Human Beta Defensins (hBDs) are a class of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that play an important role both in innate and adaptive immunity: they kill bacteria, viruses and fungi and exert chemotaxis against lymphocytes and monocytes. Thanks to their properties, hBDs represent a target to develop therapeutic molecules. Previously, Scudiero et al. synthesized the wild type hBD1, hBD3 and designed analogs selecting the sequences crucial for the activity. In the present study, we tested the possibility to find a new defensin analog with enhanced properties. The new peptide has the following features: shorter total sequence; presence of the C-terminus portion of hBD3; presence of inner portion of hBD1. We perform antibacterial and antiviral tests on E. coli, P. aeruginosa, E. faecalis and simplex virus type 1. In addition, we investigated two pharmacological properties of these peptides: the stability in human serum and the cytotoxic effects on human cells. Finally, in order to investigate whether defensins interact with human epithelial cells, we labeled peptides with NBD fluorochrome and performed confocal microscopy experiments.

It is believed that there is a co-relation between periodontal diseases and systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, smoking and local factors such as drugs.Certain systemic conditions clearly may affect the initiation and progression of gingivitis and Periodontitis. Systemic disorders affecting neutrophils, monocytes/ macrophages and lymphocytes function results in altered production activity of host inflammatory mediators. Hence this current text offers a contemporary guide to explain the mechanism and effects of such diseases on Periodontium.

A thought-provoking exploration of deleterious mutations in the human genome and their effects on human health and wellbeing Despite all of the elaborate mechanisms that a cell employs to handle its DNA with the utmost care, a newborn human carries about 100 new mutations, originated in their parents, about 10 of which are deleterious. A mutation replacing just one of the more than three billion nucleotides in the human genome may lead to synthesis of a dysfunctional protein, and this can be inconsistent with life or cause a tragic disease. Several percent of even young people suffer from diseases that are caused, exclusively or primarily, by pre?]existing and new mutations in their genomes, including both a wide variety of genetically simple Mendelian diseases and diverse complex diseases such as birth anomalies, diabetes, and schizophrenia. Milder, but still substantial, negative effects of mutations are even more pervasive. As of now, we possess no means of reducing the rate at which mutations appear spontaneously. However, the recent flood of genomic data made possible by next-generation methods of DNA sequencing, enabled scientists to explore the impacts of deleterious mutations on humans with previously unattainable precision and begin to develop approaches to managing them. Written by a leading researcher in the field of evolutionary genetics, Crumbling Genome reviews the current state of knowledge about deleterious mutations and their effects on humans for those in the biological sciences and medicine, as well as for readers with only a general scientific literacy and an interest in human genetics. Provides an extensive introduction to the fundamentals of evolutionary genetics with an emphasis on mutation and selection Discusses the effects of pre-existing and new mutations on human genotypes and phenotypes Provides a comprehensive review of the current state of knowledge in the field and considers crucial unsolved problems Explores key ethical, scientific, and social issues likely to become relevant in the near future as the modification of human germline genotypes becomes technically feasible Crumbling Genome is must-reading for students and professionals in human genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, evolutionary biology, and biological anthropology. It is certain to have great appeal among all those with an interest in the links between genetics and evolution and how they are likely to influence the future of human health, medicine, and society.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: A, Birkbeck, University of London, language: English, abstract: This study seeks to address the issue of climate change through a human rights lens by focusing on the causes of climate change and its impacts on both the environment and human rights. It highlights the close link between capitalist industrialization and environmental degradation and explains how this consequently leads to human rights violations. This research tackles human rights approach to climate change with a special focus on international human rights instruments mainly the two international covenants, the ICCPR and the ICESCR, it seeks to understand whether they impose international obligations on states to protect human rights from the adverse effects of climate change and how those imposed duties can be enforced to effectively protect people's rights.Unfortunately, this paper will reach to the conclusion that the existing human rights law does not adequately protect human rights from the lethal threat of climate change, due to the absence of a universally recognized right to a healthy environment, moreover, despite the possibility of the extraterritorial application of the ICESCR, the political will of states to cooperate under the provisions of the covenant to face the issue of climate change seems to be also absent.

Therefore, the SCE assay, a relevant biological response marker for genotoxicity in human biomonitoring studies [PENDZICH et al., 1997] was performed using peripheral lymphocytes, on account of their effortless accessibility [WILKOSCY and RYNARD, 1990].Duplicate lymphocyte cell cultures, of each participant, were incubated for 72 h (37°C, 5% CO2) according to a short-term human lymphocyte cell culture. For each participant at least 50 metaphases, containing 43-46 chromosomes were scored, to evaluate the mean SCE frequency. The number of SCEs per cell was calculated to a chromosome set of a normal diploid human cell, containing 46 chromosomes. In the present study the alteration of SCE frequency, 48 h pre- and 24 h postrace was evaluated. As an additional endpoint Top 5 HFCs (highest five absolute SCE means) were assayed. It could be demonstrated that both the total mean SCE frequency and the mean Top 5 HFC frequency (n=9) 24 h postrace were significantly decreased (*p< 0.05) compared to 48 h prerace values. Considering the training status, a significant negative correlation betw...

Prostate cancer is a leading cause of death in USA. Proper management of disease requires better understanding of mechanisms involved in cancer growth and proliferation. Statins were shown to have beneficial effects in cancers, as proven by the many clinical trials supporting the evidence. Our research studied simvastatin effects and molecular mechanisms affecting prostate cancer in vitro and in vivo. We showed that simvastatin affected proliferation, colony formation and migration, in both androgen-dependent and –independent human prostate cancer. In vivo effects were supportive with a reduction of tumor size in proper experimental models. Mechanisms of effect of simvastatin on cancer cell micrometastasis were also studied using ECIS, gene arrays, adhesion assays immunocytochemistry and western blotting and showed its effects on integrin and endothelial barrier. The effect of combining simvastatin with docetaxel was also studied and showed promising results. In conclusion, our pre-clinical research shows beneficial effect of simvastatin alone or in combination with docetaxel in the management of prostate cancer and prevention of micrometastasis.

Scientific Study from the year 2013 in the subject Biology - Micro- and Molecular Biology, grade: A, Nirma University (Institute of Science), language: English, abstract: Increasing applications of MW radiation has led to concerns globally due to the suspected bio effects associated with its exposure. Effect of MW, thermal and/or athermal, is inconclusive, complex, and controversial in literature. Thermal effect causes thermogenic effect while athermal effects are other than heat and such effects reported as somatic effect and/or genetic effect. This study basically deals with the athermal effects and is aimed at investigating the hypothesis that the exposure of microbial cells to MW (low power) may cause athermal effect, which affect on growth of microbes, enzyme activity, and production of exopolysaccharides. Furthermore, we have also checked the effect of different intracellular enzymes on MW treated bacteria. Our study also gives information that MW athermal effects causes changes at genetic level and can be passed on to next generation. There are numerous and increasing applications of MW energy and technology in the industries, in homes, in medical, research institutions etc., and there is greater awareness and concern of the public over the suspected potential health hazards associated with such exposures [ICNIRP Guidelines, 1998]. There is therefore, a need for deeper understanding of the bio-effects of exposure to this radiation. Due to the ease of handing them in lab...

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major causative agent of chronic hepatitis, and it is estimated that 170-200 million people are infected worldwide. The host immune response probably plays a critical role in the control of both HCV replication and liver injury. HCV infection evokes CD4+ Human leukocyte associated antigen (HLA) class II-restricted and CD8+ (cytotoxic T lymphocytes, CTL) HLA class I-restricted T cell responses. CD4+ T lymphocytes have been shown to be crucial for recovering from acute HCV infection and for maintaining such recovery, since the loss of HCV-specific CD4+ responses correlates with relapsing disease. However, the role of CD4+/CD8+ cells in the natural history of chronic HCV is not yet well established. Differences in the host cellular immune response to HCV may be important in viral clearance and conflicting evidence exists as to whether the specific genotype affects the severity of the disease.

This book presents information on a study conducted to evaluate the effects of the carcinogen: N-Methyl-N-Nitrosourea (MNU) in mouse models using a less commonly used strain: Swiss Albino mice. The book provides information on MNU induction in Swiss albino mice, which is illustrative of the differences in the susceptibility of various strains to the effects of the carcinogen induction. Percentage tumor induction was minimal at the specified dose of 50mg/kg, suggesting some degree of resistance by this mouse strain to the effects of the carcinogen induction. Histological abnormalities are well highlighted. Hence, the book may also prove useful for teachers and students of histology.

Droughts are a major hazard to both natural and human-dominated environments and those, especially of long duration and high intensity, can be highly damaging and leave long-lasting effects. This book describes the climatic conditions that give rise to droughts, and their various forms and chief attributes. Past droughts are described including those that had severe impacts on human societies. As a disturbance, droughts can be thought of as “ramps” in that they usually build slowly and take time to become evident. As precipitation is reduced, flows from catchments into aquatic systems decline. As water declines in water bodies, ecological processes are changed and the biota can be drastically reduced, though species and populations may survive by using refuges. Recovery from drought varies in both rates and in degrees of completeness and may be a function of both refuge availability and connectivity. For the first time, this book reviews the available rather scattered literature on the impacts of drought on the flora, fauna and ecological processes of aquatic ecosystems ranging from small ponds to lakes and from streams to estuaries. The effects of drought on the biota of standing waters and flowing waters and of temporary waters and perennial systems are described and compared. In addition, the ways in which human activity can exacerbate droughts are outlined. In many parts of the world especially in the mid latitudes, global warming may result in increases in the duration and intensity of droughts. Drought and Aquatic Ecosystems is essential reading for freshwater ecologists, water resource managers and advanced students.

In programming practice, side effects are a well-known phenomenon. However, a formal definition of side effects is missing. Intuitively, a side effect of a propositional statement is a change in state of a program or model other than the effect (or change in state) it was initially executed for. In this book, I will check this intuition and I will give a formal definition of side effects. I will do so by modifying a system for modelling program instructions and program states, Quantified Dynamic Logic (QDL), to a system called Dynamic Logic with Assignments as Formulas (DLAf), which in contrast to QDL allows assignments in formulas and makes use of short-circuit evaluation. I will show the underlying logic in those formulas to be a variant of short-circuit logic called repetition-proof short-circuit logic. Using that, I can give the definition and even a classification of side effects. The definition and the classification of side effects outlined in this book not only open doors to further research in this area, but also hold high potential for applications in the programming industry.

It focuses on the approach to deduce legal claims in the form of compensations and concrete measures from international human rights in the course of impairments through climate change. This paper shall give a short overview on the issue climate change in general, including its causes, effects and the current political strategies. It furthermore provides a synopsis on how human rights are impaired by global warming and climate change effects.Unfortunately, this essay will come to the conclusion that the international human rights approach struggles with functioning as a solitary legal basis in that context and with stepping beyond the just moral implication. Human rights' legislative potential rather lies 'in the development of more encompassing and more inclusive legal and political strategies. Human rights may advisably be instrumentalized to strengthen political debates and be used as an incitement to set up enforceable and balanced agreements on reasonable measures of equalization and support.

It traces the effects of refugees in other parts of the world and how governments and international bodies have been responding to it. It is evident that the community living around the Dadaab refugee camp are aware of the dangers posed by human settlement on the environment management. Natural resources around the refugee camp have been declining every year due to influx of the refugees in the area who compete for the meager resources with the locals without replacing them and this spells doom to the community due to depletion of the resources which mainly support their life.

The Meridian is the most important concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine. 5000 years ago, Chinese scientists discovered energy streams in the human body and ever since the phenomenon of the meridian, together with medicinal herbs and acupuncture, has been used to treat illness. As with the anatomical system for Western Medicine, the science of the meridian in the body can be regarded as the basis of Eastern Medicine. In this book, Professor Miao presents his knowledge and the results of more than 20 years of detailed research. Inspired by the Daoist concept of the unity of heaven and humanity, he establishes bio-physical and bio-mathematical models for the meridian. The meridian, the author claims, is the result of an interaction between the geo-physical field and the physiological activity of the human body. This interaction creates subsonic vibration which in turn leads to the formation of so called "bio-wave" streaming through the human body. The author also explores his new definition of "Qi" and "Xue" (blood) and explains the spreading of the bio-wave by means of audio frequencies. In addition, Professor Miao uses bio-wave theory as the context in which to present his results for the effects of Chinese Medicine on the basis of more than 10 selected herbs. The author uses cell and molecular biology to explain the medical effects of Qigong and acupuncture. The author uses the "Standing Wave" theory to explain the theoretical principle of a...

Water and vegetation are vital for sustaining life. However, they are becoming more stressed following population growth and associated water demands. As a result, most continent discharges are classified as "moderate" to "highly threatened" by human activities, partly through water abstraction. Bwathonaro river in Meru, Imenti North District of Eastern Kenya is not exception. The river is experiencing over abstraction driven by a number of forces, including increased irrigation farming. Consequently, downstream flows have now reduced to zero during dry season, thus causing great effects to the riparian vegetation. The severity of the effects has necessitated the adoption of mitigation measures. This book describes measures taken to mitigate the effects of water abstraction on riparian vegetation of Bwathonaro river. With increase in management efforts, the results showed progressive amplification on timing and duration of river flow peaking and retrogressive behavior of riparian vegetation. The results are useful for planning and decision making on viable measures which can reduce the effects of water abstraction on the riparian vegetation of rivers with similar characteristics.

Microbiota-associated pathology can be a direct result of changes in general bacterial composition, such as might be found in periodontitis and bacterial vaginosis, and/or as the result of colonization and/or overgrowth of so called keystone species. The disruption in the composition of the normal human microbiota, or dysbiosis, plays an integral role in human health and human disease. The Human Microbiota and Human Chronic Disease: Dysbioses as a Cause of Human Pathology discusses the role of the microbiota in maintaining human health. The text introduces the reader to the biology of microbial dysbiosis and its potential role in both bacterial disease and in idiopathic chronic disease states. Divided into five sections, the text delineates the concept of the human bacterial microbiota with particular attention being paid to the microbiotae of the gut, oral cavity and skin. A key methodology for exploring the microbiota, metagenomics, is also described. The book then shows the reader the cellular, molecular and genetic complexities of the bacterial microbiota, its myriad connections with the host and how these can maintain tissue homeostasis. Chapters then consider the role of dysbioses in human disease states, dealing with two of the commonest bacterial diseases of humanity – periodontitis and bacterial vaginosis. The composition of some, if not all microbiotas can be controlled by the diet and this is also dealt with in this section. The discussion moves on to the major ‘idiopathic’ diseases afflicting humans, and the potential role that dysbiosis could play in their induction and chronicity. The book then concludes with the therapeutic potential of manipulating the microbiota, introducing the concepts of probiotics, prebiotics and the administration of healthy human faeces (faecal microbiota transplantation), and then hypothesizes as to the future of medical treatment viewed from a microbiota-centric position. Provides an introduction to dysbiosis, or a disruption in the composition of the normal human microbiota Explains how microbiota-associated pathology and other chronic diseases can result from changes in general bacterial composition Explores the relationship humans have with their microbiota, and its significance in human health and disease Covers host genetic variants and their role in the composition of human microbial biofilms, integral to the relationship between human health and human disease Authored and edited by leaders in the field, The Human Microbiota and Human Chronic Disease will be an invaluable resource for clinicians, pathologists, immunologists, cell and molecular biologists, biochemists, and system biologists studying cellular and molecular bases of human diseases.

Findings include whether copper sulphate has beneficial or lethal effects on these organs, and to study the effects of copper sulphate on broilers to check the environmental pollution level. In practice vinegerized copper sulphate is added in the food of broilers which is used as a fungicide, algicide, as dietary supplement for poultry and a source of nutrition in animals and as a source of growth promotant. Copper effect all the body organs of the broiler chickens and also effect the growth. Copper is the most likely to become toxic when over supplemented. Copper toxicities can occur in cattle that consume excessive amounts of supplemented copper or feeds that have been contaminated with copper compounds used for other agricultural or industrial purposes. These heavy metal contents move into the human body when they eat the meat of the broilers and cause many hazardous effects. The waste of the broilers which is used in fertilizers is also the major cause of creating diseases in humans.

During the nineteenth century, ivory hunting caused a substantial decrease of elephant numbers in southern Africa. Soon after that, populations of many other large and medium-sized herbivores went into steep decline due to the rinderpest pandemic in the 1890s. These two events provided an opportunity for woodland establishment in areas previously intensively utilized by elephants and other herbivores. The return of elephants to currently protected areas of their former range has greatly influenced vegetation locally and the resulting potential negative effects on biodiversity are causing concern among stakeholders, managers, and scientists. This book focuses on the ecological effects of the increasing elephant population in northern Botswana, presenting the importance of the elephants for the heterogeneity of the system, and showing that elephant ecology involves much wider spatiotemporal scales than was previously thought. Drawing on the results of their research, the authors discuss elephant-caused effects on vegetation in nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor savannas, and the potential competition between elephants on the one hand and browsers and mixed feeders on the other. Ultimately this text provides a comprehensive review of ecological processes in African savannas, covering long-term ecosystem changes and human-wildlife conflicts. It summarises new knowledge on the ecology of the sub-humid African savanna ecosystems to advance the general functional understanding of savanna ecosystems across moisture and nutrient gradients.

This research contributes to the current body of knowledge by examining the unintended effects of ethnically targeted advertising on ethnic groups that are not targeted, but who are still likely to see the advertising. The research also develops a holistic model for measuring the effects of targeted advertising using four variables; emotions, attitude to the advertisement, attitude to the company and behavioral intentions. The conceptual basis of the model is accommodation theory, which allows for different levels of targeting based on the language mix used in advertisements. The model was tested on three different ethnic groups in Malaysia, namely the Malays, Chinese, and Iban.
