Online and blended learning requires the reconstruction of instructor and learner roles, relations, and practices in many aspects. Assessment becomes an important issue in non-traditional learning environments. Assessment literacy, i.e., understanding assessment and assessment strategies, is critical for both instructors and students in creating online and blended environments that are effective for teaching and learning. Instructors need to identify and implement assessment strategies and methods appropriate to online or blended learning. This includes an understanding of the potential of a variety of technology tools for monitoring student learning and improving their teaching effectiveness. From the students’ perspective, good assessment practices can show them what is important to learn and how they should approach learning; hence, engaging them in goal-oriented and self-regulatory cognitions and behaviors. The book targets instructors, instructional designers, and educational leaders who are interested in understanding and implementing either summative or formative assessment in online and blended learning environments. This book will assist the relevant audience in the theory and practice of assessment in online and blended learning environments. Providing both a research and practice perspective, this book can help instructors make the connection between pedagogy and technology tools to maximize their teaching and student learning. The second edition of Effective Grading—the book that has become a classic in the field—provides a proven hands-on guide for evaluating student work and offers an in-depth examination of the link between teaching and grading. Authors Barbara E. Walvoord and Virginia Johnson Anderson explain that grades are not isolated artifacts but part of a process that, when integrated with course objectives, provides rich information about student learning, as well as being a tool for learning itself. The authors show how the grading process can be used for broader assessment objectives, such as curriculum and institutional assessment. This thoroughly revised and updated edition includes a wealth of new material including: Expanded integration of the use of technology and online teaching A sample syllabus with goals, outcomes, and criteria for student work New developments in assessment for grant-funded projects Additional information on grading group work, portfolios, and service-learning experiences New strategies for aligning tests and assignments with learning goals Current thought on assessment in departments and general education, using classroom work for program assessments, and using assessment data systematically to «close the loop» Material on using the best of classroom assessment to foster institutional assessment New case examples from colleges and universities, including community colleges «When the first edition of Effective Grading came out, it quickly became the go-to book on evaluating student learning. This second edition, especially with its extension into evaluating the learning goals of departments and general education programs, will make it even more valuable for everyone working to improve teaching and learning in higher education.» —L. Dee Fink, author, Creating Significant Learning Experiences «Informed by encounters with hundreds of faculty in their workshops, these two accomplished teachers, assessors, and faculty developers have created another essential text. Current faculty, as well as graduate students who aspire to teach in college, will carry this edition in a briefcase for quick reference to scores of examples of classroom teaching and assessment techniques and ways to use students' classroom work in demonstrating departmental and institutional effectiveness.» —Trudy W. In this era of increasing pressure on higher education institutions for accountability, Planning and Assessment in Higher Education is an essential resource for college and university leaders and staff charged with the task of providing evidence of institutional effectiveness. Michael F. Middaugh, a noted expert in the field, shows how colleges and universities can successfully measure student learning and institutional effectiveness and use these results to create more efficient communications with both internal and external constituencies as well as promote institutional effectiveness to support student learning. «How can the assessment of institutional effectiveness be used to provide a solid foundation for planning? Middaugh has crafted a comprehensive, practical guide that also explains what accrediting agencies really want and need to know about these topics.» —Elizabeth H. Sibolski, executive vice president, Middle States Commission on Higher Education «Only Michael Middaugh, the unquestioned national leader in this field, could write such a lucid overview of how to make institutional assessment and planning really work as a tool rather than as a tedious requirement. He helped invent and shape the focus of national assessment rubrics and now offers his insights into how to make them work for your institution.» —John C. Cavanaugh, chancellor, Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education «Middaugh provides extremely helpful and practical guidance and insights on how colleges and universities can use assessment tools and frameworks to improve both academic programs and administrative operations. American higher education needs a major reframing of student learning outcomes assessment Dynamic changes are underway in American higher education. New providers, emerging technologies, cost concerns, student debt, and nagging doubts about quality all call out the need for institutions to show evidence of student learning. From scholars at the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education presents a reframed conception and approach to student learning outcomes assessment. The authors explain why it is counterproductive to view collecting and using evidence of student accomplishment as primarily a compliance activity. Today's circumstances demand a fresh and more strategic approach to the processes by which evidence about student learning is obtained and used to inform efforts to improve teaching, learning, and decision-making. Whether you're in the classroom, an administrative office, or on an assessment committee, data about what students know and are able to do are critical for guiding changes that are needed in institutional policies and practices to improve student learning and success. Use this book to: Understand how and why student learning outcomes assessment can enhance student accomplishment and increase institutional effectiveness Shift the view of assessment from being externally driven to internally motivated Learn how assessment results can help inform decision-making Use assessment data to manage change and improve student success Gauging student learning is necessary if institutions are to prepare students to meet the 21st century needs of employers and live an economically independent, civically responsible life. For assessment professionals and educational leaders, Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education offers both a compelling rationale and practical advice for making student learning outcomes assessment more effective and efficient.

This book identifies the current role and effectiveness of e-learning and its key issues in an industrial context. The first objective is to identify the role of e-learning, particularly in staff training and executive education, where e-learning (online, computer-based or videoconferencing learning) has made significant impacts and contributions to several organisations such as the Royal Bank of Scotland, Cisco and Cap Gemini Earnst and Young. The second objective of this research is to understand the effectiveness of e-learning. This can be classified into two key issues: (1) methods of e-learning implementations; and (2) factors influencing effective and ineffective e-learning implementations. From Chapter Five, a proposed way is to retain the decentralised implementation while co-ordinating at a centralised way. Another learning point is about interactive learning (IL), the combination of both e-learning and face-to-face learning. IL has been making contributions to several organisations, including the increase in motivation, learning interests and also efficiency.

What could be more important to college and university faculty than teaching well? Indeed, in the past several years researchers have not only investigated key variables influencing teaching and learning, they also have applied empirical findings to develop and refine new systems of teaching and learning—approaches that provide the infrastructure for the day-to-day organization and assessment of student learning over the course of an academic term. This volume presents an overview of these systems and offers an assessment of the effectiveness of each relative to both student learning and enjoyment of the learning process. Written by leading teaching scholars, these systems include the lecture, problem-based learning, case studies, team-based learning, interteaching, service-learning, just-in-time teaching, Web-based computer-aided personalized instruction, and online teaching. Each contributor outlines the basic principles of a system, describes how to implement the system, and reviews the system’s overall effectiveness. This is the 128th volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report New Directions for Teaching and Learning, which offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

The essential e-learning design manual, updated with the latest research, design principles, and examples e-Learning and the Science of Instruction is the ultimate handbook for evidence-based e-learning design. Since the first edition of this book, e-learning has grown to account for at least 40% of all training delivery media. However, digital courses often fail to reach their potential for learning effectiveness and efficiency. This guide provides research-based guidelines on how best to present content with text, graphics, and audio as well as the conditions under which those guidelines are most effective. This updated fourth edition describes the guidelines, psychology, and applications for ways to improve learning through personalization techniques, coherence, animations, and a new chapter on evidence-based game design. The chapter on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning introduces three forms of cognitive load which are revisited throughout each chapter as the psychological basis for chapter principles. A new chapter on engagement in learning lays the groundwork for in-depth reviews of how to leverage worked examples, practice, online collaboration, and learner control to optimize learning. The updated instructor's materials include a syllabus, assignments, storyboard projects, and test items that you can adapt to your own course schedule and students. Co-authored by the most productive instructional research scientist in the world, Dr. Richard E. Mayer, this book distills copious e-learning research into a practical manual for improving learning through optimal design and delivery. Get up to date on the latest e-learning research Adopt best practices for communicating information effectively Use evidence-based techniques to engage your learners Replace popular instructional ideas, such as learning styles with evidence-based guidelines Apply evidence-based design techniques to optimize learning games e-Learning continues to grow as an alternative or adjunct to the classroom, and correspondingly, has become a focus among researchers in learning-related fields. New findings from research laboratories can inform the design and development of e-learning. However, much of this research published in technical journals is inaccessible to those who actually design e-learning material. By collecting the latest evidence into a single volume and translating the theoretical into the practical, e-Learning and the Science of Instruction has become an essential resource for consumers and designers of multimedia learning.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Health Science, California State University, Northridge, language: English, abstract: This project focused on implementing a needs assessment to measure baseline knowledge of college females on fertility awareness and to see if there was an interest for a curriculum addressing fertility awareness. The sample consisted of one hundred and fifty-seven (N = 157) college females who were given a needs assessment on their knowledge of the menstrual cycle, self-efficacy in interpreting fertility biomarkers, and desire for educational opportunities in fertility awareness. Statistical analysis showed a small correlation between an increase in age and self-efficacy in fertility awareness and Hispanic/Latinos scored significantly higher than Black/African Americans on the self-efficacy scale. The results of the needs assessment also indicated a desire for an educational opportunity in fertility awareness. Four content experts validated the curriculum that was created from the needs assessment, using a 10-point Likert scale. Future research needs to focus on racial and ethnic discrepancies on knowledge of the menstrual cycle and health education programs need to focus on menstrual and fertility awareness education for adult women.

McInerney, The Hong Kong Institute of EducationAssessment for learning is meant to engage, motivate, and enable students to do better intheir learning. However, how students themselves perceive assessments (both high-stakesqualifications and low-stakes monitoring) is not well understood. This volume collectsresearch studies from Europe, North and South America, Asia, and New Zealand thathave deliberately focused on how students in primary, secondary, and tertiary education conceive of, experience, understand, and evaluate assessments. Assessment for learning has assumed that formative assessments and classroompractices would be an unqualified success in terms of student learning outcomes. Making use of a variety of qualitativelyinterpreted focus groups, observations, and interviews and factor-analytic survey methods, the studies collected in thisvolume raise doubts as to the validity of this formulation. We commend this volume to readers hoping to stimulate theirown thinking and research in the area of student assessment. We believe the chapters will challenge researchers, policymakers, teacher educators, and instructors as to how assessment for learning can be implemented.

This is the 2nd edition of my previous book, "Self-Assessment for MRCP part II; 135 Best of Many Questions with Photographic Materials for MRCP(UK) and MRCP(I) Part II Written Exams", which was published in 2009. This book is a rapid self-assessment tool. There are many clues and tricks on how to analyze and answer certain questions. Each chapter does not contain more than 15 questions; it's like a mock paper/exam. I have included many data interpretations and photographic materials. Each question has an objective. Try to target that objective. In writing this book, I tried my best to include the commonest examination themes that have been encountered recently. Good luck!

Reading classes are based on active learning strategies. Active learning strategies have no purpose if they are not effective in conveying the necessary skills. This research focused on the assessment of the effectiveness of the developmental reading classes at one large Midwestern community college. Three measures, passing rates of the reading classes, the passing rates of a credit class (reading intensive), and the persistence of students who had begun their academic careers in the developmental reading classes, were used to gage the effectiveness of the two developmental reading classes, ENG001 and ENG002. ENG 001 students read below ninth grade upon entering. ENG 002 students read below twelfth grade. Completion of the reading program put these under-prepared students at the same level as non-developmental college freshman.

The book is based on own experiences of the author. These experiences were gathered in the past, during author's work as a teacher of mathematics and computer science, and recently, during her work at the university as an academic teacher who still cooperates with practicing teachers. The most important thing that author wants to pass by this book is: computers and multimedia are the tools that should help to teach students thinking: not treating computer only as a source of fun, but as a tool that can support thinking, discovering knowledge and can give a feeling of happiness that comes from successful learning. Also the book is some kind of invitation to cooperation referred to all Readers who are interested in the research on effectiveness (or other aspects) of multimedia-supported education.

Praise for The Learning Self «In this age of self-help, the 'self' is a term thrown around with abandon. For educators, the notion of self-directed learning is a key concept. Yet the notion of self is deeply problematic, even contentious. The world has needed a book that deftly and accessibly takes the idea of the self and looks at it in a sympathetic but critical way. Mark Tennant has written that book. It is a highly readable and fascinating deconstruction of this key idea that will be appreciated by all helping professionals.»—Stephen Brookfield, Distinguished University Professor, University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis-St. Paul «An excellent contribution to the field! This is a clearly written text that takes the reader far beyond much contemporary work in psychology and learning. It opens up new ways of thinking about the learning self and provides a significant contribution to transformative learning theory. This is a book that should be read by every student of psychology, learning, and the self.»—Peter Jarvis, professor emeritus of continuing education, University of Surrey, United Kingdom

'Under the Flamboyant Tree: an exploration of learning' is based on research into the experiences of 10 teachers, teaching assistants and a Local Authority officer participating in a one-week Teachers’ International Professional Development visit to South Africa. Three related themes are explored. In the first concepts of ‘deep’ and ‘surface’ learning (Marton and Säljö (1976)) and ‘profound’ learning (West-Burnham and Coates (2005)) are investigated to look at the nature of the learning experienced by the research participants. The second theme looks at how a sensation becomes learning and offers a four-stage model outlining the movement from experience to deep or profound learning. In the final theme the nature of continuing professional development (CPD) is explored and a tension identified between a declared aspiration for autonomous, self-directed professionals and the current emphasis on measurement and audit.

Learning practitioners have, for too long, been struggling to shift the perception of learning and development from a function that is a cost to the organization, to that of a function that is central to delivering value-added activities for the organization. The ability to deliver a return on investment is not about investing in good evaluation mechanisms, although this is important. It is imperative that the learning practitioner owns the numbers and works with financial metrics in order to bid for adequate resources and support the organization's strategic ambitions. This book offers a brief overview of both a theoretical and a practical framework. The theoretical underpinning provides an examination of how the theories and research about human and group dynamic processes and self-renewal can be utilized in intervention design. The emphasis is on the "self-renewal" ability of the individual and the facilitation of the movement of groups to improve the health and effectiveness of organizations in a sustainable way.
