national and even political levels, from a conservative view there is no "pure" individual identity as an image of an excessive spirit of initiative. Also, the role of democratization in the political and social behavior of individuals, in the context of globalization, cannot ignore the role of social and political imaginary in configuration of individuality and citizenship - in analogy with existential goals of individuals. On the other hand, a contradiction appears when we make theoretical generalizations on "individual identity", since there are at least as many identities, as there are individuals.

Document from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, , course: Interkulturelles Management, language: English, abstract: This is the most important question man is faced with, because his self-perception guides his values and behaviours. The solution of the question will impact himself and as a consequence the environment. Therefore it is the most important individual and social question, whether it is avoided or solved in one cultural way or the other. Therefore it is also not surprising that all civilisations and cultures on the on hand tend to agree on the prime importance of the question and as a consequence try to find culturally conditioned solutions to the question on the other hand. According to the prevailing paradigm, philosophical, spiritual and, nowadays, supposedly more scientific ones, based on natural science and the humanities alike, are offered. Social science offers cultural values models and the dynamics of group affiliation throughout socialization to answer the question on the assumption that man's self-perception is a cultural construct. Here man's identity is a matter of sociocultural conditioning in addition to unique individual and universal endowments which, nonetheless, are additional conditioners. So, the term conditioning prevails. Science concludes to science-specific determinisms which are also conditioned perception, and philosophical and spiritual answers as to man's identity bear...

The enlargement of the European Union in 2004 brought for Polish immigrants to the UK new opportunities and challenges in terms of social and cultural adjustment. Cultural diversity in the UK is, for many Poles, a new experience as Poland is a relatively homogenous country. This book gives an insight into attitudes among recent Polish immigrants towards ethnicity and 'race'. The author investigates the historical, social and emotional contexts of those perceptions and argues that psychosocial dynamics are at the core of peoples' attitudes towards other ethnic groups. Thus, stereotyping and prejudices are present regardless of socio-economic background. However, the author suggests that perceptions of 'racial' inequality in the UK have an impact on Poles attitudes towards non white citizens. The book will be of particular interest to researchers and students in the fields of sociology, ethnic minorities studies, identity and migration, and European studies.

Ana Russell-Omaljev Divided We Stand. Discourses on Identity in .First. and .Other. Serbia. Social Construction of the Self and the Other

Serbia is still widely thought of as an unfinished state, whose people struggle to establish a compelling identity narrative in answer to the question 'who are we?'. While existing literature has over-analyzed Serbian nationalism, the Serbian public sphere remains largely ignored. This engaging and timely book fills this gap by giving context to the persistent and overwhelming dialogue between opposing factions on the identity spectrum in Serbia. Russell-Omaljev's focus on elite discourses provides a fresh perspective on this contentious subject. It offers an original understanding of the competing arguments surrounding 'First' and 'Other' Serbia and of the contested visions of Serbian national identity and broader European identity.By closely examining the identity vocabulary of Serbian elites and the opposing ways in which these elites view the use of labels such as 'anti-Serbian', 'patriot', and 'traitor', this book provides a vital lesson in post-conflict nation-building and raises important questions about the symbolic representations of political and cultural identities. A much-needed and compelling intervention in the Serbian identity discourse, Russell-Omaljev's work is a must-read for any researcher on the Western Balkans.

"This is a very professional and empirical study on Israeli attitudes to both the Holocaust and the Naqba and their implications on the construction of present-day Israeli identities. The scholarship is sound and the methodology impressive." · Ilan Pappé, author of A History of Modern Palestine. One Land, Two People. The question of identity is one of present-day Israel's cardinal and most pressing issues. In a comprehensive examination of the identity issue, this study focuses on attitudes toward the Jewish people in Israel and the Diaspora; the Holocaust and its repercussions on identity; attitudes toward the state of Israel and Zionism; and attitudes toward Jewish religion. Israeli Arab students (Israeli Palestinians) and Jewish Israeli students were asked corresponding questions regarding their identity. It was found that, rather than lessening its impact over the years, the Holocaust has become a major factor, at times the paramount factor in Jewish identity. Similarly, among Palestinians the Naqba has become a major factor in Palestinian-Israeli identity. However, the overall results show that the identity of a Jewish citizen of Israel is not purely Israeli, nor is it purely Jewish. It is, to varying degrees, a synthesis of Jewish and Israeli components, depending on the particular sub-groups or sub-identities. Examine the structure and context of identity development in a number of different countries: Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Italy, China, and Japan. While some identity development proceeds in much the same way across national contexts, this issue suggests that there are important nuances in the ways in which identity unfolds in each country. Macrocultural forces, such as permissiveness in Sweden, collective guilt in Germany, and filial piety in China, direct the identity development process in important ways. Expectations regarding obligations and ties to family also direct the identity development process differently in many of the countries included in this volume—such as extended co-residence with parents in Italy, lifelong obligations to follow parents' wishes in China, and democratic independence in Sweden. The various countries are compared and contrasted against the United States, where much of the early identity research was conducted. The volume also reviews specific identity challenges facing immigrant and ethnic-minority individuals in countries that receive large numbers of immigrants—Germany, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy—and suggests many future directions for identity research in various parts of the world. This is the 138th volume in this series. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in child and adolescent development. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts on that topic.

Mondol Juliet Marital Adjustment

Marital adjustment is an evolutional process between a couple . Marital adjustment refers to a state of accommodation which is achieved in different areas where conflict may exist. Marriage in India is thought to be an epitome of sacrifice, togetherness, belongingness, sharing and evolving . In the words of Tagore"Birds build their nests with straw. It matters little to them to leave their homes and go. But we build ours with our minds. That becomes an invisible shelter in all that we do ,in our work, our reading , our thinking. Just as a cart makes grooves on its journey which we can feel in the swaying of our bodies, a mind involuntarily settles into grooves it makes with mind's eye. And we don't want to get out of them even when there is occasion for it".The topic for the present study establishes a relationship between marital adjustment and psychophysical well-being of the married couples. There were two major objectives of the present study. 1.To examine the extent of adjustment and well-being in case of single and dual career couples. 2.Relationship between the marital adjustment and psychophysical well-being for the single and dual career couples.
