Climate change is a burning problem of today.Studied showed that developing countries are more vulnerable to Climate Change and are expected to suffer from adverse Climatic impacts than developed countries. In a humid climate like that of Nepal, there will be changes in spatial and temporal distribution of temperatures and precipitation due to Climate Change. Agriculture is mostly affected by Climate Change.Decreased winter rainfall and prolonged drought leads to reduced production of Wheat. So there is a great need of Climate Change research.Study done in Nawalparasi District of Nepal showed that till date Climate Change have contributed positively to the yield of Wheat. Change in per unit percentage of temperature and Rainfall changed the yield by 1.7% and 0.29% respectively. Farmers have started to take adaptation strategies to be protected from the effect of Climate Change in coming days. Farmers in this District are shifting to other sources of income from the farming as it is seen to be less profitable. So this book will be useful for policy makers, researchers, and for small holder farmers suffering from Climate change.

A recent mapping on vulnerability and poverty in Africa put Ethiopia as one of the most vulnerable country to climate change with least capacity to respond. Pastoralists are far worse jeopardized because of their geographic exposure, low income, greater reliance on climate sensitive sectors, and weaker capacity to adapt. The ambition of the manuscript is to solicit the knowledge about climate change, perceptions, adaptation strategies and the different socioeconomic, demographic and institutional factors influencing Ethiopian pastoralists’ perceptions and their choice of adaptation strategies. The proportion of the pastoralists perceived the climate change and its induced hazards is high. Pastoralists were using combination of different strategies to adapt the climate change adverse effects which include: herd composition diversification, herd and feed management improvement, water harvesting and reserving, and extended mobility patterns. Pastoralists choice of adaptation were constrained by different barriers. Therefore, the manuscript will look a possible means to strengthen the local pastoralists’ resilience capacity to the adverse impacts of climate change.

Climate change adaptation is currently at the forefront of development discourse for the developing world, especially on the African continent. Given the importance of rain-fed agriculture in the economies of African countries, one of the most appropriate strategies for climate change adaptation in Africa is the use of accurate and timely climate early warning information to guide farming activities. Incorporating the local communities in the development of these strategies, and using their local/indigenous knowledge introduces local context to the problem, ensures ownership and promotes sustainability. This book presents a case study of the Nganyi community of Western Kenya, showing how the local/indigenous knowledge of a community can be used to improve a climate early warning system for enhanced resilience to impacts of climate change.

Adaptation is the poor cousin of the climate change challenge – the glamour of international debate is around global mitigation agreements, while the bottom-up activities of adaptation, carried out in community halls and local government offices, are often overlooked. Yet, as international forums fail to deliver reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the world is realising that effective adaptation will be essential across all sectors to deal with the unavoidable impacts of climate change. The need to understand how to adapt effectively, and to develop appropriate adaptation options and actions, is becoming increasingly urgent. This book reports the current state of knowledge on climate change adaptation, and seeks to expose and debate key issues in adaptation research and practice. It is framed around a number of critical areas of adaptation theory and practice, including: Advances in adaptation thinking, Enabling frameworks and policy for adaptation, Engaging and communicating with practitioners, Key challenges in adaptation and development, Management of natural systems and agriculture under climate change, Ensuring water security under a changing climate, Urban infrastructure and livelihoods, and The nexus between extremes, disaster management and adaptation. It includes contributions from many of the leading thinkers and practitioners in adaptation today. The book is based on key contributions from the First International Conference on Climate Change Adaptation ‘Climate Adaptation Futures’, held on the Gold Coast, Australia, in June 2010. That three-day meeting of over 1000 researchers and practitioners in adaptation from 50 countries was the first of its kind. Readership: The book is essential reading for a wide range of individuals involved in climate change adaptation, including: Researchers, Communication specialists, Decision-makers and policy makers (e.g. government staff, local council staff), On-ground adaptation practitioners (e.g. aid agencies, government workers, NGOs), Postgraduate and graduate students, and Consultants.

The adverse effects of climate change and climate variability have become some of the biggest environmental and socio-economic challenges for society, and for food supply chain actors, in particular. Serving as a serious inhibitor to the attainment of food security, climate change poses a fundamental threat to the availability, accessibility, stability and utilization of nutritious food and quality drinking water. The threat of this global phenomenon is not only apparent from the difficulties faced by all food supply chain actors, but is also felt acutely by households dependent on semi-subsistence agriculture. As evidenced by numerous studies conducted by the academic community, governmental and non-governmental organisations, climate change and climate variability will have disastrous effects on entire food supply chains across the world. This edited volume looks to address: How vulnerable are food supply chain actors to climate change and climatic variability? What adaptation strategies are they adopting? How is the resilience of food supply chains being supported? Are they being financed and/or supported by international organizations to cope with climate change? And what governmental support are they receiving to help cope with climate change? This book is an essential resource for students, lecturers, researchers, agribusinesses, marketing firms, agricultural institutions, climate change adaptation institutions, policymakers and many others with an interest in agricultu...

Climate change is a global phenomenon. World climates have changed in the geological past, are currently changing and will change in the future. Climate is one of the key factors affecting agricultural production. Hardly a year passes when farmers in most parts of the world do not suffer from either too little or too much rainfall. Even when the amount is normal they suffer when it comes too early or too late. In places where rain-fed agriculture is the norm, a slight shift in the timing of rain in the agricultural calendar brings sever damage on crops and threatens the sustainability of livelihoods. This makes agriculture often considered to be the most vulnerable sector to climate change and variability. Thus, climate variability and change has always been of fundamental concerns in countries like Ethiopia and people have been trying to cope with and adapt to it. This study, therefore, tried to assess the existing social and economic impacts of climate change and variability on the livelihoods of the smallholder farmers and surveys their adaption strategies together with the prevailing barriers of adaptation in rural Ethiopia. This will provide valuable information on the issue.

Adapting to a changing climate requires dealing with multiple uncertainties and complexity in order to allow proactive action. Therefore, cities and regions around the globe face the challenge of exploring flexible and innovative forms of governance which have to address specific local or regional vulnerabilities and build capacity to accommodate future change. This raises questions about the roles of stakeholders, the involvement of citizens, the composition and use of formal and informal instruments as well as the implementation of different forms of organization and regulation at the local and regional level. This book provides case studies from cities and regions all around the world. It analyses climate change adaptation from a perspective of organizing, administering and implementing local and regional adaptation strategies and measures. It looks into actors, actor-constellations, institutions and networks of climate adaptation. And, it provides the reader with knowledge about good practices and experiences to be transferred for solving adaptation challenges in cities and regions around the globe.

A groundbreaking synthesis of climate change adaptation strategies for small island states, globally A wide ranging, comprehensive, and multi-disciplinary study, this is the first book that focuses on the challenges posed by climate change impacts on the Small Island Developing States (SIDS). While most of the current literature on the subject deals with specific regions, this book analyses the impacts of climate change across the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean, and the African and Indian Ocean regions in order to identify and tackle the real issues faced by all the small island States. As the global effects of climate change become increasingly evident and urgent, it is clear that the impact on small islands is going to be particularly severe. These island countries are especially vulnerable to rising sea levels, hurricanes and cyclones, frequent droughts, and the disruption of agriculture, fisheries and vital ecosystems. On many small islands, the migration of vulnerable communities to higher ground has already begun. Food security is an increasingly pressing issue. Hundreds of thousands of islanders are at risk. Marine ecosystems are threatened by acidification and higher seawater temperatures leading to increased pressure on fisheries—still an important source of food for many island communities. The small island developing States emit only small amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Yet many SIDS governments are allocating scarce financial and human resources in an effort to further reduce their emissions. This is a mistake. Rather than focus on mitigation (i.e., the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions) Climate Change Adaptation in Small Island Developing States concentrates on adaptation. The author assesses the immediate and future impacts of climate change on small islands, and identifies a range of proven, cost-effective adaptation strategies. The book: Focuses on the challenges of climate change faced by all of the world’s small island developing States; Provides comprehensive coverage of the latest research into the most likely environment impacts; Uses numerous case studies to describe proven, practical, and cost-effective policies, including disaster management strategies—which can be developed and implemented by the SIDS; Takes a unique, multidisciplinary approach, making it of particular interest to specialists in a variety of disciplines, including both earth sciences and life sciences. This book is a valuable resource for all professionals and students studying climate change and its impacts. It is also essential reading for government officials and the ministries of the 51 small island developing States, as well as the signatories to the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

Climate change impacts are currently being observed and studies show that poor countries are the most vulnerable. Using Bangladesh as a case study, this research examines the impacts of climate change to poor, rural communities and further explores the measures that are carried out to combat its existing and future threats. This research also aims to look into the existing socio-economic vulnerabilities of Bangladesh in order to establish the linkage between climate change and development. Findings of this study show that poor communities are impacted by climate change through the loss of lives, assets and livelihoods. Adaptation to climate change is therefore necessary and should be integrated in development planning and objectives, to ensure that the most vulnerable groups are represented. Overall this research has observed that Bangladesh is still lacking this capacity, despite the spontaneous adaptation being practised by local communities. This study has further observed that the most common response in addressing climate change impacts to vulnerable communities in Bangladesh is community-based adaptation, whi...

Emerging gender and climate change literature highlights the gender dimensions of vulnerability and adaptive capacity to climate variability and change. However, still in its infancy, it provides limited analysis of the mechanisms linking gender inequality to adaptation to climate change. It also tends to generalize this context-specific analysis to a global South, exhibiting a wide gap of data and analysis in the Arab Region where both the gender gap and vulnerability to climate change are pronounced. To address this, this thesis explores these vulnerability mechanisms in the context of marginalized communities with a large gender gap and climate-dependent livelihoods. It then examines approaches to address gender in adaptation to climate change. This research explores these gender-adaptation linkages through a case study of a fishing village in Alexandria, Egypt. This study argues that women’s differential vulnerability is brought about by cultural, financial, informational and institutional constraints that are directly and indirectly linked to the subordination of women in society.

The impacts of climate change seem to suddenly emerge without warning and could dampen the growth of agriculture sector over the long run. A country’s food security will be jeopardized if the grave long-term challenges spearheaded by changes in climate dampen the country’s initiatives to boost its agricultural production. Realizing the adverse effects of climate change, this study therefore attempts at predicting the impacts of climate change on Malaysians’ main staple food crop, which is paddy. Adjusting to climate change will require better management of agricultural practices and systems. This study represents an effort in this direction as it aims to discover a feasible adaptation strategy. This will also empower the government’s development plan and policies, especially in regard to ensuring the sustainability of paddy sector and an ample food supply for future generation. We hope that this book will contribute to the body of knowledge particularly in the issue of climate change in the agriculture sector and its adaptation strategy in Malaysia.

European Climate Vulnerabilities and Adaptation: A Spatial Planning Perspective analyses the impacts climate change might have on regions and their local economies. Regions clearly differ in view of the complex patterns of climate change impact, but also regarding the given vulnerability and coping capacity. Impacts of climate change can have a marked effect on the functioning of regions and sectors of the society, if not properly addressed. Readiness to adapt to the impacts and lasting changes counts towards vulnerability of the regions. The book builds upon the findings of a project conducted under the European observation network for territorial development and cohesion (ESPON), The ESPON Climate project. Following the stipulations of the ESPON programme and the tender for this project the territorial focus is the raison d’être and methodological core of the project as a whole and its various research actions: The outcomes of each action will be focused on what impacts global climate change will have for the different European regions and how the regions can cope with the projected impacts in order to become less vulnerable to climate change. This book: Provides a comprehensive analysis of climate change impacts on 29 European regions and their local economies Takes an interdisciplinary approach dealing with the physical, social, economic, environmental, cultural and institutional aspects of climate change vulnerability and the consequences for spatial planning Builds on the findings of the ESPON Climate project with a policy focused approach Is in full colour throughout with a broad range of case studies

Climate change poses an increasing threat to the sustainability of agricultural production and livelihood strategies of poor rural people worldwide. The concentration of green house gases in the atmosphere has increased significantly. The amount of Carbon dioxide has increased by 31%, Methane by 151% and Nitrous oxide by 17 %. Increasing concentration of the anthropogenically produced green house gases (Carbon dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, Chlorofluorocarbons and Water vapour) are responsible for the changes in the climate of the Earth. The rise of temperature is greater in Nepal than the average of global rise with intense rains, floods and drought. Gradually, year-by-year changes in temperature have also been observed, with a 0.09ºC per year increase recorded in the Himalayas and 0.04ºC per year increase in the Terai with higher increases in winter. Farmers should have proper knowledge on adaptation practices like use of drought varieties, water harvesting technology, land management techniques, and use of resource conservation technology like mulching, zero tillage etc. as immediate response of farming communities against climate change.

Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of climate change adaptation (CCA) poses an assortment of thorny methodological challenges. Individually, none are unique to CCA, but together they represent a very distinctive conundrum facing practitioners and policy makers. Adding to this complexity further, climate change may be global in nature but its impacts, and how we respond to them through adaptation efforts, cut across scales, sectors, and levels of intervention. As investments in climate adaptation increase, organizations are seeking to measure, assess and understand an array of adaptation initiatives, and derive learnings to inform policy and praxis. This issue presents findings from many of the most important contemporary CCA program evaluation research initiatives. The chapters represent the most coherent and current collection of CCA M&E research in this emerging and important field, written by many of its leading experts. Filled with examples and insights in formulating coherent responses to methodological challenges, it will be of interest to M&E scholars and practitioners globally. This is the 147th issue in the New Directions for Evaluation series from Jossey-Bass. It is an official publication of the American Evaluation Association.

In Bangladesh, climate vulnerability is increasing along with poverty. But during international climate change debates, concern over 'justice' is glowing to finance adaptation. In this line, Bangladesh formulated 'National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA)' under UNFCCC guidance to abate climate change impact. The research views 'mainstreaming' as a process of promoting 'adaptation' to "transform vulnerability into (climate) security". In Bangladesh, NAPA mainstreaming is government-led and subject to use existing institutions and regulatory frameworks. Therefore, in what extend NAPA mainstreaming will be successful to promote 'socially-just adaptation to climate change' is difficult to predict. Here, the context is critically analyzed to structure institutional problems and actor dynamics to recommend policy amendments for intended mainstreaming. However, successful mainstreaming lies on balancing conflicts among diverse actors in order to promote security for the vulnerable people. Therefore, the research is arguing that the treatment of social justice must be included both in NAPA formulation and implementation phases for intended (socially-just) mainstreaming.

This book is based on awareness of the Bangladeshi small farmers regarding effect on climate change on their farm ecosystem. Basically the poor and less literate small farmers in Bangladesh are quite unknown about the actual effect of climate change but they have realized it in their day to day farming activities and due to lack of knowledge and awareness they are not enable to cope up with this climate change phenomenon. Actually this is a rare type thesis work in Bangladesh. Very few researches were conducted in Bangladesh based on this topic specifically. So, this book may be a mile stone in Bangladesh Context so far for farm level researches based on climate change and its effect on farm ecosystem. In this book the three components like biotic, abiotic and micro-climatic components of farm ecosystem were identified critically and have discussed widely. But this book is not self sufficient on discussed topic. Further study would be conducted in this regard. If any suggestions, comments and other query please let know the author and the author will appreciate those cordially.Hope for the best. May the supreme consciousness give us the ability to do something well for the mankind.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Tourism, grade: -, The University of Applied Sciences in Eberswalde (Nachhaltiges Tourismusmanagement), course: Nachhaltiger Tourismus, language: English, abstract: This study is undertaken with the background that tourism is an active contributor to the man-made climate change and is also vulnerable to impacts of climate change. Apart from climate adaptation measures, the tourism industry needs to develop mitigation strategies to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Tour operators play the key role in climate protection measures in the tourism industry but may also face significant challenges due to climate change. This paper focuses on carbon offsetting as one tool of tour operators' climate protection activities. Besides a literature analysis, empirical data was collected through qualitative interviews for this study. Two different surveys were undertaken: one with international tour operators that are already active in climate protection and one with tour operators in Namibia. The interviewed companies all used carbon offsetting by either managing an own project to compensate emissions or by cooperating with an offsetting agency. The choice seemed to be founded in each company's capacity and resources as well as in their basic philosophy. Forestry projects as self-managed offsetting projects were clearly preferred. It was identified that pivotal factors for choosing forestry projects were accessibility for trav...

For the developing world, the impacts of climate change - from sea level rise and more potent and erratic precipitation patterns to rapid deglaciation - are becoming an increasingly frightening reality. Adaptation planning has thus become critical for policymakers in developing countries as these impacts begin to have serious detrimental economic and social implications. Due to a lack of data in many regions, the difficulty of scaling down global circulation models to the country level, and the relative nascence of adaptation theory and policy, however, there is little guidance as to what interventions are likely to be most effective, especially in post-conflict developing countries that face a number of institutional capacity constraints due to years of instability. Focusing on one such highly vulnerable country, this analysis assesses the challenges facing effective adaptation in Nepal and offers recommendations for policy makers moving forward.

V.), language: English, abstract: Brazil is confronted with a high risk of vulnerability to climate change, not least due to its fragile, biologically diverse ecosystems. Taking into account its size in geographic, demographic and economic dimensions, the adaptation to climate change problems becomes highly complex. Changing rainfall patterns will mean poorer water resources and a reduced water supply. Agriculture will be affected, exacerbating the risk of famines. Less rain will also affect the hydropower supply which provides more than 80 per cent of the electricity Brazil generates. Floods, which are already a serious problem for various regions, may increase.Given abundant natural resources, Brazil started early to establish its energy sector largely on renewables. Therefore, in terms of mitigation Brazil has been doing very well. According to a research taking out by the NGO GermanWatch, that analyzed the efforts made by 56 countries being responsible for over 90 percent of CO2 emissions, Brazil is found at rank 8 (GermanWatch, 2008). But the country still needs to assess its vulnerability to climate change so it can prepare for the unavoidable effects of climate change and support policy decisions on how to adapt to the inevitable impacts. Soil type and irrigation systems could play an important role in determination of yield losses under climate change conditions. This concept is tackled in order to shed a light on the importance of developing a strategy to reduce climate change risk on wheat and maize. Wheat was grown in eight sites and maize was grown in five sites. CropSyst model was calibrated and validated and two climate change scenarios were incorporated in the model. The model was run and the effect of climate change was assessed. The results revealed that the yield of both crops will be reduced under climate change. The percentage of yield reduction depended upon the location of the experimental site, soil type and irrigation system. High yield losses could occur in the Middle of Egypt, compared with the North of Egypt. Furthermore, growing these crops in sandy soil and under surface irrigation will increase yield losses.

The quantitative assessment of the impact of climate change on water availability and water resources management requires knowledge of climate, hydro(geo)logical and water resources models, and particularly the relationships between each of them. This book brings together world experts on each of these aspects, distilling each complex topic into concise and easy to understand chapters, in which both the uses and limitations of modelling are explored. The book concludes with a set of case studies using real-life examples to illustrate the steps required and the problems that can be faced in assessing the potential impacts of climate change on water resource systems. For students, scientists, engineers and decision-makers alike, this book provides an invaluable and critical look at the information that is provided by climate models, and the ways it is used in modelling water systems. A key focus is the exploration of how uncertainties may accrue at each stage of an impacts assessment, and the reliability of the resulting information. The book is a practical guide to understanding the opportunities and pitfalls in the quantitative assessment of climate change impacts and adaptation in the water resource sector.

Climate change is a significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods ranging from decades to millions of years. There are a number of reasons for global climate change, examples of which include the increased intensity of solar energy or the cyclicality of Earth's temperatures, volcanism, oceanic circulation cycles, biosphere impact, ultraviolet radiation variability, reflectivity, rotational variation, solar systemic changes, galaxy positional variability, albedo, human influence and so on. The present research analyse on the impact of climate change on major crops in Tamil Nadu. It is observed from the study more that there is no impact of climate change on major crops. The major crops present a very little change in the productivity due to change in climate. Their co-efficient of variations are more or less uniform except for cotton the variation in cotton is observed in the latter half of the period of study. Its rise in productivity may due to the adoption of new technology in cultivation and the use of modern implements in agriculture. Thus climate change has no direct impact of major crops.

This exploratory study examined the sociological process of Nature Based Tourism (NBT) institutions' adaptation to climate change, in 7 Village Development Committees of the Mustang district, a popular destination in the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA), Nepal. In particular, the study investigated the social resilience and adaptive governance capacities of the institutions responsible in operating tourism services, business and managing tourism resources in the study area. The analytical and methodological approach used in the study included sphere (a dynamic social space concept), quality of governance, integrative institutional adaptation assessment frameworks and case study action research method.Institutional social resilience capacities are found to be reliant on socio-political construction of adaptation knowledge and power, produced as a result of several influencing factors. Most important ones include: site and institutions specific political, economic and environmental dispositions, the associated processes of knowledge constructions and volition action, and the social relationships and interaction of the institutions operating within the study area. Adaptive governance capacities hinge on the institutional arrangements, the procedural aspects of adaptation governance and the governmentality. These are reflective of the diverse legal frameworks, the interiority perspective of the decision making and governance practices of the NBT institutions.

Climate change poses one of the greatest challenges for human society in the twenty-first century, yet there is a major disconnect between our actions to deal with it and the gravity of the threat it implies. In a world where the fate of countries is increasingly intertwined, how should we think about, and accordingly, how should we manage, the types of risk posed by anthropogenic climate change? The problem is multi-faceted, and involves not only technical and policy specific approaches, but also questions of social justice and sustainability. In this volume the editors have assembled a unique range of contributors who together examine the intersection between the science, politics, economics and ethics of climate change. The book includes perspectives from some of the world's foremost commentators in their fields, ranging from leading scientists to political theorists, to high profile policymakers and practitioners. They offer a critical new approach to thinking about climate change, and help express a common desire for a more equitable society and a more sustainable way of life.

Climate change is one of the most serious global challenges of our time. The world community has taken many steps to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases to mitigate climate change. However, the failure of the international community to effectively address climate change has encouraged environmental activists and victims of climate change to take recourse to international as well as national legal systems. In India, the Himalayan-fed rivers, such as the Ganga River, will be seriously affected due to the melting glaciers and changes in rainfall patterns due to climate change. Moreover, climate change can cause a violation of the ‘Right to Life’ enshrined in the Constitution of India. The Indian Supreme Court has taken an active interest in protecting the environment and related rights of the people of India. This Book will shed light on the possible role the Supreme Court could play in addressing climate change issues in India by applying the broad constitutional provisions and the rich environmental jurisprudence developed by it in landmark environmental cases.

It highlights the close link between capitalist industrialization and environmental degradation and explains how this consequently leads to human rights violations. This research tackles human rights approach to climate change with a special focus on international human rights instruments mainly the two international covenants, the ICCPR and the ICESCR, it seeks to understand whether they impose international obligations on states to protect human rights from the adverse effects of climate change and how those imposed duties can be enforced to effectively protect people's rights.Unfortunately, this paper will reach to the conclusion that the existing human rights law does not adequately protect human rights from the lethal threat of climate change, due to the absence of a universally recognized right to a healthy environment, moreover, despite the possibility of the extraterritorial application of the ICESCR, the political will of states to cooperate under the provisions of the covenant to face the issue of climate change seems to be also absent.

Global climate change is one of the most serious and pressing issues facing our planet. Rather than a “silver bullet” or a single study that solves it, the study of global climate change is like a beach, with each contribution a grain of sand, gathered together as a whole to create a big picture, moving the science forward. This new groundbreaking study focuses on the adaptation and tolerance of plants and animal life to the harsh conditions brought on by climate change or global warming. Using the papers collected here, scientists can better understand global climate change, its causes, results, and, ultimately, the future of life on our planet. The first section lays out a methodology and conceptual direction of the work as a whole, covering the modeling, approaches, and the impacts studied throughout the book. The second section focuses on certain hypotheses laid out by the authors regarding how plants and animal life can adapt and survive in extreme environments. The third section compiles a series of ecological experiments and their conclusions, and a final section is dedicated to previous scientific breakthroughs in this field and the scientists who made them. Whether for the scientist in the field, the student, or as a reference, this groundbreaking new work is a must-have. Focusing on a small part of the global climate change “beach,” this “grain of sand” is an extremely important contribution to the scientific literature and a step forward in understanding the problems and potentialities of the issue.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 1,3, University of Potsdam (Chair of International Poilitics), language: English, abstract: The prospects that global climate change will have adverse effects on human societies opened up a discourse about how adaptation should be managed. In order to finance adap-tation measures, the parties of the Kyoto Protocol recently established the Adaptation Fund in 2007. In view of the limited resources that are available for adaptation, scales for the prioritization of countries according to their suspected vulnerability have been developed in the literature. Indicators of vulnerability highlighted within this literature, only reflect the indicators of human development and therefore fail to capture the complex structures of vulnerability. The collective learning approach assumes that vulnerability can be significantly decreased when governance systems adapt to external changes through collective learning processes. The present thesis connects to this notion and therefore assesses the influence of collective learning processes on the vulnerability of the Bangladeshi and Pakistani society towards flood hazards. It does so in order to find a determinant of vulnerability that is able to capture its complexity. Following a case study comparison that is based on a systematic research on primary and secondary literature this study reconfirms that vulnerability can substantiall...

It can be a change in the average weather or a change in the distribution of weather events around an average (for example, greater or fewer extreme weather events). Climate change may be limited to a specific region, or may expand across the whole of earth. Global change occurs over a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. For example, changes in the configuration of the continents occur slowly over millions of years as a result of plate tectonics. As the distribution of land and ocean changes, so do oceanic and atmospheric circulation systems, hence altering earth’s climate.

Climate change is the most serious issue of our generation. It will likely bring sea-level rise displacing millions, lead to the loss of thousands of species, reduce food production and create geopolitical tensions – all by the end of this century. The fact that human-caused climate change is happening is now beyond dispute in the scientific community, yet despite the awful consequences, many people are apathetic.Low-Carbon and Loving It is an ordinary person’s, easy-to-read guide to climate change. The book is divided into two sections. The problem of climate change includes sections on the causes of climate change, its consequences and reasons why we've done so little up to now. Then the solutions, looks at both 'big-picture' and 'small-picture' solutions, including concrete ways for the reader to lead a lower-carbon life. The images, cartoons, ‘Science Geek’ and ‘Myth-busting’ boxes make Low-Carbon and Loving It an enjoyable read. The book gives readers an excellent understanding of climate change and empowers them to start making a personal response. However, Low-carbon and Loving It is also the story of the Delaneys, an ordinary Australian family who have made some extraordinary choices. Mark and his wife have lived much of their working lives in the slums of India, befriending neighbours who struggle to survive day to day. The Delaneys have continued this lifestyle of voluntary simplicity for two decades. Their experience has given them a very differen...

This text examines the impact of climate change on freshwater ecosystems, past, present and future. It especially considers the interactions between climate change and other drivers of change including hydromorphological modification, nutrient loading, acid deposition and contamination by toxic substances using evidence from palaeolimnology, time-series analysis, space-for-time substitution, laboratory and field experiments and process modelling. The book evaluates these processes in relation to extreme events, seasonal changes in ecosystems, trends over decadal-scale time periods, mitigation strategies and ecosystem recovery. The book is also concerned with how aspects of hydrophysical, hydrochemical and ecological change can be used as early indicators of climate change in aquatic ecosystems and it addresses the implications of future climate change for freshwater ecosystem management at the catchment scale. This is an ideal book for the scientific research community, but is also accessible to Masters and senior undergraduate students.
