Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,7, University of Göttingen, language: English, abstract: The present paper compares the representations of "discourse particles" in the German and English language. In the first part of this study Zimmermann´s definition of the German "discourse particles" is outlined and complemented with results from studies by Thurmair (1989), Bublitz (1978), Waltereit (2001) and others that also worked on German discourse particles and put in contrast to concepts of words carrying discourse function in the English language. The study thereby focuses on the prototypical group of words that assume discourse function in the two languages, German modal particles and English discourse markers and illustrates its findings with two of their most prototypical representatives, German wohl and English actually. Both groups are compared in terminology, categorisation and in their morphological, semantic, pragmatic, and syntactic features. Switching from synchronic to diachronic perspective, the study also traces their historical development and it is shown, how these functions developed. In course of this study, it is briefly referred to less prototypical ways of expressing discourse function and it is detected, that there are German particles, that seem to resemble English discourse markers and vice versa. The essential features of distinction the particles are size, shape and surface roughness. The classical characterization of particles by using size analysis and geometric shape factors often cannot distinguish the valid differences between individual powders. By means of computer aided-image analysis, some parameters (which are used in estimation the surface roughness, shape and size of particles) can be determined. Detachment process of particles from the gas-liquid interface is a phenomena with important effects on interfacial processes such as flotation. An approach of the determination of detachment forces by a centrifuge method is described. To examine the effect of particle shape and surface roughness in the detachment process, centrifugal experiments on materials with different surface chemistry are carried out. A new approach for the problem of determination the theoretical centrifugal detachment force is introduced. This fundamental includes all forces affected on a particle and it avoides all errors with previous theories. To study the effect of surface roughness and shape of particle on its floatability, flotation tests using a modified Hallimond tube are studied.

The moving grates, or travelling grates, are widely used in industries. In this book, the physical and chemical phenomena in the gas-solid systems on the moving grates were simulated and discussed. The program LEPOL simulated the drying, pre-heating and partial calcination of limestone particles on a travelling LEPOL-Grate, which was built in front of a lime rotary kiln. The purpose of the research was to show how to decrease the average or peak temperature of the hot gas when it reaches the LEPOL-Grate, in order to protect the grate material from overheating. Another program, CLINKER, simulated the rapid cooling down of clinker particles on a similar moving grate. The aim of the investigation was to find some methods to prevent the fluidisation of smaller clinker particles, which limits the product throughput.

This monograph studies the implications that institutions of direct democracy have on the happiness of a society, in a framework where the authority is interested both in implementing its ideal policy and in its re-election. It is shown that, in cases where authorities have full information about the social distribution of opinions, political activity drives a positive measure of authority types to choose the socially preferred policy. It is, also, shown that if the authority possesses a relatively low level of information about the distribution of opinions of the society, referenda in a great variety of cases offer a high level of happiness to the society and, thus, a high re-election probability to the authority. When the authority possesses full information about the distribution of opinions of the society, and the society is unaware of this fact, referenda also have a positive effect on social happiness and sequentially to the re-election probability of the authority. The optimal actions of the authority are described for the different combinations of the type of the authority and the specific distribution of opinions of the society.

The study was conducted in Abijata Shala Lakes national park from September 2017 to February 2018. Three sites were selected: tourism destination site, tourism inaccessible site and local livelihood site. Wild animals distribution and abundance, were determined using line transect for mammals and point count for birds. Five selected mammals and six shore birds that frequently visited by tourist were selected. One-way ANOVA was used to compare the mean difference of wild animal's abundance between sampling site. The abundance and distribution of species in site were variable. The population mean was high in nature intact area for mammals: there were high in mean number of population of mammals.

We developed a novel treatment for the problem of the diffusive collision dynamics of colloidal nano- and macromolecular-particles on the surface boundaries of mesopores. A theoretical and numerical model was intensively developed to treat a number of basic ingredients in the simulation algorithms, i) the Brownian motion, ii) hydrodynamic flow, and iii) molecular dynamics for the restitution of the nano-particles due to their diffusive collisions at the surface boundaries, These, and other ingredients for the numerical codes, are designed to calculate the PDF distributions for the colloidal particles, under equilibrium dynamics.Furthermore, we also deal with the mechanisms leading to the adhesion of these particles under different and sometimes conflicting influences of non-equilibrium conditions in the hydrodynamic flow, due to the diffusive collisions of the particles and to the attraction that Hamaker forces exercise on these particles when they are in neighborhood of surface.

Reduction of angle of internal friction with increasing stress level of sandy soil is widely recognized and noticed by many researchers. There are limited studies on the effect of this reduction on bearing capacity of piles. This book presents a study of the effect of this reduction on axially loaded bored piles embedded in dense and medium sand by using finite element approach. The soil modeled using a hyperbolic soil model with an empirical equation to account for the reduction of angle of internal friction with increasing stress level while the concrete bored pile modeled as a linear elastic material. Investigating the effect of the stress level on behavior of piles, bearing capacity factor Nq, and distribution of shear stresses in soil-pile interface along the pile shaft were made during this work by pass through a wide range of stresses by using piles with dimensions starting from laboratory dimensions and goes towards field dimensions with an embedment ratio L/D range (15, 20, 25, 30, and 40). Also, two models to estimate pile capacity in medium and dense sand are developed in this work using statistical techniques based on finite element analysis results.

Polyurethanes are versatile materials with variety of applications. The major application of polyurethanes is polyurethane foam. In polyurethane foams there are many types and this work is carried out on synthesis and characterization of visco-elastic polyurethane foam which is the sub type of flexible polyurethane foam. Visco-elastic foam have unique characteristics than other type of foams and due to its variety of applications it is now a days capturing the whole commercial applications of flexible foam. Due to its importance and large number of applications this research is carried out to synthesize visco-elastic polyurethane foam on lab scale and to study different methods for synthesis of visco-elatic polyurethane foam. The objective of this work was to synthesize visco-elastic polyurethane foam and then study different characterization techniques for the caharacterization of visco-elastic foam.

That concept is that the fundamental particle in the universe is a Dark Matter (DM) particle, and our matter consists of excited DM particles. Precognition is a form of psi, whereby the future influences the present. We conducted a study to test if strong mental activation through high-arousal visual stimuli caused smokers to exhibit precognition and influence a quantum random distribution in their favor. A Bayesian one sample t test revealed a Bayes Factor BF10 = 12.56, indicating strong evidence for the display of precognition. We found no gender differences and no statistically significant influence of nicotine dependency or smoking addiction on precognition. We outline several explanatory models of quantum mechanics and discuss limitations of the study as well as possible implications of psi-phenomena.

Document from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Chemical Engineering, The University of Malaya, language: English, abstract: Granular palm shell activated carbon (AC) was impregnated separately with monoethanolamine (MEA) and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) to improve its natural capacity and selectivity for carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorption. The total surface area, micropore volume, as well as the heterogeneity of the impregnated AC particles was considerably reduced due to impregnation. CO2 intake of impregnated 500 μm AC particles improved significantly and adsorptive capacity of 500 μm MEA-impregnated AC particles improved by 172 % and 44 % comparing to non-impregnated and AMP-impregnated AC particles respectively. Solid state amine stoichiometric results indicated that adsorption capacity of unhindered amine (MEA) is higher than that of hindered amine (AMP) by 50 % contrary to liquid amines standard stoichiometry. Exhausted AMPimpregnated beds were regenerated by sweeping at room temperature with stream of pure nitrogen (N2) flowing at 60 ml/min for 4 hours. Heating up to 75 °C was required to regenerate exhausted MEA-impregnated beds. Increasing feed gas flow rate has adverse effect on breakthrough time more than increasing bed operating temperature. Breakthrough time was utilized to evaluate the performance of the different adsorption beds.

This study investigates the impact of storyline complexity and language proficiency level on oral performance. The participants were 42 English learners of different proficiency levels. Each participant was asked to narrate two stories (with or without background events) based on two picture stories. They were given each of the picture prompts one at a time and were told that they had 3 minutes to look at each picture prompt and plan for what to say and how to narrate the story. After that, they had 3-4 minutes to tell each story during which time their performance was recorded. The recorded performances were transcribed and coded to measure the complexity, accuracy, and fluency. The results indicated that syntactic complexity of performance was related to the storyline complexity. Greater storyline complexity also helped high-proficiency learners to perform more fluently. However, it had no significant effect on accuracy. The results further revealed that the high-proficient learners outperformed low-proficient learners. The results also showed that no significant interaction effect of storyline complexity and language proficiency level on oral performance was established.

There were differences in the response to self-stimulation based on the type of pain, somatic or visceral. The effect of both VS-S and CS-S outlasted stimulation. The results must be viewed cautiously based on the small sample size. This is the first human study to demonstrate a difference in the effect of neurostimulation on analgesia and pain thresholds. This study indicates that not all chronic pain, even when located in the same area of the body, is the same. It is apparent that more research is needed to differentiate the effect of stimulation-produced analgesia on various types of chronic pain.

For the partitions of the building one cannot ignore bricks due to its lesser cost and flexible use. These walls are subjected to lateral loads induced by wind and inertia load produced by horizontal ground motions during an earthquake. An alternate to reinforced cement concrete water tank is a brick wall water tank, a permanent fixture of every residential house due to negligible water supply from municipal corporation. As a solution to this practical problem an effort has been made to investigate the effect of bond on the strength of brick wall subjected to lateral load. Wall panels have been constructed using English & Flemish bond. On the application of lateral load upto ultimate state the experimental study reveals some good results. Load deflection response indicates a linear relationship upto first crack load. Wall behaves elastically upto first crack, and on further increase in load due to the difference in stiffness of masonry unit and mortar (low tensile bond strength) the crack propagated and at ultimate state crushing took place followed by large central deflections.

Hence in this research a new spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of mercury in liquid samples using silver nano-particles by the process of amalgamation. This research was dually emphasized on the production of uniformly sized and stable nano-particles of silver as well as the determination of mercury by them. Changes in the spectral characters of silver nano-particles by the addition of mercury were of the basic interest. Fish samples were sampled for the mercury content from Local Street and amalgamation was carried out. Results found out to be out of limits as per FDA and EPA. The current Lab-Scale work can be promoted on larger scale to provide sufficient betterment in the quality of fish food.

The book is devoted to a theoretical study of laser assisted Compton scattering on the ground state of a hydrogenlike atom. Based on analytic formula, valid for any fixed polarization of the laser, and derived by the author using the nonrelativistic Coulomb-Volkov function for the final electron, one presents as graphs the results of numerical calculations for the electron energy spectrum at a variety of fixed photon-electron configurations and for the distribution of electrons in the case in which the scattered photon is not detected. Useful appendices accompany the main text. Results could be useful in the context in which the Compton effect is the basic process used in designing sources of intense high frequency electromagnetic radiation, dedicated to many applications in science, technology and medicine. The fascinating progress in laser and electron detection technology will continue to stimulate detailed theoretical studies of photon-bound electron interaction.

Effect of MW, thermal and/or athermal, is inconclusive, complex, and controversial in literature. Thermal effect causes thermogenic effect while athermal effects are other than heat and such effects reported as somatic effect and/or genetic effect. This study basically deals with the athermal effects and is aimed at investigating the hypothesis that the exposure of microbial cells to MW (low power) may cause athermal effect, which affect on growth of microbes, enzyme activity, and production of exopolysaccharides. Furthermore, we have also checked the effect of different intracellular enzymes on MW treated bacteria. Our study also gives information that MW athermal effects causes changes at genetic level and can be passed on to next generation.There are numerous and increasing applications of MW energy and technology in the industries, in homes, in medical, research institutions etc., and there is greater awareness and concern of the public over the suspected potential health hazards associated with such exposures [ICNIRP Guidelines, 1998]. Stress, strain and displacement field are determined using the extended finite elements method (X-FEM).
