This study investigates the impact of storyline complexity and language proficiency level on oral performance. The participants were 42 English learners of different proficiency levels. Each participant was asked to narrate two stories (with or without background events) based on two picture stories. They were given each of the picture prompts one at a time and were told that they had 3 minutes to look at each picture prompt and plan for what to say and how to narrate the story. After that, they had 3-4 minutes to tell each story during which time their performance was recorded. The recorded performances were transcribed and coded to measure the complexity, accuracy, and fluency. The results indicated that syntactic complexity of performance was related to the storyline complexity. Greater storyline complexity also helped high-proficiency learners to perform more fluently. However, it had no significant effect on accuracy. The results further revealed that the high-proficient learners outperformed low-proficient learners. The results also showed that no significant interaction effect of storyline complexity and language proficiency level on oral performance was established.

Selected chapters from the German concrete yearbook are now being published in the new English «Beton-Kalender Series» for the benefit of an international audience. Since it was founded in 1906, the Ernst & Sohn «Beton-Kalender» has been supporting developments in reinforced and prestressed concrete. The aim was to publish a yearbook to reflect progress in «ferro-concrete» structures until – as the book's first editor, Fritz von Emperger (1862-1942), expressed it – the «tempestuous development» in this form of construction came to an end. However, the «Beton-Kalender» quickly became the chosen work of reference for civil and structural engineers, and apart from the years 1945-1950 has been published annually ever since. Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a milestone in concrete technology and application. It permits the construction of both more slender and more durable concrete structures with a prolonged service life and thus improved sustainability. This book is a comprehensive overview of UHPC – from the principles behind its production and its mechanical properties to design and detailing aspects. The focus is on the material behaviour of steel fibre-reinforced UHPC. Numerical modelling and detailing of the connections with reinforced concrete elements are featured as well. Numerous examples worldwide – bridges, columns, facades and roofs – are the basis for additional explanations about the benefits of UHPC and how it helps to realise several architectural requirements. The authors are extensively involved in the testing, design, construction and monitoring of UHPC structures. What they provide here is therefore a unique synopsis of the state of the art with a view to practical applications.

Mohanty Ram Prasad Performance Enhancement in Multicore Processors

The growing number of cores increases the demand for a powerful memory subsystem which leads to enhancement in the size of caches in multicore processors. Caches are responsible for giving processing elements a faster, higher bandwidth local memory to work with. This text presents an analysis to study the impact of cache size on performance of Multi-core processors by varying L1 and L2 cache size on the multicore processor with internal network (MPIN) referenced from NIAGRA architecture. The effect of interconnections on the performance of multicore processors has been analyzed and a novel scalable, on-chip interconnection mechanism (INOC) for multicore processors has been proposed. A full system simulator multi2sim has been used to analyze the performance of different proposed architectures using Splash2 benchmark.

I. Manev Social Capital and Strategy Effectiveness: An Empirical Study of Entrepreneurial Ventures in a Transition Economy

Although new ventures’ competitive positioning and their founders’ social networks are both recognized as important in the context of transition economies, not much is known about their multiplicative effect on performance. We build on the strategic management literature and social network theory to develop theoretical predictions about the role of competitive strategies and social capital for entrepreneurial performance. These are tested with survey data from Bulgaria. We find that both the venture’s competitive strategic positioning and the founder’s networking positively influence performance. The hypothesized moderating effect of networking for the relationship between differentiation strategy and performance received only tentative support. Contrary to expectations, we find a negative moderating effect of networking for the relationship of cost leadership with performance. These results suggest that the entrepreneur’s network plays a role in shaping how strategies influence performance by possibly upholding differentiation and deemphasizing cost leadership strategy. Implications for managerial practice and public policy are discussed.

Marcus Wagner Consistency and Credibility.

Consistency and Credibility? identifies in its first part the extent of correlation between actual environmental performance, the use of physical environmental performance indicators and corporate environmental reporting in the paper and electricity industries in Germany and the UK. The results suggest environmental performance is mainly country-related, possibly due to differences in environmental legislation. This implies that any assessment of the relationship between environmental and economic performance of firms needs to be based on actual environmental performance data and cannot take reporting quality or information about the intensity of use of specific tools, such as environmental performance indicators as a proxy variable. The second part of the book therefore analyses the relationship between environmental and economic performance. Based on the results, the book's second part concludes that for firms in environmentally-intensive industries it is difficult to create a positive link between their environmental and economic performance, and that market settings as well as strategy considerations both can have an effect, but situational aspects determine which of these dominates.Consistency and Credibility? provides useful information for practitioners as well as deeper insights for academics about the link of environmental reporting and environmental performance measurement and how this interacts with economic success. It thus reveals valuable strategic insights ...

Martin Engeler The Impact of International Experience on Football Team Performance

International experience is identified as a firm's or a team's resource, to be more precise as a form of tacit knowledge. International experience as a resource is likely to contribute to a firm's or a team's performance. Team managers are assumed to exploit the performance potential of international experience via two distinct mechanisms, namely via resource-picking and capability-building. The aim of this thesis is to identify and illustrate the impact of international experience on the performance of national football teams participating in a major tournament. Descriptive statistics, as well as concrete multiple regression models are developed. Various dependent and independent variables are calculated. Following an extensive description and illustration of the obtained data, two multiple linear regression based models are developed to test five concrete hypotheses relating international experience with performance of football teams. The obtained results render strong support for the hypothesized relationships between three different measures of diversity in international experience inherent in a team and short-term team performance.

Understanding the rheological properties of fresh concrete, the hydration phenomenon of cement responsible for structuration, the relationship between the characteristics of the porous solid obtained and its mechanical performances or resistance to the aggressive penetration requires a complex knowledge of the physicochemistry of reactive porous materials. The development of simple formulation rules therefore requires the assimilation of this knowledge and a good command of the properties of these materials. The purpose of this book is to provide the mix designer with useful knowledge on granular materials and porous materials, which will enable the innovative design of concrete. Topics covered include the characterization of granular materials, the concepts of porosity and specific surface area, and the transport properties (diffusion and permeation) of concrete. Some of these topics are already covered in other general books dedicated to granular or porous materials. The objective here is to bring them together in one book by adapting them for use by concrete specialists. Applications in the form of exercises are offered at the end of each chapter to enable readers to assimilate the theoretical knowledge and to apply such knowledge to concrete problems encountered in civil engineering. Contents 1. Description of Granular Materials, Definitions. 2. Granulometry. 3. Specific Surface Area of Materials. 4. Voids in Granular Materials and the Arrangement of Grains. 5. Voids in Concrete. 6. The Fundamentals of Diffusion. 7. Permeability.

Advances in technology and environmental considerations require the construction industry to use more and more engineered high performance materials. In this study, mechanical properties of high volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete mixes were investigated for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Five HVFA concrete mixes containing class C fly ash up to 80% as replacement for cement were designed and tested. The performance of HVFA concrete mixes were compared with ordinary Portland cement concrete (PCC). In addition, the effects of initial temperature, catalyst and activator contents on the gelling time of two polymer grouts used in various civil infrastructural applications were investigated. Gelling times for the polymer grouts were measured and the curing temperatures for the mixtures were monitored during and after the gelling process. Using artificial neural network (ANN) and nonlinear relation (NLR) models, the compressive strength of concrete, gelling time and maximum curing temperature rise of polymer grouts were investigated.

This issue focuses on connections between performance management and evaluation, a contentious topic at the moment. It does so by placing evaluation and monitoring under the overarching concept of performance management, and then by investigating five complementarities between performance monitoring and measurement on the one hand, and evaluation on the other. These complementarities are: Sequential Informational Organizational Methodical Hierarchical. Several case studies discuss the uses and complementarities of evaluation and performance management in contexts including national and local governments and the work of government, philanthropic foundations, and a direct-service nonprofit agency. These cases illustrate the advantages and pitfalls in utilizing evaluative approaches within the context of performance management. This is the 137th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Evaluation, an official publication of the American Evaluation Association.

So I tried to find out the reason or reasons of this problem. The first probability for this problem was that the difference between on-line and off-line environment influenced the students' performance in an on-line reading comprehension test. The second probability that I have made for this problem was that having a high level of IT literacy had any effect on the performance of students in the on-line reading comprehension test or not. And the last hypothesis for investigating the reason of this problem was that students may have employed inappropriate strategies while they were reading on-line. All these probabilities and hypotheses have led the researcher toward formulating the null hypotheses of this study. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of on-line Reading strategies on the choice of off-line Reading strategies of Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners.

The issue of performance management has not been a popular concept on schools. It seems that performance appraisal or evaluations are widely used terms in assessing the performance of teachers. However, these days the issue of performance management that focuses mainly on the professional development of teachers becomes agenda in most education system. However, limited academic literature exists on how to best-practiced performance management of teachers.Various approaches of performance measurement of teachers have been used and most of them emphasized on controlling mechanisms. Issues like feedback, motivation and communications with teachers in performance appraisal are not areas of attention. This book, therefore, provides distinctly different approaches of Performance evaluation that mainly emphasize on developing the performance of teachers rather than controlling. As a result, five interrelated dimensions of performance management are analyzed. The analysis should help shade some light on the performance management of teachers in Ethiopia, and should be especially useful to professional in education fields, or anyone else who may be interested in school affairs.

Bineshian Hossein Stress Non-uniformity

The mechanical response of concrete/rocks to tension and compression with a special consideration to the effect of bending moment on failure mechanisms is examined in this book. A new technique in strain measurement is developed with application in monitoring of the stability and deformation of underground and surface structures in civil, oil & gas, and mining industries as a substitute for geotechnical/geomechanical instrumentations for practical projects such as tunnels, shafts, caverns, slopes, roads, concrete dams, embankments, boreholes, wells, mine stopes, and open pits. The analytical approach based on the mathematical function of Bineshian strength/failure criterion (2000) led to the development of a new failure criterion, which considers the bending moment generated during compression providing linear and nonlinear envelopes capable of describing most compression and tension test data. New Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) constitutive model parameters are also developed that are applicable to numerical modelling of failure and post-failure response of concrete and rock structures. Empirical Concrete Quality Designation (CQD) is also introduced in this book.

In Somaliland mathematics is performed poorly in secondary schools. In 2010-2014, the mean score of mathematics was 53.95% against 73.72% in Languages, 68.68% in Sciences, and 83.16% in S/Studies. But the influence of personal characteristics of the teacher had not been investigated. Guided by Trait Theory of Personality, the study used a cross sectional research design, on a stratified sample of 350 students and 16 teachers in 10 secondary schools in Borama District, in February of 2014. The study found teacher gender (t [14] = -.276, p = .785), and teacher qualification (F [1, 14] = .578, p = .568) had no significant influence on students' performance. But teacher experience (F [1, 14] = 4.375, p = .022), and self-efficacy (F [1, 14] = 10.790, p = .000) had a significant influence on students' performance. The study concluded that teacher's personal characteristics influence performance of students in mathematics. The study recommends that MoEHS conduct awareness education to change the attitude that mathematics is a male friendly subject; and that an experimental study be done to determine the actual effect of teachers' personal characteristics on the performance of students.

Effect of MW, thermal and/or athermal, is inconclusive, complex, and controversial in literature. Thermal effect causes thermogenic effect while athermal effects are other than heat and such effects reported as somatic effect and/or genetic effect. This study basically deals with the athermal effects and is aimed at investigating the hypothesis that the exposure of microbial cells to MW (low power) may cause athermal effect, which affect on growth of microbes, enzyme activity, and production of exopolysaccharides. Furthermore, we have also checked the effect of different intracellular enzymes on MW treated bacteria. Our study also gives information that MW athermal effects causes changes at genetic level and can be passed on to next generation. There are numerous and increasing applications of MW energy and technology in the industries, in homes, in medical, research institutions etc., and there is greater awareness and concern of the public over the suspected potential health hazards associated with such exposures [ICNIRP Guidelines, 1998]. There is therefore, a need for deeper understanding of the bio-effects of exposure to this radiation. Due to the ease of handing them in lab...

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: Distinction, Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, language: English, abstract: A 2.5D pocket milling is extensively used in aerospace, shipyard, automobile, dies and molds industries. In machining of 2.5D pockets, directional parallel tool-path and contour parallel tool-path are widely used. However, these tool paths significantly limit the machining efficiency. In the present work, an attempt has been made to generate a spiral tool path for machining of 2.5D star-shaped pocket for improving machining efficiency. The spiral tool path is developed using second order elliptic partial differential equation (PDE) and it is free from sharp corners inside the pocket region. Further, the implementation of proposed method is presented on complex non-star-shaped polygon, pocket bounded by free-form curve and pocket with island. The shape of pocket geometry, tool path strategy and various machining parameters (speed, feed rate and depth of cut) affect machining performance. However, the effect of the shape of a pocket geometry and tool path strategy on the performance of pocket machining is scarcely reported. Hence, an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of aspect ratio, feed rate and tool path strategies (zig-zag, spiral and contour parallel) on tool path length, cutting time, percentage utilization of a tool and average surface roughness in machinin...

Meghan Sutherland The Flip Wilson Show

When The Flip Wilson Show debuted on NBC in 1970, the major legislative victories of the civil rights movement had been won, but the broadcast airwaves were far from integrated. A handful of shows featured black leading characters, but none had quite reached the top spot of the Nielsen ratings. By 1971, however, Wilson’s "old-fashioned" comedy-variety hour was a bonafide hit, and in January 1972 Time magazine declared Wilson "TV’s First Black Superstar." In this volume, Meghan Sutherland examines how The Flip Wilson Show succeeded in the volatile racial and economic milieu of the early 1970s and how its success shaped the prevailing codes of black performance and political discourse on television. In particular, Sutherland examines the ambivalence that pervades discussions of Wilson’s outlandish performance style—discussions that generally treat the question of whether his characters lampooned or simply reprised the stereotypes of minstrelsy as a problem for reception studies. Sutherland argues that this ambivalence was actually the basis of the show’s wide appeal, and must thus be understood as an aesthetic strategy rather than as a mere effect of different viewers’ interpretations. Along these same lines, she asserts that Wilson used the non-naturalistic aesthetics of variety performance in order to mount a critique of "realist" race sitcoms of the period, on the one hand, and the discourse of authentic masculinity that accompanied the rise of Black P...

Mayolo Alberto López Castellanos Agent Based Simulation Approach to Assess Supply Chain Complexity and its Impact on Performance

In today's global business environment, the intense competition, the changing and uncertain conditions, and the increasing customer's requirements are challenges for the companies' operational efficiency and profitability. In this context, companies highlight the importance of supply chain design and its holistic understanding in order to achieve and sustain competitive strengths. This book analyses supply chains as complex systems, whose performance is characterized by their structural configuration and emergent behaviour. The author analyses the supply chain structure and behaviour within the scope of complexity science. He focuses on supply chain complexity by means of a literature review and an empirical research, which give insights into the impact of complexity on supply chain performance. Moreover, within this book the supply chain is modelled as a complex system by considering the non-linear relationships of its geo-positioned elements. Finally, an agent based model is developed for the generic supply chain simulation, which allows assessing the impact of complexity on supply chain performance and characterizing the behaviour of supply chain designs. The materials presented in this book contribute to the understanding and management of supply chain complexity. This work complements existing complexity frameworks with a holistic analysis of complexity's impact on the performance of supply chain participants and their network. The findings of this work a...

İpek Abasıkeleş, M.Fatih Akay PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF DIRECTORY-BASED CACHE COHERENCE PROTOCOLS

The performance of three directory-based cache- coherence protocols; strict request-response, intervention forwarding and reply forwarding are evaluated via simulation on the SOME-Bus, which is a fiber-optic interconnection network supporting DSM. The simulated system contains 64 nodes, each of which has a processor, cache controller, directory controller and output channel. Simulations have been conducted for each protocol to measure average processor utilization and average network latency for varying values of DSM parameters such as the ratio of the mean channel service time to mean thread run time (T/R), probability of a cache block being in modified state {P(M)}, the fraction of write misses {P(W)} and under different traffic patterns. The results reveal that the performance of all protocols decreases under all traffic patterns as P(W),P(M) or T/R increases. The effect of P(W) on the performance of the protocols reduces as P(M) increases. Reply forwarding performs the best for high P(M) values, intervention forwarding yields the best performance for low P(M) and high P(W) values and strict request-response is the best protocol under hot-region (HR) traffic.
